Advice for going to MBP in PC-exclusive office

On 5/9 I plan to trade in my Lenovo X41 Convertible Tablet for a MBP at work - an office with just one other Mac on the mid-size network. What will be my biggest challenges? I'm thinking it will be collaborative Outlook calendaring mostly, which I can deal with. Am I not thinking of something?
Should I plan on trying/using Boot Camp?
This won't be my first Mac - I use one at home - but I've never broken out of the PC norm at work before!
iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.6)

A couple of things, based on my experience and my current plan:
First, I would get a copy of XP Pro, and download Parallels AND BootCamp. Install XP Pro on an instance of Parallels, and ALSO on the MBP's Boot Camp. You should be able to install it 2x without activation (I hope this is the case). My goal is to install it first on Parallels.
If you don't like MS Office, you should try it on a mac. It is much nicer and easier to use (and stable too). I was using Entourage (like Outlook) for a while, but since it didn't at that time hook to Spotlight searching, I switched to the Apple Mail program. I'm pretty happy, although I hate the lack of html format in my emails (bullets, etc).
Then, for networking using your mac, the current software has troubles with Windows 2003 Server. So... You can get a copy of 'DAVE' --it's a networking program that does a better job at sharing/using/logging into Windows 2003 servers.
Once you find whether you can run your main business apps on Parallels, you can figure out which instance you want to activate the OS on.
You could have a couple of glitches. One of them for me was about some of the Windows 2003 network share names--they have to be less than 30 characters or so or the networking client (either Dave or Apple) won't see them. I have a printer at work I can't print to because the name is somehting like \\server1\hp laserjet over near the conferenc e room
I'm hoping this is how I will proceed. I have used two laptops lately to shuffle between a .NET and a J2EE development environment, and can't wait to simplify my life a bit. I really would like to have the option of dual boot for some things and Parallels for others, but I will probably be cash constrained for a while so probably will only use Parallels.

  • Advice for switching to MBP

    Hi there,
I know tons of questions have been asked about this, but to save me filtering through hundreds of threads i'd appreciate if people could fill me in here
I have been wanting to get a MBP for sometime now (in the UK), and well, because of uni exams, and because i kept on hearing problems with the MBP i have put it off until now.
What I wanted to know is.. have Apple done anything to resolve the issues, is the heat thing really an issue or should i be more worried with this 'whinning' thing (and what exactly is this problem?).
I am not planning on switching completely to macs (yet), so i doubt i will be running intensive apps on it etc as i am still comfortable using my PC, but i do plan on using bootcamp to put XP on the MBP (or maybe use parallels.. dunno yet). Are macs easy to get used to, and how hard will it be to get my head around the new operating system, and using new programs that i have never heard of to replace pc apps?
Oh, and one final question.. if I get a MBP and have problems, is Apple Care good, and are they quite good to exchange the computer, considering the amount of problems they seem to be having?
A few questions i know :0) but i just wanna make sure I know what i am getting myself into for the money that will be spent on this.
    Thanks in advance

I very highly recommend getting one of these laptops. There are some complaints about the machine that you will read on these boards and in other sites, to be sure, and many of these comments ARE warranted, but a bit of perspective must be taken, in my opinion.
Let's look at the most common ones.
THE HEAT ISSUE. This IS an issue, but a tolerable one. I think much of your experience with this will be determined by HOW you use your laptop. When placed on a desk or table, where the bottom of the machine is very slightly elevated from the surface by the little rubber feet, the machine remains a bearable temperature, as the bottom of the unit radiates much of the heat away from the device. The top of the machine does not get unbearably hot if care is taken to allow for airflow under the machine. I am what could be termed a "bed user". I like to lounge out on my bed with the laptop in front of me while I watch television. If I let the unit sit directly on the top of the bed or the couch, for that matter, the entire unit WILL get very warm. I usually grab a large thick magazine, or even a plastic tray, and set the MacBook on top of that, thus allowing for the airflow under the unit. It remains a nice working temperature. I don't use the machine IN my lap for long periods of time. Indeed, with that 15" display, calling this machine a "laptop" is a bit of a misnomer, anyway.
THE WHINE ISSUE. Well, there IS a whine when the machine is unplugged from AC and running on battery power. Your tolerance of this will depend upon the sensitivity of your hearing, but also in your position relative to the machine. If I am lounging out in a quiet environment, with my face a foot or so from the screen, yes, there is a high-pitched whine, and it can be grating. I generally just put something on iTunes, and it effectively masks the sound. BUT that being said, if you again use the machine on a desktop or tabletop surface, and are sitting at a "normal" viewing distance, while audible, the whine is not intolerable. IF I lean into the machine, I will hear it, and it can get a bit annoying. Again, this is only if I am in a quiet environment with little ambient noise. This problem will probably be addressed in the future with an update, as it is affected by processor load.
That being said, the positives of this stunning little machine are staggering. It is blisteringly fast. The dual processor cores just make this thing tear through processor-intensive tasks, while still providing for a very responsive user experience. The screen is gorgeous. The graphics are fast. The ability to run Windows on the thing is such an amazing plus to the whole experience as well. I haven't any experience with Boot Camp, but I have been using Parallels (which is at Release Candidate 2 now, btw) and this thing is wonderful. It takes less than 10 seconds to boot into Windows XP, and it runs at near-native speeds. Using Virtual PC on PPC Macs was grueling. I don't often have to use Windows, but when I do need to test something, or run some strange application that has no Mac counterpart, or need to test a website, being able to boot into this virtual machine is great. Blow the virtual machine up to full screen and it is like I am using a well-designed wintel laptop.
The large trackpad is wonderful, two fingered scrolling is such an obvious and wonderful interface addition, and the minimal design is great. I cringe when I see Windows laptops with about two dozen extra little buttons and lights on them - convenience features, supposedly. The MacBook Pro design follows the design philosophy of its predecessors... pare down the spare junk on the machine, until you have the bare minimum needed to do the most work.
Airport reception is fast, the hard drive is fast (I got the 7200 RPM update) and such things as driving external monitors, or using it in lid-closed mode are sweet as well. This is a wonderful product.

  • A1281 is the battery i got for my 15inch MBP. Is the battery life only 2 - 3 hours for a new battery on this device.

A1281 is the battery i got for my 15inch MBP. Is the battery life only 2 - 3 hours for a new battery on this device.
    This is from Apple.
2 to 3 hours seems very low.
what is teh standard or advertised spec for a 15 inch Macbook Pro with this battery.
I would like to know so that i can return it if this is not normal.
Its expensive so comments would be appreciated.

I say it depends on your model? average usage is about 3-4 hours depending on what you use and how you use it. Adobe Flash player eats a lot of battery power so if you are on a web page and has flash player, likely that it's eating up battery because of it's power thirsty.
Also check your systems activity monitor. It could be possible that one of your program/apps did not close right and may be still running. So check for that and end the process if necessary.
If you have a backlight keyboard, in a broad daylight, it's not necessary to have it on.
I also suggest that you use it plugged in most of the time, and it's not going to hurt or damage the battery if you have it plugged in all the time. Only use on battery if you are going to places that has no access to the outlet. If you are at home, then keep it plugged in. Just keep in mind to fully drain the battery until it your MBP turns off on it's own. This is the calibration process so that you have the most accurate battery readings.
The standard for 2011 MBP is 7 hours on battery. Before that model is 10 hours, but i don't believe that previous models will last 10 hours. Last week I calibrated my battery readings from fully charged and it took 9 hours to completely drain out the battery (I have a 2011 model),
If you think it's not normal and that your battery doesn't meet your expectation then set up an appointment with the genius bar and have them test the battery. They will determine whether it is faulty or not.

  • Advice for real performance of LV8.5 operate in the XP and Vista

    Hi all
My company had purchased new computers for LabVIEW programming purpose.
We may install the LV8.5 in these computers but OS are not decided yet. Also, we have the current PC is only XP licensed
Therefore, can anyone give the advice for the real performance advantage of using :
LV8.5 with Vista over LV8.5 with XP
LV8.5 with Vista over LV7.1 with XP
LV7.1 with Vista over LV7.1 with XP
    New computers detail:
    Intel(R) Pentium(R)Dual-Core processor E2160
    BCH-P111 -1.80GHz, 1MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB
    2GB RAM
    Thanks
    Best Regards
    Steve So

The biggest issue I have seen with 8.5 Vista vs. XP is that if you leave Vista in the standard theme, the fonts have changed.  I designed several front panels to have them be out of whack with XP.  So if you are going to be using code across platforms, you need to keep in mind they will look different unless you use the XP theme in Vista, or customize your fonts to make sure they remain the same between the systems.  The dialog font is a different size (13 on Vista vs. 11 on XP), and a different font (can't remember the difference).  That was the big one I noticed.
8.5 over 7.1 is mostly going to be the learning curve to learn the new features.  Overall, I have appreciated the changes, but there are some things (mostly development related) that I have seen run a little slower in 8.5 than in 7.1, but have not noticed any runtime issues as of yet.  One big change between the versions is application building, which is more complex in 8+.  I do appreciate the new features, though, but NIs project still hasn't rubbed me the right way yet.
NI doesn't support LV 7.1 with Vista.  I have used it and haven't seen any problems, but that doesn't mean one won't pop up.  If you're going to stay with 7.1, you better stay with XP.  8.5 is the first version NIs supports as Vista compatible.  You will also have to use a relatively new set of device drivers, so if you have old hardware you are trying to use in your new system, make sure it is cimpatible with the latest drivers.
I have actually had more issues with other hardware drivers and software packages than I have with LabVIEW.  TestStand is not yet supported in Vista, and i found out the hard way, one of the ways it is incompatible and had to move back to XP for devlopment.

  • How long does it take for a custom MBP to be shipped to an Apple Store?

Being OCD, I am going crazy waiting for my new MBP to arrive at my local store. I ordered a customized model and the email sent by Apple sais it would arrive on the 24th. Does anypne have experience with shipping to store and early arrivals? I ordered it on the 13th.
    Thanks.

Ship to store ship times are usually correct maybe a day earlier but not much more

  • Request Advice for creating DVDs from 7.5 gig file sizes

    Hi,
    [using dvdstudio 3]
I’m looking for advice for home DVD project i'm working on. I want to create a DVD from video that has been captured to my computer using iMovieHD, and have completed my wanted edits for two clips. They are about an hour-plus each. When exporting the two clips separately (Sharing, in iMovie terms), the file sizes are about 7.5 Gig each at full quality, and I understand I’m going to have to cut some corners in the process to get both on one DVD and I’m even willing to have two DVDs, but still need to know the best way to decrease the file size for each one. The audio should remain as 16 bit 44.1 Khz, Stereo.
I’m wondering what the best method to achieve an optimum quality DVD is. Again, I realize I’ll have to compress the video at the loss of quality (i.e., “cut corners”) to make the DVDs.
In my previous experiences, I’ve retained the larger file size all the way up through the authoring process in DVD Studio letting it build a 7.5 gig dvd format (VIDEO_TS). Then, I used DVDx2One to compress it down to 4.5. The end result was pretty good and I never had any troubles per say. However, this project is important to me and I want to make the best quality I can. What would you do differently?
Here are my software tools that I use interchangeably for previous projects; copying, authoring, editing, etc:
-> iMovieHD 4x – used to capture the video.
-> DVD Studio 3 - to author and build my dvd session
-> ffmpegx - as a video conversion and compression tool
    -> DVDX2one to recompress DVD formatted (VIDEO_TS).
Thanks very much for your tips!
    JeffTronics

Hi Jeff - is the iMovie file in QT format?
If so, you need to compress it to MPEG2 - you don't need to suffer too much of a quality loss by doing so - how long (in minutes) is the video?
You should also encode the audio to AC3 - this will save loads of space as AC3 is about a tenth the size of a .aiff.
ffmpeg will create the MPEG for you, but so will DVDSP (as indeed will Quicktime). In your applications folder you should find 'A.Pack' which will handle the audio conversion as well.
The exact encoding parameters you use will depend on the nature of the footage that you have got - it's more than just squeezing it to fit - you need to account for fades, pans, zooms and fast action as well. Some parts can have a lower bitrate applied than others, and this is where a tool such as Compressor comes in handy. DVDSP will encode the footage as you work, or when you build if you want it to - this is also a reasonable option if you have nothing else available, or if you are new to the whole thing.
The best workflow is to go from iMovie to a compression tool to create your MPEG2 file. Take the associated .aiff file and encode to to Dolby Digital (AC3). Import both the MPEG2 and the AC3 file into DVDSP and you should be able to get the entire project to less than 4.37GB (the maximum capacity of a DVD-R).

  • Advice transferring data from MBP to MBP via Thunderbolt

does anyone have advice for the best way to transfer "specific" user data from one Mac to another?  i just want to copy all the stuff needed to sync my iPhone (i.e. iTunes library & iPhoto library), without bringing the old Account over to the destination machine.
i'm sure i'm making it more difficult that it needs to be, but i've been browsing the web for a solution and all the advice seems to be for people setting up a brand new machine, out of the box, BEFORE establishing a new account (and all the system data that comes with it).  i've already set up an account & i only want the mission critical data.
for example, have you ever used Apple's Migration Assistant to transfer data from one Mac to another, AFTER establishing a new account on the destination machine?  if my memory serves, the last time i did it, i ended up with two different Login Accounts. one of which i never used again (i know i can delete it afterwards, but that approach feels inelegant).
i know i can use Target Disk Mode to "drag & drop" the files needed, but that makes me worry that i'll run in to problems (possibly with user permissions, or even apps that i've already installed outside of the realm of iOS syncing).  for example i put 1Password & Dropbox on the destination machine, so if i use Migration Assistant to copy the entire Applications folder, am I going to have 1Password & Dropbox data stored in 2 locations?).  i imagine dropbox is "system wide" whereas 1Password is an account-specific app.
thanks in advance if you offer feedback

For iTunes, your best bet may be Home Sharing, per  iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer.
For iPhoto, you should be able to use Target Disk mode and just copy the iPhoto library.  The user account on the new Mac may have read rights to the iPhoto library on the old Mac, allowing you to copy it directly.
If it doesn't, you should be able to log on to the old Mac and copy the iPhoto library to the special Shared user account in the Users folder at the top level of the drive.  Then start the old Mac in Target Disk mode, log on to the new one, and copy from the Users/Shared folder.
all the advice seems to be for people setting up a brand new machine, out of the box, BEFORE establishing a new account (and all the system data that comes with it).
Yes, it's by far the best, easiest, fastest, and most reliable way to set up a new Mac just like the old one, with all the same user accounts, data, settings and preferences.  It's called Setup Assistant (see Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion for the gory details).
have you ever used Apple's Migration Assistant to transfer data from one Mac to another, AFTER establishing a new account on the destination machine?  if my memory serves, the last time i did it, i ended up with two different Login Accounts. one of which i never used again (i know i can delete it afterwards, but that approach feels inelegant).
Yes, exactly.  Migration Assistant is very similar to Setup Assistant, but must be run from an Admin user account, and can't add to an existing account.  If you want to transfer an entire account, you can still do so, and if you need more than your iTunes and iPhoto data, that's probably your best bet.
If you don't already have things like Mail, Contacts, and Calendar set up, you'll find it rather tedious to set them up again manually, or to copy the data.
if i use Migration Assistant to copy the entire Applications folder, am I going to have 1Password & Dropbox data stored in 2 locations?).
Probably not;  it depends on where you installed those apps.  Both Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant copy apps from the top-level Applications folder from the old Mac to the top-level Applications folder on the new Mac, plus some supporting files.  It only transfers apps that don't already exist, so it doesn't replace newer versions with older ones.
If you don't use one of those to transfer your Applications, and just drag and drop them, some won't work properly.  That's because "complex" apps (typically, the ones that come with their own installers) also install additional "helper" apps and/or various support files in other locations, usually inside the top-level Library folder.  If you don't know find and copy those, too, the apps may not work properly or at all.  The Assistants do copy those apps and files nearly all the time (there are a few apps that place things in places they shouldn't).
Bottom line:   Migration Assistant is probably your best, easiest, most reliable option.

  • Does Mac OS make PDFs suitable for going to Press?

For some years I've been producing a series of small, relatively simple booklets (4x5", 44pp, text & scanned line-art graphics). I've been putting them together in PageMaker (v.5—yes, in OS 9), and making PDFs to go to press with Acrobat (v.5). Now I can't use PageMaker for the latest one, because it's in Japanese, which PM can't handle; so I'm trying Pages. Seems to work okay, but I'm wondering about the PDF part: Does Mac OS X's "Print to PDF" function make a PDF suitable for going to press, like the "Press" setting in Acrobat—i.e. with full-resolution graphics, etc.? (I know Mac OS's PDFs embed the fonts in the document, so that part would seem to be covered.) Anyone know if there's anything to worry about there? Anything special I need to do?
    TIA,
    Andrew Main

What I'm working on is a reprint of the Japanese version of the Thanksgiving Address for The Tracking Project, a fine organization run by a friend of mine. The Thanksgiving Address is an ancient Mohawk prayer/invocation, thanking all the elements of the world around us for their contributions to our lives. The original version takes a week to recite (and an elder who died a decade ago may have been the last man who remembered the whole thing); this is a much abbreviated version for international distribution. We produced the first edition, in the original Mohawk and English, in 1993. A year or two later, one of John's associates in Germany said he'd like to do a German version, so we did that. And so on. We just put out an Italian version, making ten different languages, each with the original Mohawk. See below the cover and one spread from the original English version, and samples from the Hawaiian and the Japanese version, which I'm working on now.
I did the original English/Mohawk version in PageMaker in 1993, and every version since except the Japanese, as PageMaker doesn't handle Japanese. All the others are in the Latin alphabet, though the Hawaiian required a specially modified Palatino font (with accented letters in ASCII slots) which luckily someone at the University of Hawaii had made up in the pre-Unicode days. In the 90s I was sending PageMaker 5 files to the printer, which fortunately they could open and work onto the press; only in recent years have I come across an old copy of Acrobat and learned how to distill the PageMaker files into press-ready PDFs.
For the original Japanese version in 1999, I took the usual layout in PageMaker, with the Mohawk text but the space for the other text blank, had it printed out at a service bureau on fine paper, then made up the Japanese text in AppleWorks, had it printed, then pasted the Japanese text blocks onto the PageMaker printout, and took it to the printer, who fortunately still had a camera to photograph it. I've been in graphic arts since the 60s, and was an expert paste-up man (pretty good on the corner print shop black-and-white camera too, as well as the IBM Selectric Composer), worked on (among others) the Whole Earth Catalog in the 70s and Stereophile magazine in the 80s.
But now it's time to reprint the Japanese version, and the translator wants to make changes, so I figured it was finally time to try updating my work into the current computer world. I have no need of InDesign (nor money to buy it—or do you have to rent it now?). I first thought of using Libre/OpenOffice (wish they'd get that straightened out) for future file compatibility, and from what I knew it seemed to have all the details I needed for this simple job. But, as a Mac user exclusively since I got my first computer in 1988, I found the program opaque, and when I early ran into a situation where a command I needed wasn't on the menu the manual said it was on, I gave up and went to Pages, which I have used a little, though there's a lot about it I don't care for. It seems like a lot of effort has been put into the façade, but some pretty shoddy work behind it.
But I've found it not very difficult to set up the Japanese Thanksgiving Address job in Pages, only I'm concerned if the printer can use it. Thus my query here. I'll be contacting the printer, and send them a sample PDF to see if it works for them. I hope I won't have to add crop marks, as from my initial look at the Manual, it seems Master Objects are only available on WP documents (which seems dumb)—which means I would have to manually add them on all 44 pages. Anyway it's a simple job, black only, so it should be workable.
Apple has moved so far from their old base of professional print designers it would be safe to say it isn't going to do anything to fix the issues.
Yes, 'tis a pity indeed. Now if you could do professional graphics on an iPad, there'd probably be a lot of time put into perfecting it. The Mac, though, and what it used to do, is old hat.
Have you thought about running a 32 bit version of OSX that supports Pagemaker in emulation?
I tried that once, back in the OS X 10.4 days, and it made my fans go wild. Anyway, the problem is that PageMaker can't work with Japanese—or I could just run it on my G3 PowerBook as I do for the other jobs.

  • Any advice for teacher struggling with scratch disk problems?

    Hi,
Just wondering if anyone out there has advice for me. I am a Media Teacher with very little technical expertise. We use Premiere Elements 4.0 in my school. This is accessible to students on the school network but is located on a separate drive. I am experienceing a lot of problems at the moment which I suspect may be to do with having multiple users. The students work in groups. Some of them do not seem to be able to access their current coursework - a scratch disk error message comes up and they are asked if they want to locate the scratch disks into their own area of the school network. As personal space is very limited, they always say no, and then cannot access the projects. Other students do not have this problem. The scratch disks are located by default to the same drive as the main work.
A further problem is that in one project, the clips in the second half of the project seem to be 'offline'. I have seen this before and have been able to fix it by locating the clip in the project menu and using 'locate media' to reconnect it. However, this time round, the clip can be seen and runs perfectly in the project menu. It also looks as normal on the timeline. It is only in the viewing window that it comes up as offline. The locate media option isn't available. If I save as an avi, the offline message appears, so the project burns as it appears in the viewing window. If I drag the clips down from the project area and reconstruct, everything plays normally until I close the project down and open it again, when the clips are back offline. I can tell something strange is going on because the project is loading very quickly - it was taking a couple of minutes previously.
Any advice at all would be welcome, as we are near the end of the coursework and the projects we can't access represent a term's work for the students!

You may need to contact Adobe Tech Support for your specific needs.
Is Premiere Elements installed on your network or on the C drives of each computer? The program must be installed on the C drive in order to work properly. You can't run the program from a network installation, and that could explain why you're having the problems you're having.
If you've got Premiere Elements installed on your C drive, you should be able to access your video files if they're stored on the network. But this depends on how your network is set up. It may not be possible for all of your students to access material out on your network drive and remain connected to it the same way every time you open your project.
In other words, you're using the program in ways it's not designed to be used. This is why you may need to contact Tech Suport and see if they can recommend a solution, short of each student having their own complete installation on each computer.

There should be no issues. Its designed to work like that.  You don't change Apple IDs just because you get a new device.

Unlikely. But nothing is impossible.   Though I don;t see how that would happen. As long as both are signed into the Same Apple ID / iCloud Account they will be N'Sync. (Bad Joke)

If I get a message or buy an app or take a photo on the iPhone 5, how do I get those things onto the iPhone 6?
If you buy an App, you have 2 ways to get it to the iPhone6: If Automatic Downloads is enabled in Settings->iTunes & App Store, it will automatically download to the iPhone 6 when you buy it on the 5 and vice versa if you buy it on the 6, it will download to the 5.
Alternatively, you can simply go to the App Store App->Updates->Purchased and look for the App there and download it. Purchased Apps will not require payment again. i.e They'll be free to download to the iPhone 6 once purchased.
SMS Messages will sync over using Continuity as long as they are on the same Wifi network. Otherwise, restoring the iPhone 5 backup to the iPhone 6 will transfer all messages received up until the backup was made onto the iPhone 6.
Images, can be transferred either through Photo Stream
My Photo Stream FAQ - Apple Support
Or any Cloud service you want such as Dropbox, or One Drive.

Also, something i forgot to ask initially: Should I update the iPhone 5 to iOS 8 first or does that not matter?
If you want the Continuity features as explained above you need to update the iPhone 5 to iOS 8. Otherwise its not all that important.

  • Multiple libraries, Pbook/Pmac, advice for management & updating please.

    Hi Everyone,
I travel frequently, and am looking for suggestions to keep all my iPhoto libraries up to date. I currently have a g5, Powerbook, and Mini.
I just upgraded to iPhoto 6 and I have several thousand photos on my Dual g5. I just came back with 1000 more from my diving trip. The problem is, they are on my Powerbook, and taking up alot of space on the relatively small hard drive. I managed to work through the rough upgrade from 5 to 6, and now I need some more help...
    1) What is your advice for managing multiple libraries of photos.
    2) What is the best way to transfer the iphoto pics (and movies) to my desktop, which of course has the larger storage capacity, after travelling...
    Thanks,

    Jason:
There are several different approaches to what you want to do. Let me just throw out a couple that I'm familiar with.
To get the new photos from your PB to your G5 and maintain any keywords, and other organization effort you put into them, you'll need the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. It will allow you to merge libraries or copy between libraries and maintain the metadata, etc. That's the only way currently available to move photos from one library to another and keep the roll, keywords, comments, etc. with those photos. You can connect the two Macs with one in the Target Mode, probably your PB, and then run iPLM to move the photos to the G5 library.
Now there is a way to have a library on your PB that reflects the one on your G5 but is only a fraction of the size. That's to have an alias based library on your PB that uses the Originals folder as its source of source files. (My 25,600 files, 27G, are represented by an iPhoto Library folder of only 1.75G). When the PB is not connected with the G5, say with a LAN, it will have limited capabilities which are in part: you'll only be able to view the thumbnail files, be able to add comments, create, delete or move albums around, add keywords (but with some hassle-but it can be done). You can't do anything that requires moving thumbnails around, work with books, slideshows or calendars. Once the two computers are networked together again the library will act as normal.
Now while on the road you can have a "normal" library to import new full sized files, keyword them, add comments, etc. and then transfer to the G5 library. Once in the G5 library they will be represented in a roll(s) and corresponding folder in the Originals folder. You then fire up the "alias" library, and import those new folders in the G5 Originals folder.
It may be a lot of work but it may be one way of doing it.
I've not done any of the "sharing" with iPhoto so don't know if that's another possible candidate for transferring.
P.S. FWIW I've created this workflow for converting from a conventional library to an alias based one.

  • Why can't I use my old Time Machine BU on TC for my new MBP???

This is getting very frustrating as all the literature says I can use a Time Machine Backup on my TC network for my new MBP just purchased.
The "old" TM backup (BU) was working fine with my MBP laptop that I just replaced (BOTH have Lion 10.8.2 updated).
When I turned on my new MPB -
I went through the system setup which took the information from my old one and carried it over - it worked fine
I then went to the TM system preferences and tried to start with the old TM BU which was called MBP13 sparsebundle
I was never given the window "would you like this computer to inherit the backup history from an older Mac".
I did go to the TM system preferences and clicked "select back up disk. But it selected the disk that the sparsebundle was on and then started a brand new backup. Thats not what I wanted to do.
Remember that I use TC with an external Hard Drive to store the TM BU.... I tried both connecting directly to my new MBP as well as through the network.
What I want to do is just inherit that old TM BU and then go forward.
I really could use some specific help here...
    Thanks in advance.

You can migrate from one machine to another provided both machines are able to boot from the same version of OS X. But that is not the case for you because the two computers have different hardware. The new hardware requires a special build of Mountain Lion. Your old machine uses a different build making its version of Mountain Lion incompatible with the new computer.
Once there is a new public release of Mountain Lion compatible with both computers, then you can install on each as well as migrate from one to the other.
This is a special situation that only occurs when there is a change in hardware that occurs before the public release of OS X has been updated for the new hardware.

  • Creation of ACH pmt advice for EU C.Cd (PMW activated)

    Hi experts,
I'm a little at loss with my 1st dealings with the payment medium workbench. I got a requirement to setup payment advice a EU company code that currently sends out ACH payments without advice.
    Currently In FBZP,
1- The EU CCd is a paying company and the form is the same Z_REMITT_S used for the client's US company.
2- The ACH payment method is defined for the country. The medium is the payment medium workbench and the format is Z_SEPA_CT.
The US company uses the classic workbench and program RFFOUS_T for ACH.
3- In Define Payment Method for Company code, I hit a snag because Under Form Data, there is only the "Drawer on the Form" segment; the entire "Forms" segment where you'd select your script is missing.
Bottom line is How do I set up payment advice for ACH for a EU company paying EU vendors? (am I even asking the right question here?)

maybe OP want to extract all numbers from his inbox using regular expressions?
