Airport Extreme Card missing after Leopard and Login & Keychain Update

After these updates the network prefs showed no Airport card installed, even though it had been there seconds earlier. This was buried at the bottom of a posting for a similar problem. Just wanted to make it easier for others to find.
"I'm having the same issue with an iBook G4 1.2Mz model. Having successfully installed Leopard (5 user license version) on my Macbook, I installed it on the G4. At first this worked until software update installed Login & keychain update 1.0 and Remote desktop client 3.2.1. When the iBook reset the airport extreme card wasn't there. The icon in the menu bar states No Airport card installed."
"Some users have determined that an artifact left over from Mac OS X 10.4.x interferes with wireless connections after Mac OS X 10.5 is installed. The issue can be dealt with by finding and removing the AppleAirPort2.kext file from your Extensions folder, located here:
Macintosh HD:System:Library:Extensions"
That fixed it for me.

Ok, I just installed the Login & Keychain update 1.0 from the software update and after rebooting my Airpot card does not get recognized anymore. This really ***** Apple!
Anyone else encountered this problem? Any known solution yet?!

Judging by the amount of posts it must be isolated. Mine works fine. Did you repair permissions ?
" Keychain-Administration or Privilege Issues after Upgrading to Leopard:
If after installing Leopard as an upgrade or archive and install you experience any issues with not getting mail, can't run Disk Utility, can't login as administrator, can't print or anything that entering existing User name and/or passwords requires, you are not alone and Apple is working on it now.
The fastest method of determining if you have been bitten by this, open System Preferences, click on Accounts and verify that you are the Administrator as opposed to Standard, and that the checkbox asking if you want this user to be an Administrator is checked. If you are Standard, and the box is unchecked and/or greyed out, you have a situation most likely, whether you know it or not, yet.
Further verification can be done in the Accounts window by clicking the lock to make changes, entering your name and password and being denied access.
Apple says the best thing to do right now is not to try too much voodoo and wait until later today for a solution, hopefully. I was told to close the lid and walk away until Apple calls me back.
The good news as I write this on my old reliable Pismo, is that I have a bootable Carbon Copy Cloned 10.4.10 complete back up on an OWC external FW disc. Thanks Mr. Bombich! I just hope I don't have to use it.

  • Installing AIrport Extreme card (which one? and WHERE?) in Dual 1.8 G5

I'm having an incredibly frustrating time trying to check out this (used) G5 which I thought, up until yesterday, might replace my G4 MDD. (Never mind that any topic I run a search for on the support.apple website returns NO results. Is it my antediluvian 10.3.9 and Safari 1.x--newest possible for that OS? But I digress...)
I keep running in a circle of Google search results that keep bringing me to a .pdf showing an AE card installation on a single processor G5. While not vividly clear in the illustration, the architecture seems to be different. I don't see the same "landmark" components here as in my G5. My Apple Support search difficulties have frustrated a search for a manual for this model.
Also I'm just now learning of the necessity of the Rube Goldberg-ian additional antenna that seems to be required. (As it sits, the G5 is about 3 feet away from the base station, but I guess I'll have to play along anyway and get one.) Having used an Airport card on a pre-Cambrian white iBook G3 >>>without any bloody antenna<<<, I find this too depressing to be laughable. ("...strain at a gnat and swallow a camel." --NASHVILLE, 1975; Robert Altman, dir.)
I'm under the assumption that this beast came BEFORE the late 2005 makeover that necessitates the Airport and Bluetooth combination card. Please correct if I'm wrong about this.
The card I bought on eBay is Model A1026 EMC No. 1951 (thinking an Airport Extreme Card is an Airport Extreme Card is an Airport Extreme Card...ain't that rich!)
    Computer is YM425(XXXXXX) 1.8 GHz DP/256MB 400 80GB/SD/G5200/56K
I did the installation of the Airport (after having uninformedly bought an AE card first) card on the iBook, but I can't begin to see where one goes on the G5 desktop. I don't even see the connector cable that goes in the back of the card.
I feel like my good intentions have landed me at Alice's tea table while hardly being on the cutting edge of anything. I'm a sheet of paper's width (see below) from just jettisoning this thing back to Craigslist whence I fetched it.
(Although I've long waved the banner of "Think Different" superiority, I'm beginning there's not a sheet of paper's width of difference between the respective byzantine frustrations of Planet Jobs and Planet Gates. At least I didn't make the pricey leap all the way into the MacPro rabbit hole...)
To sum up: which AE card, where does it go, what else isn't Apple telling me and are there any specific links?

Hi, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
From the details you have given, your G5 requires the Airport Extreme! card

    The installation instructions are here
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g5/apec_c.pdf
The antenna cables and connectors are pre-installed in G5s. The Airport Extreme! antenna connector, with the brass tip, is shown clearly if you click on photo #4 here

(They are the Bluetooth instructions - the photo is for identification only)
    You will need an antenna

  • Airport Extreme not found after Leopard install

I have internet, I can access my External drive connected to my Airport Extreme but when I run the Airport Utility, it can't "find" my Airport Extreme. The utility can only find my Express so I unplugged it and now it can't find anything. It's weird because everything works. I want to access the base station to make changes to ports. Can you help?

I used my Tiger-equipped iBook G4 and checked the Airport Utility from there. Sure enough, there was an available update. After I updated, everything worked just fine. Except, for some reason, I can get my Airport Drive to load on Leopard's desktop. I can live with that.

  • Airport Extreme Sharing printer to Leopard and Windows 7 via Ethernet port.

    Hello!
My home office is in a mixed environment, 1 iMac with Leopard 10.5.8, and the other iMac running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on bootcamp. Both computers are connected to the Airport Extreme (dual band version, firmware 7.4.2) via Ethernet. I attached the HP LaserJet P1006 to the Airport's usb port in order to share the printer to both platforms.
My problem is that, I got the printer installed on Win 7 by using bonjour print service v2.02 without any problem as it said works in both Ethernet and wireless, I sent a print test from win 7 successfully, then I did another test from leopard ( as I presumed it should works also), however, it says "the printer is in use". and wouldn't print. I tried restart the Airport Extreme and tried print from leopard again and that was fine but then Win 7 couldn't print.
Is there any solution for Mac + Win environment like my description? If I have 2 computers running on OS X they print perfectly well. Thanks all!
My solution for now is to physically plugging the printer to where I need to print from. I use Ethernet wired both computers is because I want to take the advantage of the gigabyte lan port for speedy files transfer between both computers.

If networking isn't working out for you, you may want to try out a swtich. Best Buy sells one by IOGEAR that allows for two USB connections to tie into one computer. So long as windows 7 can either download its own driver for the printer for basic features, or if you want to download canon's driver this solution will work. The only draw back is having to bring the laptop near the printer when you need to print.

  • Photos on SD card missing after removing and inserting card without umount

    Hi!
I am running Tiger 10.4.11 on my old Powerbook G4 12inch. I am hoping to get some help on an issue which resulted in some photos "disappearing" from an SD card. The story goes as follows:
On day 1 I plugged in the SD card using a USB card reader to my Powerbook. The SD card mounted correctly and I could see my photos (~100). I then closed the Powerbook without ejecting or umounting the SD card. The Powerbook went to sleep and I then unplugged the SD Card.
The next day I then went and took another ~30 photos with my camera using the same SD card. I could see that I had ~130 photos using my camera's built-in viewer.
I opened my Powerbook and it came out from sleep. I then inserted the SD card into the USD adapter again. The funny thing is that the Powerbook only showed the ~100 original photos still. I then tried to eject the SD card but MacOS showed an error saying that the volume is in use so can not be umounted. I then unplugged my SD card.
Following this I can no longer see the ~30 photos on my camera's display either. I have also tried various file recovery programs on Mac OS 10.4, 10.6 and Vista, none show the ~30 "missing" photos. I have also tried to look for any hidden files using terminal with "ls -al" in all the directories but with no luck. The trash can also is empty.
I am guessing that by not umounting the SD card and then inserting it again the OS was still using old FAT tables or something along those lines (speculating here). The question is, any chance of recovery or any other strategies you can suggest to help?
Thank you very much in advance and best wishes.
    Oyvind

You may have been able to try and use Disk Utility to repair file damage on
the SD card's storage; but the actual damage due to improper unmounting
in the first instance is carried over to the last. So corruption of them is likely.
There may be some third party utility for helping restore or recover data
from these camera flash memory cards, that may help. Sometimes, it
may be possible to see if the OS X Disk Utility can try to fix the files, but
that may also change them or make them unrecoverable by another kind
of utility. While I don't have experience recovering lost or erased images
from camera memory cards, I do know such software utilities for just this
purpose do exist. Initially, a few years ago, I noticed a freeware utility was
offered as well as a few shareware downloads that would work, for a fee.
Maybe that is the direction to check into, and see if you can repair and
recover the images which were subject to damage or corruption due to
the improper unmounting and remounting of the SD. These items act
just like any external hard disk drive, and need to be handled the same.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Non working AirPort Extreme Card, in both Windows and OSX?

    Hi all
Yesterday something strange happened. I was connected to the same network as always with airport, no problems everything worked perfectly in both Windows XP (bootcamp) and OS X for months.
THEN, suddenly, airport told me that it has lost connection and I just tried again, but it kept telling me that it couldn’t connect. Fortunately for me, I live in an area with lots of networks visible, and most of them without a password. I tried a few other networks, about 3 or 4, but NONE of them was working!
I tried every network found by Airport - that would be around 15 different networks, unprotected - and was very supprised to see that not a single of them was working. So clearly the problem must be at my local computer.
When I try to connect i just get 'There was an error connecting to network blahblah' and trying again doesn’t help.
I booted up in Windows XP, and i get the same error!
    Any great ideas?

Faulty Airport card would be my guess.

  • What Airport Extreme card do I need ?

Hello Group....here is the problem....my youngest boy just managed to acquire a eMac computer.
    It is a G4-1GHZ/512MB/40 G HD  and has a HD/DVD/CD - RW/56K MDM
The serial number of the eMac is G03500STPP1 (This serial number I can not relate to any searches on the internet)
I am sure it requires a Airport Extreme Card since it does have  ATI Graphics and also because I just now received an AirPort card I had ordered a week ago and found it does not fit and the PIN configuration in the slot the card goes into does not seem to match this card I purchased.....My mistake....
Anyway....I know it is a AirPort Extreme card I need but which one ?
I have looked on eBay but there seems to be several different kinds......does anyone have any idea ?
Also,if anyone has any answers to this, could yo ualso include any links to where I might find it as well ? That would be helpful for further reference should I have any trouble with this eMac.
    Thank you for your time.

Hello Group....Just got the AirPort Extreme Card in the mail and I put it into the eMac and in 10 minutes I was surfing the net.
Just incase others might be reading this with the same question about cards.....
The eMac in question is a eMac (ATI Graphics)(CTO) built in 2003
The Airport Express Card is Model A1026
If you open DVD cover and then remove the black plastic plate held there with 2 screws, you can look back into the slot that the card slides into.If you see that the slot is in two sections, that is there is a gap dividing the row of pins.....that is to accommodate the AirPort Extreme stab end as in the picture above.
If the slot you have is continues then you need a regular AirPort Card.
Oh ya....the eMac had been wiped clean and the original OS was installed so after installing the AirPort Extreme card we did about 2 hours of updates.......LOL.
Thank again to all that replied.

  • PB's Airport Extreme card not staying connected - please help diagnose

My thread Airport extremem card can't hang onto wifi signal - what to do? in the "Getting Online" forum hasn't generated a solution, so I'm trying here too.
In the past few weeks, my airport signal bounces around and randomly disconnects me. It goes from no signal (indicated) to 3 bars then bounces around. It occurred with my own Airport Extreme card (in the PB) and my Belkin router, and the library's wifi.
The problem may have started after an erase-and-install of Panther with an upgrade using the combo 10.3.9. The only security updates I see receipts or packages of are SecUpd2005-004Pan.pkg, SecUpd2007-002Pan.pkg, SecurityUpdate2004-10-27Pan.pkg.
The usual troubleshooting (Permissions, Chrons, Disk Warrior) didn't solve anything. Since first posting about this problem I've reapplied the 10.3.9 combo. I tried changing the channel on the router and setting it to Protected Mode.
    "Protected Mode
NOTE: In most situations, best performance (throughput) is achieved with Protected Mode OFF. If you are operating in an environment with HEAVY 802.11b traffic or interference, best performance may be achieved with Protected Mode ON."
I then installed Airport 4.2 update because Software Updater presented it as an option.
Until today iStumbler and MacStumbler were showing 29-35% signal strength with no noise. As of today, iStumbler is showing intermittent noise of ~14-21%, but MacStumbler is not. (It was constant when I tried channel 9 and changing the router's back to 10 made it intermittent.)
The router is serving a desktop computer via ethernet so I can't move it. I have reset the router and cable modem several times with no improvement.
Does anyone have any ideas what I can do? Thanks.

I would have come back to edit this, to say that the dropping signal problem came back since the 10.3.9 combo but I couldn't. The darn wifi signal was lost for something like 7 minutes.
The PB was sitting in exactly the same place and toggling airport on and off wouldn't reconnect it. It generated many lines in the console. Anyone know what this means?

  • HELP! How do I configure an airport extreme card , so I can set up AEX base

    Hi
I have had an iBook for a few years now with an Airport Extreme Card installed but not configured. Have just bought s/h Airport Extreme base station (cone shape) to go wireless, but am having MAJOR probs configuring the AEC to start with so I can set up the base station!
It is asking me for a Client ID, to set Airport to DHCP?? this means nothing to me...
How do I configure the card initially??
    Can anyone help, PLEEEASE??????

purplemouse, Welcome to the discussion area!
There is absolutely nothing you need to do to configure the AirPort Extreme card. After you install the card and boot the iBook, the OS recognizes the card.
It is asking me for a Client ID...
What is asking you for a client ID? This is not a normal prompt. What application are you running?

  • Airport Extreme Card

I couldn't find an answer so here is my post.
I bought an Airport Extreme card from a guy and can't get it to work in both an iMac G5 and an eMac G4. It doesn't show up in the System Profiler. The guy claims it only works with older Apple Powerbook IBM chip laptops. From what I have read, Airport Extreme cards work with any mac with an Airport Extreme port.
I need some clarity on who is right.
    Card info:
    Model no. A1026
    EMC no. 1951
if you need more info let me know, and thank you anyone that replies.

A A1026 AirPort Extreme card should work with your iMac G5 and the later eMac G4s.
It will not work with any of the Intel based Macs.

  • Airport extreme card with G4 ATI emac (1GHZ)

I've purchased a previously used airport extreme card for my emac and installed it following the instalation guide on the apple website. But with the card inserted my emac wont boot. I just get the usual apple noise then a black screen and the caps lock lights up.
The card seems to be in properly as i got the "little click feeling" you have when something goes all the way in and the antena is also connected properly.
The emac boots up fine when the card is removed.
    any ideas?

Thanks, I think i'm going to send it back as i thought that it was the card at fault but thought i'd better check all options first.
The card was correctly installed and there's nothing wrong with my emac so it must be the card.

  • Can't get security to work - Airport Extreme card and Netgear router

This apparently is not as simple an issue as I expected, so I would appreciate some help.
I just got dsl and a Netgear WGT624 wireless router to connect my wife's iBook G4 with AirPort Extreme card. I used a wired-in pc to set up the router via the web interface and can connect the iBook to the web wirelessly as long as I have security disabled. When I attempt to set WEP or WPA the connection fails.
Initially, I assumed I just was missing something in the AirPort setup, even after looking through all the documentation I could find. I upgraded yesterday from 10.3.3 to 10.3.9, just to see, but had no improvement.
If I select "WPA-PSK(TKIP)" in the router, it asks for a password, which I also then enter to login to the selected network via Internet Connect. I get "there was an error joining..."
If I select "WEP" with 64 bit and shared key options, use the same password to automatically generate the assorted keys, I am not sure what to enter to login. I have received incorrect password messages or no response at all.
I would appreciate any further direction or suggestions.
    Thanks
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.3)

One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

Choosing a password for networks that use Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)

    WPA
"WPA Personal" on the Mac corresponds to plain WPA, with a pre-shared key (PSK) and TKIP encryption, on non-Apple wireless routers. The same alphanumeric password should work on both.

  • Airport extreme card not working with leopard / G5

I just upgraded my PowerMac to leopard (G5 dual 1.8, 3 gigs of ram, 250 GB HD). I bought it new in December 2004 from apple. Previously I had been using a USB adapter to connect to my wireless internet at home (Linksys WRT54G). This device does not support leopard so I got an airport extreme card from gainsaver.com.
The Airport extreme card is configured properly as far as I know but it will only connect to my network for about 5 seconds then it drops. The USB adapter worked perfectly in the same spot and my macbook right next to it works fine as well.
    1. Could it be a bad Airport extreme card?
    2. Is this a known issue? And possibly be resolved with the 10.5.2 update?
It is a fresh Leopard install with no updates as I can not connect it to the internet to get them. Any help would be very much appreciated.

  • PowerMac G4 (FW 800) Won't Start After Installing Airport Extreme Card!

After installing an Airport Extreme Card in my G4 FW 800, the computer will not Chime or Start Up; shortly thereafter, the Fan begins to Run erratically.
Without the Airport Card installed, the CPU runs normal, with the exception of the clock needing to be reset.
Any help is Greatly Appreciated! -Nico

Hey Tom, thanks for the response. I have tried holding Command-Option-R-P down (resetting the PRAM) at startup with no avail. I have also pressed the PMU button with and without the Airport Card installed. Still no luck. I am pretty stumped. I ran a hardware check on the machine, and it has come back successful without the card.
The previous owner installed an extra internal HD and some memory. I have since installed a new PCI graphics card. Do you think these have anything to do with it?

  • Blank screen on my eMac after installing Airport Extreme Card

I just bought and installed (the right way, I checked) the Airport Extreme card on my eMac G4 desktop and at first the computer couldn't find it at all and after restarting several times, now the computer turns on but the screen is absolutely blank. I took the card out and restarted and it came on just fine. Can the card be affecting the screen? ANy help appreciated, I have no idea on this one.

This symptom is commonly seen when the Airport card is not FULLY seated into its socket. It can take a fair bit of force to do this.

  • 2 consolidation routes, one transport layer - not possible

Hello everyone, I have one DEV system and two QAS systems. Some of my development need to go to both of two systems, however some of them need to go to only one of my QAS. So I have set up two transport groups: one link to both of two QAS and another
