Aligning two words for logo in Illustrator

Hello!
I'm working on a logo right now, but here is the problem: I have two words that I'd like to have like this:
APPLE
PEAR
But I would like to exactly align the two words at either ends, but I don't know how, because when I type in Illustrator, it puts the words underneath each other, but not 100% outlined/aligned.
Appreciate your help, thanks!

Bernard,
You may select either/each of the word with the Type Tool and then adjust the Tracking in the Paragraph palette so that they fit.
You may adjust either or both (in opposite ways) for least possible ugliness.

  • Word For Mac Document Froze over top of another Word For Mac Document

    I have two Word for Mac documents open, one with my notes and the other being my essay.
    I needed to look up something from another word document that I accessed via an email. I downloaded the attacthed word document and opened it. It opened over top of my notes and froze. I cannot close the document that has froze so I would have to force quit Word for Mac, but that would cost me losing the document it has froze over as I am unable to save it. If this makes sense to anyone, I could really do with a hand, or be redirected where I could get some help!
    Thank you!

    All I can suggest is do a screen shot
    Shift cmd3
    or take a selection of what you want by
    shift cmd4
    save the file then force quick
    or press the power button on your machine till it quits.

  • Users of Word for Mac:  Help on Two Issues!!

    I downloaded some fonts I wanted to use in my Word for Mac document. Download went fine and the fonts are happily nestled in the Fonts folder. However, when I open Word, they do not appear on the Font listing. Any thoughts as to how to get them over so I can use them?
    Also, I wanted to use the Fonts to create a logo that--ideally--would be a half circle of text over the design. Simple enough, I thought: just go into Toolbox and pull down the styles (like you can in Windows) and choose the style I want.
    No such luck (we are dealing with a Mac here so everything is special) but suddenly a "special styles" toolbox appeared with exactly what I wanted--the ability to format a font to a 180' half circle, mirror image text and some other stuff that seemed interesting!
    When I went back to the document to format the text the "special styles" toolbox disappeared, never to be found again. Sigh...
    Any ideas? Oh, yes, there is a 180' in "Word Art" but I can't get the downloaded fonts into there, so that isn't really a solution.

    Okay, here are the details: Word for Mac 2008 Ver. 12.2.8
    Yes, I did post to the MS Forums.
    Still no answer from either MS or MAC forums.
    Sorry, but this doesn't strike me at that tough a question, hence the *****. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who uses Word for Mac and I'm equally sure I'm not the first one to download a font that didn't load into Word for Mac. The answer is out there somewhere....

  • In Lion, Word for Mac only prints last two digits of year

    In Snow Leopard, the automatic dates that auto fill in Word for Mac (08, 2011) worked fine...BUT since I 'upgraded' to Lion, (10.7.3) only the last two digits of the year will autofill, EVEN in full date mode...ie, SHOULD BE:
    February 21, 2012
    BUT auto filled as: February 21, 12
    I saw on a MS help site that it's ID'ed as a problem in Lion:
    From http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2008-macword/automatic-dat e-entry-doesnt-enter-entire-year/91793432-006b-4f6a-99fa-cf425266cb84
    This was the query:
    automatic date entry doesn't enter entire year
    Applies To: Office for Mac | Office 2008 for Mac | Word for Mac
    When I enter the weekday at the beginning of a sentence, the month, date and year are automatically filled in. However, instead of having the whole years, such as 2011, it only enters the last two digits, such as "11". This is new since an update a month or so ago. I would like to set it back to the original "Friday, November 04, 2011" if possible.
    Appreciate any help I can get.
    ANSWER:
    Its a bug in OSX.7 evidently MS has not rung up Apple and said hey get off your duff and fix this date issue.  If you can find a place to send bug report to Apple do so.
    So I checked the OSX Lion support site on apple.com and could not find an answer.
    Does anyone know how to fix or how to get Apple to fix?
    Thank you.

    It's a bug, but whether it's a bug for Apple to fix or for Microsoft to fix is unknown. The thread you post is unauthoritative, being only comments by other users who have no more idea as to where the bug really lies (unless an Apple engineer has confirmed a Lion bug, something I've not seen) as any other user does; no one in that thread works for or speaks for either Microsoft nor Apple.
    You can comment on the issue to Apple, if you wish:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
    but whether it's something they can fix or whether it's Microsoft's problem I can't say.

  • Two finger scroll not working in Microsoft Word for Mac

    Just finished installing Yosemite today and haven't had any real issues...however, I've noticed that two-finger scrolling doesn't work in Microsoft Word for mac. It works fine in many other applications (including other Microsoft apps--Excel & PowerPoint), but not Word.
    I've looked for any scrolling options that may be "unchecked" in the preferences, but haven't found any.

    I'm having the same issue. However, I have restarted and it still won't work. This is extremely frustrating as I have the latest updates and everything but it doesn't work and I keep forgetting every time I try to scroll.
    I'm also having the issue of whenever my Mac goes to sleep or if I turn it off, the log in screen says there are updates necessary. I feel like this is a bug because I've updated my computer like 20 times in the past few days...

  • Organizing colour mode for print in Illustrator

    Hi,
    I want to set up my document as a two-colour for print. I'm not really sure what is the correct swatch library to choose, if there is such a thing. Either way, i selected Pantone Solid Uncoated as my swatch library. I chose two colours from this and applied them to all aspects of my document. However, the document colour mode is still set to the default CMYK, and my only other choice is RGB. My question is, how do I organize my document to be 2-colour pantone print ready?
    Regards,
    Erin.

    I'm not really sure what is the correct swatch library to choose, if there is such a thing.
    Erin,
    You don't have to use a so-called "Color Book" Swatch Library at all to define a spot color. You can set up the on-screen appearance of a color any way you want (using RGB or CMYK values) and simply define it as a Spot Color. You can also name a spot color anything you want. And you can do this in either a CMYK or RGB document.
    The truth is, a spot color is nothing but grayscale values sent to a single color separation plate.
    For example: Suppose you just don't find Illustrator's onscreen display a convincing rendition of Pantone Metallic 875. You can simply create a new swatch, adjust its CMYK or RGB sliders to something that does look like 875 on screen, set that Swatch to Spot, and name it "Pantone 875 Spot."
    Different example: Suppose you are building a 5-color (process plus 1 spot) glossy brochure (a very common practice). The client's logotype color spec is Pantone 875 metallic. You want occurrances of the logo and the company's tag line to overprint in that ink. But you also need to simulate the logotype color in product illustrations that will occur in the brochure. You have learned from experience (read tests) that even Pantone's own recommendation for CMYK simulation of 875 does not yield a satisfying or convincing simulation in print. In this case, you might simply define the CMYK values that you consider satisfying for simulating 875 in CMYK artwork, name that Swatch "Pantone 875 Process", duplicate that Swatch, change it to Spot, and rename it "Pantone 875 Spot." When you print seps, you'll still get seps named Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, and Pantone 875 Spot.
    It's all-too-easy (and all-too-frequent in this forum) to just toss out off-the-top "feature requests." It's quite another thing to actually think it through before doing so. Illustrator does not need a separate "spot color mode."
    Spot color is, by definition, for print, as is CMYK. They are just elements of the same color-separation process. Spot color is quite commonly combined with CMYK process. It would be patently ridiculous to require changing a document from CMYK to Spot Color just to use spot color. Spot color swatches are used every day in CMYK documents for everything ranging from the 5-color artwork described above to varnishes and spot liquid lamination.
    Even Illustrator's distinction between CMYK and RGB Document Color Modes has more to do with maintaining onscreen display of color than with any mechanical or workflow necessity. Other programs don't do that. You don't see "CMYK vs. RGB" documents in Draw, FreeHand, Canvas. In any mainstream drawing program, you can define RGB and/or CMYK and/or spot colors all day long in the same document. Users have been doing this just fine for literal decades. I have decades of project archives to proove it.
    Now, something that would be both useful and genuinely innovative in vector programs (and befitting the industry's sometimes overblown focus on onscreen color calibration) is onscreen consideration of the real-world opacity of inks. Fact is, even with all of Illustrator's hair-splitting focus on color-calibration profiles, etc., etc., it (and all other programs like it) does a pathetic job of making a reasonable onscreen representation of spot inks. Understand--this is not a matter of color model "mode"; it's a matter of overcoming the effective assumption that there is only one kind of "printing" in the world, i.e., offset printing with translucent inks.
    Example: Set up a process-color job that will be printed not on white paper, but on a dark substrate. The illustration is, say, a dinosaur. You, the illustrator (remember? the name of this program is "Illustrator") intend to use yellow ink as a highlight that overprints some darker green. You know this will work, because you know that the yellow spot ink you have specified is much more opaque than the translucency of ordinary CMYK offset process inks that Illustrator always assumes. Suppose that in addition to this, you intend to use an opaque white ink in the design; or a metallic. Turn on the so-called "overprint preview" feature and you'll see that Illustrator (and programs like it)--with all its painstaking focus on onscreen color calibration and gee-whiz "transparency"--is completely incapable of convincingly displaying this common scenario--used everyday on everything from T-shirts to lunch boxes. The fact is, illustration programs are used every day as workflow production tools for much broader applications than just offset printing and web pages. There's silkscreen, signage, embroidery, flexography, etc.
    A spot ink is nothing more than a user-defined ink--a process separation plate other than the common four. Stating that Illustrator 'needs a Spot Color mode' is confusing spot color with line art. Spot color is as much a part of process separation as it can be part of line art. Providing the user the ability to specify the real-world opacity of the user-defined ink in the real-world printing method being targeted would be a truly useful feature.
    Understand: This is not pie-in-the-sky. It can already be done (and commonly is) in Photoshop, because Photoshop correlates Channels to inks, and you can define as many additional channels as you want, and you can individually set their opacity. The onscreen display properly reflects the real-world opacity without wrecking the real-world separations.
    So just think of a spot color Swatch as an additional user-defined process INK. Think of the various spot color Libraries as mere preset conveniences.
    You could define a spot color Swatch named "Pantone 875" that looks purple on screen if you had some desire to do so. It would still print correctly so long as the printing house put Pantone 875 INK in the press--which is what they'll do if the separation plate says "Pantone 875"--which is what it will if you name the spot ink that way.
    Also: Assuming you have the Adobe PDF virtual printer installed (which you probably do), to test your spot color separations you can simply invoke the Print dialog, select Adobe PDF as the "printer" and select Separations in the Output pane. The resulting PDF will contain one grayscale page for each INK.

  • How do I keep alignment of a grouped logo based on four elements?

    I created and aligned a logo based on four letters. Afterwards I grouped them. The alignment is correct. But if I copy the group and place it at a different location, the alignment falls slightly out of place. What do I need to do in order to keep the group aligned?
    thanks for answering
    angelika

    I can think of two things that might cause this.
    First is align to baseline grid. If enabled for one letter but not others, you might see changes in the vertical postioning of  that letter in treation to the others. If applied to all letters you might find you are unable to postion the logo at the exact vertical spot you want it. More likely, though, you'd see one or more letters go into overset unless the frames were very deep.
    Second is text wrap. If the letters are in individual frames, they would be affected individually by text wrap applied to another object. You could overcome this by turning on "Ignore Text Wrap" for the logo frames in the text frame options.
    Other things you could do: Convert the text to outlines. When you convert to outines you no longer have editable text, and it is not subject to text wrap or baseline grid complications.
    Or create the logo in a second document and export as PDF, then place the PDF. It will behave as an image. If you need to be able to edit the logo easily, save in a separate ID doc and place the page from the .indd. Updating the original will update the placed copy.

You can embed a mini version within a document (copy it and paste it from within the x.doc) but that's a pretty hokey looking solution.

  • How do I add a two word phrase to index

    I’m trying to speed up the process of adding Latin names of plants and animals to an index using Indesign CS4. These consist of two word phrases (genus + species) which need to be put into the topic level 1 and topic level 2 boxes of the New Page Reference (Index) dialog. Using Ctrl 7 to invoke the dialog just puts whatever is selected into Topic1 and using Shift+Ctrl+Alt+] adds a ‘proper name’ index entry (Surname, forename) which is no good. When the information has been entered, a simple nested index can be produced, sorted by  genus and then species.
    I’m used to programming using vb in MS Office but am totally new to javascript and this has taken two days to get this far. The first problem is that if the user only puts an insertion point into the first word (genus) I can’t figure out how to move to the second word (species) in order to save it to a variable.
    So I have:
    var myTopic1 = "" ; // topic level 1, i.e. genus
    var myTopic2 = "" ; // topic level 2, i.e. species
    myIP = app.selection[0] ;
    myTopic1 = myIP.words[0].contents ;
    This works on a insertion point in any word, or if a phrase is highlighted will take the first word.
    Is there a simple way of copying the second word after the insertion point to myTopic2? I’ve tried various methods but can’t get anything to work. I thought it would be a simple matter of adding 1 to the index of the containing paragraph or story.
    I’ve got round this in a very long-winded way by asking the user to select the whole genus+species string, then working out the position of the dividing space and reconstructing the genus and species character by character:
    var myString = "" ; // user-selected string: genus + species
    myString = myIP.contents
    myStringlen = myIP.contents.length
    var xposn = myString.indexOf(" "); // gives posn of the (first) space character within selected string
    var yposn = 0 ; // start of the string
    myTopic1 = myString.charAt(yposn) ;
    while (yposn < (xposn-1))
    myTopic1 = myTopic1 + myString.charAt(yposn+1) ;
    yposn++ ;
    while (xposn < myStringlen)
    myTopic2 = myTopic2 + myString.charAt(xposn+1) ;
    xposn++ ;
    // show results:
    alert("Topic1 = " + myTopic1 + ". Topic 2 = " +myTopic2) ;
    So at this point I need to figure how to invoke the New Page Reference dialog with Topic1 and Topic 2 filled in? I would like the option of overriding the character format of the page reference ‘Number Style Override’, so would prefer to conclude the script with the dialog left open. Can this be done using script, or do I need a custom dialog? Alternatively it would also be good to just automatically save Topic1 and Topic2 and insert the index marker at the selection point without invoking any dialogs. I’m really struggling to get anywhere with this, can someone please help! Many thanks. Sorry for the long post.

    John,
    It can be confusing initially, but JavaScript and InDesign's object model will soon make sense. What you want to do can be done with this script:
    w1 = app.selection[0].words[0].contents;
    w2 = app.selection[0].words[1].contents;
    doc = app.activeDocument;
    if (doc.indexes.length == 0){
        doc.indexes.add();
    species = doc.indexes[0].topics.add (w1).topics.add (w2);
    species.pageReferences.add (app.selection[0], PageReferenceType.currentPage);
    Select genus and species, then run the script.
    It's not possible (I don't think) to open the New page Reference dialog. Do you want to apply the number style override to all page references? If that's the case, don't. Apply the character style to the page numbers after the index has been generated, or better, set it in the index paragraph style.
    If you want to apply the number style override only to some pages, you can do as follows. Before selecting genus+species, prefix the genus name with e.g. #. That symbol tells the script to add an override. The script will strip the #, create the page reference, and add the override. You need to tell the script somehow which character style to use for the override.

    Edit: Jump beat me to it, and gives you a different method to get your two words. Spoilt for choice!

  • How to get Character Viewer to stay visible (esp. in Word for Mac)?

    I'm asking this on behalf of a friend who has a 2013 13-inch (non-retina) MackBook Pro and uses it with an Apple Cinema Display. Since the upgrade to Mavericks the behaviour of the Character Viewer has changed, where it no longer 'sticks' (stays both active and on top) as a visible window when you switch applications: now it needs to be called up from within each application, and will be visible when working with that app.
    He needs the Character Viewer open all the time and this change is inconvenient (he draws special characters from it constantly). But the main problem is that he mostly works in MS Word for Mac and as far as I can tell Microsoft have not updated Word to respect the behaviour Mavericks intends for Character Viewer: to stay visible while working. Instead, the Character Viewer window randomly closes. So, while hoping for an update from MS (but not holding breath since they provide their own inferior version of a glyph viewer in Word)) I have two questions:
    1. Can anyone suggest a way, perhaps using Applescript or Automator (which I don't know how to use), to make the Character Viewer always stay open and visible while using any application? This would be the preferable solution, in effect restoring the behaviour seen before Mavericks.
    Or
    2. Can someone give us some guidance on how to make a custom keyboard shortcut in Word for Mac that we could assign to bring up the (OSX) Character Viewer, since the usual system shortcut for that (control-command-space) is not respected in Word. Or alternatively, an Applescript or Automator solution for this that would be available from within Word?
    Thanks!

    Did you try:
    ->System Preferences->Keyboard and check [ ] Show Keyboard & Character Viewers in menu bar
    It closes when I switch desktops with spaces or open another App, but it displays when I go back to the Word window

  • Problem selecting text in PDF created by MS Word for Mac 2011

    I'm viewing PDFs in Adobe Digital Editions 4.0, and when I try to select text, the text that actually gets selected is 1-2 lines BELOW where the cursor (I-bar) is located.  This makes highlighting text extremely difficult.  This only seems to happen with PDFs that were created in MS Word for Mac 2011 and viewed in Adobe Digital Editions.
    If I try opening the very same PDF file in Adobe Reader, the cursor highlights text just fine.  If I open it in Preview, it works fine too.  It just won't work when viewing the PDF in Adobe Digital Editions.

    I have not been able to find any info on this issue anywhere, and if anyone knows a fix or workaround, I would greatly appreciate the help.

    Thanks; this last reply came closest to 'solving' the issue. While I selected font sub, it at first had no affect on the document.
    I then went back to prefs and set the compatability dropdown from 'Custom' (where it had defaulted) to 'Word 2004-2007', assuming these docs were created from a recent past Windows.
    I 'Saved As' a Word for Mac " .docm "
    Whoa... the extensions mean something. Your original problem (document shows bold, italic, underline, but tables and other complex formatting are lost) sounds as though the document was being exported as a .RTF, a Rich Text Format file. If you save as a .DOCM, that's a Word Macro Enabled Document. Regular Word 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011 docs are .DOCX. Regular Word 97 through 2004 docs are .DOC. You need to save that document as a .DOCX or a .DOC or you're gonna have problems later.
    - and the documents appear normal (though I had to switch one to 'Portrait' as it for some reason wanted to display in landsacpe.
    Normally you'd have to select page orientation.
    So, poor testing on my part. I have no idea which of the above steps fixed it but I'm guessing the 'Save As' to my version of Word.
    If so, it would appear the 'Compatability' feature was not working at least on these two documents.
    Word's compatibility feature is supposed to ensure that a document you produce is compatible with the target version of Word. If you turn the compatibility stuff on then you will be warned if you are using Word 2007 through 2011 and you use a feature that earlier versions of Word do not have. Microsoft shipped a translator which works with Office 2003 and 2004 and which allows Word 2003 or 2004 to read Word 2007, 2008, 2010, or 2011 documents (.DOCX) and to save them as Word 97 through 2004 documents (.DOC) _as long as they don't have any incompatible features_. Word's compatibility features doesn't do much for .RTFs or for .DOCMs.
