Airport Express 2nd WAN Port light always on, even when nothing is connected.

My Airport Express 2nd WAN Port light always on, even when nothing is connected.
Is this normal? The Airport utility also said that I didn't connect anything to the port - when there is a lan cable connected from the main Airport Extreme.
The computer can connect to the WiFi from the Airport Express properly, but with blinking yellow and no internet connection, also it cannot obtain the ip address.
After setting the Airport Express to the Bridge mode, the computer cannot access to the Airport Express anymore, with "Connection Time Out" error.
The Airport Express was 3 days old, and was working properly until today. There is also one blackout today because of the storm.
Had reset the Airport several times, didn't solve the problem.

Hi again. That is a good idea. Check if router can grab an ip from your modem since wireless local connection through the router is working. If it can grab an ip and works fine on wireless, then you might have a problem with the ethernet ports. You might want to try assigning an ip address on the wired connection and see if ip of router is pingable. If really not working at all, possibility that router is not working properly anymore.

  • PG 522 Field Point I/O Activity Lights always on even when no output is requeste

I am making Time Duration outputs to a PG-522 Module. SOmetimes, even when I have no output the activity light stays on all the time. The only way to clear it is to reset the Field Point Communications. What could Cause this to happen?

    Hi Pat,
The activity light does not tell you if your channel is in the ON or OFF state.  It tells you if the channel is generating pulses.  According to the manual, if you  are using the 1s resolution the max ON/OFF time is 65,535s.  This could cause the activity light to stay on while it looks like you have no output.

  • Can the WAN port be used as LAN when AirPort Express (2nd Generation) is setup to join a wireless network?

Can the WAN port be used as LAN when AirPort Express (2nd Generation) is setup to join a wireless network? (IE: 2 LAN ports)
I haven't been able to get a clear answer on this. I believe the 1st generation would act as WAN/LAN depending on setting, but what happens with the 2nd generation?
    Thank you for your time.

If the Express joins a wireless network wirelessly, in other words its WAN port isn't connected to anything, the correct way to connect a wired client to it is by using its LAN port.
I don't know what would happen if you were to connect a wired client to its WAN port instead — it's just not supposed to be used for that purpose. It won't permanently break anything if you were to try it though. If you were, the worst that would occur is that your network would become unresponsive as packets continuously traverse its WAN port in a circular fashion, which might require that you power down your router to reset your whole network.
If you are already using your Express's LAN port and you need another, the way to provide more ports is to purchase an inexpensive ($10 or so) switch. Connect it to the LAN port and as many other pieces of equipment as the switch's available number of ports.
You're correct about the first generation with the single Ethernet port. It could be used in either capacity depending on its configuration.

  • How to find MAC address for WAN port for Airport Express 2nd Gen.

The New Airport Express has a LAN and a WAN ethernet ports. How can I find the MAC address for the WAN ethernet port as my Service Provider needs it for provisioning....I can fid MAC address for Ethernet and for two wireless 2.4 & 5GHz but not for WAN ethernet port using Airport Utility 6.1

Many thanks for the swift response. However, there is no WAN MAC address on the box or on the device anywhere. I even used magnifying glass to find one .
The airport utility shows only three mac addresses. One for 2.4GHz, one for 5GHz and one fo the ethernet (LAN port) whereas there is another ethernet port in the device mentioned as WAN port and I am still not able to find the MAC address for the WAN ehternet port for Airport Express (2nd Generation).
Will appreciate a response to make th device work wiht my service provider as providing them the WAN mac address is a must. Had there been an option for cloning mac address, the issue would have not been there.
Many thanks again - in advance.

  • Windows 7 conflict with airport express 2nd generation

My airport express (2nd generation) is losing it's wifi connection with my router after being connected for an hour or so. It was worse (happened faster) until I made some setting changes. Here is the current config and purpose of what I am trying to accomplish...
Goal - Connect my son's new gamer computer that is running windows 7 professional to the internet
    Config -
    1. Airport is set up to connect to an existing wireless network that uses WPA/WPA2 Personal security
    2. Ethernet cord is plugged into the ethernet slot in the back of the airport and runs to the ethernet slot on the computer.
Once the connection is lost, all you have to do is unplug and re plug in the airport and the light goes green and all is good for a little bit.
Yes, I have unplugged, disconnected and reconnected the router, too after making changes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • No internet access, wan port light does not glow solid

    Hello,
I can set up a wireless network with my Airport Extreme but I can't connect to the Internet through it.
The light above the wan port does not glow solid when a cable is attached between the base station and the cable modem.
(Sometimes the Wan port light will glow solid for a few minutes but then it will go out.)
I've tried several Ethernet cables but no go.
I've also tried resetting the Airport to its factory settings.
Does this mean that the Wan port is bad?
Or is there a fix for this issue?
Any help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Mike

    Hi Bob,
I don't know how to pull a cable modem's internal battery.
I can "hot swap" my airport express in and everything works fine.
But my airport sprang back to life last night!
(I got up during the night and set it up again on a whim.)
    Everything was working great!
(even my Mac mini which is connected to an HDTV was able to connect to the Internet wirelessly)
But then I needed to unplug the modem and base station (to arrange the power cords) and then no Internet again.
I powered everything down and went back to bed.
This a.m., I reset the airport extreme (hard reset), powered everything back on and still no Internet.
I keep getting the "Nothing is connected to the Ethernet Wan port" message when the cable connection is secure.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Airport Express (2nd gen), Airport Extreme and Airport TimeCapule (3rd Gen) interoperability

Airport Express (2nd gen), Airport Extreme and Airport TimeCapule (3rd Gen) interoperability
When all configured to provide wireless the network (Wired/Wireless) become unstable and very slow. When I disable wireless on the Airport Express the problem disappears. The problem effects all endpoint clients (iPhones, iPads, Mac's and windows) Any ideas?
    I own the following
    Airport Express 802.11n (2nd gen)
    Airport Extreme 82.11ac
    Airport TimeCapule 802.11n (3rd Gen)
    Config
Each of the Airport's WAN port is connected my AT&T Uverse modem
    Latest firmware on each device
    All use static IP's (192.168.1.x)
Airport's are all configured to "Create a wireless network" with same network name, security and password.
Wireless options are using Automatic for Radio's and Channels
Router mode is "Off (Bridge Mode)"

Don't do that. Decide which one of your AirPort Base Stations is to serve as your router. Connect that one, and no others, to the modem. Connect all the others to it, and configure them as bridges.

  • AirPort Express (2nd generation) not visible in AirPort Utility or iTunes (AirPlay)

    Hi!
I'm using an AirPort Express (2nd generation) for my Wi-Fi. I've configured the AirPort Express with my iPhone 5, but when I try to find the AirPort Express on my Windows 8 computer, it doesn't show up in the AirPort Utility software and in iTunes, the AirPlay function is not available. The AirPlay function is working fine on my iPhone 5/5s. What can I do to get the AirPlay function working in iTunes on my computer?
    I thank you in anticipation!

  • Troubleshooting Airport Extreme's wan port?

I have an Airport Extreme base station that doesn't seem to be communicating through its WAN port.  Both Apple and Windoze computers can connect to it, wired or wirelessly, but I am unable to make the base station communicate with a gateway device, a (PPoE) DSL modem.  My brother (whose device this is) was having the same problem with his cable modem.
As the Airport boots, the link light on the WAN port blinks green a couple of times, only instantaneously, but otherwise remains dark.  Once it's booted, the status light blinks amber.  And of course there is no throughput, no connectivity to the Internet.
I also have a LinkSys WiFi router that works perfectly using the same gateway device and the same ethernet cable, which gives me to believe both the modem and the cable are in proper working order.  All the configuration information I'm entering into the Airport's web interface I'm cut and pasting from the same text file I habitually use to the LinkSys router (to cut down on clerical errors).  So presuming it's configured properly, presuming the cable and the gateway aren't at fault, I have to think the WAN port has given up the ghost.
So I thought to ask the Apple cognoscenti if they agree with my diagnosis.  Is there a diagnostic I'm overlooking?  Do the WAN ports on these devices have a history of being problematic?
    TIA
    Slanjevar!

I have discovered the chief problem was that the Airport doesn't take kindly to unresolved/unacknowledged errors/conditions under the Status button on the Summary page of the Airport utility.  It was regarding "extended mode" as an abnormality requiring acknowledgment, as well as my switching off all wireless security, as a temporary diagnostic measure.  Once I'd told it to 'Ignore' those conditions, I got both a solid green status light and a steady green link light on the WAN port.
However, it still isn't passing data.
As I was stumbling around in the Airport utility's GUI (before resolving the "start button" problem), I noticed it had an "Extend a wireless network" mode.  Since what my brother was after in the first place was getting stronger signal to the far end of the house, I asked if this wouldn't better suit his needs than substituting the Airport for his current (underpowered?) WiFi router.  He agreed, so I've changed my focus to setting up the Airport as an 'extender.'
Now, reconfigured in 'extender' mode, its 'Status' on the GUI's 'Summary' page shows 'Normal' and the status light is steady green.  The GUI for my WRT54 (with DD-WRT firmware) shows it is authenticated and joined to the network, as both a LAN and a wireless client.  And the Airport's logs concur: "Joined BSS [WRT54's MAC]" and "Installed unicast TKIP key for authenticator [WRT54's MAC]".
I've done this with the Airport either using DHCP or with a statically configured IP address to see if it made any difference.  It does not, either to its ability to join the network or to its (lack of) throughput.  So every indication I can find confirms it is a connected and fully functioning member of my network.
I also have an XPSP3 box connected to one of the LAN ports on the Airport.  The NICs on both ends show a solid green link light.  The Airport's logs acknowledge that the XP box is connected: "Connection accepted from [::ffff:192.168.1.3]".  And the XP box can 'ping' the Airport.  All of which spells "connected" to me.
However, the XP box can neither draw an IP address (the Airport's DHCP clients list remains empty) nor communicate with anything upstream of the Airport (which it only can do once I have given it a static IP address).  If I try to tracert or pathping from the XP box to the WRT54 (via the Airport), it stalls out at the Airport.  The response is the same whether I have the Airport's WAN port connected to a LAN port on the WRT54 or not.
Address scheme-wise, my WiFi router (WRT54) is on 192.168.1.1.  The XP box that I have connected to the Airport via ethernet has a reserved IP of 192.168.1.3, but now is configured statically to that address because the Airport (seemingly) does not support it contacting the DHCP server.  The Airport consistently had been drawing the first available address from the DHCP pool, 192.168.1.10, but now I have it statically configured to .100 because my brother doesn't use DHCP reservations on his network, and I'm replicating how he will configure it to leave nothing to chance.  Having a static address saves him grief having to figure out what its address has become should the Airport utility not be able to find it (which seems to be its norm) and he has to connect manually through the Airport utility.
I've spent almost every waking minute tinkering with this thing since midday yesterday and I've not yet seen evidence that the Airport has passed so much as a single bit of data.  And it isn't just the WAN port, it doesn't want to pass anything wirelessly either.  This thing is about to get my goat.  Remind me never again to offer my brother a favor.
Any thoughts?  Humorous anecdotes?  Naughty limericks?
    EDIT:
I also have a network detector on my cell phone than can identify every device, wireless or otherwise, on the network its connected to.  But it does not "see" either the Airport or, naturally, the XP box beyond it.

  • AirPort Express (2nd) Internet Connection Speed

    Dear All
    First of all, I looked everywhere on the internet about this issue I’m having and couldn’t find any solution. To explain my issue let me tell you how and why I use AirPort Express shortly;
    My Purpose
I have a wireless network and all my PCs are connected in one network. I have a Windows server and using it for general purposes and also as a file server. But if someone joins my network, they all are able to see my shared folders. They are able to read/write files (even delete them).
So I decided to create 2 networks with AirPort Express (2nd Generation). I have a wireless network for internal use only (for me and my PCs) and one Guest network.
Everything seems okay and there is nothing wrong.
How I Installed AirPort Express (APE)
I connected APE to my router (standard US Robotics DSL router) and my switch to APE. I used AirPort Utility on a Windows 8 PC and configured APE settings.
Base Station status seems normal (have a green light as well) and works okay. I can use my internal network, my PCs are communication with each other (they are all on the same switch). Guest network also works okay and seems like there is nothing wrong.
My router uses 192.168.2.xx IP range and APE is using its own 10.0.1.xx IP range. This makes APE to add an issue to Issues list as Double NAT.
    What is Wrong?
I have internet connection and I can browse web pages and do that kind of things. But my internet connection is really slow and some times cannot display web pages. I have to refresh some pages a few times to display it. My ping increased 5-6 times over than normal.
I thought the problem is the PC that I’m using but then realized that every PC has the same issue. I made a speed test and it showed 352ms ping to the nearest server to me which is really a high value.
My connection is unstable. It’s not dropping but speed suffers. Here is a test result. In this test my ping was 31 ms but as you see speeds are suffering. My connection is supposed to be 8mbps (Down) and 1mbps (Up).
What should I do to fix it? What is the point I’m missing? Could you please help me? Please let me know if you require further information.
    Thank you very much.
    Best Regards

    Dear All;
I just disabled DHCP Server from my router and now it seems to be better. But I don't know if it's something that I shouldn't do or not. Have any ideas?
This is the new result after disabling DHCP from my US Robotics router. There are still some minor issues (latency, slow downs etc.) but now seems to be better than before.
PS: I still have that "Double NAT" notification under Issues section.

  • Airport express has a port for audio out that says optical?

So I just got my Airport Express and want to use it to Airplay to my stereo.  It has a minijack for that, but in the setup guide it talks about optical output.  I don't understand minijack and optical in the same hole.  I don't want to break it jamming the wrong thing in there.  Can anybody enlighten me?

Either an analog 3.5mm stereo mini plug will fit in the audio port.....or....a mini Toslink optical digital plug will fit very nicely in the audio port.
If you plug a 3.5mm stereo mini plug in the audio port, an analog audio signal will be delivered to your amp/speakers.
If you plug a mini Toslink plug in, an optical digital signal will be sent to your amp/speakers
The audio port on the AirPort Express is smart. It knows what kind of plug is connected, so it knows whether to send an analog signal or a digital signal.

  • Apple TV 1st generation cannot use AirTunes with Apple TV 2nd generation or Airport express 2nd generation

Is it normal that Apple TV 1st generation cannot use AirTunes with Apple TV 2nd generation or Airport express 2nd generation? I want to play music synced in my ATV 1st gen. to a nymber of speakers in the house. In the list of speakers I can see Apple TV itself and my two Airport Expresses 1st generation but not my Apple TV 2nd generation or my Airport express 2nd generation. For the ATV 2nd gen. I found a solution: when I enable the Airplay setting of XBMC which is installed on my ATV 2nd generation, then AirTunes in ATV 1st gen. sees the speaker "XBMS (Apple-TV)". Itunes can in my Macbook pro can use Airplay with all my speakers, i.e. ATV 1st gen., ATV 2nd gen., Airport Express 1st gen., Airport Express 2nd gen.

Last time I checked ATV1 could not use Airtunes to send audio to an AppleTV 2 or 3 - highly annoying as you think they would have kept backwards compatibiility for audio, but it seems Airplay is more than a superset of Airtunes.

  • Downgrading Airport Express 2nd gen. to 7.6.1

    Hi there,
I've just acquired another Airport Express today, 2nd gen., replacing a 1st gen. (n draft version) because of dual-band capabilities. Like other people, I have trouble with firmware 7.6.4 when playing music over AirPlay and optical to external DAC (see e.g. https://discussions.apple.com/message/19806591). I hear frequent high-pitch high-volume glitches, which ruins the listening experience. My 1st gen. could downgrade to 7.6.1 through AirPort Utility, but I can't do that with the 2nd gen. The message is "The selected firmware file is not compatible with this AirPort base station." I got the file as detailed on this site: http://www.laszlopusztai.net/2013/02/11/downgrading-airport-extreme-to-7-6-1/ (I tried all of them called 7.6.1.)
TL;DR: Is there any way to downgrade AirPort Express 2nd gen. to firmware version 7.6.1 so that optical out to a DAC works again?
    Thanks!

    Tks for the info.
I read tons and tons of posts here... have the same problem : can't downgrade from 7.6.3 to 7.6.1 because my airport express has been shipped with the 7.6.3 firmware version (how lucky ! ;-(
And no way to manually install the 7.6.1 binary as well (found here : http://www.laszlopusztai.net/2013/02/11/downgrading-airport-extreme-to-7-6-1/ see comments) when using the option key (option "Other").The install failed.
So, no solution at all ?? This is crazy !
