After upgrading 10.4.10 to 10.4.11, MacPro boots into command line

the subject line says it all.
how to boot into the GUI?

See this discussion thread Apple - Support - Discussions - Booting to Darwin-BSD Screen for a solution. If it doesn't work you will need to do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Do not upgrade to an IvyBridge processor if you need to boot into 32-bit mode with Lion

I recently upgraded to a MBP running the Ivybridge processor and tried to boot into 32-bit mode.  Although it did boot after a short period (3-5 mins) it totally crashed a locked up.  This was precursored by a graphics error and then the mouse cursor could be moved but nothing else could be done and it was only solved by a hard shut down (holding down the power button).  Previously I had been running a MBP with the Sandybridge architecture and this booted fine into 32-bit mode and worked without a problem.
I spent a lot of time on the phone with Apple care who said they'd not had any reports of this issue and we went right though my system until they said there was nothing else they could do and I should try a re-install of Lion.  I did this onto another hard-drive, booted into it and managed to get the machine to crash again... leading me to understand that it's nothing to do with my setup.
Thinking it might be an issue with my firmware on the mac today I visited an Apple store and tried booting 5 MacBook Pro's and a MacBook Air - all running IvyBridge - into 32-bit mode and managed to cause the same crash on all of them.  If the machine is just booted an left with finder it didn't seem to want to crash but when I opened programs, mainly mac mail, it didn't take too much longer for the crash to occur.
If there are any Apple engineer reading this could you try and reproduce the issue and look at fixing this please as a lot of people still use 32-bit and if I'd known that the IvyBridge processors weren't going to work in 32-bit mode I would have stayed with the Sandybridge MBPs.
    Many Thanks,
    Adam Peters,

That is a pain then.  Pretty much all of the OS included applications (finder, Mail, iTunes, Safari,...) are all fully 64-bit programs now (since Lion) so I can see where launching them when booted into 32-bit mode could cause stability issues.
If you boot into 32-bit mode and just run the Tascam software without launching anything else, will it work?
Was it alright in 10.6? And if so, how about keeping 10.6 in a virtual machine or on a separate disc or partition?

  • MacBook Pro runs very slow after upgrade to Yosemite?  Why did you turn my Mac into a Windows computer?

I upgraded to Yosemite on my MacBook Pro (non-retina).  Now the system is incredibly slow.
    1) wake-up form sleep takes up to a minute
    2) Various icons will not open or respond until I have clicked on it three or four times and get the spinning beach ball (Finder, Calendar, iTunes)
    3) Using Outlook for Mac app - similar issue as 2 when trying to send mail, add attachments or do anything
I am very frustrated by this upgrade.  Any recommendations for speeding the system back to Mountain Lion levels?

  • After updating to 10.7.4 on my imac it booted into a brand new user like i had switched it on for the first time.

    Hello all!
Im logging in with the same credentials that i used literally 15 minutes before the update.
Its really odd. it will not log into my desktop. its a totally new user but using my credentials so all my settings are fresh.
does anyone know a way of getting my machine back to its previous state? i dont use time machine (not sure that would help anyway)
We log into a server here at work which gives us access to the internet and other servers for files etc. But our programs/details are kept locally. like i say the user folder still exists but i cannot log into it as the credentials open up a new user. There are no other credentials to log in with either.
    baffling!
Hope someone has had this problem and managed to sort something out.
    Regards
    Chris

well me and my collegue fixed this. It had renamed the user folder to 'imac' i simply changed the user folder that i originally logged into back to its original name and its now fixed and letting me log back into my proper desktop.

  • Audio no longer working after upgrade

    Hi,
After doing an upgrade this morning, my audio no longer works.
Booting into KDEmod gave the first clue when I got an error message saying audio not found.
The output of alsamixer say "alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device", yet my modules have not changed in rc.conf.
Could this be related to HAL also being updated?
    Thanks,
    JTD

Do you by accident have more than one sound-device? I didn't lose sound but "aplay -l" showed that ALSA has changed the order of the cards. Hence I suddenly didn't get sound from where I expected it.

  • After upgrading to iTunes 9.2, unable to type in text/search fields

    Hi,
After upgrading to iTunes 9.2, I am unable to type into text or search fields within iTunes.
Haven't tried all fields, but I've seen it in both search in iTunes and the iTunes store, and also trying to create folders on my iPhone (through iTunes only, it works fine on the phone).
Anyone else seen this or have an idea for a fix?
    Thanks...

I'm wondering if you figured out this problem. I'm having the exact same issue, which means I can't even log in to my iTunes account. I've even tried uninstalling it and reverting to iTunes 9.1.1, which then won't even open.

  • Issues with bluetooth after upgrading to OSX 10.8

No bluetooth available after upgrading to mountain lion , i only can use it booting in safe mode.

    Reposting myself here:
Have you made your user Library-folder visible in Finder?
I did that in the Terminal and shortly after that the crashes started for me.
I just updated to 10.8.2 and that made the user Library-folder invisible again.
At the same time Bridge started behaving properly.
Not saying that's anything other than a coincidence.

  • No sync after upgrade to Datasync Mobility Pack 1.2.5

    Hello All;
Server is SLES 11 SP2 x86_64 running as a guest VM in a XEN host, GW 2012 SP1
Running Datasync Mobility Pack 1.2.4 and all android devices synced properly.
I've upgraded from Datasync Mobility Pack 1.2.4 to Datasync Mobility Pack 1.2.5. Now only the Android 2.2 devices syncs properly but not the Samsung SII, Android 4.04 device.
I've deleted the device from the mobility connector, reconnected the Samsung SII, Android 4.04, still no sync
I've deleted the user, re added the user, reconnected the Android 4.04 device, still no sync
I've delete the mail account on the Samsung SII and created a new MS Exchange account, still no sync.
Ran the 'python mcheck.pyc' on the problem account which states problems with the mobility folder structure, as noted below.
    No GroupWise configuration problem detected.

User problem detected. Do you want to correct the problem by re-initializing the user? (yes/no)
I've said yes to re-initialize the user, and reconnected the problem device, still no sync.
I've restarted the XEN guest VM server several time
Seems some of the contacts synced bu not all, no calendar, no mail.
    Any help, suggestion, wild guesses?

Read through and wanted to add input to this.
(A few months later I know)
I just Updated Mobility to 1.2.5 299. Had the issue after the update where SLES would show "invalid root file system".. got past that by running the MKINITRD.
After the update, random users could no longer sync their inbox. Everything else worked fine, calendar events remained synced and they could still send mail.
Looking at the DataSync Mobility Monitor and navigated to that users stats, each user that had issues did not have their "/inbox" listed.
No amount of re-sync or re-initialize would resolve.
    No GWCHECKs would resolve.
No rebuilding the user DB or Structural Rebuild would resolve.
Python MCHECK can see the 'sync failures' on the mobile device config, offers to re-init to no avail.
    Resolution
It is the dumbest fix in the world I swear......
THEIR MAILBOX was moved into a sub-folder in the GroupWise client. (so many 4 letter words)
After having the user drag their mailbox out of the or any and all sub-folders, re-initialized the user, *angels sing* and the "/inbox" is now listed as an available folder in the Mobility Monitor for that user.
Mobility could not find the inbox in order to index or label it (or know where to place it on the mobile device). Something like that...
I have seen the weirdness that can occur is someone decides to share out their entire mailbox, never would have thought having the mailbox in a sub-folder would brake Mobility after upgrade. Not going to test if moving it back into a sub-folder re-brakes it, but it looks like the mailbox cannot be in a sub-folder for the initial sync.
    Hope this helps someone.
    Josh.

Anyone having similar issues? I have more pinwheels after upgrading.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Should I delete iChat Icons folder after upgrading to Mountain Lion?

I just upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. I see an IChat Icons folder alias in my Pictures folder.
Is the original file folder that it references used for anything in Mountain Lion? For example, can Messages access it?
Should I delete the alias and the original now that I have upgraded to Mountain Lion?
    thanks,
    Kevin

    Hi,
I am booted into Yosemite and the version there called Messages 8 (It is also Messages 8 in Mavericks but they are significantly different)
I see this and I think the labelling has changed
This is the lower end of Defaults.
At the top of the Apple User account selection. (see below)
That is followed by the iChat Icons selection. That is the Flags, Flowers and Fruits, guitars, planets and masks plus the Pokemon like ones and the gems
I have always found it defaults to the Recents "folder".
I am struggling to remember how it was in Messages 7 in Mountain Lion.

  • Blue screen - after booting into Darwin/BSD

    Hi,
after I had the problem of my iMac G5 only booting into Darwin/BSD (which I posted here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1093517&tstart=0), I followed the instructions for recreating the user accounts, as described here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=320663&start=0&tstart=0
Now I'm able to get to the blue screen, and the system doesn't exit into Darwin/BSD any longer. However, the Setup Assistant doesn't start either.
I only see an empty blue screen (I guess it's the GUI base screen) and the menu bar. The menu bar only has to items: one menu 'loginwindow', which doesn't have any entries. And the Apple-logo menu, which has the following menu entries:
    - About This Mac
    - Software Update...
    - Mac OS X Software...
    - System Preferences...
    - Dock >
    - Location >
    - Force Quit...
    - Sleep
    - Restart...
    - Shot Down...
    - Log Out System Administrator...
The 'Restart...' entry doesn't work. I can, however, launch the System Preferences window.
    Tail command of /var/log/System.log shows:

Any recommendations on what to do next?
    Thanks!

Apologies, was a little vague. and as far as my profile goes i have loads of mac's here in the studio.
using MBP latest model, Snow Leopard with latest updates.
    1. boot up in windows XP SP3 (bootcamp NTFS formatted 32GB partition) - all ok
    2. shut down windows and re boot in OSX
    3. boots up but fails to complete and hangs on blue screen (just prior to desk top picture loading)
    4. press and hold power button to shut down
    5. reboot in OSX - boots up fine this time

  • ASA5510 VPN not working after upgrade from 8.2 to 8.3

    Hi,
I have recently upgraded a customer ASA5510 to version 8.3.
After upgrade web access etc is working fine however VPN is down.
The config looks very different after the upgrade plus what looks to be duplicate entries.
I suspect its an access list issue but I'm not sure.

    Hi,
    Many thanks for your reply.
Finally got access to implement your suggestions.
Initially none of the VPN's were up.
After making the change the two VPN's came up.
However only data via the first VPN is possible.
Accessing resources on the 10.1.2.0 network is still not possible.
    Attached is the latest config, any input is greatly appreciated;

  • Web Query (.iqy) not working in Excel after upgrade to 11.1.1.6

After upgrade 11.1.1.5 to 11.1.1.6, the Web Query (.iqy) does not work. After open the .iqy file in Excel, entered the user and password, it only pulls in "PK" in one cell, instead of the expected analysis report. This was working in 11.1.1.5 before upgrade.
Does anyone know how to correct this issue? Is this a bug in 11.1.1.6, or required some new configuration settings?
    Thanks in advance.

  • I cannot update apps after upgrading to Yosemite. Please Help!

    Hello,
After upgrading to Yosemite, i wanted to go on to iMovie, but i have to update. So i try to update but it refuses and tells me: "This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled."
So what i understand is because i bought this mac in the US and I'm using it in the UK its not letting me update it. But what i don't understand is that i was able to upgrade to Yosemite with my mac knowing i was in the UK.
How can i update my applications?
    Thank you for your time,
    TOAOMA

Perform the following, stopping with the first one which works:
    1. Open the Mac App Store's Purchases tab. If you're prompted to accept it and the other iLife/iWork applications into your Apple ID, do so.
    2. Move them out of the Applications folder(they may need to be put into the Trash temporarily), and then see if you can download them for free from their individual product pages. If you're asked to buy them, see #3.
    3. Click here, contact Apple, and wait for a response.
    4. Buy them.

  • Cannot open customize OAF screen after upgrade to 12.1.3

    Hi,
After upgrade to 12.1.3, I am not able top open customize OAF screens from Applications.
By following some documents from MOS, I have done the following.
1)-applied patch 9879989 on Linux server.
2)-I am able to install JDeveloper, open and compile my customize programs from JDeveloper installed on Linux server. I compilation, new *.jpx files created from *.jpr
From Oracle Applications, I am getting the same error that I was getting without compiling customize program.
My question is that, how Oracle applications will read the new compiled program. Do all program need to be in specific unix directory ?
I copied all the customized program under " /u01/oracle/jdev_install_dir/jdevhome/jdev/myprojects" .
I think the problem is now to place OAF files in the problem directory, which I don't know.
Do I need to set environment variable like JDEV_USER_HOME in the environment file ?
    Please help.
    Best Regards

Not sure if your issue is resolved. Did you compile the java sources in JDeveloper and moved all files from myclasses folder to unix under $JAVA_TOP or appropriate directory and deployed the PG files using xmlimporter?
    Thanks
    Shree
