Air Port Newbie - What do I do?

Help. I'm over my head and treading water. I want to add wifi to my home (apartment) but not sure if Air Port is right for my needs.
I've got an iMac, MacBook Pro, MacBook and a Mac Pro. I'm a graphic designer and often need to email large files.
Can I do this using Air Port? Can I FTP using Air Port? I use Comcast cable modem for my connection. The Comcast people said I can easily add Air Port to my Comcast modem? Has anyone out there done this before? How fast is an Air Port connection?
I may use a lot of computers but I'm a designer mostly and a hardware dummy. Thanks in advance.

It would be great to get iTunes to play over the air but my main interest in getting wifi internet access for all of my computers. I don't need to send files to a printer over the air, all of the hardware is connected with wires. I just want a fast internet connection that I can use for work - upload, download, ftp.
The Airtunes feature is available only on the Express (audio plug goes into a stereo or speakers). All three (Express, Extreme, Time Capsule) can connect a USB printer (ideal for printer if you don't want to turn on the Mac that the printer is connected to). Only the latter 2 can be used with Time Machine for NAS backup.
Your requirement for fast internet has nothing to do with the 3 choices. That is dependent on your Comcast ISP.
I recall Express has a 10 client limit. The other 2 have a 50 client limit.

  • What do I need to connect my new Yamaha RX-V671 receiver wirelessly to my Air Port Express?

I have just received my new Yamaha RX-V671 receiver and the only connection I have for the internet is by a network cable or by a USB slot.  I would like to hook this up wirelessly to my Air Port Express, I just need to know what I need to get so I can stream my itunes to this receiver.  My receive is roughly about 50 feet from my Air Port Express.

but what I was hoping to do is hook up my receiver wirelessly
Sorry, but if the receiver only has an Ethernet connection or USB...as you say....then you are going to have to use some kind of wireless-to-Ethernet adapter....like the AirPort Express that I suggested....or another similar product to accomplish your goal of providing a network connection to the receiver.
It would be wireless from your "main" AirPort Express to the second AirPort Express, with a short Ethernet cable from the second Express to the receiver.

  • My Air port is not working the wifi - just an amber light blinking. What's going on ?

My air port is not working the wifi - just an amber light blinking. What's going on ?

Sorry it is just not enough info to be able to figure it out.
Do a full factory reset and start over.. that is the best way out of the hole.
Using ethernet is far far superior to using wireless at least for setup.
Using iOS device with airport utility is better than using wireless via a Mac with airport utility if you have MBA or MBPr.. but it is still better to buy a usb or thunderbolt to ethernet dongle so you have actual real connection and not a vapourous one.

  • What do i do if air port reads self -assigned IP address

  • How do i identify what devices are connected to 101, 102, etc on my air port extreme?

How do i identify what devices are connected to 101, 102, etc on my air port extreme?

Depending on whether a device is connecting using Ethernet or wireless, you need to know the Ethernet ID or AirPort ID of the device. That is the number that is associated with the IP address that is displayed in AirPort Utility.
For example, if you have a Mac....
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) and open Network
Click on AirPort , then click Advanced at the lower right
The AirPort ID of the Mac is displayed at the bottom of the window
For the Ethernet ID, click on Ethernet, then click Advanced, then click the Ethernet tab
The Ethernet ID is displayed at the top of the window
    On an iPhone.....
Tap the Settings icon, tap General, tap About, then scan down to locate Wi-Fi Address, also known as the AirPort ID.

  • Newbie : what is .fpt file extension for adobe air ?

    Hi all the master,
Hereby i have attached the printscreen of what i got from my client recently.
I have already install the .air file, and it prompts to open the .fpt files. So i click on the fpt file. It loads halfway, and automatic close the whole application.
As im a super newbie to AIR, may i know what is .fpt file extention to air ? and what kind of editor i must use to edit the content in the .fpt ?
Hope to hear from all the master soon
    thanks
    C.K

This looks VERY similar to a project I created for a client!
The .fpt file, as Joe suggests, a custom file type created for the use by the Air app. It's probably just a re-labeled zip file to be honest! Probably contains the slides of the presentation as a guess??
You shouldn't need to worry about the .fpt files. You should open them from within the Air app and not by opening them outside of the app - the OS might not recognise them unless the Air app has registered the .fpt extension upon it's own installation.
    Hope that helps.
    Dave.

  • Since I've upgraded to Maverick the airpot utility does not recognise that there is a time capsule on the wireless network. I can see the TC using the air port utility on my iPhone5 and on my iPad. What am I doing wrong on my macbook?

I have over 250G backed up and I really don't want to reset everything and start again.
Not sure what you mean here.
A reset will not affect any of the data on the Time Capsule hard drive.  You would have to perform a completely separate and very deliberate Erase Disk operation for that to occur.
I'm not recommending that you perform a default reset, but it is an option if there is really nothing else to try.
I don't know if what you are seeing is a Mavericks issue or not, since I refuse to use any new software until at least the first major update with fixes comes along.
Another user may be able to offer more input on Mavericks.

  • What is the throughput of the Air port Express?

What is the throughput of the Air port Express? I have optimum online with 30mbps download and 2mbps download. Can the internal archectiture of the current Airport Express handle my throughput of five wireless computers? In another can it truly handle 30mbps throughput internally?

Not sure if this answers all questions but the following was copied from the Airport Express Tech Specs.
AirPort Express uses the 802.11g wireless standard. Accessing the wireless network requires an AirPort or AirPort Extreme enabled computer or Wi-Fi-certified 802.11b or 802.11g computer. Achieving data rates of 54 Mbps requires that all users have an AirPort Extreme or Wi-Fi-certified 802.11g enabled computer and connect to an AirPort Express Base Station. If a user of a Wi-Fi-certified 802.11b product joins the network, that user will get up to 11 Mbps and AirPort Extreme and Wi-Fi-certified 802.11g users will get less than 54 Mbps. Actual speed will vary based on range, connection rate, site conditions, size of network, and other factors.
    Wireless data rates
Up to 54 Mbps for AirPort Extreme-enabled and other Wi-Fi Certified 802.11g computers (data rate depends on environment)
Up to 11 Mbps for AirPort-enabled and other Wi-Fi 802.11b-enabled computers (data rate depends on environment)
    Range
50-foot range from the base station in typical use at 54 Mbps data rate (range depends on building construction)
150-foot range from the base station in typical use at 11 Mbps data rate (range depends on building construction)

  • TS1398 What is an Air Port? I have a printer but my iPad doesn't seem to connect to it although it connects to my wi FI. Tt.

    What is an air port?

An Airport Ida place where planes land.  It's also Apples name for its modems and routers.
Are you asking about AirPrint?  What is your specific question?

  • Air port extreme lost al the lights and restarting doenst wark. Cables are OK. What to do?

My air port extreme stoped working, no any light. I tried to restart, unplug and plug it again, nothing happen. Any idea?

Unfortunately, if the light is out, the outboard power supply has failed, or the internal power supply has failed.
If you have a voltage tester, check the outboard power supply for 12 volts. If it delivers 12 volts, then the internal power supply on the AirPort Extreme has failed, and you will need to replace the AirPort Extreme.
If the outboard power supply does not work, you might be able to replace that outboard power supply to get things working again.
Take the AirPort Extreme to an Apple Store....if you have one near you.....to let them take a look.

  • How can I use my IPAD to stream Musik to two Air Port Clients in a network at the same time?

I want to stream my musik via I PAD to more than one Air Port Clients at the same time. Via MAC it is possible to select "more speaker". In the I PAD I can only select Station 1 or Station 2.

I opened Airport Utility today and it appears to have been simplified to the point where you can't do much with it these days.
Yes, welcome to the Fisher Price toy box utility.. where nothing in the way of advanced usage is offered.
Is there a way to accomplish what I want to do that is reasonably simple?
You can put time controls onto the offending addresses.
But if the hackers know anything at all they know how to access the MAC address of the computer and change it.. so the effectiveness of this is limited.
Change the current setup and password.. You must use WPA2 Personal and I recommend you use a pure alphanumeric password, mix case and numbers of 20 characters or more for your situation.. do not give that password to anyone.. protect the admin password of the TC itself equally well but with a different password. And protect the physical access to the TC from anyone in your home.. because the fact is all security on the TC is an illusion if the TC has open access.
See how to find passwords here.
i forgot my password for my router, how can I change them.
So anyone can discover your passwords without your knowledge and leave no trace on your system.
If you make no progress.. I suggest replacement of the TC as the main router of your network.. you need something with controls.. and even better controls that allow you to block people.
The favourite one now is older Netgear WNDR3800 . .you might need to buy from ebay although a few new ones are still around.. alternatively the WNDRMACv2 is simply the same hardware in a white box.. instead of black.
Load gargoyle firmware onto it.. sorry if I even point to where you can find this info my post will be deleted.. I can say it.. just cannot help further.. so use google.. there are lots of posts and let me assure you this get combo.
You can continue to use TC at what it does best.. a dumb wireless AP and location for TM backups.

  • Hi, I'm using a Mac Pro here. I am trying to connect it with my NAS hard drive. But i could not connect to it because i have an ethernet which connects to the intranet in my company and Air Port for the internet.

Hi, I'm using a Mac Pro here. I am trying to connect it with my NAS hard drive. But i could not connect to it because i have an ethernet which connects to the intranet in my company and Air Port for the internet and it could not detect the the ip address after i input the correct address on "Connect to Server" window. Please help! Urgent! Thanks

I did not say it is not possible.
I said if your company networks are monopolizing both ports, you should talk to them about what options are available.
Maybe you can get the company Intranet over wireless if you change some configuration items such as Subnet Mask.
Maybe you can get on the Internet over Ethernet.
You really need to ask them, and do not let them blow you off because you have a Mac. If they balk, ask them how it would be done on a PC (becasue it will be the same on a Mac).

  • Time capsule 1st generation - extension with air port extreme

My parents use a time capsule (1st generation) as wireless lan device. As they run a boarding house they wish to provide free internet access to all of their guests (in all rooms). Therefore I bought an air port extreme station to extend the network as this product now (finally) includes the option »guest network«.
The question is the following: *Should I keep the time capsule as basic device connected to the modem and use the air port extreme as extension or do you recommend to set it up vice versa?*
I checked the range of the time capsule: It can be used in already in the first floor but not in the second anymore.
I am really unsure how I should approach this topic and I hope more expirienced users can provide some help to this issue. Maybe you can also give me some security advice. In order to protect kids from misusing this new possiblity I was thinking of using opendns to block certain websites. Maybe there are also betters ways of doing this?

    Need a bit more info.
Now this is what happens when I plug it in:
Plug it into power?? The main router?? Sorry I am unclear what you are plugging it into.
It sounds like you have not done the setup.
The TC should be in bridge and plugged into the current modem router you have.. and powered on full time.
If you cannot access it via the utility, I strongly suggest you buy the apple usb to ethernet dongle.. which helps air people no end.. or use any other computer that has a real ethernet port.
Otherwise set to factory and start over. (this will not do anything to what you already have on the disk).
Hold in reset and power on the TC.. wait about 10sec until the front led rapidly flashes. .then you can connect the computer.. and do the setup.. choose bridge in the Network section of the utility and update the TC.
Then you can plug it into the main router and access it and internet at the same time.. either by TC wireless or the main modem wireless.
Please note. .Gen1 TC is only going to last very little time.. it is already well past the average lifespan.. many died at 2years.. most gone by 4years.. plan on storing nothing important on it.
