All of my mail accounts keep going and staying offline

Any ideas.  I've talked to two others who this is also happening...

I have been having the same problem for about the past 2 months using mail 4.4 on OS 10.6.6. Its been working fine for a couple of years without a hitch until now. I have about 10 different email addresses all hosted on the same reseller server. Each time there is a timed 'get mail' various accounts go offline and then come back online later, sometimes after a minute or so, some after an hour.
A similar thing is also happening on my iphone4 and ipad2 - 'mail server....... not responding'. This also seems to randomly alternate between various accounts.
My ISP has looked into it and cant find a problem but I think that this is because they cant replicate the problem. They suggested it might be a router/network issue but the problem still happens regardless of wifi being switched off. I have tried a Telnet test and all seems Ok.
Very frustrating as I sometimes have to wait for over an hour for an email to come in that is urgent.

  • Mail accounts keep going off line since Mountain Lion upgrade

My iCloud accounts keep going off line after a while. When Mail asks me if I want to take my accounts online (after pressing the exclamation triangle) nothing happens. The only way to get my accounts back online is to close and reopen Mail. Any thoughts?

It might be worth pointing out I get the error message "The server returned the error: The server “p04-imap.mail.me.com” cannot be contacted on port 993.".
I've tried having Use SSL checked and unchecked but it doesn't seem to help. The only thing that solves it is closing and reopening Mail.
Finally it would now appear that it only happens after the mac has been woken from sleep.

  • Mail accounts keep going offline and then back on again

I am using Mail 4.4 on OS 10.6.6. I have 9 different email accounts in my inbox from 4 different domains. All the domains are hosted on a reseller account so they are all on the same server. Mail is scheduled to check mail every 5 minutes and each time alternating accounts go either on or offline. This behaviour also happens on my iphone 4 with IOS6 and ipad 2 with IOS5.
I am using the same setup and OS as I have been for the past year or so and it has been absolutely fine up until a few months ago. My ISP is being helpful and they have replicated the problem on one of their Macs but it doesn't happen on a PC. They are puzzled also.
I read somewhere that the mail app has a short time out where it takes the account offline if there is no response and that having all email accounts on the same server might cause this problem. Not sure if this is correct advice however.
I have turned off some of the accounts so that only 2 are in the inbox, its still happening but not as often. Anybody have any suggestions as its driving me mad.

My brother and mother are having the same problem. We all three are on SBC Yahoo! DSL and all share GoDaddy-based email addresses. I'm clearly on a different part of the SBC Network - as I have rarely had problems with mail accounts kicking me offline, whereas they have the same problem you do - accounts are random and inconsistent when they kick offline.
I've tried to research whether it's a GoDaddy, SBC or Mail issue. Thanks in advance!

  • Why do my Mail accounts keeping going offline since I switched to comcast?

I recently switched to Comcast. The ougoing mail for my new comcast accounts goies on and offline constantly all the time. It doesn't happen for my .mac account. I've tried changing the port to 465 or 587 but that doesn't make any difference. any ideas?

You will need to call Comcast and ask them exactly what settings they require; I've had multiple problems with them which were finally resolved when he told me to start using port 25 (but mentioned that that is not available everywhere and/or not widely used or something like that). I used to have to delete the Mail .plist and set up Mail again and again to the point that I made screenshots of all settings windows so I could just copy them if needed. Here is a screenshot of my outgoing (smtp) settings:
Again, this was at the direction of Comcast tech support. I believe they also now have a web page with instructions for Mac.

  • TS3276 All accounts keep going off line, quitting Mail fixes the issue

All accounts keep going off line, quitting Mail fixes the issue.
I have 3 Gmail, 1 hotmail and a yahoo. Al go off line with a little alert symbol next to them.
If I select take all accounts on line nothing happens.
    Email delivery stops.
To fix this, I quit Mail and re launch it. That fixes it.
    It's realy annoying.
    Any ideas?

I have the same problem - it started when I upgraded to OS X 10.8
I thought subsequent releases may help, but I'm now on 10.8.2 and no joy.

  • Mail pinwheel just keeps going and going

After sending an email to hotmail.com the Mail pinwheel just keeps going and going and I keep receiving these massages (Delivery Status Notification (Failure)) with the same date and time. I delete them and they just keep on piling in the trash folder untill I decide to Delete them.
    Text in the messages says:
The following message to <[email protected]> was undeliverable.
    The reason for the problem:
5.1.0 - Unknown address error 550-'Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable'
    Final-Recipient: rfc822;[email protected]
    Action: failed
    Status: 5.0.0 (permanent failure)
    Remote-MTA: dns; [65.54.244.136]
Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 5.1.0 - Unknown address error 550-'Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable' (delivery attempts: 0)
    Reporting-MTA: dns; avas3.coqui.net

If they have already been removed from the server, you may be able to get rid of those messages in Mail doing Edit > Cut (⌘X) (for best results do it with one message or just a few at a time).
If the problems persist, you’ll have to get rid of the *.emlx files associated with the offending messages and re-create the index.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), here are two alternative procedures that should allow you to fix the problem. Let me know which do you find more convenient and/or works better for you:
    <hr>
    PROCEDURE A
    1. Select the offending messages in Mail.
    2. Copy the following script, open /Applications/AppleScript/Script Editor, paste the script there, and click Run:
    set theFileList to {}
    tell application "Mail"
    set theSelection to the selection
    repeat with aMessage in theSelection
set aFileName to (id of aMessage as string) & ".emlx"
copy aFileName to the end of theFileList
    end repeat
    end tell
    get theFileList
A list of the *.emlx files associated with the offending messages should appear in the script’s Result pane (and in Script Editor’s Window > Result History).
    3. Quit Mail.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is stored.
    5. In the Finder, go to the ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/ account folder.
    6. Move Deleted Messages.mbox to the Trash if there is nothing to be preserved there.
    7. Locate the offending *.emlx files within INBOX.mbox’s Messages folder and move them out of there, e.g. to the Desktop. You can open the *.emlx files with a text editor to view their contents and check that they do indeed correspond to the offending messages before getting rid of them.
    8. Go back to ~/Library/Mail/, locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
    9. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index — Mail says it's “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
    <hr>
    PROCEDURE B
    1. Quit Mail and make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is stored.
    2. Open Mail.
    3. Create a new custom “On My Mac” mailbox.
    4. Select the affected account’s Inbox in Mail, then select all the messages it contains (Edit > Select All (⌘A)) and deselect the offending messages by Command-clicking (⌘-click) on them. That is, select all the messages in the mailbox except the offending ones.
    5. Do Message > Move To, and select the mailbox created is step 3. That is, move to another mailbox all the messages that should be preserved and that are stored in the same mailbox as the offending ones.
    6. Quit Mail.
    7. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
    8. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/. Move INBOX.mbox and Deleted Messages.mbox to the Trash.
    9. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index — Mail says it's “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
    <hr>
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

  • I recently updated to Mavericks and now all my e-mail accounts won't send

I recently updated to Mavericks and now all my e-mail accounts won't send. They all receive ok but when I send I get a message "sender address rejected by server" and " Authentification required" The passwords are still intact

Check the Mail settings for your account, especially the SMTP (outgoing) address, type of authentication, and entry of the proper email username and password. You can do this when you select the account then under the outgoing mail server use the dropdown menu to select the Edit option. Select your outgoing configuration in the list. Check the settings below, then click on the Advanced tab and check those settings.
If all is OK, then I suggest your reinstall Mavericks:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.

  • HT1694 All of the mail on my iPad and iPhone disappeared after my outlook downloaded. How to I keep mail resident in both places?

All of the mail on my iPad and iPhone disappeared after my outlook downloaded. How to I keep mail resident in both places?

I managed to lose an earlier reply I'd started before you came back with your "solved" so I didn't bother to retype it.
    It went something like this:
You should be able to recover the media with the tips in  this post from forum regular Zevoneer but I'm not sure what the implications are for your application settings. You can probably transfer your purchases into an authorised library, backup the device, recover any other media using third party tools, then restore the device from the backup.
The older .itl file is useful however as iTunes should see this as the "home" library for your device which will allow you to preserve the application settings. (.itl file? Mac? I assume the library has migrated from PC to Mac at some point). Any files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder or did you kill those as well? The most recent of these would be the best place to start.
And no, the .itl file is not editable by mortals...
Once you've restored the media from backups or recovered whatever else you useful can from the device, the scripts MusicFolder Files Not Added and Super Remove Dead Tracks should help get the library up to speed with the contents of the media folder.

I delete an account and tell my notes not to show in the mailbox but each time I close the mail program or restart the computer the mail account comes back and the preferances reset.
I have deleted preferances. I deleted the account using the - sign in system preferances. I make the account inactive, close mail and relaunch and it is active. I have using the email and installed a new ssd system drive. I was able to change some of the mail program settings but then it just quit letting me change and save them. When I delete it in the mail program, it asks it I want to remove it for good, I say yes.

  • How do I stop the spinning ball that keeps going and going and going

How do I stop the spinning ball that keeps going and going and going.  I think I have to remove cookies, but I don't know how.

    I think I solved it.
I searched my extensions folder (in my profile) for all image files (PNG and JPG), and found the pop-up images to be in an extension folder related to Firefox Sync (not an external extension, actually). But even though I had already disabled it and un-linked this computer from Firefox Sync, the message still popped-up.
I think the image filename was SYNC.PNG, or something like that. Close Firefox, find the folder where that image is in, and rename the main folder (the one right under the extensions folder) to some other name (such as "original name_copy"). Then start Firefox. Check if it works OK and if the pop-up ceases to appear. If everything OK, then you can delete that folder.
If something goes wrong, just rename the folder to what it was before.

  • Ipad will not reboot circle just keeps going and going

can not charge ipad the circle just keeps going and going

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

My e-mail account was blocked and I forgot my iTunes password. Now I cannot receive the new password, as I cannot enter my hotmail account. What should I do to change my iTunes account, plus my iCloud account? Thank you in advance!

If you remember your answers to your security questions then you can try getting the password reset via http://iforgot.apple.com
If not then you can try contacting Support in your country and see if they can reset the password for you : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
If you can access to it you can update the primary email address on it by tapping on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Store on your iPad and then tapping 'view Apple id' on the popup, or you can do it via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes or via http://appleid.apple.com
