'All Photos' is sorted randomly. Cannot be changed.

Ok, this is very frustrating.
I have 10.10.3 and Photos 1.0 (209.52.0).
I've just dragged about 9000 photos in Photos (all taken with my various iPhones over the years, correct metadata, EXIF, etc). Everything imported fine, with the exception that the 'All Photos' album is randomized. I see a 2013 photo at the very bottom with a bunch of 2015 photos. At the very top are some photos I took before I dragged the 9000 extra in there. Basically it's not respecting photo capture date AT ALL, and is maybe sorting by date/time of import instead. 'Keep sorted by date added' is checked (but frustratingly, greyed out).
If I go to Years mode, everything is correct as it should be. I can also go into individual albums and sort by date or name.
It's annoying because 'All Photos' follows the same order on my iPhone too, so i'm seeing a bunch of mixed up photos.
If I drag 9000 photos into Photos, why in the heck would I want that sorted by date added?
Anybody else seeing this? I reported this as a bug in the public beta, but no fix so far.
I really want to like Photos, but man…

Yeah, I do acknowledge that it's 'date added' rather than 'date captured' in the post. I just meant that it still appeared random to me.
I figured out what the problem was, and the following post is a solution…
Turns out a bunch of the files (i.e. the ones out of order) had erroneous file creation dates that didn't match up to the actual capture date. Not sure how that happened. Some were saying they were 'created' several years after they actually were.
So it looks like (at least when importing) Photos just scans the file creation date rather than the EXIF data. Maybe it's faster to do that, but it's kind of sloppy of Apple. They should know that file creation dates can get messed up.
To fix all this, I used the excellent ExifTool, which can sync creation/modify date to EXIF. If you don't have ExifTool, the easiest method is to get it using Brew, at http://brew.sh
Once brew is properly installed and updated, simply type into terminal…
brew install exiftool
Once you have that installed, in terminal I 'cd' to the folder of images and then run…
ExifTool "-FileModifyDate<DateTimeOriginal" *
The * basically just means modify every file in that folder. I know that UNIX doesn't officially acknowledge creation dates, but this command changes BOTH creation and modification dates to be the same, which is fine in my opinion.
I then reimported all the images and everything in All Photos is sorted as it should be. Phew!

  • 'All Photos' Album Sorting Order

I have 16.683 photos appearing under 'photos'. 16.853 under the Album 'All photos' and the order is not chronological (i.e.: sometimes a pic from 2009 is among those taken in 2013). Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

On my system at least, All Photos shows the most recent photos at the bottom, not the top.
Sorry, yes, they are also sorted ascending. Must have been wishful thinking on my part.
But at least the most recently imported moments are more or less isolated at one end of the album and can be accessed there without searching for them.
If we only can sort by capture date, we have to know the capture date to find recently imported old photos.
But I just noticed, that Photos seems to remember, how an album has been scrolled. If I close Photos with the Moments scrolled all the way down, it will open them again scrolled to the most recent moment. And I do not have to click the scholar to get there.
While that order does indeed reflect the date & time when I import new photos from my iPhone, with the last imported ones at the bottom of the window, for the photos migrated from my iPhoto library during the initial setup of Photos, the order seems random -- it is definitely not the order those photos were added to iPhoto, nor are they sorted by the date the photo was taken, or by any other date-related criteria I can determine.
This has been the case which other major upgrades of iPhoto or Aperture.
The Masters folder is organized by the date of the Import session, and all older  imports to iPhoto and Aperture are now showing the import session 2010, when I upgraded iPhoto to the iLife '11 version. It looks like the Import season date may be discarded, when a library is rebuild for an upgrade or a migration.
I've seen similar with itunes. I like to listen to the music sorted by the date added, the most recent items first, but it happened several times, that all all songs were showing a changed "date added".

  • ITunes re-syncs all photos even if they haven't changed

I've found that when syncing my iPhone or iPad, some times, iTunes decides to resync all the photos on the device (i.e. wipe and the sync again).
I've not changed any of the photos so am not sure what's triggering this.
My configuration is set up to simply sync all photos from one of my folders (iPod Photos)
The strange thing is that this issue seems to occure randomly - i.e. doesn't happen every time I sycn.
Anyone have any ideas why this would be happening?
    thanks

I don't have a solution, but I can take a guess at what's going on.
My photos are on a shared folder in the Cloud (Mozy Sync).  There are two laptops in the family that access this folder on a regular basis (husband and wife).  Each laptop has iTunes installed.  Wife syncs her iPhone to her laptop using her instance of iTunes.  Husband syncs his iPhone to his laptop using his instance of iTunes.
Whether the pictures are re-synced depends on who synced last.  For example, if Wife synced last, and Husband syncs, all the pictures are reloaded from scratch.  Now, if Husband syncs again, only the changed pictures are loaded.  But if Wife syncs next, all of the pictures are reloaded from scratch.
My theory is that the two instances of iTunes are fighting over the thumbnails in the folder iPod Photo Cache. Thumbnails are scaled-down versions of the picture files that take up less storage space, but are suitable for display on the iPhone's screen.  If Wife was the last person to sync, Husband's iTunes doesn't recognize the thumbnails, so it proceeds to erase them and rebuild them.  However, if Husband performs the next sync, his iTunes recognizes the thumbnails and syncs only items that changed.
If this is the problem, then the question is:  How do I get both instances of iTunes to share the same thumbnails without re-creating them each time?  Alternately, can I  have two instances of the iPod Photo Cache, one for Wife and one for Husband?
    Is this resonating with anyone?

I received an Iphone 5 as a gift two days ago. The first thing I did was set up ICloud for photos. Itunes would not allow me to add songs to my new phone without restoring it, yet when I did this, it deleted all 129 photos of my graduation and friends from the past two days. And I cannot find them anywhere, photo stream, ICloud, nothing. Where can I get back my memories?

Were the photos taken by your new iPhone?  If so, did you not import them off your phone to your computer (as you would any other digital camera) before the restore?  If not, restoring wiped the data off the phone and your pictures are gone.
Sounds like a good time to (re)read the User Guide.

  • Delete all photos from windows? did something change in win 8.1 or ios8?

    using win 8.1
    iPhone 5
    ios8
in windows explorer i drag/drop the pictures to my desktop, no problem, copy done
i used to be able to then select the same file and just delete
now i'm getting an error that the device has been disconnected or unavailable. (sorry, i don't have the exact message anymore)
i used to get this problem if i hadn't selected to "trust" the device but i can confirm that was done
a suggestion on the web was to use the option to "import photos" and then in the advanced options choose the option to delete the files after import. the import works, but the files don't get deleted so it seems like there is something related here.
    any ideas?
i needed to wipe my phone so i did it completely manually from the photos app by selecting every picture and then deleting the recently deleted photos.

    ooba,
    > My question is what has changed from flash mx pro
    > to flash 8 pro when calling functions.
Honestly ... not a thing. ActionScript has new features (new
    APIs) in
Flash 8 that weren't available in Flash MX 2004 -- and MX
    2004, in turn, had
new features that weren't available in Flash MX -- but those
    are mainly
enhancements to the corresponding Flash Player, with each
    release. The
manner in which functions are called hasn't changed since
    Flash 5.

You should still be able to do that.
    > But, now I have had to change the functions to
    > _global.getRaterRatingData = function(result)...

There must be something else going on that you haven't told
    us (or
    aren't aware of yet).
    > Any ideas as to why this is? I was not getting any
    errors

How did you test for that? Did you troubleshoot with a
    trace()
    statement, maybe?

  • My photos not sorted by date in photos

my photos are no longer sorted by date after change to photos when viewed in all photos. Also how do you change the order from oldest to newest down the screen. An option for black background would be nice.

The problems reported here occurred right after updating to iOS according to the users as TD mentioned.
It's a compatibility problem between iPhoto and iOS6 that the only workaround would be to possibly batch change the date of the photos in iPhoto . Therefore we'll have to wait for it to be fixed with either an iPhoto update or an iOS update, which ever Apple feels is the proper item to to be changed.
If they update iPhoto first (which is probably what they'll do) it'll be called an iPhoto problem.

  • Syncing iPad2 doesn't move all photos selected in iTunes from the PC folder.

In iTunes 10.5 I select a folder where I heve the photos to be sync to iPad2 and I select all sub-folders. On iPad some folders appear completly empty and others with just some photos. The number of photos identified ion iTunes after selecting the folders is correct (9470) but it passes much less. I've already cleared the iPod cahe file so iTunes can recreate it but the problem remains. This was already occuring before ugrading to iOS5 but it seams now is worst. Does anyone have experienced this situation?

From Germany with not perfect English:
I had similar problem. Files that were not transferred had either no file-ending (.tif and .jpg-files without these endings are not synct) or a wrong ending (.pdf for example).
And the Apple-Hotline told me, a next iPod-software-update would allow a better sorting photos on the iPod. (Actually you can not use folders in folders, and all Photoes are sorted by date; a little help may be a count-number at the beginning of the file-name: 01.... 02.... 03... This helps, however it is not a good work for so many photos as you have.)

  • ITunes doesn't see all photos in Adobe

Have 60GB iPod. 28GB music. I'm using iTunes 5.0 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0. I have 11,000+ photos so I've created three collections in PSE with 50, 300 and 900 photos in each. Syncing iTunes to these three collections, iTunes only sees 475 photos in one collection, 3 in another and zero in the third. It only syncs the found 478 photos. Why doesn't it see all of the photos in the three collections? I have deleted the iPod Cache folder then re-synced and this did nothing.

  • I have been working on a book and have 418 photos already in my book.  All of a sudden I cannot access the book format to see the multiple view, spread view, or single view.  I can no longer see my book although I still see the collection with 418 photos

I have been working on a book and have 418 photos already in my book.  All of a sudden I cannot access the book module and clicking on the multiple view, spread view, or single view does not take me back to the book I have been working on.  I can no longer see my book although I still see the collection with 418 photos under collections.  What I do see is a blank template for a new book and I can't find the unfinished book I started with 418 photos.  It is like the new empty template is somehow covering it up.  How do I get back to the book I have been working on?

Is it possible you mistakenly clicked on a [Clear Layout] button?
But a great hint is- Always click on the [Create a Saved Book] button, early in your new book design.
Then you have a permanent link to the book in the Collections panel. (In addition to the standard collection of your selected images)
Note: a Book Collection shows an icon that looks like a book.
Every time you come back to edit the book, open the Book Module by clicking on the white arrow that appears on the end of your Book Collection title. (The title as saved)
Re-opening a book without using the "Saved Book" option can have unpredictable results.
A "Book" Collection is like a "Smart Collection" because anything you do to the book design, change pages, change images, etc,  is automatically updated in the Saved Book collection.

    Thanks for your comments
Several of our iPhone users in the UK reported the problem this morning, and as the Apple fan in the office I've got the job of resolving the issue
The original Excel was an old .xls file, but I have saved it as a .xlsx and the problem still appears
I haven't spoken with our developer yet, but I assume he has created the Excel file using some programming tools rather that directly using Excel
In the meantime I have created a simply spreadsheet with 8 cells contain values
In the first 4 cells, I have formatted them using Currency, and have used the currencies USD, DEM, GBP and CHF
In the remaining cells I have formatted them using the Accounting option, using the same currencies
When I review the spreadsheet on the iPhone (or iPad), the first 4 remain the same yet the last four all show the £ symbol
I have now changed the Region Format of the iPhone to United States, and when viewing on the iPhone the bottom 4 values are now all showing the $ sign!
If I had created the spreadsheet I would have put the Currency code in a seperate cell and purely used a numeric format for the number, and there would be no issue.  That might be the only solution
Yes, the Director has the full MS Excel app on his Windows 8 device, but I can't expect all of our clients to go and do the same, in business many of them will have the iPhone
We may have to change the way we produce the report because of Apple's failings here, and it's not the first time that we have had to change something because Apple devices can't display them properly
In business, submitting a potential job contract only for the recipient to get the wrong idea of the costs is a major concern

  • "All Photos" album order mixed up after restore (device change)

I recently had to back up and restore an iPhone 6 to a new iPhone 6.
I did a full backup to iTunes, then restored to the new iPhone 6 from that backup.
Everything was restored, including all photos... (I have iCloud Photo Library turned on)... EXCEPT in the "All Photos" default album on my phone, the photos are not in the usual date order.  They are all mixed up, mostly in large consecutive chunks, but with some individual photos randomly dispersed.  No pattern that I can see otherwise.  It looks like: (Jan-Mar 2010)--(Apr 2013-Nov 2013)--(Apr-2010-Feb 2013)--(Dec 2013-Feb 2014)--(Apr 2014-Sep 2014)--(Feb 2015 to today).  Something like that.
The "Photos" tab, where you see collections, years, etc, is in date order.  On iCloud.com, it is in the right order in the "All Photos" album.  However, it is in the *wrong* order on my iPad, where I also have iCloud Photo Library turned on.
    What I have tried:
    1) Turning off, then turning back on iCloud Photo Library beta.
    2) Full erase and restore from iCloud
    3) Full erase and restore from a new backup
One more option would be to try restoring from the backup I made before the new iPhone 6, but then I would lose changes since then (about 2 weeks), and I would rather try to avoid that.
Has anyone seen this before?  Why is this happening, and what else can I try to fix the order?  I saw another thread about out of order events, but this seems different.

I have noticed this as well. The actual dates in the meta data of the photos are correct, however they are displaying completely out of order in 'All Photos' in iOS and OSX Photos.

  • ALL PHOTOS album not sorting by date???

For some reason the ALL PHOTOS album is not sorting itself by date and time of when the photo was taken. They appear very random!
I don't know why this is happening. The VIDEOS album is sorting properly by date and time of when it was taken. The BURSTS album is sorting fine too.
It would be nice if there was an option to sort the ALL PHOTOS album by date. I know you can select the PHOTOS tab at the top and see photos sorted by date and time and place but I primarily use the ALL PHOTOS album and it just looks messy when it's not sorted properly. This was my go to in iPhoto and it was always sorted and images were easy to find.
Anyone know of any work arounds?
    Thanks in advance
    j

The FAVOURITES and PANOS albums also sort by date and time too. So all the albums sort by time and day except the ALL PHOTOS album! Seems very strange! What's even odder is that the date range listed at the top of the ALL PHOTOS album would suggest that they are sorted by date!
Apple I hope you SORT this out soon

  • Change duration of all photos

How do you change the duration of all photos? I have over 100 photos in my movie, and they automatically import at a default length of 5 sec. Is there a way to change the default import setting for clip/photo duration? Or is there a way to batch change all photos in my movie to a set duration if I want them all to be the same length? Rather than changing the length of each photo individually...

There is a problem with the photo settings for very short clips from stills. The Ken Burns setting goes wonky for clips less than 18 frames -- not just the zoom extents, but number of frames, also.
While you can set a still to a minimum of three frames (0:00:03), you cannot do it from the Photo Settings dialog box -- and you can only make the settings one clip at a time.
If you double-click on a frame (or control-click and choose "Show Info"), you'll get a "Clip info" dialog in which the clip's duration can be changed to 0:00:09 frames. But you may have to change your work-flow habit just a bit. Select the target photo in the media panel. When the Photo Settings box appears, uncheck Ken Burns, reduce the duration slider to minimum, and zoom and position the shot as desired. Then click "Apply" to place the still photo on the clip viewer. Once your photos are on the clip viewer, double-click them (one-at-a-time) to open the Clip Info window for that clip. Set your intended duration and move on to the next one.

I have imported all photos and videos from my iPhone 5S into Aperture ver.3.4.5 and now cannot find them. I thought I could open a panel showing all imports and merely list them chronologically, but I don't see how to do this.  There are over 1800 photos and about 100 videos, any help to locate where they've gone would be appreciated.

Try to search with a Smart Album for photos and videos taken with an iPhone:
File > New > Smart Album:
Add an EXIF rule fro the "Add Rule" drop down menu: EXIF
and set it to "Camera Model includes iPhone".
Set the scope of the search to "Library"
If there are any iPhone images or videos in your library at all, this search should find them.  Then ctrl-click any of the items and select "Show in Project" from the contextual menu.
Generally, Aperture should be showing your last import in the "Last Import" smart album in the "recent" section". And the "projects" view can be sorted by date, so you should see your recent imports.
You may want to check all search fields, if searches are active.
