Align Table of Contents

Hi,
I'm having a problem aligning the table of contents I created.  The page numbers don't seem to be right aligning.
The only page numbers that seem to do that are the 1's.  All the other numbers, 3's, 4's, etc all seem to right align
except for the 1's.
Any ideas...?
Thanks!

In most typefaces, the 1 is narrower than other digits. In some typefaces it will appear very slightly less right-aligned. Is that what you're seeing, or is it off by more than just a tiny bit?
Any chance you could post a screencap?

  • Right align all numbers in table of contents

One of the entries in my table of contents has the page number right beside the entry. The rest of the page numbers are right aligned.
When I "Show Invisibles", an arrow is in the single space between the entry and the page number. For the remaining entries, it is in the middle of the page.
I've tried redoing the heading on the page in question about 100 times. I cannot figure out what is different about that heading that is screwing the ToC up.
    Thanks.

    Hey
I'm really struggling with my pages as I have created a table of contents for iWork09 but it's defaulted for the pages numbers to sit directly after the chapter rather than face the opposing side like your picture shows. I tried changing the tabs and then the text layout from left to across the page but all it does it push the numbering to the next line (for the longer titles) and push the numbers across (for the shorter named titles). I can't even get the lines to appear so that the chapter title appears, then some dots leading to the number. Any ideas?

  • Aligning chapter numbers in table of contents

    Hello,
In tables of contents, Pages doesn't align the chapter numbers correctly.  I get this (left alignment) :
    8.
    9.
    10.
and I need this (alignment on decimal point) :
      8.
      9.
    10.
Do you know how to do it ?  Thanks in advance.

If that is the beginning of the line you will have a problem as you need to use an inset decimal or right hand tab and precede the text with a Tab.
You may have to export the T.O.C. as text, bring it back in and format it manually.

  • How best to include additional on-page info (*as well as*) page numbers in a Table of Contents?

    Hi all -
I'm creating a directory / listings document. At the end of the publication, I need to create a "quick reference" section - with an alphabetised listing of each entry, some key info from each entry, and the page number for each entry.
I've created a unique paragraph style for each of the lines that I need to include here - so the Table of Contents is picking them up successfully.
However, I'm struggling to style the outputs of the Table of Contents the way I need: I want a tab between each of the included paragraph styles that are returned for each entry, and then a line return at the end.
    So…
First Hotel name -> Star Rating -> Number of Bedrooms -> etc etc
Second Hotel name -> Star Rating -> Number of Bedrooms -> etc etc
    Instead of…
    First Hotel name
    Star Rating
      Number of Bedrooms
       etc
    Second Hotel name
    Star Rating
      Number of Bedrooms
       etc
    Any suggestions?
One important point to note - I'm using CS5.5… an upgrade is in my future, but I want to finish this project first! (Don't want to switch mid-stream.)
    Thanks!

Thanks. I went there and bulleted align by decimal, but it didn't work on the page. For one thing, when I highlight that page, for some weird reason the numbers from 9 up DO NOT HIGHLIGHT. !  Only the text following those numbers highlight, altho all the other numbers and text following 9 highlight!
Don't know why it would have this weird situation! Seems like a flaw in the design.
I tried moving the little blue cursors above, but I'd need to move it half a step either way to bring those one-digit number decimals in alignment with the rest. For some reason the cursors will ONLY move a full step! So they're out of alignment no matter what I do. Darn!

  • Right-Indenting the last paragraph line in a Table Of Contents entry

    Hi,
    I'm using CS4 In Design.
I'm trying to format the paragraph styles for my Table of Contents.
I have the tab leaders working, everything looks good except that I have entries that have multiple lines, and I can't find a way to format the TOC paragraphs so that the lines BEFORE the last line are right-indented more than the last line (which of course contains the tab leads and page number).
I'd like to not have to go into my text and manually add Right Index Tabs in every heading instance that will be pulled into the TOC.
    Thanks,
    Robert

    > How DOES one set last lines that don't leave room for leaders?
One manually breaks the line short (or lives with no leaders) using a
shift-return. I usually finesse TOCs after I think the client is mostly
    done with correcting.
    > I now note that some of my neat page numbers are nudged to the right...
I'm not sure what that means. If you're using a right-aligned tab (or
two tabs, if you want to right-align the ends of the leaders) your
numbers should right-align on the tab setting. Exactly. Nothing should
    be "nudged to the right".

  • Table of Content with page number for entire pdf

    Hi
We need to merge dynamic pdf with n number of static pdf.
The output of the generated pdf has one of the page called Table Of Content with page number.
For this we have created following process
We created a form using Adobe livecycle form designer to populates input data(xml).
We created process to generate dynamic pdf .
We have static pdf's in some folder location(Eg:C:\temp)
We created xsl to generate DDX to merge Dynamic pdf with static pdf's by using an assembler operation in the Process
There are number of static specification pdf's  inserted in between of dynamic pdf using logic in xsl.
We used bookmark option in xsl for creating table of content .
While invoking the process we are able to generate the correct merged pdf with some unformatted page of table of content
We can explain better in the following way where we are actually facing a challenge:
We need a table of content in the below mentioned format:
                                                                                                                 PAGE
    MAIN DESCRIPTION                                                                                    n
    ID1             NAME1            DESCRIPTION   1                                              m
    ID2POK       NAME2            DESCRIPTION   2                                              m
    FDJKHJG
    ID3             NAME3            DESCRIPTION   3                                              m
    MAIN DESCRIPTION2                                                                                 n
    ID3            NAME3            DESCRIPTION   5                                               m
    ID4            NAME4            DESCRIPTION   4                                               m
    ID5            NAME5            DESCRIPTION   5                                               m
Since the pdf merging and numbering is done  using ddx at runtime, page number tag is not there in xml and  therefore the toc page cannot be populated at the time of form design.
The issue we are facing is that, by using ddx script we are not able to align id,name, description in  table of content in proper manner. We want to wrap particular id ,name and description in their respective columns.
Currently, we are getting the below mentioned result which is not in a proper format.
                                                                                                               PAGE
    MAIN DESCRIPTION                                                                                n
    ID1HDSJHJDHFDJFHD            NAME1FDJFHDJH           DESCRIP
    TION 1                                                                                                    m
    ID2POKLFDJKHJG           NAME2FDJKFJDKFJKD            DESCRI
    PTION   2                                                                                                m
    ID3            NAME3            DESCRIPTION   3                                             m
Note: Page numbering has been done only after merging all the pdf(Dynamic and static) using ddx  instead of the adobe livecycle form designer.
Is there any solution to resolve the formatting issue or any other option to create table of content dynamically ?

    Hi SaCvP,
According to your description, you want to display the table of contents with page number in SSRS 2014.
In Reporting Services, the global variable PageNumber or Totalpages can be only used in the page header and page footer. In your scenario, you can create a table of content using document map, but we can’t specify the expression with PageNumber or Totalpages.
So your requirement can’t be achieved currently.
    Reference:
Create a Document Map (Report Builder and SSRS)
If you have any question, please feel free to ask.

  • Table of contents: Style and numbering

    Hi all,
I've already found some information about the page numbers in the Toc here on the forum, so thank you for posting that.
What I can't find is this: I've got my table of contents with the page numbers aligned to the right side. The toc consists all the titles I've used in my Pages document. In this document I gave these titles different numbers, i.e. I've used the styles for creating a list. So in my document I have something like this:
    1 Food
    1 1 Vegetables
    1 1 1 Carrots
    text about carrots
    1 1 2 Tomatoes
    text
    1 2 Fruit
    1 2 1 Apples
    text about apples
    1 2 2 Lemons
    text about lemmons
    2 Drinks
    2 1 Hot drinks
    2 1 2 Coffee
    text..
I don't want to start a discussion about wheter or not a tomato is a fruit or a veg . I would like to know how i get these numbers in my Toc ? Right now I have this toc :
    Food 1
    Vegetables 1
    Carrots 1
    Tomatoes 2
    Fruit 3
    Apples 3
    Lemons 4
    Drinks 5
    Hot drinks 5
    Coffee 6
But I want something like this :
    1 Food 1
    1 1 Vegetables 1
    1 1 1 Carrots 1
    1 1 2 Tomatoes 2
    1 2 Fruit 3
    1 2 1 Apples 3
    1 2 2 Lemons 4
    2 Drinks 5
    2 1 Hot drinks 5
    2 1 2 Coffee 6
Can somebody show me how to do this ? And also, is there a possibility of changing the text layout in this Toc according to the layout I've used for these titles in my Pages document ?

Actually, yes, it was tedious, but I gave the numbering in the heading styles a fair go. tried my own indented numbering styles. When the doc becomes large enough, the auto-numbering breaks. I write fairly intense technical docs, with legal (or tiered) numbering, I cannot afford either the incorrect numbering, or the ToC not showing the numbered heading.
Typing the number into the heading, and using say 4 heading styles for four level of detail (tiers), works well. But do not start until the doc is fairly stable, and thus the numbers do not change. These numbers show up in the ToC very nicely. You can use didferent ToC Heading styles and make that look good as well.
And, yes, I have requested the feature. What I really want is the heading sytle to remember the indent/tier level and keep track of it; and not get lost in a large doc; THEN showing that number in the ToC.
    Cheers

  • Table of Contents page numbers on next line (solution won't work!)

I'm having this problem where the page number for my item in the table of contents appears on the next line instead of allt he way to the right on the same line. Example:
    Chapter 1 . . . . . . . . . . . .
    4
    instead of
    Chapter 1 . . . . . . . . . . . .4
A solution has already been posted, but it won't work for me:
"This is simple to solve. Select the TOC entry and show the text inspector. There press the "Tab" button for the tabulator seetings. At the bottom is a list of tab stops. Select the last one with a double click and set the number to a slight lower number then the width of your TOC area is. Make sure the tab stop is for right aligning by activating the button on the right side of the tab stop list (but I think it is already). Do that for all TOC levels and don't forget to save the styles." -Frank
When I try to do this, I type my desired tab stop in (5 in, incidentally) and then as soon as I click outside the field it reverts to the default, which is the full width of my column.
Anyone know why this might be? Thank you!

Just to be clear, are you trying to set you tab stop at the 5 inch mark? What is your left margin setting? I believe the tab setting is the distance from the left margin, not the actual point along the paper width. Since you said in an earlier post that you are working on a booklet, I thought perhaps your left margin + 5 may be exceeding the allowable width inside your margins.

  • Table of Contents Wrong Order

    Hi there,
Can anyone help me out with this issue? I have a table of contents set up here, but the subtitles are showing above the Chapter titles instead of below.
I given them the appropriate levels-Units(level1), Chapters(level2), Subtitles (level3). So I'm not sure why they are appearing in the wrong order. For example, 4.1 should be right under Chapter 4 before 4.2.
    Please advise,
    Thank you!

    Thanks Peter!
Does this mean that I need to move the Chapter titles to the right so they are at least aligned or more to the left than the subtitles? Is there another way to do this?
I believe below photo shows the layout concern you mentioned.

  • Table of Contents Order Question

I have a table of contents set up in my document with a Section Header and underneath that the page number followed by the page title.
    Example:
    ELEPHANT
    3  PEANUTS
The problem is that on right handed pages it puts the Section Header BELOW the page number and title. This only happens on right handed pages. I did notice that if the text box for the Section Header covers the whole page, then it lists it correctly, but then I have to add a tab and remove it after in the TOC. Any thoughts/ideas? Thanks!

I'm not sure if this is your problem, but it sounds like it could be. TOC is sensitive to frame placement. ID starts in the upper left corner and looks for frames going down the page (if I remember this correctly, it's pretty complex), then will read the content in that frame vertically in each column before moving to the next frame. Once all frames at a given x-coordinate are found, ID will look to the right and start again.
It's the x/y coordinate of the text inset of the upper left corner of the frame that governs the order, with the x-coordinate taking precedence (I think), and text alignment is not considered, so right-aligned text in the right column of a page can get picked up first if the frame is extended toward the left edge of the page far enough.

  • Table of Contents font issue

I have been having issue with font display in Table of Contents. Please take a look:
    In iBooks Author:
In iBook when previewed, it is partially chopped off!
I can only got the font to display right when scale to a size like 36. There is no option to increase the text box height, moving the text up or down, or move to front does not solve the issue.
    What do you think? Thanks!

Thanks for the help. But it does not work. There is no text box (only 2 points on side of text). The text height cannot be changed.
The text alignment is default to be top, but tried centre and bottom does not change anything (seems like there is no text box).

  • Table of Contents for a hymnal

I am using Indesign CC (Creative Cloud).  We are putting together a hymnal supplement for a church hymnal. Instead of page numbers, there is a reference number for each hymn. This eases confusion with the congregant not having to decide if the number that is announced is a  hymn number or a page number.
I set up the hymn titles with 2 paragraphs: one is the hymn reference number (e.g., 2001, 2002, 2003, …); the 2nd paragraph is the hymn title. The hymn reference number paragraph style has the alignment of "Away from spine" so that the hymn references are left-most on left-hand (even) pages and right-most on right-hand pages. Note: There can be more than one hymn or sung acclamation on a given page.
Now I want to create a Table of Contents that has both the reference number and the hymn title. I find that I cannot do this because I am using 2 paragraph styles. However, if I combine both the hymn reference number and the hymn title into one paragraph, then I cannot use the alignment of "Away from spine".
What I want the pages to look like are are something like:
    Page 2 (even page):
         2001     Hymn title 1
         2002     Hymn title 2
    Page 3 (odd page):
         Hymn title 3     2003
         Hymn title 4     2004
         Hymn title 5     2005
Then, this is what I would like the Table of Contents to look like:
         2001     Hymn title 1
         2002     Hymn title 2
         2003     Hymn title 3
         2004     Hymn title 4
         2005     Hymn title 5
I already looked at the forum entry for:
         http://forums.adobe.com/message/5947413#5947413
In a book how can I combine two lines of a chapter title into one TOC entry?
Any ideas on how I could procede?

Thank you for your quick response. I have been trying several methods over the last few days.
Method 1: I created anchored text objects (with an attribute on non-printing), which I use to place notes in the outside margins of the text frames. I then type the hymn number and the hymn title into the note, with a tab character betweeen the two of them. Each object is anchored at the end of the text, just before the paragraph mark. I have the following paragraph styles in my Table of Contents:
Mass settings          (major header)               Heading level 1
Hymn information     (intermediate header)     Heading level 2
When I generate the table of contents, the problem is that the ordering is wrong. This is because anchored objects have a ordering  that is established when one creates the object. However, I could not find how I could re-order the order of the objects. From some other forum items I read, I discovered that this ordering is not the same at that of the objects in the the layers palette.
How can one change the ordering of the anchored objects, so that they occur in the correct order in the Table of Contents.
Method 2: How does one use an "automatic text variable" to select a portion of the text from a preceding paragraph? I would like to try this method when I get a chance.

  • Table of Contents - Title style

    Hi there,
some issues (for me) when I'm trying to give a paragraph style to the TITLE within a Table of Contents. This is my starting point:
Then I select "indice_TOC" for the title style and I "save the style" (replacing previuos style):
Then I close the panel but when I reopen the TOC I find the title style has not been saved:
The only way to get the saved style is to manage styles from "Table of Contents Styles". Yes, I know, this is a possible workaround but the problem is that I can save any other changement in this window save (sic!) the title style. Please give a look and let me know where I'm wrong.
    Thanks, K.

Rh is using Word's default TOC style.
If you are generating using the project's CSS, or any other CSS, then you are stuck with fixing each document.
If you generate to a Word template, then open the template and modify the TOC style to be left aligned. I just tried it and it works fine.

  • Designing a Table of Content

This is one area that I believe needs to be expanded. I have CS5.5 and there is a very small amount of options when designing a Table of Contents. I can't get it to look the way I want but I can get so close. Here is what I'm looking for and maybe you can help me find the right code.
    Title__________________________________1-1
    Next Title______________________________1-2
    Third Title______________________________1-3
I have individual - stand-alone documents (each being a separate "chapter" of a whole document). What I've been able to accomplish so far is I've got the page numbers to align on the right hand side but I can’t get that “1-“ or “2-“ chapter number or the underline that goes from the end of the page title to the page number. I’ve seen underlines like this in many documents so it can’t be that obscure that they wouldn’t add that option in this program. I have to be missing something.
    Thanks,
    Kyle

Lets start with the numbers. How is th echapter number making it onto the document pages? is it a section prefix entered into the Numbering & Section dialog, or something else? A section prefix included in the page number should find its way into the TOC without doing anything special at all.
Now for the underline. Any character can be underlined. Just select it and go to Underline Options and turn it on. In this case what you are trying to do is apply that underline to all the tabs, and there are actually two ways to do this automatically, but both require you to create a character style that is nothing more than turning on the underline and setting a weight, stroke type and offset for it. You can use a solid line, dashed, dotted, etc., for this custom underline which means you can get pretty much any look you want.
The first method is to simply apply the style to the tab in the TOC dialog -- you have the opprotunity to apply a character style to whatever you've entered into the "Between Entry and Number" field by choosing a style in the next field to the right (you need to have the additional options showing). This will push that underline tight up against the text on both ends, though, and I like a little bit of breathing space, so I use the second method.
In my method you add some space on either side of your tab (thin space, sixth space, your choice) in the field, and do not apply a style there. Instead, create a paragraph style for the lisitngs (which you should do anyway), then add a nested style like this: None up to 1 tab (or right indent tab, if you've used that) character, your new underline style through 1 character. This leaves the spaces on either side without the underline as well as the listing text and numbers. You can, of course, add another character style at the end to change the numbers, too, if you like, for example to bold or italic. I use this method to make forms for printing with lines where people need to write something. Adjusting the tabs adjusts the length of the lines.
