Table of contents: Style and numbering

Hi all,
I've already found some information about the page numbers in the Toc here on the forum, so thank you for posting that.
What I can't find is this: I've got my table of contents with the page numbers aligned to the right side. The toc consists all the titles I've used in my Pages document. In this document I gave these titles different numbers, i.e. I've used the styles for creating a list. So in my document I have something like this:
1 Food
1 1 Vegetables
1 1 1 Carrots
text about carrots
1 1 2 Tomatoes
text
1 2 Fruit
1 2 1 Apples
text about apples
1 2 2 Lemons
text about lemmons
2 Drinks
2 1 Hot drinks
2 1 2 Coffee
text..
I don't want to start a discussion about wheter or not a tomato is a fruit or a veg . I would like to know how i get these numbers in my Toc ? Right now I have this toc :
Food 1
Vegetables 1
Carrots 1
Tomatoes 2
Fruit 3
Apples 3
Lemons 4
Drinks 5
Hot drinks 5
Coffee 6
But I want something like this :
1 Food 1
1 1 Vegetables 1
1 1 1 Carrots 1
1 1 2 Tomatoes 2
1 2 Fruit 3
1 2 1 Apples 3
1 2 2 Lemons 4
2 Drinks 5
2 1 Hot drinks 5
2 1 2 Coffee 6
Can somebody show me how to do this ? And also, is there a possibility of changing the text layout in this Toc according to the layout I've used for these titles in my Pages document ?

Actually, yes, it was tedious, but I gave the numbering in the heading styles a fair go. tried my own indented numbering styles. When the doc becomes large enough, the auto-numbering breaks. I write fairly intense technical docs, with legal (or tiered) numbering, I cannot afford either the incorrect numbering, or the ToC not showing the numbered heading.
Typing the number into the heading, and using say 4 heading styles for four level of detail (tiers), works well. But do not start until the doc is fairly stable, and thus the numbers do not change. These numbers show up in the ToC very nicely. You can use didferent ToC Heading styles and make that look good as well.
And, yes, I have requested the feature. What I really want is the heading sytle to remember the indent/tier level and keep track of it; and not get lost in a large doc; THEN showing that number in the ToC.
Cheers

  • Table of Contents Styles

In the past I've successfully created tables of contents. I created the necessary styles just as I would any other style. I just now noticed a menu item called table of contents styles under Layouts. What's this for? Why is it necessary?

TOC styles are for creating TOCs based on your Paragraph Style.
You have to structure you document complete with paragraph and character styles (which should be done anyway).
Create for each level entry in the TOC a different TOC paragraph style (these are normal Paragraph Styles used for the TOC).
Define a TOC style, where you choose the Paragraph Style which is drawn into the TOC and choose the level and which TOC paragraph style will be used.
You have a great benefit for using these styles:
Changes in the document are reflected automatically (after actualization) in the TOC.
    Automatic page numbers.
Several TOC in one document (Chapters, Tables, Images, Mathematical or Chemical Forms, etc.)

  • Styles And numbering : bug or not bug?

I'm migrating from word to pages and I am experiencing a strange behavior in styles and titles numbering in Pages 09 (French versionà
Based on what I have observed, the link between styles and numbering seems to be broken: if you apply a certain numbering style to a title style, it will not be applied correctly. Only one numbering style seems to be memorized amongst the differents styles.
Here are some simple steps to reproduce what I observed:
    -Open pages
-Create a new document a select "Harvard Structure" from the templates list (this is a template that includes numbering). You get a document with different kind of numberings (A. 1. (1)) : everything's all right for now
-Display the styles pane and you will see that only one kind of numbering is memorized in the stylesheet : although the "Title 3" is numbered with 1.,2.,3. in the template the title style is memorized as being numbered with I. II. III.
Any attempt to apply different numberings styles to the different styles will not work... Did I miss something in the documentation?
PS : sorry for the duplicate question (I posted accidentally the first question when it was not finished in the Pages08 section)

If I understand well, nothing odd, nothing wrong.
You are just fooled by the two meanings of the word "style".
When you apply the style Harvard to a list, you aren't using the 'named style Harvard'
It's the same thing than the one with the menu item "Bold" which apply the Bold style
and the 'named style Emphasis" (Accentuation in French).

  • Microsoft Word-Table of Contents-Update Page Numbers

I am having trouble updating my page numbers within the Table of Contents in a Microsoft Word document. On a Windows machine, I would click to the left of the table and then click F9. On an Apple, that adjusts the brightness of the screen or modifies the screen if I accompany the F9 with the Apple or Function button. Does anyone know how to update the page numbers without creating a new Table of Contents?
    Lisa

In Mac OSX it is possible to change or create keyboard shortcuts for all applications as well as the system itself.
Go to +System Preferences > Keyboard and Mouse > Keyboard shortcuts+
Select the menu item for whatever application, in this case Dock, Exposé and Dashboard, click on the keyboard shortcut and change it to whatever you would like.
It will then work the next time you launch the application. If it is a menu item the name of the shortcut must match the menu name exactly.

  • Table of Contents - Styles not ordering as I want them to

    Hi
This has been driving me crazy! Hopefully someone can help. I have set up a table of contents with 3 styles as so:
    1. Chapter heading
         2. Page title (with page number)
              3. Sub or item headings (from each page where relevant)
However the "item" headings Keep appearing on the line above the page heading. I want them to appear after/below so they clearly illustrate the fact that those are items on that particular page. As far as I can tell I have nothing  ticked or checked in the TOC paragraph styles that shouldn't be.
Below is a screenshot of the TOC's where I've marked examples of how this is appearing. Only marked a few but oviously this continues through the list.
If anyone could explain where I'm going wrong it would be most appreciated.... My deadline is looming!
    Cheers

    Hi Peter
Thank you so much for this. That's worked!
I had the page titles on the top right of each page (see attached). I've just run through the deck and moved all page titles to the left and now it works. You're a godsend!
For future reference though, is there any way around this? I often work with architectural drawings inserted into the pages and the books are often bound on the left edge so, to me, it feels more easy on the eye to have the page title top right. I also thought that the heirarchy in the TOC's "Include Paragraph Style" Pane would govern this regardless of it's placement on the page.
Either way, thanks for your help. First time using the forum and I'm very impressed.
    Cheers

  • Table of Contents Style Issue

I am a new user of InDesign 5 and am working with a Table of Contents that was prepared for me in my office.  I have updated my text and inserted a few pages into my document and now have some odd formatting showing up in the TOC.  I have deleted my text, added it back in, applied different styles and checked to be sure that I don't have any overrides applied.  The issue is that the leader (....) seems not to be showing up for about 1/4 of my TOC entries.  Any help would be appreciated.
Grainy (sorry) Image below (note items: Filter 4, Import 11, Export 21 as examples)
    Thanks!

    jclarke2,
You got verify all the styles envolved.
    Try first verify this:
For each style included has to be similar like this example. The "entry style" can't be "[Same style]" like on the pic. You have to create one style and verify if don't have any tag besides the leader.
    Good luck!

  • Table of Contents links and hyperlinks lose accuracy in FP past 5 pages?

I've come up dry searching for any mention of this bug
    anywhere.
We've got Word documents that have a table of contents (TOC
created dynamically in word, using the standard "Heading" style
method.) When we convert these to Flashpaper SWFs, about 50% of the
TOC links don't work - they go sort of nearby spots in the
document, but bring you to a spot off by half a page or more. The
links to spots in the first 4-5 pages work ok, but TOC links that
go deeper into the doc - from 5 to 20 pages in - those are off by a
half page to a page. The working TOC links in Word or in PDF
versions of the doc take you directly to the right spot.
The "outline" option in flashpaper also fails - the outline
links past 5 pages or so are innacurate just like the in-document
    links.
According the the (scanty) documentation for Flashpaper,
Heading/Outlines, etc. are supposed to work fine and get converted
    into the SWF.
I've already tried creating fresh example files, to make sure
it isn't a problem with sloppy Word formatting, extra Headings,
etc. - no dice. I still get TOC and outline links that fail to work
in many cases. They mostly fail for things that jump to spots after
5-6 pages into the doc. But if I convert these same docs to PDFs,
the PDF bookmarks and TOC links and hyperlinks work perfectly.
We've also tried using Hyperlinks in Word to create "pretend"
Table of Contents (not dynamic, but we're desperate), and we find
that those hyperlinks that go past 5 or 6 pages into the 20 page
doc lose their acuracy also - they are a half to a full page off.
We already tried the method of saving the word docs as HTML
then converting to FP(suggested within this board) but that did not
    improve things.
    Thanks in advance.
    - Chris

We solved our issue. In our case we have Word 2007, but our
client is still on Word 2003 so our Word document was originally
created in Word 2007 and then converted by Word 2007 into the Word
2003 format. It appears that we were having these problems because
we were running Flashpaper on the coverted Word document. A
document converted this way is internally different than a document
created by the Word 2003 application.
To fix the problem we downloaded the Word 2003 application,
created a new Word 2003 document, copy and pasted the contents of
the converted Word document into the document created on Word 2003,
and then ran Flashpaper on the new Word 2003 document. Problem
    solved.

  • Table of Contents with Page Numbering in bi-fold brochure?

I am creating a bi-fold brochure that is a total of 10 printed pages front to back.
Is it possible to create a table of contents on the inside cover of the brochure, and have it automatically page number the other pages of the brochure, or is this only possible in the more high-end desktop publishing programs?
Thanks very much in advance for your help,

    Hi,
I just need a simple way of doing this as at the moment, i read one line at the time containing strings and numbers, whenever i convert this line to an array i loose the strings, if i want to display it, it displays as a group of lines while i would like to display it as a table with column headers. • Multilevel List Style and Numbering

I have searched the forum without success regarding a RH8 problem. Can someone help? My problem may be user error, but I suspect it is a bug based on the few posts I found regarding multilevel list numbering.
I created a multilevel list style. I configured the alignment of the text lines as desired. I used the style. All was working well. Then for no apparent reason, the alignment of the lines changed. The second line of text in a numbered line does not align correctly, as shown in the file attached to this post. I can resolve the problem but only temporarily by reinstalling RH8.
Alas, I was excited about the new multilevel list functionality, but I have found it to be very unstable.

Thanks to Rick, my problem is solved!
Rick looked at my style sheet and used it to make a small chm file and it displayed perfectly. He told me that he suspected either the browser settings or perhaps the display settings.
After comparing all IE settings to no avail, I turned to the Display Settings for Windows 7.
In Display Settings, I had the text setting set on medium (125%), so I changed it back to the default, which is smaller 100%), logged off and then back on and BINGO!!
    That was it!
I thought I had a problem with RoboHelp and it turned out to be the display setting for the OS! Urghhhhh!!!
Hope this helps other folks, who might be using the same setting and think that they're having a problem with their chm.....
    Thanks again, Rick!
    Best regards,
    Deb

  • Table of Contents based on numbered paragraphs

I'm trying to get my TOC to show numbers from the document's numbered paragraphs instead of the page numbers (think song book with the titles as numbered paragraphs and possibly more than one song per page). By taking off the option to show the page number and formatting the entry style I can get the paragraph number first and the title second, but can't figure out how to switch the two. I'm using CS3.
    Thanks for your help!

Perhaps by script (try InDesign Scripting) but ID's own TOC ustility is driven entirely by paragraph styles.

  • On Page 1 of the wizard, why are the Table of Contents, Index, and Glossary drop-downs grayed out?

Also, the Generate Adobe PDF option is grayed out.
    Thanks,

    Hi there
In addition to what Peter advised, my own guess as to why they are disabled (grayed out) is probably because you don't have more than one defined? It would make sense that unless more than one of each was present, they would be unavailable.
Now if you *DO* have more than one of each defined, I'm at a loss to explain why they might be presented in a disabled state.

  • Table of Contents only working on first chapter

Working with InDesign CS3 Mac.  We have a booklet with several chapters.  The table of contents is in its own chapter.  For some reason it is only creating a table of contents for what would be the following first chapter.  The rest of the following chapters are not showing up. I believe we have all the styles correct and the page numbering implemented correctly for those chapters.  Does anyone have any ideas on what we could be missing or doing wrong.  Thanks in advance for any help.

I am assuming you are using InDesign's Book feature and have each chapter added as a document in the Book?
Open the document that is going to have the Table of Contents in it from the Book panel.
Then edit the Table of Contents Style and enable the Include Book Documents option.
If you don't see this option, then click  More Options first.
Now try updating the Table of Contents.

  • Table of Contents and Section Numbering ??s

Hi, we are using CS6 and have a couple questions about trying to use automated section numbering and table of contents in a single document. We don’t do this often (actually, never used auto-TOC before), so I just want to see if I’m missing something obvious.
SECTION NUMBERING WITH SECTION INTRO PAGES
Our document (a style guide) is divided into sections. Each section begins with a section intro title page, which is basically just a blank page with the new section’s title nicely styled. We are setting up our sections as 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. And we would REALLY prefer for the page numbering to be ’1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.’, where X.0 is the section intro page.
    1) I can add the sections OK with a prefix of 1., 2., etc. But InDesign does not allow me to start the section numbering at ’0′, it must be ’1′. So my intro pages HAVE to be 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, etc. instead of 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 etc. Any creative workaround to solve this??? We really don’t want the intro pages to be X.1, as they have no content and we want the X.1 page to be the first with content on it, NOT X.2. How do people generally handle a section intro page?
    AUTO PAGE NUMBERS AND TOC
We are trying to use the automated Table of Content feature and running into an odd issue. We have page titles on top of each page in a unique paragraph style (H1). We are adding the page number at the beginning of this paragraph using ‘Type > Marker > Current Page Number’ and a unique character style. It’s working fine on the pages, showing the appropriate section numbering we setup for the document (e.g., 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, etc.).
But when we make the table of contents, the ‘page numbers’ at the beginning of the titles are coming in as absolute numbers (e.g., 7, 8 , 9, 10, 11, etc.) instead of our section numbering. I checked the General Preferences, and it is set to ‘View: Section Numbering’. And when I exported an interactive PDF, the bookmarks also add the absolute page number at the beginning of the titles as in the TOC. But if I set the TOC to include page numbers automatically, those DO display correct section numbers (they just precede or follow our titles with the incorrect numbering).
    2) Any ideas why the TOC and PDF Bookmarks would be picking up absolute numbering while the actual titles on the pages show the proper section numbering?
    THANKS!

    Peter Spier wrote:
I've never tried adding a second marker to a paragraph like that. Why not use a numbered list instead?
Just checking in here. Not sure I understand what you mean about using a numbered list. Do you mean instead of the page numbers in the titles, or instead of the Table of Contents? Not sure how either could be automated to stay in sync with adding/removing pages and creating the TOC links and bookmarks in our PDFs.
    - Is there a bug when the TOC pulls the specified title paragraphs and they have page numbers in them?
Thanks. Still trying to see if we're doing something wrong as this is the first we've played with TOC.

  • Sections and Automatic Table of Contents

    Hello there,
I have encountered a problem with InDesign while trying to make an automatic TOC for a journal I am working on. It has something to do with Sections.
So I have a book with several indd files. The very first indd file is called "frontpages" which includes the cover page, the inside cover, the leaf page, then two facing pages for the table of contents, then followed by the last page (Letter from the Editor).
This is followed by my second indd file called "newsbeats" which has 5 pages.
Now, what I wanted to do was mark the frontpages' page numbers using lower case roman numerals (i, ii, iii, etc.) Of course I do not want to include the cover page and the inside cover, so I want to start (i) with the leaf page, (ii) and (iii) marks the table of contents pages, and finally (iv) for the Editor's Letter. I did this by starting a section at the leaf page, START PAGE NUMBERNG AT: 1, and selecting the (i, ii, iii...) option. It worked, while leavingboth the cover page and and the inside cover with markers (a) and (b), which I previously set (because I do not know how to just get rid of the page number...)
Now, my book pages actually starts page (1) in the first page of the "newsbeats" document. So to do that, I made another section on the newsbeats first page, START PAGE NUMBERING AT: 1, and selected (1, 2, 3...). That works, too.
So at the moment, I have 3 sections to my page numbers: 1) the lower case letters (a, b) section for the cover page and inside cover, respectively; 2) the roman numerals section (i, ii, iii...) for the leafpage, table of contents, and Editor Letter; and lastly, 3) the arabic letters (1, 2, 3...) starting from the newsbeats document all the way to the last page of the last indd of my book.
Hope it is clear enough. Now here comes the problem:
When I try to create an automatic Table of Contents, it correctly finds my chapters (i used the style for each journal article's title) and lists them. The problem is, the page numbers do not appear correctly. Instead, it shows "a" on EACH AND EVERY table of contents ENTRY. I tried some trial and error, and found out that the pages shown (a bunch of "a") is actually the COVER PAGE'S (a) page number....
I tried for hours searching on topics like "Sections and Automatic TOC" or "How to selectively choose which pages to include in a TOC".. But I found none.
Your help would be really appreciated. I can easily manually type the page numbers (my journal only has 9 articles), but I wanted to do this in a very systematic way, so it would be a lot easier if in any case, there are more than 9 articles for next year's publication.
    THANK YOU SO MUCH!
    - Larry
PS: I attached a file showing the generated table of contents (on the ii-iii page that I wanted it to appear on), with the frontpages page panel, which shows the page numbering as well. Also I included the Book Panel, so you see how the pages are set up.

We definitely experienced the same issue. Seems like pages just get lost. This is the approach I took:
On the groups main page we just added a link called 'View All Articles' wrapped in a h1 tag (to make it very big and visible to the user) using the following url:
    search/?q=%20
The resulting page will search for every article with a space in it and return the results. Still not the most elegant solution but it works. I'd like to implement it right into the xsl file but haven't found very much documentation to aid in this.
