After replacing HDD system unstable troubleshooting advice?

Hi,
I just replaced my HD with the following process.
Full copy to new dri on usb enclosure with superduper.
swap drives and system comes up fine.
After a day or so now its unstable. While browsing the net suddely everything restarts almost like finder restarts. but in this case it takes all the running programs and services with it. it recovers but almost all the services in the upper bar has vanished.   a reboot restores fine until it dies again.
I have run onyx and run everything and resored permissions also run repair via diskmanager.
I keep looking for any tools to help me troubleshoot this. Where would the logs be?
What to do? reinstall from scratch? the copy stuff in from old disk that is still intact.  i dont want to do that since i dont know if i have all the media anymore to my software.

First, you don't have a Recovery partition on the boot drive, which you should have. If your model is capable of it, boot into Internet Recovery and reinstall OS X.
Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery
If you still have the problem after reinstalling, proceed as below.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

    Dear chong2010,
what you are experiencing is not unheard of, part of the counterfeit protection on the MS OS involves taking note of certain aspects of the Hardware, including the hard drive, so changing the drive is VERY likely to trigger this reaction on part of
    the OS.
All you need to do is to perform the validation process again, as you did when you initially installed the box (or initially used the box, if pre installed by manufacturer), using the same original windows key (you should have it in a label attached to the
box of the computer of in the supporting documentation of the purchase).
You can do this from "control panel" -> 'system security" -> "system" or by typing "
    cscript slmgr.vbs /ato
in the command line (admin privs required in this command line)
    Best Regards / Saludos, Marianok

Hello, I have clone the Mac Mini HDD with disk utility, and boot up the server, and now the iCal Server is not working, it's shows as started, but the calendar on iCal client is empty. What can I do?

Ok, solution was: Upgrade to Lion, that was the plan anyway.

  • SW failures after replacing T510 HDD and re-installing software from Lenovo Recovery Disks

    Please help...
I have replaced the 320GB SATA drive in my T510 after the original one started to fail. But the resinstalled software (taken from the recovery partition on the old drive) hs problems.
I used the Lenovo Recovery Partition on the old drive to create a bootable Flash Drive in order to re-install to the new drive. It initially appeared that the recovery drive successfully reinstated Windows 7 and associated programs on the brand new (also Seagate 320GB SATA drive).
All was good, I thought - Until I tried Windows Update
Other things are not working well either - e.g. YouTube clips are not playing, IE is working very slowly to name but two.
Windows update fails with the message "Windows Update Cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer".
I have discovered on MS web site that there are fixes for this but the fixes I have tried do not work.
The fixes all seem to look for and check that BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) and Windows Update Srervices are running. I have checked and both services ARE runing but still I get the failure message.
    When running the Microsoft Fix:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2730071
further errors are discovered stating that "troubleshooting was unable to fix all of the issues found.
"Problems installing recent updates - not fixed"
I have serached high and low and the only stuff I can find to fix windows update does not work.
If the replacement HDD was brand new.
Could it be that a BIOS update that took place at some point during the last year or two plus the recovery partition are somehow incompatible.
Could it be that the recovery partition has created an unusable version?
Advice on where to go next will be well received..

  • [NB] X4200 RAID1 question - steps after replacing a HDD?

    Hi,
I got an X4200 machine with LSI RAID controller, 2 HDD, configured as RAID1.
Question - after replacing a HDD, do I need to do anything for the data to be sunched on the new HDD, or is that automatic?
    TIA,
P.S - looking at doc 819-1157-21 (Sun Fire x4200 service manual) sections E.4.1.1 & E.4.7 makes me more confused instead of answering my question...
Edited by: ranshe on Jan 13, 2009 4:54 PM

Found it - http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4933-13 chapter 2, hot swapping - "The firmware supports hot swapping. The hot-swapped disk is automatically re-synchronized in the background, without any host or user intervention. The firmware detects hot swap removal and disk insertion. Following a hot swap event, the firmware readies the new physical disk by spinning it up and verifying that it has enough capacity for the mirrored volume. The firmware re-synchronizes all hot-swapped disks that have been removed, even if the
same disk is re-inserted. In a two-disk mirrored volume, the firmware marks the hot-swapped disk as the secondary disk and marks the other mirrored disk as the
primary disk. The firmware re-synchronizes all data from the primary disk onto the new secondary disk."

  • IMac won't boot after replacing hard drive and restoring from Time Machine

I was having problems with my iMac but upgraded to Lion when it came out. Had a few good days and then my hard drive died.
I had the drive replaced and the repair people put Snow Leopard on the new drive.
I then tried to restore everything from my Time Machine backup. At first when I tried to log on the computer wouldn't accept my password (i know it was right).
I decided to reinstall again using the snow leopard dvd i had. This time, the computer booted up (didn't ask me for a passord) and looked like it was in the process of setting things up. But Mail kept saying it was going to import messages but then quit and restarted a few seconds later. When i quit it it just came back again and again. I could see Chrome open behind it with my bookmarks in the toolbar and see other restored things, but the overall look was grey and not everything was there.
When i restarted from the HD and not the dvd i could never get past various shades of grey and the circling progress indicator. Never booted up at all.
I read about Lion having some restore hd functionality but it doesn't show up when i restart with option key. Am I in limbo between operating systems?
Any advice as to steps to take? I don't know much about this stuff.
    Thanks for any help.

Yes, if you picked a Snow Leopard backup, that's what you got.
You could pick a Lion backup, and it would restore it, but that wouldn't create the Recovery HD, which you will need, sooner or later.  See Using the Recovery HD.  You'll need to re-download Lion for that to be created.
When you do that, after downloading but before installing Lion again, you might want to do this: Making a Lion Install disc or partition.  Then if you need to reinstall Lion again, you can do it from that, instead of having to download it again.

  • My late 2009 macbook stopped booting up after swapping hdd's with a macbook of the same model with a newer OS what happened did I somehow update my older Mac hardware with newer OS software because it won't recognize the original hdd anymore

I swapped hdd's with two diff os's and now I'm getting the question mark in the folder icon after replacing the two to their original MacBooks but they work while swapped I realized afterwards that I wanted to use the newer OS in my external enclosure and keep the older hdd in the macbook it was in from the start ive reset pram tried to boot to the menus or what have you by following the step in these forums but my macbook isn't even recognizing the original hdd that came in the macbook

Try booting to the Startup Manager and select your system drive.
Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1310
    Then see
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5282
Will it boot the disk when it is in an external enclosure but not when it is intsalled internaly?  If so it may be the internal SATA cable that is bad (an inexpensive part).

  • Mail stopped working after replacing primary HD

Apple Mail stopped working after replacing and restoring the Main Hard Drive in the upper bay.  Internet connection is good, and the Mail client troubleshooting (Comcast) was no help.  I can start the App, but it does not retrieve or send mail through Comcast anymore.  I have a MacBook Pro with the same settings and Mail works fine.

    Thanks for replying.
This is odd because my PowerMac G5 with Leopard Mail cannot receive or send email.  Connection doctor is showing all red dots on every email account with Comcast (BTW, GMAIL accounts okay).  On my Blackberry, and my MacBook Pro (Lion), the setting are all the same, passwords, etc., and the later two have no issues.  I even created a test Administrator Account in "Accounts" in System Preferences on the G5, logged into the Test Account and tried to create a new mail account with the same settings, and yet during the set-up (Welcome to Mail), I get an error message that says Mail cannot log into Comcast's POP server with the current settings.  I have also tried changing passwords, no help. Also the usual disk repair, permissions,  motherboard resets, zapping PRAM, etc.
    Out of ideas...
    Thanks for any help...

FIXED THE ISSUE....    This took a little time, but it was a simple fix.  The LCD sensor that you have to disconnect from before removing the LCD was the issue.  After receiving HIGH CPU fan speeds, I began looking at possible issues.  First, I had [http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/12381/temperature-monitor|Temperature Monitor] Installed.  I had all my sensors including the ambient air sensor reading.  After I upgraded my HD to a SSD I started getting HIGH CPU fan speeds, but the HD and DVD fan speeds were fine.  I looked at my Temperature Monitor and I noticed i had several Temperature Monitors not reading including the ambient Air Temperature (bare with me, these are steps to troubleshoot).  After reseting the SMC and PRAM, still nothing.  I shut down and disassembled  my IMAC again.  This time after i removed the LCD, I looked at the LCD cable that you must disconnect when removing the LCD and BAM, I saw the issue.  The wires that connect to the Motherboard from the LCD Sensor, inherently like to lay across the screw hole the Bezel attaches to.  I have a couple of pinched marked that exposed the wires and when I tighten the bezel down, it shorted the wires and caused the issue.  I cut small pieces of electrical tape and covered the bare spots.  When I reassembled the IMAC, i made sure that all my BEZEL screw holes were completely clear of any wires.  Once back together, I plugged in the IMAC, waited 5 Seconds and turned it on.  All is well.  I feel this a majority of everyones issues when they take apart their IMACS and put them back together.  THe Fan Control SOftware is good, but this was my solution that worked.  Hope this helps.

  • Replace HDD problem

I have Mac Book, Model Identifier: MacBook7,1. Recently bad sectors developed on 120G Toshiba HDD. I get new Samsung 320G HDD, tried to replace it... but problems started:
I tried to clone the disk, but because of bad sectors, it was unsuccessful.
I decide to do new MacOS installation. After booting (with OPTION key), and choosing to boot from CD (and USB), in both cases I get "screen of death".
My friend have one generation older Mac Book (6.1), and yesterday he has replaced his HDD with SSD disk (about this later). We put the disk into his MacBook, and install MacOS successfully.
Also, we've tried to use his old (original) MacBook HDD (with already installed MacOS), but it wouldn't start. We've also tried to start new installation, but always we get "screen of death".
We realize that there is some kind of protection (I am not sure, but I think it is EFI... or something like that).
He had replaced HDD successfully, because a long time ago, he done something in order to reinstall his MacOS.
Any hint how to rid off the protection?

    Screen of death:
    Obviously you haven't read carefully.
There are 2 MacBooks. On the first one I can not boot from DVD nor bootable USB... I have option to boot from DVD/USB, but after few seconds I get "the message to restart the computer". I do not have that problem on the another computers... So, please spare me of this kind of advices.

  • After replacement of my hard drive iPhoto is no longer compatible with my lion software - why ?

after replacement of my hard drive iPhoto is no longer compatible with my lion software - why ?
any suggestions on how to fix this ?

what version of iPhoto are you using? i can't begin to answer that - it is no longer listed in my applications & has only a shadow of its icon in the dock
what version did you have before the drive replacement? same answer
what system version are you running? 10.8.5 - the one i was using when the hard drive died
what exactly do you see when iPhoto attempts to launch? -it doesn't attempt to launch - i get a message saying "You can’t use this version of the application “iPhoto” with this version of OS X. You have  OS X 10.8.5. The application requires OS X 10.9 or later".
what have you tried? wringing my hands ! i daren't try anything after the hard drive crash
where is your library located? there is an iPhoto library folder on my desktop with random photos & albums - not all - put there by me - i vaguely remember a problem with iPhoto when i upgraded from snow leopard
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring? after the drive replacement i uploaded saved data from a week old back up and found iphoto looking somewhat sick - no updates were offered in software updates
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library? i'm afraid i do not know what that means
what type of Mac? a macbook pro
how much free space on your boot drive? about 380 GB
thank you very much for your questions - i hope i find some answers

  • How do I restore my backup (.wim files) after running HP System recovery on a G62 with windows 7

I had to do a system restore after getting a blue screen and I backed up the files on my external drive. after restoring the system I tried to restore my files from my external with Recovery manager but it didn't see my external so I couldn't restore. I copied and pasted the backup folder on my g62 desktop and tried again with no results. As far as I can tell the restore was done because my free space on the g 62 decreased by the same size as the backup, but when I open the c:\ drive I can't see the transfer. these are .wim files and I even tried to call tech service (my warranty juse expired) and they were trying to sell me extended warranty for the next year to help me. the problem exist with HP if they had good programs that follow up what it was meant to do maybe Today I wouldn't be here looking for help. when I restored the system, recovery told me the it would install my backup, but nothing happened leaving me hanging.NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you call AppleCare they will be more than willing to help you. Use the appropriate phone number on this page. Tell them you need a support related fulfillment - replacement disks. As shldr says there will be a small charge, but you will be able to install your system again.
    Best of luck.

  • Getting "replace hard disk error (#10008)" even after replacing hard disk

    Hi!
My laptop- HP Pavillion dv 6502- is 4 years old.
Recently, the hard disk supposedly crashed as I was not able to get anything other than a blank screen. I checked with BIOS diagnostics, and it showed error #10008- Replace Hard disk.
So, I went to an hp service centre and got the hard disk replaced.
My earlier hard drive was a Seagate 160 gb momentus 5400.3 disk.
New one is the Seagate 250 gb disk.
The laptop was working properly the day the hard disk was replaced. BIOS diagnostic status for the disk was "Passed"
But, the very next day when i tried starting the system, I got a blank screen again. I again went to BIOS and ran the diagnostic test. I performed the test twice. It took a lot of time to finish- jumping from Reaching till '80% complete', then jumping back to '10% complete', then '90% complete', then '10% complete', and so on.. finally showing '100% complete' and status : #10008 - Replace hard disk - both the times.
Then, I had to go out of station and so, I didn't touch my laptop for 2 days. When i came back, the computer was working fine and the BIOS test status said "Passed" for the disk
What could be the problem due to which my problem wasn't starting earlier- even after replacement of disk? Is it possible that the disk was not the problem in the first place?

    Hi!
Turned out the second new Hard disk was also not fine. I went back to the service centre and got the hard disk replaced again. This time the laptop has been working fine.
