I am not sure any Mac every had a sound for plugging/unplugging USB devices.
You may be right. It's only on Windows that the sound is created and heard.
I know that since Tiger on this MBP, when I plug in my external scanner, I never heard anything.
And plugging in my Blu-Ray recorder also does not make any sounds.
I cannot speak for anything but my Mac laptops, however. Desktop Macs might make a sound.

After upgrading to Lion , itunes does not recognize my ipad, ipod touch anymore.
Yesterday I updated to Mac OSC Lion on my original Intel Macbook (the first Aluminum Macbook) with 4GB RAM.
Today I had a run in with my ipad and ipod touch, both of whom are not being recognized by itunes anymore.
My ipod shuffle and classic are still being recognised and do sync.
I have read through the support pages and annoyingly even factory-reset my ipad, which cannot be used anymore due
to itunes not recognizing the device !
System profiler does show either ipod or ipad being connected to the usb port. Resetting of the devices did not help (see above)
Any clues to this inconsistent behaviour differentiating between classic ipods and ipod touch/ipad ?
js.update: It seems like the XCode update did interfere with itunes. I reran the XCode install this time with itunes not running. This seems to update all necessary drivers and Library items correctly.
After this IPad and IPod touch were working fine again. -

Hi, probably this question has been asked somewhere, but I can't find it. Given that after upgrading to Leopard and the combo, my iPod is seen in iTunes, but my iPod Touch does not show up in iTunes. The answer seems to be to reinstall iTunes, if I do that, will the reinstall keep my fine iTunes music library? thanks, e_moma
Most people in this situation seem to have to re-install iTunes. iTunes the application resides in the Applications folder. Your music resides in ~/Music/iTunes/ and will not be affected by re-installing the application.
Of course you have a good back-up on an external drive anyway - right(?)

I have a similar problem with the iPhone. Tried everything you can think of and then some. There is apparently some devastating bug 7.6 introduced into normal USB device recognition. I've been able to force the phone into recovery mode; the boot recovery USB driver does still work. Restoring the phone every time I need to sync is both scary and time-consuming.

After installing an app on iPhone 5s, I can't use it outside of wifi (using cellular or mobile data) and the app is not listed in settings to enable its use of mobile data - any clues on what is wrong here?
Steps to take to resolve this issue:
1/ Turn off Wifi
2/ Ensure Mobile (cellular) data is on
3/ Turn iPhone OFF and then ON (re-boot iPhone)
4/ Without turning Wifi on, open an app that requires mobile (cellular) data.
5/ The app will now show on the Settings list with the option to enable or disable mobile (cellular) data
6/ In time all apps that require or use mobile data will be added to the list automatically. -

Yes, I have the latest version of iTunes for Windows. And when I go into Preferences, it still lists my iPhone as a device back-up, and the date of the last back-up.
What can I do to fix this?If your iTunes is the latest version, restart your computer and reboot your iPhone. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the iPhone restart. See if that fixes your problem.

I have a desktop mac operating on Mac OSx 10.4.11 and the system does not recognize my iphone and I am unable to upgrade to the newest itunes version. What do I need to do?
Backup first
It is always best to have a full bootable backup before you upgrade. If you fail to do this you will be unable to return to this OS if you decide you don't like the new OS. Also there is a slight chance that an install could lose everything on the Mac. The backup must be to an external hard disk. Preferably use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup of the whole disk.
Erase before the install
Once you have a bootable backup on an external disk it is best to erase the internal disk with the new installer DVD before you install.
During the install
Preferably do not import any data or preferences from earlier OSs during the install process as this can reintroduce bugs.

OSs beyond OS X 10.5.8 require an Intel processor. If in doubt check this: Click the apple at the top left of your screen and select 'About this Mac'. This will give you your OS number. Then click 'More Info' to see which processor you have. If it says PowerPC you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard and above. I updated to iTunes 10.7 and now iTunes does not see my iPod touch. After the update I got a message that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver could not be installed. I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes 3 times, but still cannot fix the problem. I have followed the suggested fixes in Apple Support. Any suggestions? Thanks!

My computer has Bitlocker encryption. When I plug in my iPod Shuffle to the USB port, iTunes does not recognize it. When asked to encrpt the Shuffle I say no, but still not recognized. When I encrypt it, still not recognized (even after it was restored by iTunes). Any suggestions please?

TOMYou shouldn't be running the "preview" anymore. Microsoft released the full 8.1 update last Friday (10/18).
The "preview" is a beta and should NOT be relied on for any further use. Microsoft explained this in their "preview" downloads.

ITunes does not recognize password after removal of corrupt backup file
I removed a corrupt backup file of my iPhone 4 from iTunes and now it does not recognize my password anymore. The password is correct, as I wrote it down when I set it up and have used it before. Any thoughts? This must be some kind of flaw in iTunes or iOS for iPhone.
iPhone 4, iOS 6.1.3Thanks for the suggestion. I tried stopping and restarting Apple Mobile Services, Bonjour and iPod services but it had no effect. The problem still remains - everything works for all 3 iPhones immediately after reinstalling iTunes but none of them can connect with any of the USB cables after a reboot. This problem is still present as of upgrading to 10.6.3.25.
BTW, I do have other choices. I can become disenchanted with the product, use it less and less, then eventually migrate over to some competitor's product.
