Advice on SSD migration a 9,2: Crucial BX 100 vs Samsung EVO

Hi, The Samsung EVO 500 GB on paper looks better than the Crucial BX 100 500 GB in terms of SSD drives.  They're at the same price point. I was wondering if anyone could weigh in on which drive would be better for migration on a 9,2 (late model 2012).
I'm on 10.8.5 and my MBP has been running hot lately. I plan on cleaning the fan but ever since I've had it I've had RAM issues in which running multiple apps and/or having more than one external drive attached sucked the life out of the machine I upgraded to 8GB ram when I first go it, but I hear that 16 GB isn't worth the upgrade so I thought I'd move to an SSD. Now I'm using both Memory Cleaner and SMC just to keep the latest version (except for the OS) running smoothly.
This sort of started out of the blue- I noticed that FF was a drawing too much RAM and I switched to Chrome which I know Chrome is a also huge Ram suck but onetab is saviour in keeping a browser open. Along with Chrome, I typically have Excel and TextEdit, and drop down to roughly 1GB of RAM and can't keep an additional program open (Photoshop/Word/VLC) without constantly having to clean the RAM using memory cleaner and turning the fans way up using SMC.
Sorry, I'm not updating to Yosemite. I never upgrade to the 1st of anything. In didn't upgrade to Mavericks because that sounded to buggy to me- and that isn't even available anymore.
Advice and thoughts would be much appreciated.
Also, any advice on the migration when I actually do it? Clone Copy, etc. . .
Thanks in advance. I appreciate all the help I can get. Best. A

I want to join in the converstation here, cause I also have a MacPro [5,1] 3.2 Quad-Core with 12GB ram and was hoping to talk to people with the same system about internal SSD drives.
I have 3 different 1TB SATA drives already installed...
1 Mavericks [boot/system]
1 Snow Leopard [boot/system]
1 [strictly storage]
And I was thinking of intalling a SSD [maybe about 128 or 200GB?] in the 4th bay so I can then get a 3rd [boot/system] that will obviously run a bit faster than the other drives.
I'm just curious to know not only about the drives, but the phsycial installation of the drive. Do the drives that area available for purchase online, do they come with the drive alone? And do they fit in the hard drive carrier that is in the MacPro? Or is there an additional kit that is needed when puttin the drive in?
I'm mostly going to be running pro audio stuff like Logic, Ableton, Reason, Native instruments stuff, etc. as well as Autodesk Maya and other graphics and video stuff., so any suggestions would be nice.

  • Macbook Pro Mid 2012 Crucial m500 960gb or Samsung Evo 840 1tb?

    Hello,
So i've done a lot of research and I can't seem to quite get a definite answer.
I've seen many people say that the Samsung Evo 840 is having issues during bootup in the Mid 2012 one but some are saying it's running perfectly fine.
On the other hand, some are saying Crucial is better and guarantees that it will work.
I saw a link on youtube where the person upgrades his mid 2012 with the samsung evo 1tb.
But he has the top spec one.
    Mine are:
    Model Name:
    MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:
    MacBookPro9,1
      Processor Name:
    Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:
    2.3 GHz
Has anyone tried upgrading this particular model with either the Crucial or the Samsung Evo?
    Any thoughts?
I'm currently using a Kingston ssdnow v300 120GB with a 500GB HD but always seem to be running out of space on the boot drive which is annoying.
I want to get a large SSD and know that it'll run perfectly for the next 5 years.
    Cheers.

I've had the M500 960GB drive for about 4 months now and I love it - it wasn't a major upgrade for me: I had a Crucial m4 series 512GB but, as I have had such good luck with Crucial, decided to go with the M500 960GB.
There was a new firmware upgrade on March 25th, so if you get the M500, be sure and do the (very simple) firmware upgrade!
    Good luck,

Just ordered the Crucial M550 512Gb SSD ($334) to replace my Crucial M4 256Gb SSD.  The drive is still going strong after 21 months of service but wanted a little larger capacity and faster write speeds.  I will be putting the M4 in a 2009 MacBook Pro even though it's only negotiated link speed will be 3 Gigabit.....so it won't go to waste.
I nearly bought the Samsung EVO 500Gb ($244) but after reading all the reviews I decided that price and a little extra speed was not as important as reliability, compatibility, and the big one support.  I went to Samsung's support page and was not impressed at all.
Im now second guessing my disission to not purchase the lower priced EVO over the M550 or even the M500 because of your previous statement "I would shop strictly for the best price".
    Clinon, my question is:
Is the firmware the same for the M500 and M550?

  • Bootcamp will not install on my late 2012 mini Samsung EVO 840 1tb SSD

I recently replaced my 256gb OWC SSD in my late 2012 Mac Mini with a Samsung EVO 840 1tb.
    I did the following
    1) Using 10.9 recovery i initialized and created a single clean partition on the 1Tb SSD
    2) I installed a clean copy of 10.9
    3) Using migration assistant i transferred apps and documents from my previous SSD via a USB 3.0 adapter to the new SSD
    4) Using Bootcamp Assistant 5 I created an ISO version of a clean copy of Windows 7 Home Premium and downloaded the Apple updated Boot Camp drivers to the same 16gb Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 thumb drive
    5) Using Bootcamp Assistant created a 199gb Bootcamp partition on the new Samsung SSD which appeared to go to completion
    6) Mini restarted from the Bootcamp USB drive and Windows started successfully
    7) I chose Windows 7 Home Premium install
    8) I got the "which partition do you want to use to install Windows" screen, chose the Bootcamp partition, using the advanced option I chose format which appeared to complete, hit NEXT and then got an error that windows could not install because it could not find the NTFS partition, and then i was stuck.
When I rebooted I first got the Unable to find a bootable disk, hit any key error. I then physically shut down the computer, held down the alt key chose the Mac partition and the computer successfully booted. I could see the Bootcamp partition and according to Disk Utilities, the partition was formatted as NTFS.
The only connections to the Mini were a 30" Apple Cinema via a Apple Mini display connector, the keyboard and mouse via USB, and the USB Bootcamp Created 16gb Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 thumb drive. I also have an internal Apple 1 tb hard drive with no applications installed. In the apps installed on the Samsung does include Parallels 9.
What have i done wrong or missed? IF nothing it appears that the Bootcamp assistant supplied with 10.9 may have an issue with my Hardware setup including the Samsung EVO840 1tb drive.

There are known SATA speed issues with Macs and EVO 1TB. Please check in System Profiler -> SATA for SATA status of the EVO. It seems to work on OSX side, but not Bootcamp/Windows.
Please check for any firmware updates for the EVO on the Samsung website.

  • Expert advice on SSD performance bottleneck needed.

Masters of storage, please step forward...
I guess I need some technically advanced advice on SSD, SATA, in/out limits etc.
I'm programming a video installation where I continously read and write quite a lot of data:
To the first SSD, drive A, I write 50 frames per second (= 50 files per second) plus simultaneously read some other 50 fps (from the same drive!).
From a second SSD, drive B, I read an additional 50 frames per second.
The question is: Where is the bottle neck? I succeed running my program at 25 fps but not faster (and i would need to get it to 50 fps).
The total amount of data is actually not that excessive: Each frame is 1,8 MB so each stream is about 90 MB/s which comes down to a total of 180 MB/s read plus another 90 MB/s write = 270 MB/s total data transfer in 150 read/write operations per second.
What confuses me most is the following:
    - I get the same performance when I run the patch from two separate SSDs as when I run all three streams from a single one without using the second SSD at all.
    - The speed does not increase substantially if I make one or two of these streams smaller (and reduce the file size to 260 KB/file which equals only 13 MB/s per stream).
    - It does increase however (to 40-60 fps) if I switch all three streams to 260 KB/file.
This makes me wonder what is going on... is it the drives? Is it SATA? Or some other stuff I maybe even never heard of? And what can I do about it?
I use a Macbook Pro (Retina, early 2013, i7 2,6 GHz, 16 GB RAM, OS 10.9.2), drive A is a Samsung 840 pro 256 GB SSD connected via thunderbolt, drive B is the internal 512 GB Macbook SSD (built-in from Apple).
My program is built in MAX/MSP and I use a an arbitrary, uncompressed binary data format (.jxf). I can rule out CPU-/GPU-load issues.
Thanks for any help, it is appreciated a lot!

I'll pass this along because it seems to make sense. I only discovered noatime myself today and set it up using these instructions; it doesn't seem to break anything so far and should speed things up some as well as reduce wear. There's also mention of Chameleon which can activate TRIM but also turn noatime on. There's a discussion of atime and noatime here. Note that there's mention of relatime replacing atime as default though what the upside and downside of the variations are is above my paygrade.
If you're going to tinker with .plists, I'd suggest using TextWrangler.

  • Crucial M4 128GB VS Samsung 840 120GB - Mid-2012 MacBook Pro

I would like to put an SSD in my Mid-2012 MacBook Pro. As the tradition HDD is a real bottle neck the system. Space is not really an issue, but price is at the moment. It's between these two, Crucial M4 128GB VS Samsung 840 120GB, just to be used for everyday use, thoughts?

I'm a huge Crucial fan - I have a 512GB Crucial m4 SSD series installed right now and am eagerly awaiting the shipment of the Crucial M500 960GB SSD. One thing that I love about Crucial is that you can accomplish firmware updates directly on your Mac - with Samsung, I believe, you have to use a Windows machine.
Crucial SSDs are perfect for Macs - many of us around here have them.
The only problem that I see that you may run into is getting the data from your hard drive (you don't say how much space you're using on it) to a 128GB SSD. If you're under 128GB on your HD then you can just clone your data and OS, etc., onto the new SSD. Or you can make a 'fresh' start and format the drive and install the OS and then begin the laborious task of adding your apps back.
See my one and only user tip - Upgrading your MacBook Pro with a Solid State Drive - for some tips on transferring that data. I've always used Carbon Copy Cloner - but then I've always been moving to a SSD that was comparable in space to my 'old' HD.

  • Walk me thru replacing my good HD to Samsung EVO-840 500GB SSD

Please walk me thru replacing my good HD to Samsung EVO-840 500GB SSD. I need Help. I did back up to Time Machime. I do have a HD USB enclosure. Some level 6 and 7 reps are suggesting purchasing cloneing software to do the job. Please advise the best route for me. I also want to upgrade my memory at the same time. Much thanks.

    Mustang69conv wrote:
...How and when do I transfer/install everything from my good old HD to my new SSD? What program do I use? How do I do it?...
Since you aren't upgrading your OS and you're not starting over with a new computer, your old HD is already fully compatible with what you want on your new SSD. So, with your HD installed in your external USB enclosure, boot from it (hold down the option key after the chime and pick the external drive), then clone the external onto the SSD after you partition the SSD to GUID Partition Table (click the Options..Button), one partition. Carbon Copy Cloner does the job for making a bootable clone; other software, such as Superduper does too. Assuming the SSD is big enough to receive the contents of the HD with room to spare, you're done.
Obviously it's also possible to do a fresh install of the OS you're already running and then use Setup Assistant to migrate your settings and files to the SSD. I've found, however, that some settings, such as Network configurations, can get lost that way, as can authorizations for software you've had to buy and register.

  • Half the speed on Samsung EVO 850 SSD

I just installed a Samsung EVO 850 500GB SSD in my mid-2010 iMac with 27" monitor and 2.93GHz i7 processor.  According to Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, I am only getting 255MB/s read and write speeds when the SSD is advertised as 2x this fast.  Why am I only getting half the R/W speeds.  Running the latest version of Yosemite.

I may have just discovered my own answer.    My 2010 iMac I believe has a SATA II controller which operates at 3Gb/sec unlike SATA III which does 6Gb/sec.   Is that the answer?

  • [HELP] Macbook Pro won't boot Samsung Evo SSD internally

I recently bought a 512 Gb Samsung Evo SSD for my 2011 Macbook Pro. After cloning the harddrive using superduper! I installed the harddrive internally and booted it up. I first received an error saying "Unapproved Caller SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple Software". Confused, I hit OK and it proceeded to showing the Apple bootup screen with the spiral underneath. I decided to restart the machine and this time I did not receive the error, however it just got stuck at the apple boot up screen with the spiral spinning for days. I brought it to Tigerdirect and they tried everything they could (apparently) and had no luck with cloning, fresh install, reinstalling OS, and so on. They told me the Boot Rom only (for some reason) recognizes the original seagate HDD and my boot rom is messed up. Freaking out, I tried placing the SSD in the computer and connect the original HDD via USB 3.0. I booted the HDD by holding down option during bootup then proceeded to system preferences and tried to changed the start up disk to the SSD. However, I received an error saying Bless tool was unable to set boot disk. I am now at a loss, and worried my pricey SSD will become dead weight. Please help
    Thanks for anyones help

Were you ever able to fix the problem, I have the same issue.

  • Advice for ADF migration.

    Hi ,
We have an internal application made in forms/reports. As now Oracle's strategic product for future developement is ADF. So we are planning to migrate the same internal application on ADF. We have 2 options :
1.We should use Jheadstart to migrate to ADF but then we also have to re-write all the functionality of PL/SQL ?? OR
    2. We should start developing the application from scratch in ADF?? Or
    Please advice.
    Thanks.

    Noman,
    Few comments:
    - if they build from scratch they still have to re-implement the functionality currently implemented using PL/SQL logic in Forms.
    - if they don't use the JHeadstart Forms2ADF generator they still can use JHeadstart with ADF to build the app from scratch. Actually, most existing customers are using JHeadstart that way.
There is no easy answer for which option to choose. This depends on many factors, for example the structure of the forms app. I quote from the JHeadstart Developers guide:
The amount of work that can be saved by using the JHeadstart Forms2ADF Generator very much depends on the structure of the Oracle Forms application at hand. The JHeadstart Forms2ADF Generator provides most savings for forms that have the following characteristics:
+· Complex user interface, many (stacked) canvasses, many tabs, many list of values, and other display types+
+· Standard-Forms data retrieval and data manipulation through blocks based on database tables, with master-detail relations defined between the block+
+· PL/SQL logic mostly limited to user interface dynamics: conditionally showing/hiding user interface items, and conditionally changing the properties of user interface items. While JHeadstart does not convert PL/SQL logic, this type of logic is easily implemented in the ADF application because JHeadstart provides many declarative property settings to implement this behavior.+
JHeadstart has made the deliberate choice to not automatically convert the PL/SQL logic to Java. The reasons for this are:
+· It is impossible to automate the migration of a two-tier architecture (logic in Forms or in the database) to a three tier Model-View-Controller architecture as is common in JEE web applications, including ADF-based applications.+
+· The architecture of the converted application should be identical to the best-practice architecture of an ADF application that is build from scratch. If the architecture is the same, the same skill set can be used to maintain both migrated applications and ADF applications build from scratch. In addition, by going for a best practice architecture, the application is more flexible, and can be maintained easier at lower cost.+
+· When using the JHeadstart Forms2ADF Generator, you get this best-practice ADF architecture that is identical to ADF/JHeadstart applications that are built from scratch.+
Note: Other Forms2ADF conversion tools currently available have taken a different approach. They focus on automating the conversion of PL/SQL to Java. The architecture of such a converted application is different from a best-practice JEE/ADF web application. The architecture is more Forms-like, sometimes even including typical forms constructs like “GO_BLOCK” in the converted Java source code. The user interface produced by these migration tools is often a Java applet.  If your primary intent is to move away from Oracle Forms, and you are less concerned about the structure and architecture of the target Java application, then these other conversion tools might be a valid choice. However, if you want to migrate to a best-practice ADF architecture, then the JHeadstart Forms2ADF Generator is the best choice.
We offer this Forms2ADF Transformation Assessment Service:

  • Need advice on network migration

    Hi experts !
Good day to you all! I would like to have your advice regarding our plan to
migrate our customer network as I'm need to know whether our migration plan
is feasible to work on. I would like also to know what other good
alternatives that we could refer to beside our own migration plan. Our
migration plan is concentrated on the top level of both network which is the
most critical part. During the implementation of new network, we want to
retain the existing network set up (internet gateway and firewall) and at
the same time, set up both C7204VXR (we called it 'border-router') and two
new firewall accordingly. Based on the diagram, both firewall (which are
configured as a cluster) are using the existing firewall (Firewall-A) as
their temporary 'default gateway' since both 'border-router' on the new set
up has not yet connected to new leased-line services.
'Border-router', firewall cluster and existing firewall (Firewall-A) are
connected to a plain (unmanaged) switch in 111.168.100.0/27 network. The
existing firewall (Firewall-A) is in routed/NAT mode. One interface is
connected to their internal network and another connected to the new
network. Routing is shall be done on the existing firewall itself. Both
'border-router' would use GLBP for redundancy and similar to firewall
cluster which has its own virtual-IP. Once both 'border-router' are
connected to new leased-line services, the firewall cluster will pointing to
GLBP of 'border-router' as its 'default-gateway'. In terms of routing, I
going to use static routing configured in firewalls and 'border-router' as
initial start and might change to a dynamic routing (if possible) once the
    migration is fully complete.
    So, my questions are;
    i. Based on your understanding, is this plan workable?
ii. Alternative ways to plan for better migration?
iii. In term of IP addressing, is this okay? (Note: IP address are not real
but the address arrangement is same)
I'm new to this migration and I seek for advice on this.
    Thanks very much and regards,
    Daniel Alex
p/s: If you need more explanation, I'm feel really glad to give.

    Hi Alex,
In terms of GLBP I would make sure that I'ld use the "host dependent" load-balancing algorithm, so your hosts accessing the internet use always the same source IP when communicating with a server.

Your plan looks fine do far. You could have planned the new inside network as a temporary DMZ on the old firewall, so the transition runs smoothly ..

  • Advice/Help needed migrating/working with two macs

I currently own a mid-2010 (I think) Macbook Pro and a couple of months ago I bought a Mac Mini. Unfortunately when I set up the Mac Mini I was short on time and my excitement/lack of patience got the better of me so I copied everything on the HDD from my MBP over to the Mac Mini and I have been using the same profile to login on both machines.
This causes a few problems, particularly when I'm trying to connect the two machines via a network to share files. They can never connect, I'm thinking probably because they're using the same profile and get confused. I also haven't taken the time to properly install all the applications and so some do not work on the mini.
Rather than trying to pull my hair out trying to solve the issues, I think I've reached a point where I think I need to either start over or get some advice on what to do.
Ideally I'd like to use the Mini mainly for music apps (Garageband, possibly Logic Pro X in the future) and occassional internet and iTunes use. Since it has a bigger HDD, I'd like to store my music on the Mini.
I would then use the MBP as my general internet and iTunes machine. I would however like to be able to use it for music production stuff (again GB and/or Logic) if I am travelling. I know that I will need to upgrade the OS and the RAM which I am happy to do.
I would like to be able to have most of the same apps on both machines and also be able to easily transfer files, music etc. between the two.
So in light of what I'd like to achieve, what would be my best course of action? Would I be best to start over and try to migrate from fresh or can I make something work with what I have?
A further complication is that I have since used both machines so I will have some new stuff saved on both machines that won't be on the other. Is there any way to keep these new files if I start over?
Would anyone be gracious enough to point me in the direction of an easy to follow guide to help me achieve what I want?
Sorry for the long-winded post (and if I've posted in the wrong section) but I really think I lept into the migration without really knowing what I was doing and I could really use some advice to help me work out what to do!

With your project open, press Shift + Q to open System Settings.
Where are your render files being stored to? The path should be pointing to your external. I'm betting that it's set to your system drive instead.

  • Advice on a migration - or networking - strategy ?

Hello. I am trying to map a logical strategy on how to do the following.
I have a recording studio with an IMac 24 running 10.6.  It has all of my must-have apps and internet
    connectivity.
I want to have identical capabilities on a separate IMac - located in another room.
I bought a used IMac which came loaded with 10.6 and is base set of apps/features.
It seems I have a couple of options... Some form of networking where the added computer somehow
would access the 'main' computer - or - running Migration Assistant and transferring the identity and
contents of the first computer over to the newly bought computer.  I'm looking for the simplest and
    easiest solution.
All computers have either ethernet and/or wireless access to my Airport Extreme/router connected to a Cable Modem.
I have never really messed with networking per se.  This second machine would easily be in range for wi-fi web connection.
It's been quite a while since i've needed to deal with Migration Assistant and I don't want to wind up doing something
irreversible.  If I were to connect the newly purchased Imac to the existing computer, do i have the option to selectively
choose what gets carried over and what doesn't - like...if i don't want to clutter it with a lot of stuff that doesn't need to
be on the target machine - just the must-have stuff -  like my recording, web access settings, Thunderbird email app and
settings, and want to leave out excess things it really wouldn't require, would Migration ***'t allow me to itemize things
that way i.e. customize the transfer?
Is there any reason i would have to "wipe" the OS on the target drive to do this
or can i get away with just leaving the OS that's already installed on it, as-is, before i would run Migration Assistant?
I'd hate to get into some weird Permissions issues that might be introduced...i never know quite how to resolve those
situations as it's happened in the past.
What i simply want to come away with is another Mac with pretty much all the same apps and internet/email access as
my other machine... IF it was simple enough to use networking and make this 2nd machine capable of accessing/using
all the main IMac's features and internet/email connection, i would consider that route but it seems more complicated...
Sorry but i'm only an IT guy when I am forced to make changes and i just want to do it right 'the first time' so i appreciate
any step-by-step on how to get this done in a sensible and straightforward way....and thanks very much!
    MIke

    Hi Mike,
Best/easiest way is with the old one in Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Use MA on the new one to Migrate everything, no detailed choices so it's best to get it all & remove what you don't need later.
Other way would be the new one in Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Then clone the old one to the new one for identical everything.
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...

Even cheap and small SSDs have TRIM-support (like mine) and it's virtually impossible to run out of write-cycles (or what ever is used for mesuring the endurance of the drive) in less than five-ten years (with modern SSDs that is). One shouldn't keep the drive full in any case (were it SSD or HDD, I personally probably haven't ever even went over 50% in usage with SSD) so that really isn't a problem. I haven't noticed any performance degration either. I bet that there aren't many expecting the SSD you buy for 40-50€ to be "everlasting",  in the same way that probably no knowledgeable persons excpect HDDs to last more than 4 years safely. If there really is a problem, what's it precisely? Of course the more expensive and bigger drivers are better but is it worth it to pay more for something you probably never benefirt from, added performance isn't exactly useful if the bottleneck is somewhere else.
