An interim thank you note to SAP, SDN, and Anton W ...

At the bottom of this page here:
https://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/EmTech/Bio-InformaticBasicsInRelationtoScriptingLanguagesu2009
I've finally posed a scripting language problem (Coding Problem 5) that even Anton may not be able to solve in a day or less.  (Up till now, Anton has been able to solve all presented problems in PHP very quickly.)
I don't know if Coding Problem 5 has a solution or not - I'm really curious to find out, assuming Anton is willing to continue to donate his time to this effort.
But in any event, I'd like to thank SAP and SDN for providing an environment where Anton and I can at least get this far working together.'
The WIKI has progressed to the point where I can start saying something specific about how Supply Chain Management is related to bioinformatics, and how SAP should start to try to establish a presence in this new vertical sector.
And also, of course, thanks to Anton ....with I could pay him full-time.  I'd make us both rich within two years.
BTW - if any of you have ideas about Coding Problem 5, please post them in the thread I've starrted in the Scripting Lanuahes Forum here:
OK - finally a bioinformatic coding problem that may not be so easy ...
This is the Forum where Anton has been posting his answers to Coding Problems 1-4 - there's a thread for each of them.

Hi Jan -
Thanks.

  • Thank you for scamming my Grandma and lying to me Verizon.

I recived the cool little upgrade your phone and recive a $100 GIFT CARD!!! It was sent to my number and mine alone, despite I had upgraded to a BB 8 months before. So my grandma decided to get into the world of smartphones. From my expirence BestBuy gives you anywhere from $25-100 off from Verizon stores SAME PHONE. We picked ours out and inquireid to the MANAGER of the local Clackamas BestBuy and she assures us they'll send us the code after we activate the phone and it would be sent to the device. Blindly we trust me assuming the manager must be one of the few people that work there who knows something. We wait 6 days and I see we have to buy the phone before the 30th so I figured turning it in ended by then. I called Verizon and the man on the phone assured me we had plenty more time to get it and do it and that the code would be sent to the device (Didn't bother to tell me when it ended even though I called concerned about it ending and not reciving the gift card). So time goes by and between that time I recive 3 new Droid X smart phones because THEY KEEP HAVING THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM.  The time exchanged decreased by 4 weeks between phones because the problems became more and more evident earlier on in the phones use (They also assured me each time I called their "Like New Phone" replacements we're just as good as the new ones.) Each time I took my time sending the package back and EVERYTIME they not only texted me that "I needed to return the device or recive a $500 payment on my bill" to mine AND both my grandmas phones BOTH. So time rolls around and I forget about the trade in deal due to my schedule and hers. I call them for the code (can't remeber the exact date) and ask for my code she gives me a FAKE CODE and sends me on my way. Again more time passes and I forget to do it. I tryed 2 weeks ago to put the code in and I find out its a fake code. I call them again and this time she gives me the REAL CODE but she knows the deal is over and lets me go as if nothing is wrong. Tells "Me oh thats showing up as expired let me do a report for you. I'll call you in two days." Now its today and no call from the lady and I had to call AGAIN she tells me the deal expired and it's IMMPOSSIBLE to get my gift card. They sent the code on the 31st OVER A MONTH after we purchased the phone. They sent it to only ONE of her phones and they sent it to the previous line that she hardly uses WHICH IS WHY SHE UPGRADED THE SMARTPHONE ON HER OTHER LINE NOT THE ONE THEY SENT IT TO. So we missed it due to lying tactics of BestBuy, Verizon by their "trained professionals", and them waitting so long for us to reddem it. THANK YOU VERIZON FOR ONCE AGAIN STEALING MONEY FROM MY GRANDMA. You know how to send a text when YOU need something but when a customer does YOU DON'T GIVE A FUDGE!!!!
P.S. WHENEVER you talk to a Verizon "trained" rep over the phone RECORD EVERYTHING THEY LIE TO YOU ABOUT!!!!!! They got me for the last time.

Being misinformed is not equal to being lied to. Asserting that you were lied to indicates that the company is being deceitful for some particular gain. Just as much as when people with say, when downtrodden, that they are just one small customer in the whole company as if to show that they feel insignificant, you are just one customer. Verizon does not gain much by deceiving you; instead, they lose a lot by doing so. More than this, the companies in the wireless industry undergo great scrutiny to ensure that their practices are honest. Saying that VZW is a company of thieves is silly and irrational.
Heh... I wouldn't say that. Then i guess you've never been scammed by a "reputable" company before?  Sounds to me like it's a delay tactic indeed, companies do this a lot with time sensitive promotions. A company like verizon could get away with such a thing because they are as big as they are, so your assumption that they would lose a lot is "silly and irrational" because their loss would be negligible and would easilly be written off on their taxes... lol
So, where's the risk or loss?  But, they did save $ on the rebate card though...

  • A thank-you to the Arch developers and contributors

I have been using some form of Linux for the past 13 years, starting with Slackware on floppies, and ending with Arch.  Before Arch, I used Gentoo for almost two years.
Now that I have been using Arch for around six months, all I can say is thank you.  Packages are kept up to date, configuration files are well documented and simple to edit, and pacman has not once hosed anything on my system ('emerge --update world' on Gentoo was occasionally a painful experience).
Arch is fast, lightweight, and always up to date.  I love it!
Thank you again to everyone contributing to the project.  You're doing a wonderful job.
Oh, and I would also like to thank everyone here in the Arch community.  These forums are friendly and helpful, which really does draw people to the distribution!

Shopko wrote:It is amazing how painful it was to download and write 28 floppy images of Slackware, just to get home and find that one of the floppies had bad sectors.
lmbo.  You think that's painful?  Surely someone around here in Arch remembers listening to the old screeching noises coming from the analog modem "handset", running at 300 baud.  I remember jingling the modem handset on the 2 styrofoam receivers to get a "good" connection.  What the hell were those old protocols called?  I remember "Kermit", but not the others...
Oh yeah, and magnetic tape drives.  I accidentally threw in an unmarked computer tape into my car stereo system deck once, thinking it was from "Judas Priest".  For a second there, I thought JP came out with a new song...

  • A thank you to all Archlinux maintainers and contributors

    Hi people,
I received a newer model laptop at work and decided to install Linux on it, since it came preinstalled with some newb OS (win something or other). I'm already a bit of a veteran with linux, and my favorite distribution has always been slackware. I have been following other distros though (like Ubuntu) but found them relatively untweakable. A while back (while still in release 0.5 or so) I read about Archlinux, and since it was a relatively slow day at work, I decided to try something completely new and decided upon Archlinux.
So far, I'm extremely happy with this choice. Some unexpected things happened (which is to be expected of course), like having to manually install openssh which was a bit of a surprise, but so far I've been able to get almost everything working with the help of the Wiki: X, KDE, touchpad, wifi with several network profiles (+ killswitch), vmware player, firefox + all the usual plugins, PPtP connection to work etc etc. and now everything 'just works'.
So here's a thank you to all the people involved in creating and contributing to the distro and it's knowledge base!
    Kind regards,
    Arnoud.

I'm not smart enough to program, or to be a developer, but I have contributed monetarily to Arch, and have put a lot of work into the Beginner's Guide and wiki.
I too am very thankful to the devs and community, and to be part of this excellent distro, by participating as much as I can.

  • Thank You to fox_m, Tom Wolsky, and Luis Sequeira1

I would like to publicly thank a few members here (fox_m, Tom Wolsky, Luis Sequeira1) who were very helpful with my questions regarding a video file I worked on for 8 months. The project involved numerous Motion 5 and Final Cut Pro X effects and was my first time ever using the applications. Thank you very much for all the help and if you're sort've interested in seeing how it all turned out then let me know how I can point you to the uploaded YouTube video without violating any forum rules and such.

Do you mean installing an earlier version on the firewire drive (in the external hard drive?)? As 10.4 came in the mac out of the box I'd need to get the cd then do something along the line of what you advised this guy https://discussions.apple.com/message/9429239#9429239 ? I guess the alternative is to do what he did and stitch the 5 min chunks together... would there be problems later on with exporting and quicktime do you know? A lot of time to waste if it wouldn't be possible..... thanks for the help

  • I don't want to sync my new ipod nano with all my music on my mac. i only want to put on certain albums. how do i transfer some of the music but not all? thank you.

i want to add music to my new ipod nano but i don't want to sync all the music onto the nano from my mac. how do i transfer some of the music but not all? thank you.

    Hello,
It is 2015 and iTunes still wants to tell me what to listen to. This problem still persists. The only solution I have found is to select "Manual ..." and pick one by one the items to sync.
When I select items to sync by artist or genre they do copy to the device. Then iTunes continues randomly selecting music until the device is full. When I want to load the Nano for a road trip I don't want 20% of the tracks to be Chakra meditation. When little Nano is docked on the nightstand alarm clock I DON'T want to hear Motorhead, Ministry, etc.
For all the effort aPple puts into seamless integration and ease of use ... Why the heck is it so hard to say NO? Sync these tracks and NOT those. Stop asking me to log in to your cloud service BTW. I do not want it.
    Thanks,
    Disgruntled Sour aPple User

  • Unable to open windows using boot camp.  Get message "The bless tool was unable to set the current boot disk."  Any thoughts, Thank you.

Unable to open windows using boot camp.  Get message "The bless tool was unable to set the current boot disk."   I am using an Imac , Lion operating system, and Windows 7.  It worked a few days ago.  Any thoughts, Thank you.

Note that nowhere in the Boot Camp instructions does it tell you to use Disk Utility to format the Windows partition. The Boot Camp Assistant program creates the partition & sets the +partition scheme info+ of the disk as appropriate for the Windows installer but the Windows installer itself is responsible for formatting the new partition with the appropriate +file system scheme+ (NTFS for Windows 7).
If you follow the instructions in the Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide to the letter you should have no problems installing Windows.

  • My hp computer died and took my itunes library with it...how can I retrieve my songs that I uploaded to itunes on my old computer? Thank you for your help

My HP computer running Windows XP died. The hard drive crashed and took my itunes library with it. I now have a new HP desktop running Windows 7 and can not get my full itunes library only what had been purchased. I am trying to retrieve all the songs we had including what we had uploaded from CDs etc.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

That would be easy and ideal but that is not the case here. The computer was repaired in Nov and then crashed in April completely. Thought it had been backed up to icloud but not very savvy with that. I have a sectored hard drive that was salvaged from the crash but having a difficult time reading and locating files on it.
Just wondering if there is a way to retrieve my itunes library to another computer????

  • HP DV7-4073 Hinge & Case failure. (THANK YOU SUPPORT TEAM)

I am hoping this posts will help others as there are many other posts like it that have been closed due to one reason or another. The stated cases of these HP Laptops having hinge issues after so much time and use is a growing concern and people know the HP name but find out after their purchase that the level of service is not what they expected. Personally, i purchased an HP DV7-4073nr back in October 2010 for school to get my degree. Around a year later, the case was cracking and splitting, and then the dreaded hinge issue came up. Fast forward 4 years later to today and thats where the happy ending finally happens.
I sent an IM to an HP support rep (JeffHelp) thinking that i would never hear from anyone again about my problem. Not only did i get a voicemail (never answer 800 numbers) with a case number AND a case manager name, but i also got a case management callback number. after about 30 minutes on the phone I was told my unit (verifying serial number and model number) was way out of warranty as well as end of life/end of service. Luckily, i was talkign to someone who cared enough about living a dispoable lifestyle and helped me not only find the correct part, but was able to apply a very generous discount to the overall cost.
Searching online for parts yeilded a very expensive cost for like new or grade A/B parts so i didnt think that spending over 100.00 dollars Americn for a single base piece was worth that. to my surprise, without even asking or questioning me it was added to my order. I am not going to go into great detail about that transaction but it was a complete jaw dropper and shock to me, and in a very good way.The bottom line to this post is that, yes, the products do obviously have some defects, and yes HP may have chosen to omit those facts after it was obvious and provide desirable compensation or repair for their products.
One fact remains that even with parts; computer, car, or otherwise, if you want OEM, you are going to pay the OEM price or risk your money on ebay looking for the best replacement. Take a few minutes and research your exact problem, your part number(s), and what effects the damage may have had on the overall condition of your laptop. Once you have it all figured out, CONTACT HP. Create a thread, send an IM, shoot them an email. Do something. They seem to be caring more about their reputation lately as i have seen many support reps and and mods on this forum replying to customers and members, replies from those people saying how amazing they were treated, the really good options they were offered and how they had some of their faith restored in HP's customer service over the years.
I would like to give a HUGE thank you-shout out to JeffHelp and Terri in the support division for all of your help, the unbelieveable customer service level you both went to and the understanding/concern for follow up that was offered. i am actually looking forward to my parts hoping they fix the problem and being in the support industry, i DEFINITELY think that credit is deserved where credit is due, especially in this case.
The last thing i would like to say is that support is all about hearing the negative and bad results on a daily basis over and over until you want to jsut walk away shaking your head. I think in the light of all these performance issues their equipment is having, its high time we recognize the team members who go above and beyond to do what it takes to make an HP customer a happy customer! So here is my shout out to Jeff and Terri.
    THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
You have restored my faith in HP Customer Support Division and I have a completely new outlook on your teams for their effort to make things right with me. Keep up the amazing work, we may be far and few inbetween, but those of us who egt that level of support, appreciate every bit of it.

  • Hi, I planned to purchase a laptop for me to use for graphic design ..could let me know which laptop would be the best for me to use ? Thank you!

Hi, I planned to purchase a laptop for me to use for graphic design ..could let me know which laptop would be the best for me to use ? Thank you! Pro or Air

Someday - and no one knows when that day will come - maybe all applications will be able to take advantage of the Retina display. But for the present, not many do: including all Adobe applications. There was a demo of Photoshop at the Apple World Wide Developers Conference of Photoshop running at native Retina resolutions but no one at Adobe in marketing is saying when, if or how the upgrade may be coming. It could be a week, it could be a year, it could be 2-3 years. No one knows. And only Apple app's (for the main part) are really utilizing the native Retina display.
I've seen some demos of some applications (Apple's) that take advantage of the Retina display and they're awesome. But in actually working in the here-and-now I've heard quite a few gripes, particularly on the Photoshop forum, of menus looking pixelated and/or 'blurry' so I'm not quite ready to jump into the Retina display boat just now. Don't get me wrong - others have ad are very, very pleased with their selection. But until Retina displays are available on larger monitors, the maximum work area that you're going to be able to use is 15" - and that's simply not enough room for full-blown graphic design. Then there's the cost factor - for the $4,000+ you spend for a completely full-blown Retina kit, you can get a standard MacBook Pro, 16 GB of RAM, a fast SSD and even the Apple Thunderbolt Display for the same amount.
The standard MacBook Pro isn't better than the Retina display: it's just different. And I think (and this is only my opinion - other graphic designers should feel free to jump in here) that it's the best computer that you can get for your specific purposes. And, towards that goal, I have to recommend a very good external monitor (there's nothing more annoying than having to use InDesign in a single-page mode rather than side-by-side because your monitor isn't big enough).
Remember that this is only my opinion and that others might jump in with their own. But I was in the electronic pre-press business for more years than I care to admit and we always - always - worked with at least 19" monitors (and that's back when dinosaurs actually ruled the world).
I hope that others will jump in with their comments. I'm going to follow this thread and see!
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • A HEART FELT THANK YOU TO EVERYONE!

A HUGE THANK YOU!!  to one and all here on this forum for all the help you have been and I am certain will continue to be to and for me.  You honestly have no idea how grateful I am for your kindness, patience with me.
You made my giant leap of faith and hope in getting my first MacBook REALLY PAY OFF in a huge way.
I am astounded at how nice everyone is here, how helpful, congenial, civil.  Having been around on internet message boards for 13+ years now, I can tell you this is NOT THE NORM.  Not once has anyone cursed me here, told me I was ignorant / stupid, made remarks about my family, insulted me, etc.  This is such a nice, refreshing change and I am so glad I found these Apple forums.

The next best thing is to whisper loud. LOL !
While I tried the totally white font color, it was hardest to detect.
And I was looking for an 'outline' font so as to be a ghost writer.
    {This means any lighter & you'd have to drag the mouse through it to see any letters.}
Anyway, we who occasionally think up things to say in reply to serious issues
thank you for your interest, enthusiasm in heartfelt appreciation of your Mac,
and the greatness that Apple has helped others expose about themselves.
My dad still uses his Macs, daily. He's about 30 years older than you or me.
In some rather accomplished fields of interest, education, art, science.
Glad you found cause to be joyful.
Almost like adopting a cute puppy!
    Good luck & happy computing!
