"r u sure" - Language issues

This post is not programming specific, but please bear with me...
A poster recently reacted (in a manner described by another as being a "flame") to the style of language used in a previous post, calling it "idiot speak". The sentance "r u sure?" caused a bit of a stir in that the non-use of dictionary English was frowned upon.
This got me wondering about the relationship between natural language and programming language, and specificaly about the influence of contemporary use of language on programming style.
The original poster of "r u sure" may either be very efficient or he may be lazy, and his code may be agile or it may be a sticky mess. On the other hand, the objectioning plaintiff in this case may either be meticulous or cynical, and his code could be elegant (if not eloquant) or it could be bloated. These personal differences emphasize an underlying difference in values and perception, and these factors may greatly influence one's coding style. The extent to which this influence is exerted may finally determine the qualities of a compiled program. It may ultimately be said that 'a person who uses language such as "r u sure?" in daily conversation is more likely to write faster but weaker code than a person whom strives for the correct usage of a natural language in conversation'.
I would say that if code were written in Shakespearean days, the language structure would most certainly have been impossibly tedious compared to what it is today. The underlying logic structures would have been less robust than they currently are because many modern algorythms are based on mathematical discoveries made after that time. One wonders what the databases would look like if written in an ancient language such as Latin or Egyptian.
I would like to hear your comments.

IMHO those youngsters are used to that silly SMS and
chat speak, so that'sI think this is a bit of a misconception. SMS is slang not a "new language" I agree with that.
thus it is actually a slang dialect from a particular region. In fact it is
worse than that because SMS actually seems to devlove into a
language that only the two people communicating can understand. I disagree with that; IMHO sms-notation was born because of the maximum
length of the message that could be sent: 160 characters or so. People
were quite creative in substituting single digits for an entire syllable that
sounded similar. In the Dutch language people are over-creative with that,
e.g. 'FF' stands for 'just a moment': 'FF' being a shortand for 'effen', (multiple effs)
which is sort of slang for 'eventjes', which basically translates to 'just a moment'.
Similar things happen to just phonetic parts of words (i.e. not syllables),
i.e. 'w8' means 'wacht' ('wait' in English, the similarity is just a coincidence).
So in SMS speak 'wait for a moment' in Dutch is translated to 'w8 FF'.
When enough room for editing a proper text is available I find this SMS
stuff terrible. I do think though that youngsters are more familiar with this
type of notation and I think they will go further than I just sketched.
kind regards,
Jos

  • OS X Primary language issue

I have come across a very annoying language issue with my MBP.
I needed to set Chinese as the priority language in order to prevent iTunes from changing my chinese song names into weird characters thus ruining my album arrangement. But at the same time, it has created another problem that now every program's default language is Chinese.
Is there anyway to keep my song names intact while keeping the rest of OS X in English?

Is there anyway to keep my song names intact while keeping the rest of OS X in English?
You should be able to have intact song names regardless of your OS language, as long as your ID3 tags are converted to Unicode. See this page for some info:
    http://homepage.mac.com/thgewecke/mlingos9.html#itunes
In general, the language of any app can be made different than the OS language by doing File > Get Info > Language on the app icon and making sure that only the language you want is checked.

  • S820 came with no Play Store, also has language issue.

I bought an S820 in China and it has 2 problems that I cannot solve.  First, even after switching the laguage to English, much of the interface, apps, settings, etc. are still in Chinese.
Additionaly, this phone did not come with the Google Play Store installed, and I am not able to install it from the Play Store website.  Perhaps I'm doing something wrong due to the language issue, or perhaps there's some kind of license missing since this specific phone was intended for the Chinese market.
I've tried for several days to find a solution but I am coming up short.  I'd like to try a new ROM, but after searching all the various forums I can't seem to find one designed for this phone.
Can anyone please refer me to a ROM that will work for this phone, or otherwise suggest a solution?
    Thank you!

    Hi there,
Though am not an expert, will try to explain and share what I know. I have been updating my s820 to Android 4.2.2 (which is latest for this phone) ROM automatically provided by lenovo officially that means it's not rooted and no Gapps by OTA (over the air) system upgrade. They call this new one VIBE ROM and I find it fantastic!
The other way would be to manually download latest ROM from http://www.viberom.com/xiazai_s820_nk.html (sorry it's in Chinese and you must select appropriate phone, you may translate the website) into your computer, RENAME into update.zip, copy to external microSD card --> boot into recovery (from lenovo's 'system upgrade' icon), there are few yes/no and finally done!
You can also check this out http://www.needrom.com/phone-roms/lenovo/serial-s/s820/ for custom and some rooted ROMs.

  • Language issue

So I would like spotify to be all English. I have a computer with the language set to Dutch that I logged into a while back, and as far as I am aware it is logged out and hasn't been logged into since. Ever since then though I have random parts of spotify being in Dutch. All of my language preferences are set to English. All notifications I get on my phone from spotify are also in Dutch (language set to English). Is there a a way to resolve this? The image below is an example.

Try deleting cache and saved data on settings. Log in back and see if the language issue stills there. If not I'd suggest to reinstall the app on your phone.

  • Language issue for selection texts

    Hi All,
There is a auto generated program, for which I am facing a language issue.
When I logon the system in EN language, I can see the the selection text in english language.
However when I logon to system in DE language, it just displays the variable name in the selection screen.
When I click on the selection text, the following info msg is displayed: "Not translated texts from the original language DE be interfered".
What does this message mean? Can I view the selection text in English language when i am logged in DE language.
Since this is an auto generated program, I am not authorised to do the changes.
    Thanks

    Hi Rohit
Ask your basis team to give you authorization for these two authorization objects:
S_QUERY_ALL          Change, maintain and translate query
    S_QUERY_UPD         Change and Translate
If you have these authorizations you can go and change the translation in ABAP Query which is generated by using SQ01 tcode.
If you have the authorization for above mentioned authorization objects the nuse tcode :
SQ07 and you can translate your query.

  • Language issue in reports

    Hi all,
I am facing a strange issue.
I am having some greek and turkish data in master data - Vendor company code. I am able to see the greek and turkish language text when I check in "Maintain master data" of the master data info object- 0VEND_COMPC. The same is present in R/3 as well.
A query is built based on this Master data Info Object - 0VEND_COMPC. When the query is executed the greek and turkish text for vendor numbers doesnt display properly. The greek text displays as ##### . Some turkish text is visible but some characters in Turkish language also display as ####.
Can someone give some pointers as to how to solve this issue.
    Thanks in advance.
    -- Maddy

    Hi Handoko,
I have done the necessary setting that you suggested. Restarted the system and tried to execute the report.
But the problem still remains. Not sure y this is happening.
The language displays properly on web browser. It doesnt display in Excel (BEX ANALYZER).
Some suggest that we need to do language installation for Greek and Turkish languages in BW systems. But I dont think that will solve the problem, as this is some thing related to settings for Excel (Bex Analyzer).
Any other suggestions would be of great help.
    Thanks  in advance.

  • Language issue in Portals

    Dear CRM expert,
We are having internet sales application.
We have developed the new Order on behalf shop for employes for greek country. We had decided log on language for shops will be english.
Now when we lon on to the shop & browse the customer to place an order, the customer details are shown in Western european character set.
However the customer in R/3 is maintained in the Greek langauge & we expected to see the customer details in Greek langauge.
Could you any one let me know on how to get the customer details in Greek langauage in the OOB webshop without changing the langage setting in the portal.
    Thanks,
    Best regards,
    Sharana Bangari

    Hi Matthias,
I think the language handling and the mapping of default languages is application specific and should be done within the RM. In our case this available allready, since our WCMS system allready take care about that... So for a logged in user, we are able to create a language specific folder structure very nicely.
Our problem is the indexing by TREX. We wan't to make sure that every language version of the docment can be found when people searching. So in our case the perfect solution would be that TREX asks the RM for available languages in the repository and starts a crawler for each language available in the repository.
Something that I am not sure about is the presentation of the search results. Since the URL of the search result might point to a different language version than the logged in user has. So if the URL is
    http://server/irj/go/km/repsotory/Documents/File.pdf
this might result to a german document, even if the searched term is in the english document. So the language must be set in the search result. For example like this
    http://server/irj/go/km/repsotory/Documents/File.pdf?locale=en
This would be our preferred way to handle this issue. I think we will keep the virtual language folders until the new feature is available.

  • Language Issue in Repository Manager and T-REX

    Hi Everybody,
we are trying to implement a repository manager for SAP KM. Our systems stores documents language specific in a database. Now we are wondering how we should create a view to the documents, so that every document in each language is indexed by T-REX correctly. Lets say the internal view is something like this:
       /Documents
          ->File.pdf
      /Images
          ->Image.jpg
In this case File.pdf and Image.jpg can exist in different languages. So our question is, does T-REX create an index for each language available in the portal? If so, which would be very nice, how can we get the current language T-REX is using for indexing within our RM implementation?
Otherwise we have to create virtual TOP-Level laguage folders for each language in our database that would look like this
    /de
       /Documents
          ->File.pdf
      /Images
          ->Image.jpg
    /en
       /Documents
          ->File.pdf
      /Images
          ->Image.jpg
We try to avoid this, since File.pdf ist a single item with different language versions.
Does anybody know the best way to solve this?
    Kind Regards,
    Ali

  • Language issue in iTune

So I updated iTune to its latest version (10.1.1.4) and now it won't let me use traditional chinese as language of preference. I can set it to simplified chinese, but I can't read simplified chinese nor do I care to use that version. Any idea what's the problem?

  • [SOLVED]Libreoffice Language Issue

Basically I am having problems with my fonts not being in English in Libreoffice. I have tried using the libreoffice-en-GB and the libreoffice-en-US language packs but I'm still having problems. Any help would be appreciated!
    PIC: http://oi48.tinypic.com/2ca7at.jpg
Update: I was fumbling around with some of the libreoffice packages last night determined to find a fix and the issue turned out to be nothing related to the selected language package. Instead, I found out that when I remove the libreoffice-gnome package I was able to clearly see the menu text again. I am not entirely sure as to why this could cause issues but I figured I would let others know, just in case I'm not the only one.

@dshelley........many thanks for the updated post with your solution of removing the libreoffice-gnome package.
After many hours of searching and trying various suggestions (most assuming that the wrong language pack was being used) you came up with the goods.  Thank you!

  • My macbook keeps crashing, and now won't startup, not sure what issue is!?

I got a used macbook about 3 months ago, it's the second I've bought and had no issue with it up until about a month ago, when it started giving me the fatal error and saying "please restart your computer" and freezing up. I tried to run disk utility on it and it basically said my hard drive had fatal errors and it couldn't fix it. So I bought a new hard drive.  Got my hard drive today, put it in the macbook, reinstalled OSX Snow Leopard, and it ran fine for about 5 hours, and I was happy as can be... now suddenly, it has started doing this again, and it's really starting to p*ss me off because I've spent so much on a "recertified" macbook that apple won't fix without a crap load of money, and I'm not even sure what is going on with it..
I've tried to boot it in safe mode, and it acts fine for about a minute, and then any program I try to open it says it can't "find it" and shuts down. If I try to open system preferences to bring up the specs it immediately freezes and gives me the "hold down power button to restart" stupid thing.
When I restart it, sometimes it'll come up and then shut down, and other times it immediately pops up and says something about a fatal kernal error. If I can get it to do the fatal kernal error message again, I will happily post it on here so you can see what it says, but at this point I am seriously ready to just trash this pos and go back to using windows computers because this now makes 3 macs (two macbooks and a imac) that I've had that all start doing this, and it's baffling because I don't download stuff on the internet, etc. I mainly use my macs for recording music.
Also, don't know if this helps or not, but in the few instances where it does boot up and won't shut down immediately, if I click on say Apple>About this Mac.... as soon as I click on it, the screen goes blue, and then a few seconds later it comes back like it's just fine.
I don't know what all you guys would need to see anything, but last time it booted up I was able to get this information before it crashed again:
    OSX 10.6.8
    Model Name: Macbook
    Model Identifier: Macbook2,1
    Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16GHz
    Number of Processors: 1
    Total numb of cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4MB
    Memory: 2GB
    Bus Speed 667MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MB21.00A5.B07
    SMC Version (system): 1.17f0
    Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-001B6335249D
I know that's just the basic info under hardware but I couldn't get any further than that. It goes blank screen and shuts down.

You had three machines with the same exact issues.
So what have you done a month ago that is the same on the other two machines?
I don't have the original disks
    Model Identifier: Macbook2,1
There is something in common on all three machines, something you have done that is causing this issue.
My suggestion is to treat this as a malware infection, backup and systematically purge everything, reinstall 10.6 and only manually transfer files from backups.
Call Apple for the 10.6.3 White Snow Leopard disks your going to need them.

  • Adobe acrobat pro extended 9 language issues

    Hi!
Is there any conflicts/obstacles that may arise using an English version of this software for documents or purposes in other languages or does it support other languages?
If not, is there any way that I can convert an English language version of Adobe Acrobat Pro extended 9 to Swedish language?
The reason I ask is that I'm considering buying a used copy of Acrobat pro extended 9, but before doing so I need to know if I would be better off buying a dedicated Swedish version of this software.
    Thanks in advance
    Anders

    Thanks AbhigyanModi!
What I would like to do with acrobat pro extended 9 is for instance to convert a two-column glossary into Excel keeping the table format. Not sure if using English version will affect the text in the Swedish translation column or not. I've used Acrobat (Swedish version) to a minor extent at work so I'm familiar with some of its benefits, such as the "Copy as table" function.
I think ibuying this software straight from retail is quite pricey for my needs and that's why I considered buying a used English version of Acrobat Pro extended. But I'm not sure it's worth buying an English version if it will limit the useability for my needs.
    Cheers!

  • SQL Server reporting (SSRS) with SCCM. Language issue - how to change it?

My SCCM 2012 R2 server is setup on a Windows 2012 R2 server (English) but has non-English language pack installed.
I have the server working great with SCCM 2012 R2 working in English.
The reporting has turned out to be a bit of an issue as it is displaying the paths in the other language.
For example if I browse to http://servername/ReportServer and click to view the available reports the links are all non-English.
Also, if I go to the ConfigMgr console -> Monitoring -> Reports the names appear in English but if I click on any of them to view their properties and go to the security tab I can see the path is not English.
I want to, for the sake of some of the people that will be viewing/using the reports, change it into English.
Is there any relatively painless way to do this?
Changing the language preferences in Internet Explorer does not affect it as these appear to be hard coded.
    Appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Thank you. I had previously seen that page but unfortunately it did not resolve my issue.
It is quite frustrating as I can see the actual folders on my server in English (C:\Program Files\SMS_SRSRP\Reports) yet in the browser the folder names and URLs appear not in English.
Also looking at Reporting Services Configuration Manager it does not show any option to configure this. Arg!

  • Need help with languages issue in iOS app created in Flash Pro CS5.5

    Hello all,
I'm using Flash Pro CS5.5 on a Mac running Snow Leopard to create an iOS app by publishing with 'AIR for iOS' from inside Flash Pro. Everything works great except after I submit my app to the Apple App Store and it is approved, the App Store listing claims that the app is available in a ton of different languages including English, German, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, etc. Since this app is a word game and all the words are in English, this is a pretty significant issue.
If I view the binary details for the app in iTunes Connect, it shows that localizations are active for all of the different languages. This information is read from the .ipa file that is submitted.
If I unzip the .ipa file, I can see that folders have been created for all of the localizations (i.e. en.lproj, es.lproj, fr.lproj, etc.). If I delete any of those folders, the .ipa will give me a 'resources modified' error at install.
I have also tried setting the plist attribute 'CFBundleLocalizations' to 'English' by editing the 'app.xml'. I have verified that the attribute has been changed correctly but it does not solve the issue. All of the localizations are still active.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
