After 10.6 install, double-press now needed for f9, f10?

I have a MBP 2.4 GHx Intel Core 2 Duo, and finally upgraded to 10.6 (and 4GB of ram).  I used to be able to press F9 (and F10) to enable expose kfor all open windows (and all application-specific open windows).  Now when I press F9 (once) it looks like it it performs the function and immediately resets itself to the original window as if I had pressed the F9 button twice.  However, when I actually do press F9 twice, it does the quick function/reset then function again and stays on the screen.  F10 has the same problem.  Why do I need to press F9 twice in order for the function result to remain on the screen?
F11 and F12 work just fine ... no double-press needed.

Quoted from elsewhere on the web (link): See the note at the bottom as relates specifically to your query...
Short version:
In the Security pane of System Preferences, click the Advanced button in the Snow Leopard Firewall tab to get to the rest of the options found in the Leopard Firewall tab.
Longer version:
When Leopard arrived, Apple changed the interface to the Mac OS X firewall and caught a fair amount of flak as a result for the confusing way the options were offered. (It also made things worse by deciding to turn the firewall off by default.) In Snow Leopard, it has retained the application-based part of firewall services but has tried to simplify the presentation. The tab now opens with a note of whether the firewall is on or off, a Start/Stop button, and at the bottom, an Advanced button.
The Advanced button opens a sheet that present basically the same options as those found in Leopard. But Snow Leopard replaces Leopard's three confusing radio button options (Allow all incoming connections, Allow only essential services, and Set access for specific services and applications) with a single straightforward checkbox "Block all incoming connections." Below that is a scrolling list, carried over from Leopard, that shows which services have been made available (through the Sharing pane) and which specific applications have been either allowed or denied incoming access. As in Leopard, "essential services" (Bonjour, DHCP, and IPsec) are always allowed to accept incoming connections regardless of user settings, but you can now block access to File Sharing and other services.
Note: If you install Snow Leopard over an existing Leopard system, it will pick up your basic firewall settings (along with many other settings). However, if you do a clean install to a blank or erased disk, Snow Leopard will set the firewall to OFF by default, just as Leopard did.

I tried to install maverick and now my keyboard keys F10,F11, 7,8,9 on the number pad don't work on my iMac. How do I resolve this?

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • IPod setup on Mac now needed for PC with Vista

I have had my iPod setup on a Mac and now am using a PC with Vista. I installed iTunes 8.x and when I connected my iPod I was informed that it had to be reformatted for use with Windows.
This iPod is packed with music. Is there any way to salvage the content on this iPod?
    Any help greatly appreciated!

You might be able to do something with a 3rd-party ipod manager, but I suspect they are also either Mac or Windows-based, as in either/or and not "works with both". Here is a good page to start researching it.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparisonof_iPodmanagers
I would steer clear of the free ones. Also, and contact the company who sells whichever one you choose to make sure it can do what you want.
And you could see if any of your friends have a Mac, just to get the music files off the iPod and then put back on after you've Windows-formatted it.

  • Can't install a font I need for work - please help! 10.4 ={

    Hello,
So I am trying to install this font on my work computer, which is old and has os x 10.4.11 (tiger?). I have downloaded the TTF file onto the desktop. When I double click to install it, it says I need to choose an application and none of them I tried will work. I have a brand new macbook myself and downloaded the same font - worked fine because I could put it right into font book.
The problem here is that I cannot find font book anywhere on this computer and have not found any helpful discussions on how to re-install it or about different ways to get this font downloaded and usable. I have tried everything I can think of. I would just make these damned brochures on my own computer, but then they won't convert to this one.
Anyways, super frustrated - any advice/places to get font book/or something else I could use would really help. I don't even care if it's a round-about way of doing it, I just NEED this font!!
    Thanks ahead of time!

    Is the font compatible w/Tiger?
The Font Book is inside the Applications folder.  If it is not there, use Spotlight to search for it.  If Spotlight cannot find it, you can custom install Font Book directly from the system DVD that originally came w/your MBP. Use the custom install option.  It should be inside the Bundled Software folder.  If not, there, it will be inside the Applications folder.

  • I just created a new AppleID account for school and it won't allow me to review my account for iTunes. Which has led me to be unable to install the apps I need for school

I have an iPad Air given to me by my high school. I just created an AppleID account for school usage, but every time I try to install apps a little pop-up comes up. The pop-up tells me to log into my AppleID account and then takes me to iTunes. Since my AppleID account is brand new, my account has not been logged into iTunes before. Another pop-up shows up telling me to "review" my account (asking me to agree to the iTunes/App Store agreement, entering my address, credit card info, billing information). I enter everything but the credit card information because since this is my school iPad I will not be purchasing anything so I clicked none for payment. No matter how many times I complete this form, I can not get pass it and a red sentece comes up telling me to contact iTunes support for assistance.

Have you done as the message tells you and contacted iTunes Support ? If not (these are user-to-user forums) :
    - go to http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ww
    - click on your country's flag
    - click on the Contact Support at the bottom of the left-hand column
    - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page
    - then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

  • Recover mail after archive and install

    Hey there good mac people,
I recently archived and installed on my ibook g4. It was successful, my problem is that I forgot to backup all the mail I had in my osx mail app.
The previous system folder (library<mail<mail accounts<com.mac.mailaccounts<English.lproj< file, but I don't know if this will help restore or not?
Some of the mail is still on the server, but it is set to delete from the server once a week, and thus only a weeks worth at best is still on the server.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?
In the future, what's the best way to back up mail?

    Hello art-is-work.
I don't understand your problem. Archive and Install should have preserved all your data, unless you told it to do otherwise. Did you?
Mail stores most preferences and all account settings in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. Everything else, including all your messages and mailboxes, is stored within the ~/Library/Mail/ folder.
If the problem is that you told the installer to not Preserve Users and Network Settings, then Archive and Install should still have saved a copy of your entire home folder in /Previous Systems/Previous System N/Users/, where N is a number. The old Mail folder and preferences file should be there. You can just copy them to the appropriate location of your current home folder, or follow the somewhat convoluted procedure described in the following article to safely restore them:
How to get files from a previous home directory after Archive and Install (Mac OS X)
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder.

  • After installing 8.2 on my iPad all the apps crash during use. It appears that the iPad saves a version of what I was using because after the app crashes I double press the home button an there is a screen of an older version of the page I was using.

After installing 8.2 on my iPad (2nd gen) all the apps crash during use. It appears that the iPad saves a version of what I was using because after the app crashes I double press the home button an there is a screen of an older version of the page I was using. I swipe it away and start over, only to have the same thing happen again. I have reinstalled all the apps, rebooted, synced and re-synced with iTunes. This is VERY irritating!

That's one of the weird things.. it recognizes it maybe 10% of the time. And usually, only after I do the two-button reset. Problem is.. since it won't charge above 2%, anytime I try to do a restore or anything like that using iTunes, my device shuts off and I lose whatever progress I'd made.
So, an update... after reading through a bunch of similar complaints (there are literally 1000's of them so there's NO WAY this isn't somehow ios7 related, thanks a lot APPLE ) I decided to try a restore in recovery mode. After 3 hours and several disconnections... I ended up having to just set it up as a new iPad, as the restore did nothing. Weirdly though... as I was doing the restore in recovery mode.. I noticed I'd gotten up to a 10% charge.. higher than it's been since September, so after setting it up as a new device, I turned it off and plugged it in using the wall charger. 2 hours later and I was up to 38%. Still not great, as my iPad, before ios7 could've fully charged twice in the amount of time it took for me to now get 28% more of a charge. And that's with a fully cleaned out device.. so that really ***** and I'm now more confused than ever.
But I'm gonna leave it overnight charging and see what I come up with tomorrow. Sadly, when I paid $600 for it in February, I never expected to have to play "wait and see" with it...

I purchased and downloaded Lightroom 5.5. After installing it, I was prompted for the serial number. When I entered it an error message appeared saying it was an upgrade serial number and I need to enter my original purchase number. This was my original purchase, not an upgrade. Now what do I do?

It sounds like you bought an upgrade from Adobe. How much did you pay? The upgrade is about $80, and the non-upgrade is about $150. If you bought an upgrade version and had no previous version, you would see what you're seeing.
If that is the case and I were you, I'd call Adobe, and arrange for a refund and to order the correct version.

  • Installed Mavericks and now my system partition needs repair

    Hi All,
I upgraded to Mavericks yesterday, but after the install my MBP's performance/responsiveness was substantially degraded.
Today (after reading posts from users experiencing similar issues on the forum) I ran disk utility. After verifying the disk, the utility told me there was a problem with my system partition, and that I would need to run disk utility from recovery mode (cmd + r).
I did so, and when I verify the disk from recovery it returns: "The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partition's file system". When I attempt to repair the partition, I receive an alert that: "Live file system repair is not supported".
Now I can't even boot into the log-in page, and the only area I can access (aside from the blank grey screen with a picture of a folder on it) is the recovery mode. I would really like to avoid re-installing Lion from recovery mode and losing all my programs, settings, etc. Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

My two cents: I upgraded to Mavericks and found the EFI corruption error when verifying permissions immediately afterward. Tried the install a couple of times to make sure it wasn't a fluke. I was unsure how to get Lion back on the laptop, as the Mavericks istaller had updated my HD Recovery to 10.9, and my back up was manually done; I wanted a truly clean install without using migration assistant or Time Machine.
However, by completley erasing my hard drive and doing internet recovery, Lion was available. I'm back in business with a clean install of Lion and won't be trying Mavericks again anytime soon.
Incidently, my OS volume was okay and I could use the computer. As far as I could tell, only the EFI partition was corrupted. Not sure of the long term effects of that, but assume I wouldn't be able to accept firmware updates in the future at the very least, and who knows what else might develop, as several of the other posters here are experiencing. Feel like I got off relatively lucky.
I mostly wanted to point out that the machine's original OS recovery should be available via internet recovery, even after the Mavericks install has removed that option from the HD recovery.

#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

Attempt to install Mountain Lion has highlighted need for internal disk repair. Even after "repair" ML still says disk is damaged. Attempt to restore from Time Machine back-up failed - cannot 'see' internal HD to restore to. Help! Has attempt to install ML caused these problems or just highlighted existing need to Repair Disk? Even so, why can back-up from Time Machine not see the internal drive to restore to?

Csound1, William & Sig .... thanks for taking the trouble to reply. I fear you are right - I'll need a new disk. I'm booked in at the Apple Genius Bar in Bordeaux, France on Wed ... quite a challenge as my French isn't great! The current internal disk is 500gb, does anyone know whether I can upgrade my 21.5" iMac (circa Oct-2009 vintage) to a larger size internal disk, 1Tb or even 2Tb? I already have one external 2Tb drive and another one on order (I have masses of media stored and more planned as I've just taken up photography). Seems a bit of a pain managing with only 500gb internal storage. OR, can you advise me on how I can store all my photos on my new 2Tb external drive - I can't seem to figure out how to set the path for iPhoto to see them (I can't even figure out where they are stored right now!). Same with iTunes, how do I set the default storage to the external drive (I moved everything manually and then imported them all from the new drive - it worked but seemed very convoluted). Any advice on how to manage multiple drives gratefully received. And thanks again for previous replies.
