Advanced question for running DOS programs on a Mac.
So what is a simple process on a Windows machine seems to be a challege on my new Mac.
In summary I have several hard drives laying around that need to be checked for problems before they are used. There are lots of free DOS programs available for PCs that do just that. Many are provided directly by the hard drive manufacturers themselves (ie Segate SeaTools) and they are fantastic. Macs unfortunately can't run DOS programs (without hacks like rEFInd) and none of the manufacturers provide Mac compatible software. Looking on the internet everyone points me to Disk Utility to check drives, but compaired to something like SeaTools, Disk Utility is useless. I found Micromats TechTool Pro 6 which comes close to what I need except its expensive and has lots of features I don't need.
I want to avoid installing windows in bootcamp or a VM just to do this one simple task. Very frustrating that it seems like im the only one wanting to do this with a Mac.
Did some more research and figured out these are my options:
-Find a mac alternative (few out there, most very bacic, or very expensive)
-use rEFInd (which is in beta, and modifies OSX)
-bootcamp (which doesnt allow BIOS access to select a dvd DOS program, so doesnt help. Also, mac doesnt use legacy usb and keyboard drivers so you cant use keyboard/mouse in most DOS programs)
-Vmware
So to me my best option was to use Vmware. Installed on a USB hard drive to save space and configured VMware bios to boot from selected .iso of a disk and it worked. Successfully ran SeaTools and because VMware emulates legacy mouse/keyboard it worked.
One problem though. SeaTools for DOS doesnt work from USB sata adapter, and considering its a macbook air im out of luck.

Another question about running old programs on new macs
I'm a little confused and was wondering if someone can help me out.
From what I've read I cannot find any options for me to run an old programs for OS with my intel-based MacBook. Just in case I've tried downloading a bunch of different things (OS 9.2.2 which won't run, sheepshaver which I can't figure out how to use even it it might work). IS there anything that I can do?Welcome to Apple Discussions!
1. Buy an older PowerPC Mac used or refurbished as my FAQ* explains how to do:
http://www.macmaps.com/usedrefurbished.html
2. Contact the developer of the said software and ask a Mac OS X version be published of their software.
3. Politely ask Apple develop a virtualization program through AppleCare's Customer Relations department, http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/ and if you want a free developer account go to http://bugreporter.apple.com/ and submit it as an enhancement request.
4. Tell us what software you want to run that you found is 9 only, and maybe we can tell you an alternative that can open the same documents, play the same style game that is Mac OS X native, or will run under Windows or Linux on your Mac?

Running oracle programs on a Mac Pro??
Hello I currently use a HP laptop for work (provided by my employer. Most of the programs on my computer run on the windows platform. For example, I currently use LIMs (laboratory information management systems), JDE, Lotus Notes (webmail) and Kronos (time entry management for direct reports). Some of the software, such as the ones I listed, were developed by oracle. My question is " Has anyone used programs such as LIMs, Kronos or JDE on a Mac. I am very interested in purchasing a Mac pro but have yet to know if anyone has used such programs on a Mac. If anyone has, I would greatly appreciate any input.

How to run older program on newer Mac?
I recently made the switch from Windows to Mac with a brand new Macbook Air. It's running OS X Yosemite 10.10. I'm a screenwriter and so a friend of mine gave me an older copy of Final Draft that was torrented and said it could be used on Lion and Mountain Lion. Every time I go to install it on my Air the Installer says it has to close and then re open then says its going to run a package to see if it can be installed on my computer then spits out an error saying I need to have a newer version of OS X but as far as I can tell I have the newest version. Anybody know a way around this or why it's doing this?
Sorry. You're not going to get help here. You're also not going to get any sympathy for the fact that you're having problems running stolen software on your Mac.

Running Dos program in VMWare/Windows XP environment
My wife's PC bit the dust, and we're trying to determine if Mac could be a solution. The thought is to load VMware Fusion on a new Mac (and load XP). The dos application needs to be able to connect to handheld barcode scanner device (on Com 1 or Com 2), and be able to print to a printer on LPT!. I know we can buy RS232 serial PCIe cards, and would imagine could find a parallel port (LPT1), but haven't checked. My concern is the mapping of the I/O running under VMWare would not allow the ports to look like Com 1 and LPT1 to the Dos Application.
Anyone have any thoughts whether this could be a solution, or are we better off looking for a Non Mac solutions.benc1 wrote:
Are you sure it only supports 1+2? Reason I ask is I thought the windows app I used had that limitation but in reality it only showed 1+2 as on my old pc those were the only com ports available. When I installed it under vmware with the adaptor connected it only showed 3+4.
To answer the question though - Windows device manager, ports, select prolific usb, properties, advanced, then you can specify com port. (I think that's right - doing this from memory as not near the mac atm!). I'm the other side of the pond so alas I can't recommend a supplier. When I researched this the advice I got was just get one with a prolific chipset. It just worked. Hopefully if you go this route you will find the same.
Thanks for the tip. This particular Dos software only knows how to be configured to Com 1 (address 0x3F8) or Com 2 (0x2F8), but if between VMware and Windows they get remapped there may be a chance. I saw in the FAQs (below) you can assign it to Com 1 or 2. The cost of the adapter you talked about is relatively cheap, so worth trying.

Thanks again. -
Occurs when running Edit.com for example. Error has choice to Close application or Ignore. If Ignore is chosen, application appears to run normally. Running repair of Windows 2000 does not correct the problem.
I'm glad you found it. Don't worry about the post. It's always good to check the KBs first, but we can't help it if we miss one sometime! The forum is definitely helpful though so don't feel hesitant to use it in the future. Good luck with the programming!

Just to add, I am using the same procedure while deploying software in MDT 2013 and works fine. any suggestions?

Doesn't it get very old, same question about running dos command?
To everyone who is tooo lazy to search.
Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("progname arg1 arg2");
What a wast of everyone's time responding to the same question on how to run a dos command.I think you'll find it's
Runtime.getRuntime().exec(new String[]{"progname", "arg1", "arg2"}); -
What is the best touch scree laptop for running adobe programs?
For those of you that are very pleases with the performance? what model and specs do you have.
I use photoshop and illustrator and want a two in one so I can do line art too. But for me it is not worth it if performance does not keep up.
ThanksMake sure the seller that sells older versions of the Adobe CS suites, if this was the sellers own software, has de authorized or unregistered the software they are selling. Also, make sure the seller gives you all of the registration info needed for you to register and authorize this software in your own Adobe account.
Male sure you get the sellers contact info in case something doesn't go right with the registration process.
The seller may need to provide you with info they forgot to five to you or you may need.
If, you have any issues with registering the software, Adobe has a 24 hour live tech support online messaging support system that you can access on the Adobe website.

How do I compile and run Java programs on a Mac?
To clarify my earlier post, I know that you can write java in any text editor but with the PC you compile and run everything through the MS DOS prompt, what is the Mac equivalent?

How can i run windows programs on my mac?
i have a version of photoshop for windows, and i was wondering if it is possible to run that on my iMac. is there something i need to download?
You have several options:
1. Download and install Apple's Boot Camp which enables you to boot the computer either into Windows XP w/Service Pak 2 or OS X. This is a dual-boot solution.
2. Purchase Parallels Desktop for Mac (www.parallels.com) which is virtualization software and enables you to run Windows (any version) simultaneously with OS X in a separate window.
3. Purchase CodeWeavers' CrossOver (www.codeweavers.com) which enables you to run many Windows' applications without having to install Windows.
All the above require you have an Intel Mac with at least 1 GB of installed RAM.

Stupid question: how do uninstall programs on a mac?
just bought a macbook, never really used a mac before but need it for editing w/final cut. if i wanted to uninstall a program, is there a place to uninstall programs like in windows? thanks a lot.
To be clear:
It is generally safe to simply find the application and drag it to the trash. By far and away the majority of applications are self contained and trashing them is all you have to do to uninstall.
Now, there are some applications that install additional files. Most of these will place files either in /library/application support/ or /username/library/application support/. They're easy to find with Spotlight because the folders they reside in will usually have the name of the application or the manufacturer in them. For example, Adobe uses the Application Support folder. The Adobe files are in a folder called... you guessed it: Adobe.
The long and the short of it is that uninstalling applications on a Mac is nothing like uninstalling applications on a PC. There is no registry to mess with and most applications are very kind to the system and leave no weird additional files lying around that you have to hunt down and clean up. -
Question for ALL Bootcamp Pros....
Ok so i am currently on a PC (and have officially decided that I hate PCs) and I want to switch over to the New Macbook Pro-15". See I have a rather advanced question about the Bootcamp program (cause i understand it's basic premiss). I was wondering, is it possible to use a Thumb Drive (like a 60GB USB Drive... and yes I do have one) as my hard drive partition instead of actually partitioning my hard drive on my new Mac. The reason why I am asking this is because I use up a lot of hard drive space (quickly) and I don't want to have to worry about using up my New Mac's hard drive.
So yes, my question is: Can I set up Bootcamp to use a 60GB USB Drive as my hard drive partition for Windows XP on my Mac? In addition, if I were to do this would anyone know how I would go about doing it?
Thanks for the help! Why do you need Bootcamp at all. I'm not a gamer, and if I were, I'd find Mac versions, or a new game
Parallels 4 will let you boot XP from any drive you choose to move the Virtual Drive folder to. You can even store multiple copies of XP or run XP and Vista at the same time, with MacOS. Get plenty of ram for this...
Backing up Windows becomes so simple. Zip the folder and copy the file to a backup drive. Hose up your XP? Just delete the folder and move an uncompressed copy back to the right location. XP just runs again. No mixed partition drive, and the problems people have when they screw up removing the Windows partition.
Exclude the XP folder from Time Machine, and when working with XP save documents to the 'Shared' folder that Parallels creates (that isn't excluded from Time Machine) for hourly backups of your files.
If you trash XP on a Bootcamp partition, you are stuck with the same format and reinstallation of everything that you are trying to leave.
