Alsa playback rate issue

Well, after a few stints with Gentoo (too much compiling for THIS machine, great distro overall though) and Debian (not a fan...), I'm back to Arch, which I've used since '08. Easily a tie with Gentoo for my favorite distro, and it flies on this machine. However, I have the first issue I simply have NOT been able to resolve, and it's with sound. Very strange issue, too.
After I got the OS installed and a user created, one of the first things I installed was, of course, alsa-utils. I ran alsaconf, it (as always) found my onboard sound, no problem. (FWIW, it's using snd-intel8x0, according to modprobe.d/sound.conf) However, I ran into the first issue I have ever had with this, regardless of distro. When I try to play _anything_ through the console, be it pianobar for Pandora, or ogg123 for my music, I get this error:
ao_alsa WARNING: sample rate 44100 not supported by the hardware, using 48000
Mind you, Daft Punk sounds kinda neat like that, it's obviously not what I'm going for. The strangest part of it all, is that Gstreamer plays everything just fine. Rhythmbox / Pithos (buggy, but working) play the songs right. Whether it's properly re-rating it, or it has a way to bypass the "hardware" issue that I've never had before, I'll never know. All I know is, I can't use my beloved terminal if I want to, and to me that's a bit of a disappointment,
I've Googled this, and pretty much turned up nothing, so I'm now turing to our great community to tell me whether I've overlooked something, or if I should go bug report. Only thing I ask here is that if you respond with "RTFM", at least tell me WHICH manual, because all of 'em I've read tell me nothing useful. Thanks guys!

Unfortunately, this is more of a "me too" than anything constructive. I recently set up a plug device (pogoplug) connected to an external USB sound card, and am having a similar issue (specifically with pianobar). I tried switching to pulse audio as my backend with:
[nogoma@freya ~]$ cat /etc/libao.conf
default_driver=pulse
This works (uses pulse), but pulseaudio runs like a dog on this machine (audio is extremely choppy). I think it's doing a better job of resampling, but the audio is actually too choppy for me to tell. It may simply be the answer that the hardware in this machine is insufficient to handle the resampling, but the reason I tried pulseaudio to begin with is that I can't seem to configure alsa to resample the audio to 48000. That is, the USB soundcard only supports this rate, but I'm sort of expecting that libao provide alsa w/ the 44100 rate, and alsa should handle the resample to 48000. I guess it's unclear to me where the resampling should occur; in libao? In alsa?
My current asound.rc is:
[nogoma@freya ~]$ cat /etc/asound.conf
pcm.!default {
type plug
slave {
pcm "hw:Pro"
channels 2
rate 48000
pcm.dmixer6 {
type dmix
ipc_key 2342
slave {
pcm "hw:Pro"
channels 6
period_time 0
period_size 4096
buffer_size 262144
rate 48000
(This is admittedly hacked up from various sources). Should the default device be advertising a rate of 44100, and the dmix device 48000, and alsa should resample then? Basically, it seems like libao is trying to produce a 48000 rate that ALSA is expecting, but doing it poorly (audio definitely has a "too fast", chipmunk, effect to it), but not really sure where I should be poking to fix... Maybe the answer is finding a different sound device that supports 44100 natively (but, I'd presumably have the same issue if I had an audio source that was a different rate again!). That, or put some beefier hardware in there and use pulseaudio...

  • Converting playback rate in third party software rendered specifically from AEcc

i've been having issues with certain codecs that are rendered from aecc.
    prores (family) & Uncompressed.
From time to time we need to make elements with different frame-rates. so we use a tool from fcp called cinema tools to make conversions for speed without going back to AE, which basically changes playback rate of the clip to 23/24/25/29.97 in respect.
However this method is now proving an issue since CC.
i think its something on the encoding on the metadata thats locking the option to make the changes in cinema-tools. but the animation codec renders are fine?!!!
The work around i have with this is once i render from AE i open up Quicktime then export out again as the same codec. which makes it fine to convert there after. any help would be great”

    Hi Rick,
unfortunatly this method didnt work either.
I tried doing a test by adding to render queue direct and adding to Media Encoder from AE
No changes still locked out of converting the file in cinetools.
I also tried putting the file into media endcoder as a independant file without AE open, but again no changes.
However once i converted it via Quicktime player pro. It was perfectly fine.
It may be to do with the Proress file encoding.
Its fine with animation codecs from both AE renders and media encoder.
who knows what gremlin is trying to stop it from changing the attritubes.

  • DVCPro HD frame rate issues

I'm sure that this question has been asked before, but I performed a couple searches and couldn't find a thread to perfectly answer it.
I have a tape that was shot (with the Pansasonic HDX900, shot to tape and not P2) at two formats, 720/24P and 720/60P. Most of the tape was shot at 24P, but the cameraman shot a few minutes shot at 60P to create slow motion. Both 24P and 60P are on the same tape. I am capturing directly from the camera, not from a deck. I have a couple issues:
1.) My device control through FCP does not seem to be working, so I can only capture with "capture now." My device control setting seems to be right (DVCPro Firewire), and I've tried to restarting FCP and the camera. It doesn't seem like this is a trash-the-prefs issue, so does anyone have any thoughts? I have driven the camera's deck through FCP before.
2.) What is the best way to work with the different frame rates? Right now it captures at 60P no matter which capture setting I have it set at (when shot at 24P it duplicates frames to make it 60P). Is this a result of mixing formats on the same tape?
    I'm a little lost, thanks.
    Stef

It doesn't have that function and after consulting the manual (again) I am beginning to believe that playback control is only possible internally to the camera, rather than externally from another device. It doesn't explicitly state this, but the manual DOES specifically mention the record start/stop functions but has no mention of playback start and stop.
That said, the larger issue at the moment and for the future is the frame rate issue.

  • Frame rate issues when displaying video on 50" Plasma

I've been using  my Mac Mini (Late 2009) as a media centre since I bought it in Dec 2009. Until recently it's been great working with everything I throw at it.
Over the last two weeks though I've noticed issues with lower frame rates and jerky video performance. When I try to watch a film full-screen on my 50" tv I get a much reduced frame rate to the point that I'm using it less and less as a media centre. When I run them windowed the frame rate issue is still present but less apparent than when I run it full screen.
During full-screen playback my processors are at 85%-90% capacity.
    System:
    Mac Mini 2009
    2.53 Mhz
    4gb Ram
    Nvidia 3400`
    Mac OSX 10.6.7
    TV
Connected to Panasonic 50" plasma via HDMI (Mini-display port to HDMI)
    Screen resolution 1600 x 900.
I've been trying it with the digital version of Tron Legacy (m4v format, 1.84GB, 854 x 480) and more simple .avi files ripped from my dvd collection and get the same result.
    Action Taken
    I've reinstalled the 10.6.7 combo
Run ONYX to update to preferences etc
Ran TechTools to check any memory issues
Looking for any tips as this is really confusing me. My next step is to wipe the entire system and start again but I only did this a couple of months ago so I'm not keen to try again.

yeah I'm kinda limited, working with video for the web and I'm making revisions as to what has been already posted. The H264s are the originals per say as we are using a screen capturing program to obtain the video, I could re export the originals at a truer format, but with the resources I'm given, its not truly the option I can afford to take. I've found a workaround through using imovie of all things, but I rather be in FCP. I've done some editing with h264s before and this is the first time I've seen this happen, it kind of reminds me of when I had an editor a few years back digitize video that was drop frame as non-drop.

  • Frame Rate Issue Exporting .mp4 using h.264 compression

I really like the h.264 codec, but I have to use Quicktime Conversion, instead of QT Movie, when I export. I get a 'Codec Error' when I try to export as a QT Movie. That is the first problem, but I work around it.
The frame rate issue comes up when I try to export at larger screen sizes like 640x480. I have no problems at 320x240, but when I move up to the larger screen sizes the resultant QT mp4 plays back at 1/2 the specified frame rate, no matter what frame rate I try. It is really bizarre.
I tried lowering the key frame number to reduce the processor load on playback, but this had no effect. This was a tip I picked up here.
I tried lowering the bit rate, too. The only thing that 'fixes' it is to go back to the lower screen size.
The problem is reproducible when the file is played on other (faster) computers.
    Any ideas?

  • Exchange Rate Issue ( Ditect & Indirect Quotation )

    Dear,
    Alll Experts.
I am stuck up at one level , that is Exchange Rate issue.
User is creating shopping cart in SRM, Local Currency is USD and the goods is ordering from Canada ( CAD ).
While doing this amount is getting calculated   in - ( Negative ), And it is going to wrong approval for shopping cart approval.
When I see the TCURR table I am seeing there as negative sign in exchange rate because it is maintained in Indirect Quotation.
I want to calculate the same amount in postive figure.
How this can be achieve? If I maintain the same in direct quotation it will calculate positive but final amount will be bigger which is not proper one.
    Experts guidance will be helpful.
    Regards,
    Sharvari Joshi.

    Hi,
I gave the OB08 entries, not sure if you wanted me to explain the logic. Here it is..
Maintain 'Indirect quotation' from Local currency(USD) to Transaction currency(CAD) and 'Direct quotation' from Transaction currency(CAD) to Local currency(USD).
Direct quotation is where the cost of one unit of foreign currency is given in units of local currency, whereas indirect quotation is where the cost of one unit of local currency is given in units of foreign currency.
    Your local currency is USD:
    - Direct exchange rate: 1CAD = 0.92819 USD
    - Indirect exchange rate: 1USD = 1.08238 CAD
The following settings have been made in the standard system:
      - Direct quotation: ' '
    -   Indirect quotation: ' / '
Direct exchange rates do not have a prefix.
Your local currency is USD. You enter a business transaction in the transaction currency CAD. Until now, you had to use direct quotation to enter the exchange rate (1CAD =0.92819 USD). If you have defined '/' as the prefix for indirect quotation, you can also enter the exchange rate with indirect quotation (1 USD = 1.08238 CAD) by entering '/1.08238' in the exchange rate field.
Direct or indirect quotation can be maintained as the standard form of quotation for a certain currency pair. You use:
             - '1' for direct quotation
             - '2' for indirect quotation
If a standard form of quotation has not been specified for a currency pair, the system automatically uses direct quotation.
You make the settings in the IMG: General Settings -- Currencies -- Set Standard for Direct/Indirect Quotation per Currency Pair.
    Thanks
    Ganesh

  • How can I get variable playback rates for podcasts/audiobooks downloaded from iTunes?

When I download a podcast from the iTunes Store, say Criminal or 99% Invisible, it shows up on my iPod Touch 4G just as a regular song as part of an album--it's not classified as a podcast episode and there's no way to speed it up. When downloading Serial episodes from the Serial site, however, it came with the 2x/.5x speed options, which is extremely useful for me. I tend to download the episodes directly to my computer and then add them to my iPod Touch via MediaMonkey, so I'm not sure what the difference is. With audiobooks, I have to manually change the genre to audiobook and then add to my iPod via iTunes to have the variable rates, so it's really quite a hassle. Is there any way to make this more efficient?

If you want to access the variable playback rates then the media must be transferred such that its media kind is either podcast or audiobook. I've just tried moving an mp3 audiobook file over to my iPad using MediaMonkey and it has ended up in the right section of the device's library so it must be possible. My understanding is that media kind is a private iTunes property, not stored in the tag, so perhaps MediaMonkey has used Genre to decide which part of the iPad library it should add the file to.

  • Premiere Pro CS6 for Broadcast ProRes HQ Frame rate issues

I switched from Avid to work on a quick project with DSLR footage shot on the 5D Mark III at 29.97 psf which is not to be confused with 29.97i, a standard frame rate necessary for broadcast.   So the commercial spot was cut together, I punched in the proper settings (the very same settings that work with Avid 6.0+ and Final Cut Pro 7), and hit export.  When exporting either a Quicktime Animation or Pro Res file from Premiere Pro CS6, premiere creates a file with a faulty framerate, it comes out as 28.4 instead of 29.97.  I thought I was going crazy, but no, there are tons of documented experiences with 23.94 being 20-something, and on an on.  It seems as if Adobe did not do a good enough job with integrating the Pro Res codec into their software.  The only way I could get around it was to export to something else (Blu-ray H.264 at 29.97), and then re-encode that file to Pro Res HQ with either compressor or adobe media encoder.   The problem lies in exporting progressive footage as interlaced, it just completely screws up the frame rate.    The worst bit is that, I need Pro Res HQ for the distribution house for the commercial spots, they require the ProRes HQ MOV at 29.97i and if anything is off, I get charged for it.
Does anyone else have problems with Adobe Premiere lacking on the professional end? Or similar experience with this problem?
Just do a search for pro res frame rate issue premiere and you will see a lot of other users with the same issue.

  • Final Cut Pro dropped frame rate issue

Hi there, i currently shot a short film on the canon 5d mark II 30fps and i am trying to edit it in final cut studio 2. I have recently bought the new macbook pro 15inch 2gb module.
Now the canon footage is h.264 but when importing the clips into final cut pro 6 there is a lot of dropped frame rate issues but I thought this machine could handle HD footage?
Can someone more advanced than myself recommend what i am doing wrong or a work flow that i can work with to stop dropped frame rates and render times.
Last piece of information, the project will be entered in film festivals in the spring its only a 3 minute short and i have 5 folders of footage under 4gb each which was taken from the camera
    Thanks for your help.
    Michael

You are missing a huge conceptual point. If the file can not spool off of the hard drive fast enough, you get dropped frames. It isn't a processor or ram issue right now, it is a hard drive speed issue. Your system drive is overtaxed trying to run OSX, applications AND spool video. It just can't keep up. Changing the graphic card isn't going to help (and how do you change the card in a laptop?)
Get an external esata drive - with the new MacBookPro you'll need an esata Expresscard34 adapter for the computer to connect the drive. Firewire is not an option with that machine and USB2 will not cut it with high data rate formats like ProRes.
When you drop in the ProRes clip to the timeline and it tells you there is a mismatch, this means your preset for the timeline is something other than your clip. You WANT ProRes and you need the sequence to match your clip - tell the program to CHANGE the sequence to match the clip.
Video is not easy and it isn't inexpensive. Time to open up those manuals and your wallet!
    Good luck,

  • Video frame rate issues

When I watch flash videos (mostly in hd and from youtube or gametrailers) in full screen, the frame rate becomes noticably slower.  I have tried the 10.1 beta3 and this fixes the frame rate issue, but several times per video the image garbles.  Everything runs fine outside of fullscreen.  Otherwise I'm using Vista/Win7 64 bit with a 2.6 ghz Core 2 Duo, a radeon 4850 (latest drivers), and 2+ gigs of free memory.  When running 10.1 without hardware acceleration or earlier versions with default settings my cpu usage never goes above 20% on each core.  Does anyone know how to fix the image garblng or low framerates while in full screen?

    Hi again!
Hum ... that´s not as simple as it could be!
That way i´ll have to capture twice?!
There must be another way of doing it , i don´t think Avid can do it and FCP don´t .
As i told you i use both systems and i know they´re limitions (or i think i know!), but it´s strange because Avid Xpress DV 3.5 (from the age of stone ) do it in a blink ... ok ... found an FCP limitation!

  • External sound card sample rate issue

After installing Yosemite I am having problem with Sample Rate settings on my external audio interface. It was working perfectly before the upgrade.
The issue is that the sample rate on my system is set to 44.1 Khz. When a new application attempts to access the audio card it plays but breaks up. This is indicative of a sample rate issue so I tried to set the rate to 48 Khz and then back to 44.1 Khz. Once I do this the system works properly until another application tried to use the card and I have to repeat the same process over again. While it DOES work it is not correct functionality and there is obviously something wrong.
At first I thought is was just my system until my friend also commented on it happening to him too.
I am using an RME Fireface UFX with the latest drivers issued on October 8th of this year.
My friend is using an M-Audio unit and he is finding the same issue.
I have already checked everything in Audio / Midi Set-up control and reinstalled the drivers for my audio interface. I also looked for any new settings to Yosemite to see if there was something new that might affect this. No luck and no leads on where to look for the next option.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi,
The  sound card do not support all sample rates. Which sample rates your sound card support you will find in the the manual.goto help in the toolbar select find examples and search for sound Open the Sound Input to File.vi file. This will give you a template for recording sound. You have to set the sample rate then open a sound file for write.
Please post a sample VI that you have created.

  • QT Pro 7.0.4 playback rate problem

Since I updated to QT Pro 7.0.3, (I have QT Pro 7.0.4) I have problems with playback rate with most of QT .mov files.
Recently if I want to save anything in QT .mov file, Iike from AfterEffects 6.5 or FinalCut Pro 5 or even in QT Pro 7.0.4, most of time it won't properly make the saved file playback in normal 29.97/30 frames per second rate. No matter how hard I try to preset the FPS rate to 29.97/30 frames per second before I save a .mov file, it'll still playback like 1 frame per 6/8 seconds or something like that!!! The same saved file can play very smoothly in my schools PowerMac G5 comperters, so I know it shouldn't be the codec problems. Now I cannot even watch some saved or stream .mov file from the net because QT Pro has same playback problems with them as well.
I don't understand what's the problem with my QT Pro. However, none of my previously saved QT pro 7.0.1/7.0.2 .mov files has playback problems at my PowerBookG4. Can someone please help?

I just saw my pervious post, it seems like it didn't included the crucial information of my PowerBook G4 like I did on this one.
Anyway, I usually used H.264 for my FinalCut Pro 5 saves, and use "none compressed" on all my AfterEffects 6.5 files. The dimensions I used for save files never over 720x480. Since I updated on Tiger, with paid QT pro 7, I never had any problems on saving movies, with early version 7.0/7.01/7.0.2, never even have problems watching and save any .mov files from the internet.
But recently, the playback drop frame rate really become an obvious problem, bugs me very much. I no longer has any control over playback files on my QT pro. Currently 9 out of 10 QT files from the internet has problem playing back on my QT Pro 7.0.4 player. I have Snapz Pro X 2, and it's the current version, but this drop frames problem also effects on the files saving on this program. Now I can no longer save .mov on H.263 or H.264 codec, QT on my G4 PB just refuse to playback on those .mov files created from my Machine. I only currently tried to use Sorenson3 codec and it works OK most of time. I haven't try to save .mov on other codec yet on my G4 PB use QT Pro...
However, like I said, I still have no problems playback my saved QT Pro 7/7.0.1/7.0.2 files that I created on my current Pro 7.0.4 player. I also find out that all the "problemetic" files that cannot play on my QT Pro and my PB can play totally smooth on my school's G5 PowerMac. I don't really understand what's the meaning of my problem, but does this has something to do with my PB or maybe corrupted QT Pro program? I did uninstall and reinstalled the QT Pro and all it's related files on my PB, but still, nothing works after that either.
Because I did upgrade my ram to 1 GB (it was 512 MB), at one point I thought maybe it was the bad ram caused all the problems, but then when I changed back to my previous ram cards, my QT Pro 7.0.4 still refuse to work properly.
I really have no idea on this anymore. Should I just try to reinstall Tiger and see what happened? That's the last thing I can think of...

NO clue however what/how to check. Any ideas or experience?

Yes I have the latest drivers and everything. Even on the latest release of Premiere Pro CC 2014, I have the same issue. It is so strange being that the high end sound card should be able to do this much better and faster than my system processor. I would like to use the benefits of ASIO for Everyhting, not only mixing 5.1. Anyone else try a similar setup?
