After download of Mav, MS Word for Office for Mac 2011 comes up blank.

After download of Mav, MS Word for Office for Mac 2011 comes up blank. Other MS Office apps work fine. When restarting iMac in Safe mode, Word opens OK. Apple support rep says, "Not our problem; it's Microsoft's. There are no Microsoft experts here." But it was Maverick that knocked Word out. (Note: the "not our problem" quote is from the third contact with Apple support. The first two support techs tried to resolve the problem, were very accommodating, and tried their best to solve the issue.)
On another note, I use a Microsoft wireless keyboard, with push-button shortcuts to mail, Safari, etc. The keyboard Command + keystroke shortcuts no longer work, and in the System Preferences file the message tells me it can't access them.
Any suggestions, especially for the former problem, would be appreciated.

Thanks; this last reply came closest to 'solving' the issue. While I selected font sub, it at first had no affect on the document.
I then went back to prefs and set the compatability dropdown from 'Custom' (where it had defaulted) to 'Word 2004-2007', assuming these docs were created from a recent past Windows.
I 'Saved As' a Word for Mac " .docm "
Whoa... the extensions mean something. Your original problem (document shows bold, italic, underline, but tables and other complex formatting are lost) sounds as though the document was being exported as a .RTF, a Rich Text Format file. If you save as a .DOCM, that's a Word Macro Enabled Document. Regular Word 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011 docs are .DOCX. Regular Word 97 through 2004 docs are .DOC. You need to save that document as a .DOCX or a .DOC or you're gonna have problems later.
- and the documents appear normal (though I had to switch one to 'Portrait' as it for some reason wanted to display in landsacpe.
Normally you'd have to select page orientation.
So, poor testing on my part. I have no idea which of the above steps fixed it but I'm guessing the 'Save As' to my version of Word.
If so, it would appear the 'Compatability' feature was not working at least on these two documents.
Word's compatibility feature is supposed to ensure that a document you produce is compatible with the target version of Word. If you turn the compatibility stuff on then you will be warned if you are using Word 2007 through 2011 and you use a feature that earlier versions of Word do not have. Microsoft shipped a translator which works with Office 2003 and 2004 and which allows Word 2003 or 2004 to read Word 2007, 2008, 2010, or 2011 documents (.DOCX) and to save them as Word 97 through 2004 documents (.DOC) _as long as they don't have any incompatible features_. Word's compatibility features doesn't do much for .RTFs or for .DOCMs.

    Hi Anne,
Did you do this through one of the Office app updates, or did you download it directly from the Microsoft website?
Whichever way you tried it, I would try it the opposite way this time, although simply repeating what you did before may also work.

    Hi shelbyrn,
The quality of a conversion really depends on the quality of the original PDF file. Please see Will Adobe ExportPDF convert both text and form... | Adobe Community.  Do you know what or how the PDF file was created?
You may have better luck by disabling OCR as described in this document: How to disable Optical Character Recognition (O... | Adobe Community. Cannot upgrade serial number after download. 'This serial number is not for a qualifying product'. Trying to upgrade from ACS 5.5 Design Premium to ACS 6 Design Standard

start the installation of design premium cs5.5 just to make sure you're using the correct serial number.  once your serial number is accepted you'll see a screen giving you the option to install none, some or all of the cs5.5 programs.  at that point you can quit and not install anything having verified your cs5.5 serial number if you want nothing cs5.5 on your computer.
on the other hand, if your cs5.5 serial number is not accepted, you'll pinpoint the problem.
or, if your cs5.5 number is accepted, you could install a cs5.5 program and then install cs6.  it should recognize you have a cs5.5 program installed and NOT prompt you for you cs5.5 serial number allowing you to continue with your cs6 installation.

Is there a free app I can download that is a (Word) Document on my Mac?

As far as I know, any free word processing apps would be no where near as good as opposed to just purchasing iWork (Apple's version of Word) or Microsoft Office for Mac. It's definitely worth the price to buy one of these if your planning on using it a lot.

I recommend the FREE and very capable LibreOffice if people don't specifically need Office.
    http://www.libreoffice.org/
Runs on OS X, Windows and Linux. Reads/writes Office files too.
Office is only for those who trade editable files with other (enslaved) Office users.
If you need office software just for yourself, why pay?
If you need to send a LibreOffice file to another, just pack a copy of Libreoffice along for the ride, it's free.
Why put up with Office DRM scheme headaches?
Why put up with numerous "security" issues that have plagued Mac users with Office over the years?
Enough is enough, dump Microsoft completely and don't let them sucker you back into their "Stockholm Syndrome Effect" or make you feel sorry for them.
Office software should be free anyway now, god knows they can't improve it anymore.

  • Using WORD from Office for Mac

Before I invested in my MacPro, I used Microsoft Office on my PC. One of the sections in Microsoft Office allowed me to design, include photos and greetings. It then allowed me to print off the results of my labour. Then I could fold the A4 paper/card and the complete card was produced.
I have Office for Mac, but there is nowhere that I can see, enabling me to do this. I have iPHOTO installed and had hoped to use the photos etc. from there, to design and print off my cards. All I can find is to order cards with my photos, from Mac ..... at a cost. Can someone help me here, please? I am no expert on my Mac, but if anyone can answer in simple terms, I would be grateful. First of all, a MacPro is not a MacBook Pro. If you have the MacBook Pro, you're in the right place.
I honestly don't think this is the best forum for asking questions about a non-Apple software product. I'll bet many, if not most, of the users here don't use MS Word anymore. But that's a guess. However, in MS Word for the Mac, you go to File>Project Gallery and find something that works for you. I don't know if MS adds greeting cards to the gallery, but it's really easy to add to the gallery by downloading stuff from the MS website. And I'm almost certain that Windows gallery items are compatible with the Mac version, but don't quote me on that.
When you download the office templates, add them to user (that would be your home directory)>Library>Application Support>Microsoft>Office>User Templates>My Templates.
And iPhoto is not capable of making greeting cards, although there are programs out there that do. iPhoto is really a photo organizational tool with limited editing.

The terminology SP1 is a bit confusing. SP1 and such is mostly used with Win Office products. The latest update for Office 2008 is
"Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.4 Update
This update fixes a calendar issue in versions of Microsoft Entourage that were updated with the Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.3 Update. The issue prevents Exchange accounts in Entourage from sending meeting invitations and responses. This issue can occur when an Entourage identity is configured with more than one mail account. We strongly recommend that all Entourage users who installed Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.3 Update install this update."
and all updates have been named 12.M.N, M=0 or 1, N =4 in this case.
The update above, and earlier ones -- and updates for Office 2004 -- can all be found here for download:
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx
Is this what you are trying to install? I did this update on my Al MB recently and it went fine.

  • Need workflow for Advanced Analysis for Office for Sizing

    Hi,
I am in the process of sizing for BO solution .
Part of that exercise is to find out how much cpu and memory are required for AAO?
So i thought trace the AAO workflow and understand which BO services/servers it requires.
If anyone any idea about it workflow, please share.
    Thanks,
    Srikar

    Hi Srikar,
Analysis for office goes directly to SAP BW / SAP HANA for data retrieval, so there is no need to consider it as part of your sizing exercise.
There is a note though about client Hardware and Software requirements:
1466118 - Hardware & Software requirements for Advanced Analysis
The only exception here is the new scheduling capability of Analysis for Office in the BI Platform, in that case the Adaptive Job Server is used.
    Best regards,
