An idiot speaks..........

.........the idiot being me.
I have bought the genuine iPod AV cable. This has three connectors - red, yellow and white. My TV has only two inputs - yellow and white. When I connect up (yellow and white) it works perfectly except that the picture is in black and white. I have worked out (doh) that yellow is the video output and I can get sound with either the red or white.
I have tried both PAL (I'm in the UK) and NTSC but both come up in black and white.
Any ideas, please?

I can partly answer your question, for the audio part - red means Right Channel and white means Left Channel i.e. Stereo, your TV only have one input i.e. Mono. So you need a RCA splitter to plug with your TV and connecting with both Red and White, otherwise, you can only hear either the Right channel or the Left Channel, with the splitter - it will convert the Stereo singal from your iPod into Mono.
Very likely your TV is PAL system, is there a way to set the video mode of your iPod to PAL from NTSC

  • Problem using Windows Media Player 10 to put music on my Muvo V

    <FONT face=Century size=3>Please Help
I hvae just bought a Creative Muvo V200 GB. I have tried using Windows Media Player 0 to load songs onto it. It goes through the motions and syncs ok and when I check 'removable' on Windows Media it shows that the songs are on there. However when I turn the MP3 Player on it registers 'no music'
I tried wiping the player by downloading the firmware and starting from scratch but still get the same problem.
Just don't like the layout of Creative so would really appreciate some advice on how to fix Windows Media.
    Thank You

Thanks for that piece of information. Player is definitely working as I have about 20 songs on it through realplayer.
Put a folder of new songs on desktop and a shortcut to my Muvo V200 but when I try to drag and drop it won't let me. All songs on the Muvo are in the root folder. Am I doing it the proper way? I'm afraid I'm a bit moronic when it comes to computers so if you can be patient perhaps you might like to send it again to me idiot speak.

  • Typical work flow for porting c/c++ libraries?

I'm new to the whole Alchemy world and I'm also very rusty regarding my knowledge in C/C++ (which was never that good to begin with). This is making my experimenting with Alchemy somewhat difficult, since I don't know if the problems I have are related to me not understanding the C-compiling process or the library I'm trying to compile not even being possible to compile using the Alchemy gcc. I've managed to compile some of the samples in the Alchemy download and some "Hello world" level code of my own. But I've yet to fully understand the process of compiling an arbritary C-library to an swc. So, what I'm hoping for is for you guys that have more experience with this to give some pointers about the whole process by answering my questions below.
    1. Are there any indicators one can look for in C-libraries to determine if they can be successfully ported? (e.g. only use ANSI-C libs)
    2. What would be the typical work flow for porting a C-library after having downloaded it's source? How do you go about starting to build the C<-->AS3 interface? Do you dive into gluegen immediately, or write the glue.c by hand?
    3. When should one do ./configure; make etc. to compile a library and when does one simply use gcc alib.c...?
    4. Do you have any examples of simple C-libraries one could try to port? With simple I mean libraries that don't have any external dependencies to other libraries and have a relatively small source (say 5-10 files or something).
Feel free to chip in with any answers you may have. And since I'm a n00b, please use idiot-speak as much as possible

    Thks for ur reply Jens.
But still it not very much clear to me.
Can you please throw some light in the bellow sinerio :
Let say I want to build an sample  music player application in Linux  which will be having  following module
    1) GUI : which contain one button : say  PLAY
    2) Event handler :  for the click event of PLAY Button
3)Plugin for playing music : code wich actually plays the music
So GUI that is button if devolop in FLASH/FLEX
Event handler module will be written in Action Script
Plugin will be written in C which will use gstreamer framework APIs in turn . So these plugin API's should get called from Event Handler i.e Action Script code And here is the place where binding from FLASH to C API's is requried.
So in the above senirio the actual execuable of the application will be nothing but swf file only.
Can I use Alchemy as a glue  for binding FLASH & C??
Plz correct me if I am worng.
    Please share ur thoughts ...
    Thanks in Advance

  • E61 & Exchange Server

I have been trying in vain to get my E61 to download my email from Exchange Server. Like many others it seems that although it works for a while, it stops thereafter and refuses to synch anymore.
I have spent all day trying to find out more about this problem and it seems to be that the web server certificate is the problem. I have read here and elsewhere how to get the relevant certificate from my Small Business Server 2003 installed on the E61 but without success.
Nokia certainly don't seem too aware of the problem as all the possible solutions I've found are elsewhere and I can't get any of them to work for me.
Is there a tried and tested method for getting Exchange Server to deliver mail to my E61 and if so, could somebody please tell me what it is, in idiot speak if possible. If I can't get this thing to work then its going back to Nokia while Im still in the cooling off period.....
    dc

Another day gone and still no nearer to getting email to work with Exchange Server...
Nokia sent me this regarding installing the certificate but to be honest they didn't seem too clued up. They must be aware that a lot of people have been having problems with this phone but act surprised when I point this out..
I have now been advised to visit a Nokia repair/service centre.
Here is the body of the email they suggested I follow. I seem to just get a "attachment saved" message when I click on the file I transfer to the phone using file manager on pcsuite..
"Your handset requires the certificate to be in the ‘DER encoded binary X.509’ format and saved with the ‘.cer’ file extension. If the root certificate on the Exchange Server is in base64 format it will need to be converted before it can be installed on the phone.
The following steps will allow you to convert a certificate from base64 format. Please note that this requires administrator access to the Exchange Server.
    1. Open the root certificate on the server in base64 format so that you can see something similar to the below:
    -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----
    VQQGEwJaQTEiMCAGA1UECBMZRk9SIFRFU1RJTkcgUFVSUE9TRVMgT05MWTEdMBsG

    FLgsY+QtxYo=
    -----END CERTIFICATE-----
    2. Cut and paste this into notepad and save this file with the .cer extension, i.e.
    3. On a Windows PC, double-click on the file you created. A certificate application will start. Select the ‘Details’ tab. Now press the ‘Copy to File…’ button to start the ‘Certificate Export Wizard’ and press ‘Next’.
    4. Select ‘DER encoded binary X.509 (.CER)’ and press ‘Next’. Continue to save the file with any name like . Make sure the filename has a ‘.cer’ extension.
    5. Click finish.
To install the certificate on the phone, transfer it to the handset and go to Menu, Office, File Manager. Open the folder that contains the certificate and select it. The device will start to import the certificate."

  • "r u sure" - Language issues

This post is not programming specific, but please bear with me...
A poster recently reacted (in a manner described by another as being a "flame") to the style of language used in a previous post, calling it "idiot speak". The sentance "r u sure?" caused a bit of a stir in that the non-use of dictionary English was frowned upon.
This got me wondering about the relationship between natural language and programming language, and specificaly about the influence of contemporary use of language on programming style.
The original poster of "r u sure" may either be very efficient or he may be lazy, and his code may be agile or it may be a sticky mess. On the other hand, the objectioning plaintiff in this case may either be meticulous or cynical, and his code could be elegant (if not eloquant) or it could be bloated. These personal differences emphasize an underlying difference in values and perception, and these factors may greatly influence one's coding style. The extent to which this influence is exerted may finally determine the qualities of a compiled program. It may ultimately be said that 'a person who uses language such as "r u sure?" in daily conversation is more likely to write faster but weaker code than a person whom strives for the correct usage of a natural language in conversation'.
I would say that if code were written in Shakespearean days, the language structure would most certainly have been impossibly tedious compared to what it is today. The underlying logic structures would have been less robust than they currently are because many modern algorythms are based on mathematical discoveries made after that time. One wonders what the databases would look like if written in an ancient language such as Latin or Egyptian.
I would like to hear your comments.

IMHO those youngsters are used to that silly SMS and
chat speak, so that'sI think this is a bit of a misconception. SMS is slang not a "new language" I agree with that.
thus it is actually a slang dialect from a particular region. In fact it is
worse than that because SMS actually seems to devlove into a
language that only the two people communicating can understand. I disagree with that; IMHO sms-notation was born because of the maximum
length of the message that could be sent: 160 characters or so. People
were quite creative in substituting single digits for an entire syllable that
sounded similar. In the Dutch language people are over-creative with that,
e.g. 'FF' stands for 'just a moment': 'FF' being a shortand for 'effen', (multiple effs)
which is sort of slang for 'eventjes', which basically translates to 'just a moment'.
Similar things happen to just phonetic parts of words (i.e. not syllables),
i.e. 'w8' means 'wacht' ('wait' in English, the similarity is just a coincidence).
So in SMS speak 'wait for a moment' in Dutch is translated to 'w8 FF'.
When enough room for editing a proper text is available I find this SMS
stuff terrible. I do think though that youngsters are more familiar with this
type of notation and I think they will go further than I just sketched.
    kind regards,
    Jos

  • Documents Folder Suddenly EMPTY!

What would cause the contents of my "documents" folder to suddenly disappear?
I had about twenty large folders in there, and the odds of accidentally highlighting them all and sending them to the trash is unlikely.  Of course, anything is possible.
I seriously doubt that I did that ... but I can't imagine how else everything in my documents folder would suddenly disappear.  Can anyone suggest?
    -John
ps.  I did have everything backed up, but I still want to know why it disappeared in the first place.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone.
Holy smokes ... here it is one day later ... and the folder is empty again!
I recovered all my stuff from Time Machine a day or two ago.  I saw it all in the folder with my own eyes.
Today I clicked the "documents" folder in the finder sidebar ... empty.
Then I went to Macintosh HD and clicked on my username and the document folder ... also empty.
I searched for one of my document files in finder ... nothing.
I also ran Disk Utility ... all clean.
I downloaded, updated, and ran VirusBarrier X6 ... all clean.
This is obviously not an issue of me accidentally deleting the files now.  Something unusual is definitely going on.
    Please, can anyone help?
    -JOHN
ps.  If you have advanced processes you want me to go through, please use 'idiot-speak' and that's my native language ... ie, not hip to Mac lingo beyond folders and basic prefs.

  • Literally the worst customer support experience I've ever had to deal with -- Why don't they let their customers speak to supervisors on demand?

Call 1: I spoke to them to see if I was eligible for an upgrade. It turned out they had accidentally counted a temporary phone switch to an old device as an upgrade. The representative was extremely slow minded and took over an hour to read through my notes and process what I was saying happened, consulting with his supervisor multiple times. He claimed to have noted everything and told me I had to go to a verizon store to verify in person that I was still using my original phone, and that then I would be able to get an upgrade immediately.
Trip to the store: Drove an hour only to be told by the store rep that there were NO NOTES on my account about the issue and there was nothing he could do to help me and that I'd have to call customer support again. The store was closing in 20 mins and customer support seems to take 45 minutes minimum to resolve anything, so I left.
Call 2: Asked a woman to speak to a supervisor about the guy who wasted 2+ hours of my life and gas money. She put me on hold for a long time, came back and said they were all busy right now, would I like to leave my complaint with her? I said no thank you, I will keep waiting. She said ok, and proceeded to hang up.
Call 3: Asked a different woman to speak to a supervisor, she put me on hold for a long time and then told me that since I wasn't an authorized user I could not speak to one... lol ok. Had a family member call and authorize me.
Call 4: Asked a guy to speak to a manager. He insisted on taking the complaint himself. Why would I trust someone to take a complaint about their colleague possibly sitting a few desks away when many of them have proven to be incredibly incompetent already? It sounded like we were making progress... then he hung up too.
Call 5: Asked yet another woman to speak to the manager. She demanded a reason, I told her it was to make a complaint and she told me about a dozen times that the managers would just tell her to take the complaint. I insisted, she refused... finally I threatened to close all of our accounts unless she let me speak to a manager. She said they couldn't right now since the office was closing soon, but that one would call me within 24-48 hours. I'd bet my life savings that never happens. At that point I tried to talk to her about the original upgrade issue, and she said her system had suddenly crashed and that I'd have to call back the next day...  Seriously???
Absolutely unreal how horrible their customer support is. Will be switching to T-Mobile immediately.

Having worked in customer service, I have some experience with this kind of situation.  Reps are typically trained to make all attempts to handle complaints by themselves, because there are obviously many more reps than supervisors.  They're usually REQUIRED to fully authorize the account and to get the whole situation from the customer prior to referring you to a supervisor.  One of the biggest problems is that many customers think that demanding a supervisor is a way to guarantee you will get what you want.  If the reason for your request to escalate isn't a valid one, the supervisor won't give in to you either.
There are plenty of times in my own experience, especially as a brand new rep out of training, that I took a long time to research and get an understanding of the issue.  Yes, I wasn't moving at light speed, but that doesn't make me an idiot.  It means I was trying to gather as much info s possible to try and deal with the issue. But I had plenty of customers tell me I was stupid and to transfer them to my supervisor, simply because I took longer than their patience could tolerate to get all the details I needed.
I have never had a job that I executed flawlessly day in and day out.  Maybe you have and that's why you can't tolerate a person taking a little longer to wrap their head around the issue, but I'd rather doubt it.
I also don't think you will find reps who work at light speed and utilize a magic wand to fix people's issues at T-Mobile, either, but I guess it never hurts to try.
Just to clarify: I do not work for Verizon and never have.  I worked for a residential phone and internet company.

  • Don't be an idiot like me and forget to check the basics...

Had to share this story of assuming a 10.6.1 update problem when it was me (I think it was anyway).
I upgraded to 10.6.1 on Thursday when I was out of the office. I have been having issues with adding attachments into Entourage (I started a topic on this last week), and I hoped they would fix it in 10.6.1. I also have a Sierra Wireless USB Modem that wasn't working that great. (The Entourage issue is still not fixed, and I haven't checked the Sierra modem yet.)
Anyway, I returned to my office Friday morning. In my office, I have a 1920x1200 Dell LCD display. So, when I take my laptop to the office, I plug in the power adapter I have there, then the display cable, the USB cable that connects to the monitor's hub (and in turn connects to my wired keyboard and printer) and the speaker mini-cable for the monitor.
I immediately discover that I cannot close the MBP lid without the machine going to sleep. On Wednesday (before the upgrade), I could keep the lid closed and the machine wouldn't sleep. I could wake it from the USB keyboard or mouse. After 10.6.1, nope. The lid had to be open to keep the machine awake. This wasn't horrible per se - the only downside was that with mirroring the built in display on my Dell display, I had to run the Dell at the laptop's screen resolution (1440x900) - so the Dell wasn't a crisp image. Not a huge problem but definitely a step back in my mind.
I tried not to work on this too much so I could focus on my actual job. But I did try a bunch of things all unsuccessfully:
    1. Scoured the forums. Did find some issues with external displays and SL, but they were more related to displays not working at all. Nothing about sleep and closed lids.
    2. Tweaked the energy settings to keep the machine awake, etc.
    3. Even briefly tried an insomnia program to force the machine to stay awake, but that didn't seem to work either. (I didn't really want to have to run this permanently, so I deleted it pretty quickly.)
    4. Tried VGA instead of DVI.
    5. Tried an entirely different Dell display I happen to have (same 1920x1200 resolution, but an older model).
And then I got a battery life warning. After 4 hours, my MBP told me I was at 20% batter life. Huh? Why is the batter discharging?
Oh, idiot! On Wednesday evening, I had taken the MBP to a conference room for our fantasy football draft. Normally when I take the power supply, I just use the brick and the small adapter that fits into it. I leave the cord part plugged into the wall. But I needed the longer cord, so I took the whole thing. Apparently, when I got back to my office, I never actually plugged the cord into the wall. I just tossed it behind the desk. I didn't run the machine at work again until after the 10.6.1 install.
So, I plugged in the adapter, and lo and behold, I could now close the lid of the MBP and run the external display at its native resolution - just like the entire past month on 10.5.8, 10.6 and now 10.6.1.
Here's the part that I wonder about: Is this a change of behavior? Has OS X always required a MBP to be externally powered to run an external display with the lid closed? I don't actually know. In fact, this is now a bit of a feature for me. When I leave work at the end of a day, I usually take my laptop home. I have been manually putting the machine into sleep before disconnecting it from the power, display etc. Now, I can just disconnect it. When I pull the power, the machine automatically sleeps if the lid is closed. By the time I unplug the other connectors, the machine has finished writing out the hibernation file.
Does anyone know if this is a change?
Just thought I would share this bit of folly. I was very relieved that this issue wasn't another 10.6.1 problem. And of course a bit embarrassed. But not so much that I couldn't offer up the cautionary tale.
(And before you file this away as a rookie error, I've been using computers for 30 years, know how to program, and I manage production for a video game company. Just shows that experience doesn't always mean you are smart!)

Nothing to do with being smart or not. Just an oversight based on a routine getting disrupted by some new excitement. So you got to learn something new (which is wonderful about disruptions to routines), and you thankfully shared it with the rest of us.
While it's easy to say it makes sense it would have to be plugged in to operate closed, I think it's more of an afterthought of it making sense than it having to be that way. I'm sure some would complain about it not allowing you to drain the battery in that way. I like that it wants to be plugged in as it probably needs the extra boost of power anyways.
    Again, thanks for sharing.

  • Idiot guide to ad hoc networking....

I'll get straight to the point. I used to have and XP PC and an XP Laptop (SP2). Try as I might I couldn't an ad hoc wireless network (802.11g) working, if I was lucky I got to share an internet connection, but I'm not sure how.
I have ditched the PC and got the Mac Mini detailed below. It does have Airport Express. I managed (very easily!) to transfer the files wirelessly from the old to the new. Now, if it is possible I would like to set up a network between the Mac and the Laptop (whihc has a wireless card) to share files and the internet connection plumbed into the Mac. Everywhere I look tells me this is simple. I, however, am getting very circular.
I am an idiot. I can waft a mouse with the best of them, but don't ask me to speak of File Transfer Protocals or CAT5 cables (let alone DOG6!).
Patronise me. If you need more information, tell me where I can find it and I'll post it.
    You've all been so kind.

    Ross,
A/ Connect the Mac Mini to the internet router via a ethernet cable to establish an internet connection.
B/ Turn on Airport on the task bar at the top of your screen.
C/ Go to System Preferences/Sharing/Services & turn on Personal File Sharing, Windows Sharing & FTP Access by checking the buttons.
D/ Click on the Internet Tab (next to Services and Firewall) & where it says share your internet connection from make sure the drop down menu says Built in ethernet then click on To computers using: Airport button & finally click the Start Button (ignore the warning and continue).
E/ Scan for your Mac Mini's wireless signal & ID on the PC & connect.
    Regards
    Steve.

Are we all idiots who doesn't know how to use the 5800XM or Nokia is making junk.
Nokia was my favorite brand but it's time to move on and find better product.
I can't be.ieve Nokia released junk phone like that full of bugs.
It will come back on them. What goes around comes around
    Shame on you Nokia....

Once upon a time, not to long ago, there was a very large and famous company from a small country that few people know much about. This company made phones. Lots of phones. Phones in all shapes and sizes. There were small, simple phones for people who had simple needs and who didn't know very much about the technology, very advanced phones which were more like computers for the technically-minded, and in between phones to meet the needs of almost everybody that had ever lived.
Unfortunately, the phones became a fashion statement and people started buy the very flashy phones to show how wealthy and chic they were, even though they didn't need the very flashy phones and didn't even know how to use them, and they never read the manuals. Soon, many thousands of people started to complain that their phones were not good enough because they didn't work properly. But the phones were, most of the time, broadly speaking, doing what they were programmed to do and the people who had bought them as status symbols simply didn't know how to use them correctly.
So they all lived unhappily ever after...

  • Has my iPhone 5's speaker blown?

This could be a stupid question or I could be right. I got my iPhone 5 a month or so ago. When I play a song of my iPhone 5 (without any headphones etc.) it sounds clear and seems ok. I notice there are two speakers on the iphone 5 near the headphone jack and if I cover my thumb over the right hand side speaker no sound comes out, shouldn't some sound be coming out of the other speaker?
Again, I can be totaly wrong and sound like an idiot or something could be wrong?

There is only one speaker on an iPhone.  The side you're not covering, when no sound comes out, is actually the port holes for the microphone.  Your phone is working fine.  Not an idiot, many people make that same mistake/assumption.
