After replacing my hard drive, my iTunes won't transfer music to and from my iPhone 5?

Hi,
I recently got my hard drive replaced after it died on me. I went to transfer songs onto my computer but it said I needed to update both my iTunes and my iPhone first. So I have and it says that it synced up all ok, but none of the songs got transferred. Simply dragging music over from my iPhone to iTunes didn't work so I manually tried to sync the music, but it came up with the message that in order to do this I'd have to erase all my music from my iPhone to sync with iTunes, when I would rather it be the other way around.
From reading forums, I understand that you are only allowed to sync the iPhone with one computer only and I have come to the conclusion that my iPhone still thinks it's paired with the iTunes that's on the broken hard drive and therefore thinks I'm trying to sync with another computer. However, I'm still using the same apple ID so I don't understand how that can be possible, so I am quite confused really.
All I want is to have all my old songs back in my iTunes. The only other thing I can think of is the Yosemite upgrade. I am not convinced on the upgrade since there are mixed posts about it and the only good comments are about its looks when I'm more concerned about its practicality. Could this be the problem with my iTunes? Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, what you have described is normal with iTunes and iOS devices when changing Macs or (and as you discovered) hard drives. I think you get around this problem though if you rebuild your Mac from a Time Machine backup.
Question: how much of your music is ripped from CDs or downloaded or purchased from iTunes?
I would imagine you are going to have to erase your phone, but there are 2 possible options as I would see it:
Copy the music from an old Time Machine backup. Even if Time Machine is based on your old system, as long as it’s not encrypted, an Administrator account should still be able to access the TM folder (perhaps with some tweaks to folder permissions).
Get hold of a dedicated piece of software for copying music off your iPhone. Google will present you a few options, although be careful: music on your phone is not stored in a filename friendly way, so you will no way of easily identifying the song or getting iTunes to recognise it either. You probably want software that builds filenames and copies the metadata with it, although these aren’t generally free.
Don’t forget that any purchased songs you can re-download off iTunes.

  • ITunes won't transfer unspecified purchased items from my iPhone

I tried to upgrade my iPhone 3GS to iOS 4 but got the "There are purchased items on your iPhone that have not been transferred to your computer" message. Ok, right click on my iPhone and select "Transfer Purchases" from the popup menu. Done VERY quickly; upgrade again says "There are purchased items ..."
Went to iTunes' File menu and selected "Transfer Purchases from iPhone." Still no joy.
Restart iTunes, rebooted the iPhone, took the dog for a walk, it STILL isn't happy.
I've only used one account to make purchases from the iTunes Store (and App Store). At least some items purchased on my iPhone show up in iTunes, and the contents of the "Purchased on ... iPhone" playlist in iTunes appears to be complete. All apps are present and accounted for in iTunes, including a few that I've purchased on the iPhone.
If there is a list of items that iTunes thinks have not been transferred then it's very well hidden—beyond iTunes, I rummaged about using Console and even poked around in a shell.
Now what? I'd like to upgrade to iOS 4 but I'd also like not to lose any files.

Having the exact same issue. I went a ahead with the os4 update and my purchases are still on my iphone, but still cannot transfer purchases to my authorised computer. I should warn you that the I got an extra bonus with the OS4 upgrade ... my iphone no longer connects to wireless networks.

After replacing the hard drive on my G4 Powerbook and reinstalling Tiger I am no longer able to synch between itunes and my ipod (Classic 160gb) it would seem that the software on the ipod is of later date than itunes and I am unable to update itunes to the state prior to the original harddrive's failure for Tiger OSX 10.4.11
Any ideas on the subject would be most helpful

The last security update released for Tiger users was the 2009-005 update. The latest version of QuickTime is 7.6.4. The last version of iTunes that can run on Tiger is 9.2.1, because 10.0 only supports Mac OS X Leopard and later.
So, are you on version 9.2.1?
Was it Tiger or Leopard you had on the drive before?

Assuming there is no hardware problem try reinstalling Yosemite. If this does not work then take it back to the Apple Store.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.

  • How do I authorise my Imac for Itunes after replacing the hard drive?

    Dear All,
Apologies, but I am new to forums and understand that the issue of "Authorisation" of Itunes purchases and rentals has been done to death!  However, I have tried everything and have exhausted normal research on the Net, there doesnt seem to be standard sollution to my problem.   I have replaced the Hard Drive in my Imac 2008 with an SSD which makes the Imac very fast and effcient and completely clean of the usual trash in an old computer. So before renting my first movie, I did the following:..................................
Formatted the hard drive and downloaded and upgraded to OSX to 10.5.8 (the latest I can go on this Imac (I think) Intel 3.06Ghz 2 core and 4GB SSDRAM)
Upgraded Itunes to the latest available
Upgraded Quicktime to the latest available.
I rented a film which will not play and initially I got the "not authorised on this computer" message which kept repeating despite saying it was "waiting"
So I did the usual apple support search and tried the following:..................................
I checked that my apple User ID and password where up to date and that I was purchasing on the right ID
Tried the standard.....Itunes/Store/Authorise this computer  -  tried unauthorising and then re-authorising No luck
I tried deleting the  (/Users/Shared/SC info) file  No luck
I tried the Terminal based solution  "sumo chmod -R 777 /Shared/Users" fix It didnt work either
I don't get the authorisation warning any more but just get a black screen with a grey horizontal stripe across the middle
I would be very grateful if somene could give me another sollution to try............................
    Thank you very much,
    Sfithy

Double & triple check that you installed the hard drive correctly.

  • Macbook Pro keeps freezing after replaced the hard drive

    hi there,
recently, my macbook pro (15" 2.53 ghz, 4gb ram, 250gb hdd) hard drive crashed, having no warranty left, i went through all of the troubleshooting but nothing worked. i took it into futureshop and they tried the diagnostic and concluded that the hard drive crashed, and they told me to find a new hard drive in their store and theyll replace it for free (because it only takes a few minutes). i found a 500GB 2.5" SEAGATE hard drive in the store, and they fit it in for me. then i took it home and installed the O/S myself.
IT WORKED GREAT!!!!! but my other hard drive was too corrupt to save any of the data, so i had to start from scratch :/
after about a week or so, my mac gradually starting freezing up more and more, and i was worried because that was the initial problem i had.
its been about a month and a half since the first freeze, and im sick of it! about 4 or 5 times a day, the thing would just stop everything its doing, and the mac wheel would spin for about 30 seconds or so froze,, and then go back to normal.
whats confusing is that when im on skype and the mac freezes, i can still talk to the person from voice to voice, but EVERYTHING else just stops lik my itunes and the words im typing.
SO PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS ISSUE ITS KILLING ME!!!!
i am willing to do anything or even replace my hard drive again just to fix this problem, so please your help would be greatly appreciated!
    THANKS !!!

    Hi r,
Why not bring it back to the place you bought the HD and have them test it? If it is the HD, many places will give you a new HD if it has been under a certain time period (often 30 days), otherwise you may have to send it in to Seagate for a warranty replacement.

  • I need to reinstall Snow Leopard on a MacBook 1.1 after replacing the hard drive.  The DVD drive is not working.  What is the best way to do this?

My hard drive died.  I installed a new one and want to restore from my Time Machine back up, but my DVD drive will not read my Snow Leopard upgrade disc.  It did read the grey Tiger install discs that came with the coumputer, so I now am back to 10.4.11, but how do I restore from my Time Machine backup from this point?  The system does recognize the Time Machine Drive, but "restore from backup" simply copies the entire contents to new hard drive.   have access to an external USB DVD drive, but I cannot boot my Snow Leopard upgrade DVD from it.

This article contains instructions for reinstalling OSX on older Macbook Airs.  It should also apply to your situation.  Give it a try.

You transfer the purchases to the computer you use to sync the iPhone.  You can use a thumb drive or an external HD, etc.  Read this: iTunes for Mac - How to copy purchases between computers:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1373

  • How to sync an iPod Touch after replacing the hard drive

    Hello,
The hard drive on my second MacBook Pro failed, so we had a new one fitted.
I recovered most of the data using Data Rescue, so I can grab the music files, photos, Pages files, etc.
However I can't get the User data from the damaged drive, nor any of the software programs and serial numbers so I'm effectively starting again with just the software that comes with a 'new' Mac.
The Apple ID on the iPod Touch is very similar to [email protected]
When I launched iTunes for the first time on the MacBook Pro I entered that email address, but it seemed like a new account was started (?).
I connected the iPod Touch to the MacBook Pro.
    The message I got was...
"The iPod "Toby's iPod Touch" is synced with another itUnes library. Do you want to erase this iPod and sync with this iTunes library?"
    I clicked Cancel.
What do I need to do to get iTunes to recognise this iPod Touch so it finds all the apps we bought for it?
I have a funny feeling that we are logged in as [email protected] in iTunes, but this isn't the same account as the Apple ID of [email protected] on the iPod Touch. Or have I misunderstood something?
Extra info: I think this computer was working with a User name of Chris Payne, but since it's had a new internal drive we've only set up an account called Toby Payne.
I'd appreciate your help! Thank you!

""The iPod "Toby's iPod Touch" is synced with another itUnes library. Do you want to erase this iPod and sync with this iTunes library?""
This is correct. There is no way around this. The ipod touch will sync with one and only one computer/library at a time. If you sync to another, it will indeed erase the current content and replace with the content from the new drive/library.
You can transfer itunes purchases ( including apps) from the ipod. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases

  • Time machine after replacing Mac hard drive

After I replaced my Mac's system drive, Time Machine won't go back prior to the change, even though the data's still in the Backups.backupdb directory.
    Here's my system:
MacPro 2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 6GB RAM
320 GB internal drive = "MacHD" = system drive
1 TB internal drive = "HD1" = new internal drive that will replace MacHD
2 TB external drive = "BKUP_TM" = Time Machine drive
    Here's what I did:
    1. Install and format HD1 as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    2. Clone MacHD to HD1 using SuperDuper, with "copy all files" and "make bootable" options enabled
    3. Remove MacHD and reboot computer with HD1 as new system drive
    4. Mount BKUP_TM
    5. Allow Time Machine software run overnight to do whatever it wants (it recognized the BKUP_TM drive immediately and without my input)
    6. Launch Time Machine software after it completes its activity. This is where I noticed that I could only look back in time 1 day to the point of step 5 above.
    7. At the finder level, open the BKUP_TM drive and notice that:
    A. The data is all held in one directory (as expected)
    B. The data still goes back to August 2012 (as expected)
    Here's my overall question:
How do I get Time Machine to access the data correctly?
If I have to, I could reinstall the MacHD drive, erase HD1 and start over, but I'm concerned that even that would not get me back to being able to access the full depth of my Time Machine data in the Backups.backupdb directory.
Thanks, in advance, for the help,
    -SD

Yes. The good news is all my data is safe on:
    - the original location of MacHD (currently not installed in the Mac)
    - the new location of HD1
    - the TM drive of BKUP_TM
Might it be a good idea for me to do this?
    1. Manually delete any directories on BKUP_TM that are after the change from MacHD to HD1
    2. Reinstall MacHD and remove HD1
    3. Boot from MacHD
    4. Mount BKUP_TM so that it will see MacHD and reassociate itself with MacHD
    5. Reinstall HD1 and reformat it
    6. Remove MacHD
    7. Boot from OS DVD
    8. Use Time Machine to restore from backup (on BKUP_TM) or use Migration Assistant to populate HD1.
This idea has flaws (would step 4 work??) and is a lot of steps and time, but it *might* get me back to a usable TM history.
I should note this: NO work has been done on this computer since I first introduced HD1. This means that I will lose NO data if I go back to MacHD as my system drive and use it as the new starting point.
That's just my idea. All ideas are welcome.

  • Can't install OS X after replacing dead hard drive

    Hello-
Today I replaced the dead hard drive (Genius bar-confirmed) on my MacBook.
    The replacement itself was uneventful.
When I tried to load OS X, I reached the page that asks me which language I want, but that was as far as I could go. I received a warning: "ALERT--this software can't be installed on this computer". I backed out and went into Disk Utility, and YES--it recognized the new hard drive (although there was a line somewhere about "unformatted"). The new drive is a SATA 2.5" Fujitsu 7200 rpm drive. The Genius Bar guy said to definitely get a SATA 2.5".
    Any suggestions, please?
    Much appreciated.
    THANK YOU.

Well. I've checked out all the Fujitsu drive reports here and see no problems...
