Advice on trading car in

Hello all, I have a question.. well more like I would like some opinions on my current situation. My fiance and I currently have a 2015 Hyundai Veloster Turbo with 10k miles on it. We used to lease a 2013 Honda Accord, but last year we decided we wanted a new and different car without the Accord's lease being done. So we tacked on negative equity (about $11,000.. yes it was a stupid decision but now we are stuck with it) So the total of the Veloster came out ot be 36k (value of the car is like 24k when we bought it brand new). Right now we owe 28k left on it. We pay $485 a month for a 6 year lease with $3,000 down.  Well, here is the thing. My fiance wants to try and trade in the Veloster to a dealership to get a lease for 3 years. Where they'd tack on the negative equity ontop of the payment for the lease and make it around the same we are currently paying a month ($485). Let's say the lease itself is $200 a month, well then they'd add the negative equity to that so we'd pay it off by 3 years (something like that). But at the end of the lease we'd have no car and would have to buy another one all over again. After 3 years we'd have paid about 17k, then if we were to get a new car around 16k it'd add up to about 36k (inlcuding our 3,000 down when we bought the Veloster) altogether for a (not as nice a car as the Veloster) in the end.  I say we keep the Veloster, and after 3 years of paying $485 a month there will be only 11k left and then we'd have it paid off in 2 years and own the car with no more payments.  He says he wants to get out of debt as soon as possible. But if we lease a car and then buy another one we'd still be making payments and will be in debt. Any advice? I just want other peoples unbiased opinions. I appreciate it greatly.

Not leasing it?  If he wants to get out of debt, then build up your savings and pay down the neg equity on the current vehicle or better yet, pay the car off and keep it a while to enjoy no payments at all. Note:  It sounds like he may be saying he can't afford the payment any longer. If you find out that is what is going on, then rework your budget. You might need to sell it and pay off the neg equity and start over with another vehicle. But don't trade - every trade hurts you when you owe money on the vehicle. Each trade builds up debt - it doesn't get rid of debt.

  • Advice on Navigation Car Kits

    Hi All,
i'd like to hear from you that have seen or used both the Magellan & TomTom Car Kits Please.
Are they much the same or is one far better unit than the other?
I guess all i'd like it to do is be able to charge the battery, have a good speaker & good GPS signal.
I can't really think of any other feature i may need? never having a GPS before
The iTunes App that'll be used i have yet to buy but i'm guessing it'll be the MetroView Australia
it seems good value at $25:00, the TomTom is at $80: the Navigon is at $90: ATM.
So the MVA is a no brainer if u live in the land of Oz that is.

I've owned the Magellan kit and played with the TomTom kit and the TomTom kit is definitely superior. My biggest complaint with the Magellan was the built in speaker didn't shut off automatically when you had the cradle connected to an aux jack. You had to turn the sound down on the speaker with a very tiny dial on the side of the unit. The TomTom is a much more intelligent unit in this regard.
I also didn't like the fact that on the Magellan the button to answer the speakerphone was on the backside of the unit and was difficult to locate when you were driving which pretty much negated the advantages of "hands free" for your car. A plus for the Magellan though is that if you have a case on your phone it is adjustable to fit. It's pretty clever the way they handle that. The TomTom kit is designed for a bare phone. The hands free on the TomTom kit works via bluetooth and is definitely better quality.
You don't mention if you have a 3 series or 4 series phone. If you have an iPhone 4 you'll have a problem with the TomTom but I believe they just released a (free?) adaptor for it that will work with the new phone. Other folks on the web had also come up with their own fixes for that as well. The TomTom comes with a windshield mount but I believe ProClip is selling a custom TomTom kit with a standard 4 hole mount plate in case you already have a mounting system in your vehicle. www.proclipusa.com for info.
Personally, I don't think either one is a necessary solution. The GPS in my iPhone 3GS was good enough on its own and the GPS in my iPhone4 is excellent. I'm using a Blueant S4 hands free unit on the visor which is working perfectly and is 100% hands free with total voice command operation with a 3GS or 4. I went with an adjustable Cradle from ProClip for my iPhone 4 that has a passthrough connector and I've attached a cable to the cradle that includes a USB charger plugged into a lighter socket adaptor and a stereo connector plugged into the aux jack on my car stereo. Incoming calls automatically shut down the sound to the radio and route the call out to the bluetooth. The Blueant S4 supports A2DP audio over bluetooth so you can hear your turn-by-turn GPS commands via the Blueant or over the car stereo via Aux input in my case.
    Hope that helps you out!
    James
P.S. The iphone dock cable that gives you usb and audio out via mini-din jack can be found on ebay.

  • Advice on In Car Products

Hi. I am really struggling to find the best solution to use my Xperia Z3 Compact in my car. My previous phone was a HTC One and I was able to purchase a great Phone Holder to fix to my windscreen that put my phone into Car Mode so things like calls & texts were announced and read and calls were answered in loud speaker, also I had a Bluetooth dongle that plugged into my Aux port on my car stereo so I could listen to music on my phone & Google play but music was instantly silenced when a call came in. I have tried to use this dongle with my Z3 compact but it constantly connects & disconnects & when a call comes in, it just plays it through my phone instead of my speakers & doesn't go quite allowing me to answer. I've looked at various products but unlike HTC who create these solutions to work with thier handsets, I can't find anything to work with a sony handset that works seamlessly. Please can you advise on how I can get the best out of my phone in my car. For me this is a deal breaker, so if I can't make it work effectively I will be selling my handset to replace with a HTC. Many Thanks

Its a holder that is mounted on your windscreen. I'm not sure what you mean by contact your local Xperia care, that's why I have posted here. I have checked on eBay and Amazon and of course I can just buy some random product that turns out to be a waste of money, but I was led to believe this forum is a useful resource so I am asking for assistance. My question was for information on Sony Official, Approved or compatible equipment that does what I have described. I surely can't be the only one that wants to make their phone work effectively in their car for calls, texts and music!!!!!! What I am looking for is a) a suitable car mode on the handset itself so that calls get answered immediately on speaker phone, text messages & calls get announced etc. b) how can I connect my handset to my car stereo via Aux to play music which then gets silenced as a call comes in. And C) I need a cradle to hold my handset that fixes to the windscreen that is suitable for my phone as many non Sony cradles cover the buttons such as the power button that is on the side in the middle.

  • Any advice about my car loan?

I asked this in the auo loan thread but no one is answering me there. We had a repo in 2013.  We bought a car in Oct 14 and got a terrible deal.  Our interest rate is 10.25%.  We have a 72 month loan and our monthly payment is $386.  Right now we owe $19,000 on the loan and Kelly Blue book says its worth about $15,000. I don't think our credit has improved much since we bought the car.  Maybe a few points.  We haven't started trying to address our score until very recently. What's the best way to handle this?  With our budget, after bills and groceries - we could probably pay around $300 a month on top of our regular payment most months. Should we do that for a year and then try to refinance?  Is there any other option I'm not thinking of?  I know Dave Ramsey types would say dump it and get a beater but we don't have any cash lying around for a car so we're just going to get up with a terrible interest rate - and no down payment.  So I don't feel like there's enough of a "pay-off" for the sacrifice.

It can get tough when you're dealing with negative equity. Different banks use different lending guidelines when it comes to determining how much they are willing to lend in the first place for any specific vehicle, and the amount they will lend you will also depend on your credit. So even if you applied to refinance right now, there's no guarantee that the bank/lender you applied with would be willing to lend the amount you need to refinance. Basically, some lenders don't want to risk giving you a $19K loan on a car that's only worth $15K or less. You know that, though.  I work in auto finance, so I always recommend to people in your situation to pay as MUCH as you possibly can to close the gap on what you owe vs. what you think the car is worth. Call around to several different banks and give them the VIN and the mileage and ask how much they might lend on it in order for you to figure out which lenders are more generous for what they're willing to finance for vehicles. 10% is definitely not horrible for a 72 month loan. I have people calling me to try to refinance 17%-25% on a regular basis. Also, make sure your overpayments go to principle if possible. I wouldn't recommend applying to refinance until you know the amount you owe is where it needs to be so you avoid unnecessary credit pulls and hurt your credit further. Another option would be to trade it in and use the same guidelines to find a bank willing to allow the negative equity to be rolled into the new purchase. But that doesn't solve anything except HOPEFULLY getting a lower APR if you buy a newer car or if your credit has improved since purchasing the last one. You're better off to try to just pay down the one you have if it's still running fine. Why take on more debt if the car works?

  • Need advice on a car adapter for SGPT112US/S

I'm really surprised to think that Sony hasn't provided a USB adapter for this tablet.  Seems a simple thing to do, in view of the fact that it is so basic and a NECESSITY!   Please provide me with the specs (like voltage output requirements) so I can buy an aftermarket one.  It appears that the 5v USB output on my computer is insufficient to do the job either.  I saw that an inverter for the ac adapter was mentioned, but I think thats not what I would want.

I find it interesting that Sony would offer a mobile device dependent solely on household current.  No, I think the word rediculous is more appropriate.  So,  I can use the GPS on the road, as long as the drive is no longer than 8 hours, or less, based on the fact that the battery really won't last as long as it was stated in the marketing literature.  Come on Sony!  All the development costs to build the tablet, then get chintzy on such a cheap thing to make.  At least tell me what the input voltage should be so I can buy something compatible.   This is BS

  • CDs I burn won't play on car player

I have no problems burning audio CDs with itunes. The CDs play great on every CD player EXCEPT the on in my car, which is where I really want to use them. I've burnt MP3 files to audio CDs using other software and they play just fine in my car, just not the CDs I create with itunes. Any suggestions? And trading cars is not an acceptable suggestion! Thanks.

Dunno what the issue is, but I've been having the same problem for a while.  Disks I burn on my arch box actually cause some settop players to hardlock.  ISOs I created a few months ago burn fine, but newly created ones, even of the same media, do not.  All of them play fine on any computer I throw them in - linux, Mac, or windows.

  • Seeking alternative advice for possible HD failure...

My poor PB is just 4 months old and I'm not sure how, but I think the HD decided to quite (it clicks/whirs/clacks in ways similar to my previous notebook computer shortly before it quit).
I cannot access anything on the HD itself, but can get to disk utility by way of the installation CD. When I try to run the utility I am not allowed to verify disk permissions or verify disk. When I try to verify, it says failure, could not unmount disk.
If I try to repair disk permissions or repair disk, the computer starts the process, but just clicks and whirs FOREVER. It never actually does anything...
the S.M.A.R.T. status shows verified, which should indicate the HD is ok (I assume).
I need my computer immediately... what would be some advice for taking care of my problem? My current location is TOO FAR from an Apple Store to take it for repairs. Anything I can do on my own to solve this?
I haven't tried it yet, (a bit afraid to) but I have considered erasing the disk. The file losses would be minimal, but if there is another route for solving this issue, I would rather go that way.
Thank you for any and all advice you have!!!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, BeckyJ.
I think your PowerBook's hard drive is failing and there isn't really much you can do except replace the drive. Normally Apple will replace the drive under warranty - either sent in or at an Apple Authorised Service Provider.
However as you need the computer immediately and don't wish to go via the warranty replacement route, then the only option available is to source a new drive (at your own expense) and replace the drive yourself. Installation instructions are available here. I do need to warn you that the process is not easy for anyone unfamiliar with working on the insides of a notebook computer and will invalidate the warranty.

  • Can't launch Adobe Reader 11.0.06: 'An internal error occurred'

Today I purchased a highly recommended e-book ('Rally All Around') which is available by download. Double clicking on its file brought up a message that I needed a newer version of Adobe Reader, and linked me directly to 11.0.06 (Mac) on the Adobe site, which I downloaded and installed. Unfortunately, this application refuses to launch: irrespective of whether I try to launch it directly, from the Applications Folder, or by double clicking the new book, I receive the 'An internal error occurred' error message and the program shuts down. I have followed the advice provided in this forum for a previous version of Reader: I deleted all existing versions of the program, as well as the Adobe Folder in my Library, then attempted to reinstall. I've also used 'Get Info' to ensure I have the required read/write permissions on the application, and the Adobe Library Folder. Unfortunately now I have lost the ability to open any PDF file at all!  I'm very unimpressed (to say the least!) that I have lost hours trying to troubleshoot this problem, as well as my money for the book and functionality on my machine! I am running Mac OS X 10.9.1 on an Intel Core i5. I'd be grateful for help, and advice, if you care to share. I'd like to count to 10 and try and fix this, before succumbing to the temptation to send a howler to the publisher.

I did eventually solve it, and I think it was using this advice I received on the Adobe Forums:
The error that you are facing might be due the reason that the user logged in doesn't have permissions to access the following directory: "~/Library/Application Support/Adobe". Can you please try the following steps with the user account in which you are facing the error:
    1. Remove the Adobe Reader from Applications directory by moving it to Trash.
    2. Now delete the following directory: "~/Library/Application Support/Adobe". Please note that this path is for the Library folder present inside the user directory that you are currently logged in.
    3. Restart the machine.
    4. Now re-install Adobe Reader XI.

  • Archive and Install/Disc Utility issues -

I'm currently spending a summer abroad in South America, and have had issues with my Macbook Pro (early 2011 version) no longer starting up after some virus experiences last week.  The computer hangs itself during loading on the white screen w/ grey apple and the spinning dial.  In contacts with Apple Care as well as some Mac-saavy friends, the following situations have been tried:
Opening in safe mode - The loading bar (added at the bottom of the grey apple screen) loads about 1/4 of the way, disappears, and the computer hangs itself.
Opening in single user mode - I run the recommended sbin/fsck -fy command to clean up the hard drive.  It comes back after having checked 6-7 parts, saying that the MacHD is in good shape, with a message following saying that something had been "modified" (forgive me for not remembering the correct verbage at present).  I then run the same command again, resulting in a message that the HD is clean and without error.  I then "reboot" and remain hung on the white screen w/ grey apple.
Opening in verbose mode - I reach the following lines of text, and then there is no further progress:
    enable
    IONetworkController::enable
    createMediumTables
    enable end
MacAuthEvent en0   Auth result for: 00:23:cd:1e:f2:c4 No Ack
same line as above saying "Auth timed out" at the end
Command+option+r+p - shock two or three times, (three startup chimes) and computer continues to hang itself in the normal spot.
    - So, at this point I took the advice of Apple Care and a few other friends, and tracked down a "retail copy" of Mac OSX (10.6.3) in order to try to do an Archive and Install or any sort of Disc Utility via the startup disc.
Inserting the disc and holding "c" at startup results in the cd drive whirring the disc for a few moments, and then remaining hung at the same white loading screen.
Holding "option" during the startup gives me the option of loading from the HD, or the disc.  Selecting the disc proceeds to whirr the cd drive, take me to the white loading screen with the grey apple, and... you guessed it... leaves the CPU hung.
My question is then, is my Macbook Pro unable to read this disc and execute Archive and Install/Disc Utility for hardware reasons as per the virus attack, or is the disc not compatible with my version of OSX (which I have since confirmed through my wife to be 10.6.6)?
Different sources have told me different things.  The local AASP in Uruguay sold me what they professed to be the "latest" version of OSX - the 10.6.3, what's more for $55 dollars instead of the lower cost as available in the states (between $15-$30), so I am reluctant to go back to them for advice when they seem more inclined to cash in on my inexperience (Mac owner of less than a month) than actually fixing my issue.  Apple Care told me that a standard "retail disc" should work, but I am assuming now that they believe I can snag the same version as initially came with my Macbook Pro.  Should I be looking to have my wife mail my original OSX install DVDs down here to resolve this problem?  Should 10.6.3-retail be working and is not for reasons I haven't identified?  I have since done some online research and found mentions that doing any sort of HD partitioning or OSX reinstalls can only be accomplished by utilizing a disc of an equal or more recent version of the OSX (examples that 10.4 can't work on a notebook preinstalled with 10.5, etc).  Does this translate to 10.6.3 not being able to function for my 10.6.6 MBP?
Any insight or thoughts would be much appreciated, as essentially all of my schoolwork and assignments are now trapped on an inaccessible HD.  Thank you for your time.
    - Joseph

I tried adding in a bunch of information about what your troubleshooting steps meant, but the server went into maintenance while I did. So, here it is again:
"Opening in safe mode - The loading bar (added at the bottom of the grey apple screen) loads about 1/4 of the way, disappears, and the computer hangs itself."
This is FSCK running, and gives you an indication of it's progress.
"MacAuthEvent en0   Auth result for: 00:23:cd:1e:f2:c4 No Ack"
This is either a failed DHCP request or ARP request.
    "Command+option+r+p"
         Command+Option+P+R - Resets PRAM. That's why p+r.
"Inserting the disc and holding "c" at startup results in the cd drive whirring the disc for a few moments, and then remaining hung at the same white loading screen."
This problem indicates that the disc is too old to boot your system. The reason for why this disc cannot boot is because it doesn't contain the necessary drivers for your model MacBook Pro. My mom and brother have similar models, and my brother had similar issues while in Japan. He went and got an install disc as well, which failed, I ended up stepping him through so that it would boot in Safe Mode, and then got it working in Normal Mode remotely.
FYI: Sophos has a free Mac Antivirus program, that is very processing friendly, and will scan in the background. You may wish to consider it as an alternative to Avast! if it continues giving you problems. Though I suspect it may be coincidence that your computer had problems shortly after Avast! cleaned up files. Let me know how it goes. You may wish to open up Disk Utility and check your S.M.A.R.T. Status. You want to make sure it says "Verified" If it doesn't say "Verified" then you have a problem.

  • I can't burn any CDs.  Error 4280.  No solutions found in similar threads yet.

    Hi all,
I can't seem to burn any of my music (purchased OR ripped from my own CD collection) in iTunes all of a sudden.  It begins the process, then cancels about a minute in and returns an error code of 4280.  I have researched it on the web for a month now, with no success.
Some say it's a problem with Sony drives.  I don't have a sony drive.
Some say I need to update my iTunes and/or restart my computer. I have done both - no change.
Some say I need to decrease the write speed.  I have attempted it at 16X, 8X, and 1X, with no success.
iTunes CD diagnostics suggested unclicking the CD Text option.  I did.  Still canceled the burn.
I know the drive recognizes the discs, because if I close iTunes and insert a blank disc, I get the pop-up window with options, and it will play audio and video.
I'm running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)
    Drive: Matshita DVD-RAM UJ--845S
    Acer Aspire 5670
    iTunes 10.5.1.42
    QuickTime 7.7.1
    Apple Application Support 2.1.5
    iPod Updater Library 10.0d2
    CD Driver 2.2.0.1
    CD Driver DLL 2.1.1.1
Does anyone have a solution?  Or anything I can try that I haven't already?  I have read over 30 threads now that offer no help, so please, do not repost link to threads as help unless you have read them and have found that they contain suggestions that I have not covered here.  And thank you for taking the time to assist me.

-also ran "Repair" with new download of iTunes
-am using the same spindle of CDs that worked perfectly a month ago.  Tried another brand also to be safe.  None worked.
-ran CD/DVD diagnostics within iTunes with Apple Care - no issues apparent
-also tried write-speed 20X on advice of Apple Care (don't know why they thought 20X would be the magic number after the other 3 I tried didn't work)
-tried running itunes in another user account on the computer - same problem, same error code
-Apple suggested it was a copyright issue.  I can't even burn music that I created/recorded myself, so that doesn't make sense.
-They thought maybe Quicktime wasn't installed properly, so we checked a film in Windows Media - it played, meaning Quicktime was fine apparently.
    Solution:
Unclicked CD text option & Sound Check, ran burn from the File drop down menu (max speed) on a Philips CD-R and it worked!  Had been right clicking the playlist name and selecting Burn option from there.  That being said, it did not work on 2 other brands prior, with same settings.  Not sure why.  Just happy it's working again. Is it a brand issue?

  • No space remaining on hard drive

My wife's MacBook Unibody (late 2008) is having a recurring hard drive problem where some program or utility is consuming nearly all available space on the internal drive.
The computer's original configuration is as follows:
    2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (2 cores)
    4GB DDR-3 1066MHz RAM (2 X 2GB SODIMMs)
    160GB SATA Hard Drive
OS X 10.5 (Leopard) + any updates to that version
Following the advice of Apple Care and a knowledgable friend who's also a MacBook user we updated the operating system to the newest version of OS-X, Mountain Lion.
I also updated the hardware to best compliment the newer version of OS X. I recently upgraded the memory to 8GB and installed an 80GB Corsair SSD with the latest firmware. Both seemed to alleviate the issue of performance and my wife stated that she perceived a big increase in performance from the original hardware.
She's also using an external USB Hard Drive, 1.5TB Seagate with a dedicated AC power adaptor, for her time machine backups. She also uses this as her storage drive for any files larger than 1GB. So all that remains on her internal drive, the 80GB SSD, are the OS and installed programs. After the initial setup of Mountain Lion she had over 30GB of space remaining on that drive with no apparent problems.
The problem has occurred again, consuming all user-available space on the internal SSD. There aren't any other programs, applications or utilities that we can see to account for the loss of usable sapce.
Could this be a bug within the NVIDIA MCP79MXT-B2 Chipset?

We did use a program to determine what was taking up the space, but it appeared to be some glitch that was writing multiple gigabytes of log file entries. Without an alternative solution we've just been identifying and deleting these every couple of months. We're uncertain whether its a hardware, firmware or software problem that's writing these log files that are invisible to OS-X's build in file management system. If it weren't for a free 3rd party app, cannot recall the name at the moment, then we wouldn't be able to see and delete these log files - rendering the computer unusable.

I don't have a wacom tablet, nor have I ever used one. Yet the ink icon has just recently began appearing randomly. A small menu icon, appears next to the volume control in the menu bar. It also appears under system preferences between keyboard and mouse and the print and fax preferences.
The ink icon and preference option will just mysteriously also disappear within a few minutes.
I don't have a wireless card in my mac pro. I also double checked to see if all bluetooth options are turn off. I have two hard drives both with separate installations of OS X. This has happened on both installs.
The only thing new is a airport extreme base station. The airport is being used by only two computers my 2008 mac pro and a imac out in the living room. Both are using ethernet no wireless.
At first I suspected the airport was picking up a stray signal from a neighbor using a wacom tablet.
But I think thats unlikely since any wireless tablet would be using bluetooth.
I did also upgrade to ilife 09. Again I don't see how ilife 09 could cause trouble like this.
I have googled to see if anyone else may have experienced anything like this. I have found nothing helpful.
Any one have any ideas To what might cause this?

    Anyone?
Just today at the early A.M. my mac pro woke from sleep

    May 6 12:50:54 johns-mac-pro kernel[0]: USB (EHCI):Port 5 on bus 0xfd has remote wakeup from some device
All bluetooth options are turned off. I have no bluetooth devices nor have I ever used one with this mac. I also have wake for ethernet administrator disabled. I also checked to see if their were any scheduled wake events.
Just before this morning on the advice from Apple care I did both a PSM and PRAM reset. To see if that would element the random appearing ink icon. From My first post.
I think Their is a problem with my bluetooth chip receiving signals when is not sopped to. The chip is not turning off?
    Ant ideas

  • Does Mobile Me shut down features in iWeb 08 after it expires?

My problem, iWeb publishes a ? mark where the video should be.
Hi everybody. Since I quit Mobile Me ( i just had enough of the speed complaints), all my icons for each page inside iWeb are red, regardless if they were worked on or not. Also, i just tried to add a new video and when published to my ftp site, I get a Quicktime symbol with a ? mark inside of it when viewed on the net. Is the software preventing me from publishing video, or am I doing something wrong with how I compress video? I have uploaded video to this site before. Here is the link http://www.barehoof.com/Movement_Study.html Also, on i am not able to see the name of this same page on my home page and it is ticked to do so. I have to admit, I love the easy of iWeb but i am spending to much time on trying to get it to work right. Manually ftp'ing to another site, one changed file at a time is a pain. I am hoping I am showing my ignorance in how to use ftp and iWeb properly and sure could use some advice as apple care does not help in this case either.
    Happy New Year,
    Dan

iWeb only allows QuickTime file formats be used and writes page code (and folder structure) when you "Publish" to a folder. The QuickTime page elements are written to special javascript files and stored inside the Media folder.
When I looked for your source file (based on your page code and javascript) I got a "not found" error message. Other files from your Site are found and work as intended:
    http://www.barehoof.com/Media/Lucas%20Clip.mov
You should be aware that spaces and punctuation should not be used for Web based files. And, since all of the files are stored in the same "Media" folder, a duplicated name (two files with the same name) would upload only the newest file (erasing the first).
Check your server and the Media folder. The file named in your linked page is:
Movement%20Study%202.mov (which translates to Movement Study 2.mov). The %20 is Web code for the spaces in the file names.

  • Help! Lost all Data!

    Problem with logging on:
Started up and window appeared asking for my user log on password. Computer seemed to recognize password but got this message: This user cannot log in at this time.
Password hint is correct, but can't log in after several tries. Call Apple Care, Steve has me try several logins, restarts holding C key, change password, etc. Nothing. Asks me if I have Fire Vault on but I can't remember. Tells me to do archive and install. I start first disc, run an errand, start disc 2. Still doesn't work.
Call Apple Care again, Shane has me try option/command/P/R, run Verify disk which shows all okay, log on as "root", etc. Then he has me log in 4 times and enter my master password. Now I can see my familiar desktop again. We check Mac HD and "Previous Folder" for my User folder but find that they are empty. He tells me all my data is lost.
After quizzing Shane to find out what caused this he mentioned that if Fire Vault is on then a different set of actions is performed or all data will be lost. Trying to log on 3 or 4 times and having it ask for the Master pw is an indication that Fire Vault is on. I entered Master pw and I was able to get to my desktop and dock, but all of the data is gone.
I have back ups for a few things--photos, some itune songs and some stuff from 2007 and prior--but everything else is gone. I know I should have it all backed up but I didn't.
I called the Apple Store and explained situation. He said, "Didn't Apple Care ask you to back up everything before you did an Archive and Install? They should have." But they didn't. I thought "Archive" meant that everything on my computer would be archived and still available.
    So, what happened?
Is there anyway to retrieve any of my lost data?
Apple Care suggested Data Recover, Lazarus, etc. but said it was $$$. I asked if reading the logs would help pinpoint what happened, Shane said I'd need a "Software Engineer" and that no one at Apple Care would be able to understand the Log gobbledeegoop.
I pointed out that if, like he said, logging on 3-4 times and entering Master pw meant that File Vault was on, did he realize that and instruct me correctly so I wouldn't lose my data. I think he said that we had checked both Mac HD and "Previous Folder" and there was only an empty user file which meant data was gone.
Was I given bad advice from Apple Care? Has anyone been able to get Apple to pay for data retrieval?
    Please help!

Ultimately, it is the user's responsibility to have a separate drive that holds a backup of important data from the internal drive. Apple's Time Machine (part of Leopard) makes it a simple +set it and forget it+ process. Other people use a cloning utility, such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to periodically make complete duplicates (clones) of their internal drive volume to an external drive. Some people even do both, to be double protected. It is unlikely, but not inconceivable, that both your internal drive and Time Machine drive would fail at exactly the same time, which is the purpose of the additional cloned backup.
You can lose your personal data on your internal drive for many reasons. The hard drive could fail. You could knock your iMac off your desk accidentally. Or your startup volume could just suffer from data corruption. With a Time Machine (or other type of) backup, it would be relatively simple to reformat your internal drive and restore the complete volume. If the internal drive had become faulty, you would have the drive replaced (under AppleCare) and then use the Time Machine backup to restore the complete volume. If the entire iMac had to be replaced due to an accident, that would not be pleasant, but you can use the Time Machine backup to restore your personal data to the replacement Mac; at least your old data would be there on the new Mac.
There are some utilities that can be used to retrieve data, as long as new data has not been written over the location of your old files on the hard drive. However, this will not work, if you had +File Vault+ turned on, because the data would have been encrypted. Here is one such utility

TechTool Pro from Micromat also has a data recovery tool.
