Airport Extreme and a Lacie Rugged - match made in ****?

After giving up with a time machine I have purchased an Airport Extreme. I have my itunes library on a Lacie Rugged drive attached to an Airport Extreme.
The drive is one of my login items. Recently it has failed to connect on launch but when I go to airport utlity the extreme light is green. i can also access the drive fine through finder. I changed the name and maybe didnt change it on the login item list- could this be a problem? (have since re-added it following name change from robbie's airport to simply 'airport')
Is it a problem with the Lacie in terms of going to sleep or not having enough power? If so then I will simply buy a new nas and attach it instead. Im using it for sonos, hence why my music is on an external drive.
any hints recommendations gratefully received. thanks

So if I connected the hub to the airport extreme with the lacie plugged into the hub?
Not tried this yet. Have got an app from the store which automatically mounts the drive. Just worried if the mac is left off for a long time and the drive is inactive will it go to sleep and wont automatically be woken up?
Im trying to find a long term solution.

  • Airport Extreme and the Lacie 500GB mini firewire & usb no shut down issue.

Hey there everyone out there in cyberland, I was hoping that some one could shed some light on this simple issue I am having. I connected my airport extreme directly to the Lacie mini and the fan on the mini never shuts off because it never gets to go into sleep mode. Besides letting shutting it off completely is there a way that the airport can have a direct energy saver so the hard drive does not lose life through the time it is on and spinning? Apple should look into this kind of app since they are trying to be as green as possible. I do not want to have to buy a mac mini to just run the energy save on board the OS there. Is there a patch of fix for this, I looked in the airport utility and there is nothing there so am I missing something?
    Thanks a million!

    Nope. Sorry.

Nope. No patch. Your only choice is call Apple Support (you have 90 days to do so for free from the date you purchased the AEBSn), and report the problem.

  • New Airport Extreme and iPhone Issues

I've had the networking day from ****. I previously had a 3rd Gen Time Capsule at our restaurant, connected to a Cisco 26port gigabit POE switch and Comcast digital voice and internet. Over the past few days, employees have reported trouble accessing the the Wifi network. After several restarts and firmware upgrades (including the dreaded "firmware problem" to fine update), nothing worked. I changed channels, back to auto, back to specific channels, back to auto. Made open guest networks. Nothing worked consistently. My iPhone might connect and my friend's might not. Nor his laptop consistently. Our Axis network cameras might take a bit extra time to connect. All quite random and quite frustrating.
So I swap out an older Airport Extreme (4th gen I believe) using the same configuration as the TC (Time Capsule). It works fine, except for the last port not working as expected. No matter, I plug the mac mini into the Cisco switch and off we go. Nevertheless, I'm still told we are suffering random Wifi issues. So I buy a brand new AE (5th gen) today to replace that one. Should work like a charm I thought. Right....
Several hours later, I finally have the new AE working, but only after doing several hard resets/factory restores, the works. For some reason, the mac mini could not successfully update any of the connected AEs - whether connected directly into the same AE, or if the Mini was connected to the switch. Nothing worked. Every time I tried to update the AE, it would hang and force me to unplug and plug it back in. It would also never save setting changes. I finally resorted to a friend's macbook to be able to restore it successfully. And once that worked, the mini was able to update the AE flawlessly. Our Point of Sales (POS) machines connect fine, our cameras connect fine, wifi printer connects, and the mini connects, and everything has internet.
Except my iPhone 5. Of course. It gets a signal fine (full bars). It gets an IP address. But I can't surf the web. Or download email. Or iMessages. Anything. No internet access. I try hard restarts on my iphone. I try assigning IP addresses by MAC address. I try resetting the AE. I try renaming the WiFi name. Nothing. I can make a guest network that works (on a different IP table, btw - 172, not 192.) But other than that, no access. Grrrr.
So I have a "working" AE router where some devices successfully connect (through wifi and ethernet) and some dont' (wifi iPhone). My iPhone connects fine to my home TC. So shouldn't be anything to do with that. But I'm at a loss. I'm going to go back and restore everything and power cycle everything tonight or tomorrow night. I don't know if that will help, but it's worth a try. Lord knows it feels like I've tried everything else.
Anyone have any good ideas of where to start besides voodoo dolls and baseball bats?

I took mine back, because I was having these very same issues. We use contivity too. I was able to connect only to one of three of the servers we manage (in Europe). I couldn't connect to the servers in Asia or here in the USA.
Replaced the Airport Extreme with my trusty old d-link 624, and no issues connecting to any of the three hubs.
Otherwise, I liked the Airport Extreme, and I'll consider buying it again when and if they address this VPN issue. I work at home so its obviously a "deal breaker" for me.

  • Connecting AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express

Hi, I have a windows 7 pc connected to the internet with a dsl modem/router (technicolor TG587n v3 made by Thomson) and a Mac computer that gets connected wirelessly, but now I have purchased an AirPort Extreme and an AirPort Express and I want to connect the new AirPorts to provide a more stable connection and also to extend the wifi signal and connect a non wifi USB printer to be accessible by the other computers in the household. Would it be possible for someone to spell out all of the steps to be taken to achieve this?  Many thanks

No worries.  It was all to do with the sequence of events which happened as follows (bear in mind that I'm not a technical person).  First of all I've left the original moden/router's connection as it was, then I connected the Airport Extreme to the original modem with an ethernet cable.  After this I started Airport Utility and I chose to do a manual setup until it recognised the Extreme, once this was done I plugged the Express to a power point, then Airport Utility recognised the Express and once again I did a manual setup and voila!
The above steps are only a summary of what took place as I did get a little bit confused as the first person that attended to my enquiry was not an expert with creating networks.  The second person was amazing knowledgeable.

  • Airport Extreme and Time Machine. Despite now being officially supported, does it work?

The subject says it all. After purchasing the new tall Airport Extreme and connecting a WD 2TB drive (as I had with the earlier AE) I have yet to have a backup execute properly. It will be fine for a few days then TM will announce it's done a verification and a new backup is required. Thank goodness I have offsite backup since TM is doing absolutely SFA for me at the moment.

Now I connected this USB External Disk to the Airport so I can use it as an network disk. This is working as well. I can get it mounted and read and write on it. Nice...so far.
Now I want TIme Machine to update/compleet my latest back-up, and here the problems start.
I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.
But then I got the message; disk is full. Hmm?
Yes, because Time Machine stores backups differently when done over a network, it doesn't see the ones made while directly connected.  See the blue box in #17 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
Does anybody now how to get the old 'Backups.backupdb' connected ore recognized as the ONE which TM should compleet?
    Realistically, you have two choices:
Knowing the considerable risks, as detailed in the first link, if still you want to back up wirelessly, connect the disk to your Mac and erase it. Then connect it to your Airport and let Time Machine start fresh.
To return to backing-up while directly-connected, delete the <Computer Name>.sparsebundle from the top level of the drive.

  • I would like to buy the AirPort Extreme and I wanted to purchase a repeater or extender with that, what would that product be?

I would like to buy the AirPort Extreme and I wanted to purchase a repeater or extender with that, what would that product be?

The extender would be either another AirPort Extreme....if you want to match the performance of the "main" AirPort Extreme.....or....an AirPort Express.....which would not match the performance of the "main" AirPort Extreme.....but it would provide more wireless signal coverage.
Whether you choose the AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express to extend the signal, try to plan to connect the extender back to the "main" AirPort Extreme using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.
If you must connect the main and extending devices using wireless only, then there will be a significant performance drop on the entire network due to to the limitations of extending a network wirelessly. Unfortunately, you lose about half of the potential speed on the network when you do this.

  • Airport Extreme and Airport Express conflict and failure

I spent 2.5 hours on the phone with Apple and still could not get my Airport Extreme and Airport Express to function. My Apple TV failed as well:
    * Connected AEX through Airport Utility to internet. Airport Utility replaced my old configuration on my LinkSystem router. Green light.
    * Checked Apple TV. No connection available. Unplugged cable modem, waited 1 minute and tried again. Apple TV connected. No problem.
    * Flashing amber light on Airport Express for Airtunes. Does not show up in wireless device list. I call Apple.
    * Reset Express. Still no signal. Connect via Ethernet cable. Reconfigure. Green Light. Music works.
    * Check internet connection, in order. Apple TV fails. No connection to server.
    * Apple TV reset. No connection. No wireless network found.
    * Reset Airport Express. Reconfigure channel specifications. No connection with ATV or Airport Express.
    * Disconnect Airport Express. Reconfigure. With ATV disconnected I get Airport Express back. Green light but this time no music. Remote speakers appear on itunes, but no music is transmitted.
    * Did a total wireless reset on Extreme, and now both Express and ATV are not working.
Frustrated and dissapointed I disconnected everything put back my 5 year old Linksys router and within 15 seconds both ATV and Airport Express worked flawlessly.
How can this happen? What is wrong with this device? It is my second one in a week. The first one made no wireless connection to my Mac at all.
After sulking for hours I tried again, this time leaving the Express out of the equation and reconfiguring the ATV to take over airtunes. After a reset it did fine. Now I have a pure n signal running at 5hz. ATV works again. So does internet.
Any suggestions? Is there something I did not try?
I tried the Firewall trick, the accept all incoming connections trick, the disabling of the iv6 trick, the join a wireless connection trick, and everything else Apple Care could think of.

Maybe I was not clear enough on my post and configurations,
I had a Linksys before I purchased the airport extreme. My airport express joined the Linksys network for the purpose of airtunes. This worked flawlessly from day one.
Airport Extreme asked in the utility to take over an existing network or replace a router. If you chose this option it adopts all passwords, wpa/2 configurations for security and such.
I chose this option thinking that since it is an apple product it would take over everything and work. My airport express had origianlly been set to join my old Linksys network. Since the airport extreme took over this configuration it should work.
Apple stated many times that there seemed to be a conflict and kept asking me about the placement of my airport extreme.
My Linksys was never part of a bridge or a network within a network. It was removed before the Extreme was ever turned on.
After all the problems and hours of trying with Apple, i find it funny that all I had to do to restore eveything was plug my old Linksys back in and conect all the cables, and bam....it worked.
So what is wrong with the airport extreme, or is there something wrong with itunes 8 and its interface with the express? For whatever reason the extreme cannot make the express and my ATV work at the same time.

  • AirPort Extreme and HP LaserJet 3050 Scanning Problem

Ok, I am hoping someone can help me with this problem. I have an iMac, HP LaserJet 3050 printer and I just replaced my Netgear router with an AirPort Extreme router last night. I made the switch because I wanted to print wirelessly on my wife's laptop in addition to the hardwired iMac, and for the N standard. Prior to this, my HP 3050 was hooked up via USB to the iMac, but now it is hooked up to the USB on the AE.
Install was easy - got iMac internet running, found printer, laptop connected, and used Bonjour for Windows to get the laptop to print also. The only thing I can't do is scan with the printer anymore. Before, when I loaded a document, the HP Director would pop up and I just hit scan. Now it won't pop up, and if I open it manually, just about all of the options are not highlighted to use. Is HP Director just not looking in the right spot anymore? Don't know if that is the correct terminology since I am a recent Mac convert. I also was going to rerun the HP Director Setup software, and it asks if its a USB or Network printer, and no matter which I click, it can't find either. I figure its a network printer now as opposed to when I had it hardwired directly to the iMac. If I click the network option and manually try, it asks for printer name/path (something like that). What would I be putting in there...an IP address or something? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I love the new router and wireless printing, but I would still like to be able to scan items using the HP Director/Scan software. Thanks!!!!!!!

    Scanning is not possible.
Can I scan using my all-in-one when it is connected to the USB port of an Airport Express or Airport Extreme Base Station?

  • Airport extreme and express & apple TV

I have an airport extreme and express & apple TV. I'd like to do the following:
    1) Extend the network via the express
    2) Enable the express to stream music to the stereo from the apple TV
I am sure someone has figured this out but I can't find the answer...
    Thank you

Firstly, the easiest bit (although I don't believe you need to do this):
I would try "downgrading" the Extreme station's network type to only b/g (excluding n entirely), but I don't see that option in the radio settings anymore
You will get additional settings if you hold down the option key while browsing the radio settings drop down menu.
Moving on: Unfortunately a dropped connections seems to be a problem with umpteen causes and not only is it difficult to troubleshoot with someone in a forum it can also be made even more difficult because many problems are associated with network settings on a router that the person who is trying to help is unfamiliar with.
However you seem to be convinced your problems arise when your express is running which may narrow things down a little if correct, if not it may actually lead us away from the answer to your issue.
Is it the kind of security I'm running? Should I try WEP or... none at all?
I use WPA and have no problems (password = 8 Characters)
Should I attach it a different way? Perhaps manually set it to "participate in a WDS network" or "extend a wireless network?
I have my expresses set to participate in a WDS network, but that's because I use them for other things other than itunes, I would have thought 'join a network' would be fine.
You could check that all your devices are using independent IP addresses and all are using the same subnet. You could also check that no two devices have the same mac address, I've been told a million times this can't happen, but I've seen it. You may be wise to check these things before and after your devices have been 'kicked off the network", you may even want to write them down to see if any are changing.

  • Port Forwarding for Two Macs, one Airport Extreme and one Dynalink RTA1320

I had previously set up PortForwarding for some of my Applications on my iMac with an Ethernet connected Dynalink RTA1320 Modem by assigning myself a Static IP in the iMac`s Network Preferences.
All had been good, green smilies on Azureus when D/Ling bitorrents, Skype, WoW and Limewire all running fine.
I`ve now just recently purchased the latest Airport Extreme and 17" MacBook Pro.
Setting up a Wireless Network for the two Macs to access the internet was a breeze and both computers run fine online simultaneously.
I manually set the Ports on the MBP Applications: Skype, Azureus and Limewire to match the Ports I`d previously PortForwarded the RTA1320 to.
However, on the new MBP, Skype, Azureus and Limewire don`t seem to run too well.
I get yellow smilies on Azureus and a "Port Appears Closed" message on the NAT Test and my Skype Contacts are leaving me messages saying I always appear "off-line".
The iMac Apps still work flawlessly.
I`m guessing the problem is something to do with two Macs on a Wireless Network with one Static IP Address or what am I doing wrong?

  • I'm having a hard time setting up my external hard from with my AirPort Extreme and Time Machine Backups.

I have been using a Mac Mini with an external hard and Time Machine.  I bought an Airport Extreme and have had problem setting up the hard drive using the USB port on the Airport Extreme.  I also just recently bought a Mac Book Air and hope to have both computers back up to the external hard drive using Time Machine and Airport Extreme.  I have been using the optical drive from the Mac mini to load programs into the Mac Book Air.  I think I'm just getting confused in Finder.  I am just not seeing the hard drive.  I ended up plugging the hard drive back into the Mac Mini and that is work fine again.  How do I setting the external hard drive up to the AirPort Extreme and use for both computers?  Or at least to start with the Mac mini.

It's critical to understand that Time Machine (TM) stores backups differently between local and network drives. That would mean the TM backup on your locally attached USB hard drive will not be directly useable when it is connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). There is a way to copy a local version to a network version, but it is not fool-proof. When you do connect this drive and point TM to it, TM will start a brand new backup, leaving your existing backup as is.
If your current backup is critical to you, you may want to consider getting a second USB drive to attach to the Extreme and use your existing one as a backup ... or use TM's multi-backup process to backup to more than one destination drive alternatively.
So, at this point, you may want to make a decision on how you want to go forward to help provide a solution for you.
To directly answer your question, when you go to select a destination for a Time Machine backup, the drive(s) that show up under "Backup Disks" are those that TM already recognizes and has backed up to. Those listed under "Available Disks" are drives (either local or on the network) that TM can back up to.

  • Airport Extreme and external HDD - cannot be found under Windows (XP/Vista)

    Dear All,
I am about to loose it. I have an Airport Extreme (7.4.2), most recent version (802.11n)connected to my cable modem. Attached is a 2TB HFS+ Formated HDD. I have a number of machines. My primary machine is a Dell XPS with Vista and MacDrive installed.
Now: On my AirPort utilities through the Dell the different HDD's connected via USB (I have tried half a dozen) are all visible. They are shared and I have tried all options, e.g. "with Disk Password" etc, tried to give and deny access to guests etc.
I have tried various things incl. switching off the firewall has not been a success either. I am basically ready to buy a Mac now, but I am worried that the problem will persist for all my Windows based PC's.
Who can help with a step to step guide? tried the TCP/IP settings on the XP machine as well (entering the IP address of both Airport Extreme and Express).

    Hi!
I've got the same problem as of Friday when I upgraded my Notebook from XP to Windows 7.
It does not recognize the HDD anymore, neither on the Windows7 Notebook nor on 2 different XP- PC's.
I disabled the password functionality and removed the HDD several times, no change.
When I look to the data volumes overview in the system settings, all internal HDD's and the CD partition of the Toshiba drive are shown. The HDD partition of the drive is shown as "non allocated".
Is there any workaround to get access to the data????
    Best regards,
    Helmut

    What should I do?

Anytime you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of that hardware. Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Please post back your results.
