Alias clean up, location, etc.

So I recently created an alias by typing
alias ql='qlmanage -p "$@" &> /dev/null'
and for the life of I can't find the file that stores said alias.
Usually I can find this file, like on Fedora or other Unix based systems in a .bashrc or .cshrc file in the home directory, but there's no such file in my directory in Leopard.
Any help would be appreciated in determining where these aliases are stored.

An alias command that you simply type at a shell prompt is not stored in a file. It is stored in the memory space of the current instance of the shell. If you want the alias created for each shell instance then you put the alias command in the startup profile for your shell. e.g. .bashrc or .cshrc. Which you use depends on which shell you use and how you start the shell. By default, Terminal.app creates a bash "login" shell, so the appropriate profile should be named .bash_profile -- see the bash man page for details. If you want a .bash_profile, you have to create one.

Want to clean up HD etc to sell iMac

Hello, I know there are various threads about this and if one answers my direct questions please let me know.
We have 2 business 20" iMac (~2008) that we will be selling. I would like to clean out the HD EXCEPT for certain programs. So I do not want to clean out completely etc.
One tends to bog down at times and I am afraid I may have downloaded something I shouldn't have. I would like to do what ever I need to do to clean this up.
* Preferably free
I just do not want to start deleteing and cleaning and mess something up. They both have been upgraded to Maverick

If it's only applications that you want to retain, the first step is to create a brand new user in System Preferences - Users and Groups. Make it an administrative user. (Make a note of the name and password and pass it on to the new owner.)
Now log out and log back in as that user. Again in Users and Groups, delete all other old users. That should clear out a lot of space.
To delete certain applications, first check whether there are "uninstall" utilities for them. If not, you can usually just drag them to the trash (and empty the trash afterwards). Some preference files, etc, will be left behind, but they're usually not very large.
Bear in mind that in most circumstances, it's much better to completely wipe/reformat the drive before you sell a computer - both for your sake (you don't want a new owner to be able to recover your old files) and for theirs (who knows what malware/spyware may exist on a computer that someone sells you).

Favicons erased every time i clean cache, cookies, etc,

every time I run the computer optimization software, which cleans registry, cache, etc., all firefox bookmarks favicons get erased and I have to rebuild them. why are they erased? in google chrome they dont get erased

Use the build-in Firefox "Clear Recent History" instead to avoid that.

I'm experiencing the same problem with my Deskjet 960c and Vista OS. I really want to know how to clean the ink cartridges by using the Toolbox, which is inaccessible with Vista. The print quality has not improved with newly store bought HP ink cartridges, so I think they need to be cleaned. Hopefully someone has a solution to this issue.

Iphone 4S newly updated to iOS8, keeps popping up window notifying me of things I turned off (cell usage, location, etc) to preserve battery life. Is there any way to make them stop telling me every time I use the affected apps?

I have finally taken the step of updating my iPhone 4S to iOS8 after learning the hard way last update to wait for the bugs to be worked out. I was horrified to find that the battery was being sucked dry in no time at all. After finding a great article posted elsewhere on the apple forums, I went through and turned off all unnecessary options involving the use of cell data, location services and background refreshing. My battery life has thankfully returned to what it was before the update.
HOWEVER, now, every time I open an app for which I turned these things off, the window informing me of that pops up.   I am getting really irritated by this as I made all of these decisions deliberately and am well aware that I may need to go back and change them in order to activate certain capabilities when I want to use them. I had done the same thing with the last iOS, but there were far fewer that needed to be turned off and the battery life seemed to be less affected by those that I left on so it was not the annoyance it has become now.
Is there any way to make the phone stop presenting me with these idiot messages?   TIA

I would like to know if anyone else is experiencing issues related to location services settings. Ie; they are on but maps cannot determine location etc.

I recently experienced an issue on my ipad2 related to location services. While connected to a wifi network, I found that apps requiring location services would not work properly and I would receive a pop up notice asking me to turn on location services. For example, the maps app would display a pop up stating "cannot determine location". My NHL gamecenter app would not allow me to watch live feeds; a pop up advised me to turn on location services. In each case, location services was in fact on.
I checked my settings, shut down the apps, restarted them, shut down the iPad and rebooted it to no avail. The internet connection was working fine as best as I could determine. The wifi network was at a guest home and the router was recently replaced. I returned to my home wifi and everything worked fine. The next day, I returned to the guest Internet connection and everything seemed to work once again. However, while watching a NHL game, during the last seconds of an overtime shoot out, I lost video and it was attributed once again to location services being disabled. Of course I checked and nothing in my settings had been altered. I went to my iPhone (3GS) and pulled up the gamecenter app and was able to watch the end of the game( via wifi connection...same network).
So, I am puzzled as to what could be causing this problem. If anyone else is having similar issues, I would like to know as well as if there are any solutions or feedback from Apple regarding this type of problem.....Dave.

As the King says, if your friends wifi router was relatively new, it likely has not been picked up by Apple's location based information database system and thus there is no location information associated with it. So your iPad had no way of getting its location.
The wifi location databases are traditionally updated by wardriving - literally companies employ people to drive around sniffing out active wifi signals and associating an approximate location to it. Some companies also have web sites to submit that information if owners wish to (Apple does not seem to have one though), and the various companies with wifi location databases buy and sell their information. Bottom line is though, it can take weeks, months or sometimes even longer for a residential router to get picked up - depends on where you live (more rural, likely the longer time it takes).
When I moved from VA to NC it took up to 6 months for mine to reflect my new location (I checked it once the week I moved in, and then periodically thereafter, and it finally was getting it right after about 6 months) and I live in a pretty densley populated area (triangle NC).

How to FULLY remove metadata (author, file location, etc) of a PDF to really make it anonymous?

Here is an example: when creating a PDF from, e.g., using TextEdit and "Print > Save as PDF",
the dialog box gives the possibility to change or remove the authors.
However, other informations such as the location of the file are written in the PDF file,
and this can be an easy way to identify the author.

you can see this location (which display the full path and, e.g., your login if it is used in the path).
Location is just one example and perhaps there are other problems like that (?)
So, is there a robust way to remove ALL the metadata from a PDF file *** indepently on how it was generated *** ?

Best way if you have a large screen is to use command shift 4 and draw a box around the PDF image, a image file appears on your desktop.
Open that in the free LibreOffice drawing (several pages if needed) and then Print > PDF
No hidden meta data there.

Programatically setting preferences - cache locations etc.

I've had a little look around but can't seem to find the answer to this question. I'd like to have a way of defining, at a machine level, the location for After Effects (and for that matter, Premiere and other Adobe apps') cache directories.
We have NFS mounted home directories with soft and hard quotas and every time the AE prefs get munged, users must remember to change these preferences or risk hitting their quota limit, which causes all manner of problems.
Since the introduction of CS5.5, disk cache is enabled by default, which is obviously a good thing for performance, but ideally, we'd be able to alert the user to the status of the cache directories at every launch of the application and provide an easy way to set the location to a local disk, pre-populating say /Users/Shared/Adobe/Caches or similar.
In the preferences file for AE CS6 (Adobe After Effects 11.0-x64 Prefs) there seems to be one path under the key ["Disk Cache Controls"] "Folder 6" but in the application iteself, there are other values, presumably for the Dynamic Link features of all the apps, which tend to point to a directory under ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe/Common (though quite why potentially massive media files are stored under users' preferences folders is beyond me.)
Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

The call I placed, it's originating in Tequesta, which is obvious.
How accurate are these locations? The phone is an old dinosaur/flip phone.

I guess first of all, why would it matter.
As to where it originated, that gives the location of the tower which was used to originate the call. Verizon has pretty accurate information on where their towers are located.

Recommended software for cleaning unwanted files, etc...

I am currently running the latest Yosemite(V10.10.2). My Mac Desktop and Laptop are running slow. I have never tried to run a cleaning software for either, mainly because I'm confused to which one best works, as their is so many out there claiming they are the best. Can someone, please recommend a good software that will speed up both my Macs?

NONE of them. The Mac does not accumulate filth.
They do not work, they cause problems, and some users find they need to re-install Mac OS X because "cleaners" throw away important System files.
Any slowness should be solved by looking at the root causes, and addressing them directly. Running third-party software you download will NOT improve your Mac. If such a thing were helpful, it would already be included in the box with a new Mac. (and it is not.)
Etrecheck is a reporting tool that allows the examination a lot of potential problem areas all at once. Sometimes this turns up the issues quickly and easily. Sometimes more "industrial strength" diagnostic tools are needed, such as Linc Davis scripts or System log lists.

Selling MacBook - How do I clean off data etc

Hi, I've just upgraded from a MacBook to MacBook Pro (which I am loving) so am selling my MacBook. I need to obviously wipe off all the data (I assume both my personal files and any software etc). Can anyone recommend the best way to do this? I have backed everything up so I don't know if there is just some easy factory default setting.
Would appreciate any assistance.

Try the dvds that came with you Macbook Pro, I doubt they will work but it's worth a try.
I've yet to hear of folks not having any luck getting replacement discs from Apple, even with iBooks from 2004. Buying discs on eBay is a risky business as the gray discs are *machine specific* and will only work on the Mac with which they are bundled and possibly with another machine that has identical hardware.
A retail copy of Tiger won't work on any MacBook. The retail version of Tiger only works on PowerPC Macs. Leopard will work on some MacBooks (those manufactured before January of 2009) but not on all of them.
