Aligning Equations

I've found a kludge to get me by, but still wonder what is the proper way to align a multi-line equation. Let's say I have this equation:
z = x+y = 4+6 = 10
I want this on 3 lines, with the '=' signs aligned. So I insert manual breaks and get this:
z = x+y
= 4+6
= 10
It seems logical to me that I should be able to go to Equation->Positioning, and select Alignment->'Left of ='. But this does not work. My kludge is to insert redundent z's, like this:
z = x+y
z = 4+6
z = 10
and for all but the first line, I set the font color for the z's to be white, so they are invisible:
z = x+y
z = 4+6
z = 10
What's the proper way to do this?

The alignment command should work when you use a vertical list instead of manual breaks, as described here.

  • Are there multiple ways to align equations?

    In the above example I've created a list with center alignment. Any equations I insert using the "Equation..." command in the "Insert" menu end up aligned by the equal sign--which doesn't look have bad in the example above, although it start skewing right at the bottom (when there aren't equal amounts of lettering on each side of the equal sign).
    However, it looks significantly less centered in an example such as this:
    where a vast majority of the terms are on one side, making the "center" alignment appear ...off.
    Does anyone know of a way to have the equations not center themselves on the equal signs while in "center" alignment? In many cases I'd prefer the equations to be centered by middle-of-box-containing-equation.

  • Align MathType equations in InDesign

    Hello
    Anyone know how to align mathtype equations in InDesign CS 4 automatic? I read many discussions topics here about scripts that apply equations and align, but I want to know if there are one way to use any script just to align the equations automatic in InDesign for MAC OS, there are any script that can do just that for Mac?
    Thanks
    Jonas!

    Hello,
    If you work on PC, I think I can help you by my system of scripts (MT-Script).
    You can read more about it on my site (http://mtscript.ru) or in Scribd publication (http://www.scribd.com/doc/73272275/MT-Script-or-How-to-Work-With-MathType-Equations-in-InD esign).
    So, what you can do with my scripts? I think... all you need to prepare your publication very and very quickly.
    For example,
    you can paste equations from Word into InDesign (you can work traditionally via exporting equations to Eqn00010.eps... and placing these equations into InDesign publication instead of texts with tags like this <<Eqn00010.eps>> ... but I'm just ready to suppose you new and very simple technick ... simply paste all doc-file WITH equations (like MathType objects) into InDesign and process it by MT-UnembedEqn script ... and that's all);
    you can edit equations directly in InDesign as native objects;
    you can create new equation in InDesign without Word;
    you can format all or some equations at a moment directly in InDesign;
    you can find and change in equations;
    you can export InDesign publication to RTF with editable MathType equations. Yes! You can do it... It's very simple... one click procedure. The forward and backward conversion Word-InDesign have been perfectly created in MT-Script;
    you can test it as full functional system from the second part of Friday till the end of Monday every week;
    you can ask me about MT-Script (MathType+InDesign problems as well) just now --> [email protected]
    I'm very pleased to help you with MathType equations in InDesign.
    BUT if it's usefull for you I can create a limited version for Mac which can paste, adjust equations and exporting InDesign publication to RTF with editable equations.
    The functionality to create new equations and edit them in InDesign will be restricted because of I don't work with Mac and can't create a "bridge" program to start MathType directly from my scripts on Mac. Sorry.
    Thank you.

  • Mathtype Equation Align

    Hi All,
    I need advice from all of them reg. the alignment of MathType Equations.
    We have developed a javascript which will place all the equation in appropriate places.
    The script will search <<Eqn001.eps>> etc... and replace with appropriate image over there. Its working fine.
    Still there is manual intervention of aligning the equation. We are unable to Align the equation in place, we need to align it manually. Is there is any way to align it properly.
    I have downloaded the Demo version of "MT2InD_CS3_demo" from Adobe site. This Demo version is aligining the equation automatically and its perfect.
    We need advice how to align the equation.
    We are using Indesign CS2 in MAC OS.

    MathMagic reads MathType equations including MathType EPS files.
    And MathMagic Pro comes with InDesign CSx plug-ins. MathMagic plug-ins have the ability to align the baseline of EPS equations automatically when inserted as inline graphics in a text box.
    There is also a dialog UI to adjust the baseline manually (up to in 1/1000 pt unit) if the automatic setting should be changed for some reasons.
    MathMagic Pro also offers other benefits such as duble-clicking to reedit the equation, and other productivity options.

  • Horizontal line in equation

    Is there a possibility to insert a horizontal line in an  equation?
    Prevereable in LaTex in a aligned area like in the example below.
    I found some kind of workaround but its far from perfect:
    \begin{aligned}
    x+y &=y+x\\
    &\underline{\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;}\\
    x-y &= -y+x\\
    \underline{\;\;\;\;\;\;\;}&\underline{\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;}\ \
    \end{aligned}

    I was able to use it by determining the keyboard equivalent in Font Explorer X and coping and pasting it into my document. The following is the information on the keys:
    ½ = Character code 189
    Other characters such as 1/4 and 3/4 didn't seem to work...
    Hope that helps

  • Format Equations for Export to e-pub?

    I am using MathType in Pages '09 for export to e-pub.  I am using the Apple supplied template, but the formatting appears in the e-pub document all fouled up.  Can anyone help?
    (Design Science refers me to Apple for help, but the Apple support on Pages seems to be tied to my platform, namely a Mac Mini, and I would apparently have to pay for help. Seems a bit harsh as the problem seems to lie with Pages.)

    Hi Art,
    Yes, I am with Design Science, but I'm not insulted. Do I understand your situation correctly -- it's that the equations are shifted up so that the bottom of the equation is aligned with the bottom of the document's text, right? (After conversion to epub.)
    If so, then it's not necessarily any one of the programs in isolation; it may be that they're just not communicating. In the case of MathType with Pages, or MathType with MS Word, the two apps do play nicely together, as long as you're using their native document format. If you save or export to formats like HTML, epub, or even PDF, the formatting may be preserved, but then it may not. It's just that neither of the companies necessarily put the engineering into that particular feature.
    I don't have any solution for you at the moment, but I can tell you that Design Science wants to see nice-looking math in e-books as much as anyone. Now that EPUB3 is a standard -- which includes MathML -- that's likely to become a reality sooner rather than later. Why not join the LinkedIn group "Ebooks for Math and Science"?  There are currently over 1,000 members in the group. Maybe someone there will have a tip with what's worked for him or her.

  • Can photoshop cc stack and align photos produced from lenses with barrel distortion

    I have a series of astrophotos that include terrestrial foreground and the milky way in the background.  The images were taken with a wide angle lens at f/2.8.  To increase the signal to noise ratio I would like to stack the images; however, due to the rotation of the earth the position of ht milky way relative to the foreground changes in each shot.  To correct for this I have imported the raw images as layers from lightroom and made a copy of all the images and transformed one copy of all the images into a smart object for stacking the foreground.  On the background (sky) copy, I made a layer mask that masked out the foreground for each photo.  Next I used the edit > auto-align-auto feature to align the images.  Next I deleted the layer masks and stacked the images using layers > smart-object > stack mode > median and photoshop did stack the images.  While the center and center top of the images did stack with a good image and an increase in the SNR, the rest of the photo came out blurred/smeared.  I have tried this many times and I keep getting the same thing.  Is barrel distortion causing this and if so is there anything I can do to correct for it?  I am attaching a before and after photo here, so hopefully you can see what I am talking about.  It is only aligning part of the sky and is just smearing the rest.

    That would be my guess - that the movement of the stars between shots was enough to bring lens distortion into the equation.  Which lens are you using?  If it's just a simple barrel/pincushion distortion then you might be able to fix it before stacking.  But anything more complicated like mustache (in case you're using the Samyang/Rokinon 14 mm) would probably lead to issues.
    Even with simple barrel distortion you might run into problems.  The fixes are only approximate, intended to remove visible distortion in an image when viewed as a whole.  But this use is a particularly extreme test of how perfect the correction can be, I wouldn't be fully surprised if there are still sections that are out of alignment.  It's an interesting problem, I'm curious to hear how it plays out.  That said, I'm sure you're far from the first to do this, so perhaps visiting an astro-photographer forum would be helpful.
    Personally, I'd have Lightroom apply the lens profile correction, then export all the images to Photoshop, using the same post processing.  If you're using the Samyang there's a profile you can download, but it only gets it close.  You may have to do a bit of manual masking on specific areas to make sure everything is as sharp as you want it.
    Edit: I could see it just being a PS alignment issue.  There's a lot of stars there.  I'm not sure how the algorithm works, but I'd assume it just lines up a few points.  If it messed up one of the points by just a tiny bit it'd probably throw off the entire image. I haven't used that function in a long time, but I remember trying to use the stacking feature back with CS5 and it did an absolutely terrible job.  I've heard it has gotten better, but everyone I talked to that did focus stacking all used third party software for that stuff.  Maybe there's a better program that people are using for this kind of work.

  • Why does Vertical Align Center align objects along the horizontal?

    And why does Horizontal Align Center align objects along the vertical?
    -g-
    P.S. Please please please make the Eydropper tool available by function key so I can toggle to it while using the Text tool. Please!

    g,
    but when I select two objects and click the vertical align button they snap to an invisible horizontal line
    This is (almost) identical to:
    Because (the centres of) vertically aligned objects will be on the same horizontal level/line.
    And that is just one way of expressing what vertical alignment means. Here are a few others:
    Their centres have the same height,
    Their centres have the same Y value on the Artboard/Workspace,
    In all cases, you can draw a horizontal line through their centres.
    Mathematically, Y = C (Y is a constant value C) is the equation for a horizontal line.

  • Prevent Equations size changing?

    I have done this straigthforward piece of La-tex and the equations further down have become smaller for some reason.
    How can I stop this happening?
    Or have I inadvertently done something to cause this to happen?

    Why not place all three equations in one block, with
    \begin{aligned}
    9 && < && 15 && < && 16 \\
    \sqrt{9} && < && \sqrt{15} && < && \sqrt16 \\
    3 && < && \sqrt{15} && < &&4
    \end{aligned}
    This should prevent the lower equations from shrienking.

  • Aligning Shapes etc

    When pasting, or inserting, a shape (or equation or other graphic element), the shape always aligns on top of the text line. I normally want to align it below the text line and sometime in the center of the text line. I want the shape to remain inline and not floating. Will Pages do this, and if so, how?

    Your suggestion was very helpful. In Appleworks, there is a format setting for the "descent" of the graphic which is similar to what you mention. I am thinking Equation Editor is scripted to set a specific descent value before it pastes the image into the text which produces a center-line alignment. My test in AW showed a descent = 3 for the given font style. And lo and behold, when testing this in Pages, pasting from Equation Editor (the component that comes with AW) into Pages, the particular equation graphic had a baseline shift = -9, and lined up pretty well! By tabbing, one gets back to a baseline = 0. However, spacing beyond the graphic keeps the current baseline shift (in this case -9) which is what had me confused in an earlier round of experimentation.
    This is probably the best I'm going to get but it is workable. Thank you!

  • ICal Week view, Date is not aligned with the Time(schedule) of each date

    Well, just like it says over there (`` ). I've recently been to China for a business trip, and I suppose the different time zone may have had something to do with the problem. Now I'm back home, changed the time zone back to normal, still the iCal shows in the weekly view that the Date on the above is not aligning with the Time and schedule. Any suggetions would be grateful!!!

    Hi,
    i omit the scheduling maergin key in material master,
    the result of MRP is
    BASIC DATES
    Finish 15.10.2009
    Start 14.10.2009
    PRODUCTION DATES
    15.02.2010 14:33:25
    14.10.2009 07:00:00
    scheduling type i planned order is still "backwards"
    so in MD04 it is say that the goods is available at 15.10.2009 same with requirement dates.
    this seem not right.
    it seems that order finish date is not adjusted by lead time scheduling on "today scheduling".
    Is there a way so order finish date is adjusted by lead time scheduling on "today scheduling" ????

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500 Premier prints only in black/MAC USER & won't align?

    PROBLEM # 1) I've replaced all my ink cartridges, but can't find out why my printer is now only printing in black? I'm a MAC user, so I want to print in color, and am trying to find instructions for a MAC on how to get back to printing in color?
    ACTION TAKEN #1
    UPDATE: I've done a three level cleaning of the printer heads, which DOES print in color and each color block now looks great.  The printer heads were not printing any color blocks, but the pink color block,  until the first third level cleaning. I then cleaned the printer heads a second time all the way through the third level.
    RESULT: However when I print from any document/web page my printer only still prints in black & white after these two printer adjustments double three stage printer cartridge claening?
     ACTION TAKEN #2
    I found this very detailed report and video on cleaning printer heads, alignment issues, and calibrate line feeds;
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c01624398&lc=en&product=3964986&tmp...
    The Print Quality Diagnostics Page looks perfect (including the alignment section)  in all 3 test patterns, and again prints in color.
    RESULT: However, my printer still will not print in color after trying all these steps?
    IPROBLEM #2)I  've also tried a align printer which also prints in color,  but states, "alignment failed see documentation manual"? To make the situation more complicated the alignment page looks perfect  and prints in color before the error message displays.
    After puling the power cord  twice while ON  and wiating 20 seconds, as discussed in the above link. my printer "won't remove the, "align  error message see diagnostics manual".
    RESULT: Printer "won't remove the, "align  error message see diagnostics manual", even though the Printer Diagnostic Pages looks great, and the alignment page as well.
    I'm operating a lastest version Macbook Air laptop OS X 10.9.4. I have not upgraded to a new operating system since this problem started a week ago, and Ive owned this HP Printer for 2 years.
    UPDATE: ISSUE SOLVED. Well you can imagine when I say that I spent about 2 hours on this yesterday that yea he's right. This took a long time to research and try all these solutions. I told my wife about the issue and had her try:
    ACTION TAKEN #3: Print a page from a second computer. Windows laptop printed a colored page from a web site.
    SOLUTION: (Printing only in Black Color): Wife literally solved the problem in 3 minutes!
    Look below at the presets drop-down arrow tab, which is right below the printer name: You will see PLAIN PAPER, FAST DRAFT, BLACK AN(D WHITE). I'm not sure how I checked this, but this is how you can print only in black ink. NOTE: I looked at dozens of answers across the web, and didn't find this info anywhere else!
    This screen shot show you what the setting should be if you want to print in fast draft mode to use the least amount of color ink.

    Hi monkplayer,
    It looks like your problem is solved? There wasn't a problem with the printer itself, just the printer settings on your Mac?
    This is good information though. We don't always have detailed solutions for customers that are using Safari, since it is hard to write instructions for the general public with specific steps for each operating system.
    Best of luck,
    Mary

  • Is there a shortcut to center-align all items of a certain type only?

    I know the title of this thread is poorly worded; I apologize. Let me try to explain.
    I design transit schedules, which I create in InDesign using tables. These schedules list arrival times for bus stops, but when the bus does not stop at a particular stop, this is indicated by an em dash.
    Example:
    The times are left-aligned within the columns (they are aligned on the colon). However, the em dashes are center-aligned. Currently, the entire table is left-aligned by default, and I manually highlight and center-align the em dashes. When there are just a few em dashes or when the em dashes are all adjacent to each other, it's no big deal.
    But I often have to work with schedules in which the em dashes are in every other row (like the top half in the example above) or scattered throughout the table, and in those cases, my very manual method is a real pain in the neck—I have to highlight and center each em dash individually.
    What I would LOVE to find is a feature similar to the Find and Replace feature, in which I could essentially ask InDesign to Find all em dashes within the document and center align them only. I've searched for such a feature to no avail. Am I overlooking something, or is this just not possible in InDesign? And if it's not possible, can you think of a better and more efficient way of center-aligning the em dashes than my current method?
    FYI, I'm still using InDesign CS3, though I hope to upgrade soon. If I learn that a Find and Align type of feature is available in CS5, well—that's just more motivation for me to upgrade ASAP!
    Thanks for your help and input.

    It can be solved through find and change itself. I think the below image will clarify your requirement.
