Anamorphic in a 16:9 Timeline?

I have a short 16:9 720p project in which I'm dropping in a few standard def 16:9 Anamorphic components. What's the best procedure to unsqueeze the Anamorphic pieces?

The standard aspect distort is 133.33.
However, check and see that the ANAMORPHIC flag is set in the clip settings first. Might not need to do anything but scale it.

  • Changing clips to anamorphic after adding to timeline?

I have clips from several cameras all shot in widescreen SD. In my bin the anamorphic column was NOT checked for 2 of 3 camera angles. The sequence is SD anamorphic. Now on the timeline, 2 of the cameras look 4:3.
I checked off anamorphic but this does not change what is already in the sequence (if I add video again it does appear anamorphic). Since I have already edited the video - how do I make what is already on the timeline appear anamorphic?
    Thanks!!

So let's not getting confused here.
    You say "...did uncheck Distort...."
I hope you wanted to say you did 'checkmark' Distort. Because that's what you need to do. Select everything in the timeline. Command Option V > Check Distort (If it's not already). Hit OK.
And make sure your sequence is Anamorphic:
Command 0 (zero) to open Sequence Settings. Make sure Anamorphic is checked (√)
Now that's to solve the problem you already had. But that did not fix your multiclip, which was created fro clips that were not properly flagged as anamorphic. Here's that fix:
To do so. Find Your Multiclip in the Browser. Now find the Anamorphic Column in the browser.
Now Doubleclick the Multiclip from the Browser. It opens in the viewer. Clcik on the first Angle. See now in the Browser if Anamorphic is checked (it must have this √-sign. If not. Click in the column to make it Anamorphic (√).
Now in the Viewer click on the second Angle. See in the Browser if there's the Anamorphic flag set for this Angle, etc.
    Do this for all angles.
Now you can edit with all anamorphic footage.
If this doesn't work I think it is time to trash preferences....

  • 16 X 9 TIMELINE VS CLIP VIEWER ASPECT RATIO

I can't seem to find out why I am able to get a full screen image when I am viewing a clip using the clip viewer and not from the timeline for 16 x 9 formats. The timeline seems to scale the image down at least to 80%. Is there something I need to adjust in the Timeline settings? If I select anamorphic the image is stretched to the edges but not the top. My clip were recorded 16 x 9 and imported as such.
    Would appreciate any help.

Thanks for the quick response. I found out that something was messed up with the sequence. When starting fresh and selecting anamorphic without anything in the timeline it works just fine. Thanks anyway.

  • Losing Anamorphic flag (bug?) in FCP5

    Hi all,
Working on a FCP5 set, I have a small problem (bug?).
    Material captured as Anamorphic (DVCPRO50)
    Working in Anamorphic sequences.
    All is fine.
But when importing (File > Import) clips from other projects (in which material was captured as anamorphic) FCP5 does not recognise the anamorhic 'flag' and makes it 4:3.
Well, no problem. I know this one, so before inserting this imported clip, I set the flag to Yes (anamorphic).
I now insert this anamorphic clip into the anamorpic timeline.
Still everything works like a charm,
UNTIL I Match frame this clip from within the sequence. The clip which is anamorphic in the timeline matches to the same frame in the Viewer, but only in 4:3 !!! ???
The browser still says 'anamorphic', but the Viewer shows a 4:3 picture and inserts as 4:3 (so pillarboxes) in the anamorphic timeline.
    Is that a bug?
    Rienk

Interesting, though could this be an issue with DVCPRO50 material?
I ask because I'm unable to reproduce this with DVCPRO25 and DV/DVCAM material captured in Anamorphic, as well as QT Movies (of said captured material) created by FCP (and then reimported).
I also tried QT Conversion, then reimported, but I'm not able to reproduce the issue with Match Frame.

  • Trying to get Anarmorphic footage in 16 X 9 Aspect ratio from PAL footage

Hi, I am currently doing some tests - having bought a new camera, the HVX-201 AE. I was trying to get a 16 X 9 Aspect Ratio on my finished test footage. I shot using DV Tape, using several options, the squeeze, letterbox and normal. I then captured using DV PAL Anamorphic..
On the timeline, it looks fine, with grey on top and below, with no black letterboxes, except for the section with letterbox format on. However, when I export to Quicktime, using the DV PAL 48hz Anamorphic codec, it keeps being saved as a quicktime file with 720 X 576 resolution. Is there any way for it to be 16 X 9? Do I have to use another codec or will it always be in a 5:4 aspect ratio no matter what I do?
Or is it that when a TV which can play in 16 X 9 detects it, then it shows up as a 16 X 9 picture?
Thanks for the help. I'm really confused.
    Cheers.

That's what anamorphic means, it's a 16:9 image stored in a 4:3 frame. You maintain that throughout the post process and any dvd creation in order to utilise the maximum resolution available in sd. When you author the dvd it flags the footage as anamorphic, telling any dvd player you play it in to output it appropriately according to the way it's set up. If your dvd player is not set up properly for the monitor it's connected to it won't work correctly and you'll either see a vertically stretched image with no letterbox (4:3 monitor with dvd player set for a 16:9 monitor) or you'll see a vertically squashed image with narrow letterbox (16:9 monitor with dvd player set to 4:3. In this case you can get the correct aspect ratio if you set your tv to one of the 'zoom' settings; normally the next option after 4:3 as you cycle through the options, but you are then throwing away roughly 25% of the available resolution and the image will be a bit softer.)
In DVDSP you can set the simulator to mimic various set-ups in order to check how the disc will behave before you burn.
If you just want to create QTs then Nick Holmes advice is the way to go.

  • Premiere CC GPU Bug

Another strange behavior in Premiere CC. Again something new and "Exciting" So if you have an Anamorphic sequence, for example XDCAM EX 1080 50i (1,333 Ratio) and GPU acceleration - "ON" you will get this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnxqMNElOiI&feature=youtu.be
Same thing happens if you place an anamorphic video on a progressive timeline.
My video Card is Nvidia GTX660 2GB, Windows7, 32GB RAM. In CS6 that worked fine. I just can't get it. If it's not a new feature and it all worked fine in previous version, how can it can be broken with a new release?
With each day i'm waiting for a bugfix patch more and more

  • Motion strobe 24p export trouble

    hey all.
new to posting but reading posts has helped a lot. thanks.
i am having trouble exporting files to DVD. i am getting ugly horizontal lines during movement within the frame whenever i burn to disc.
the material is 24p anamorphic in a 4:3 timeline. (it isn't squeezed, i'm playing it widescreen with black bars.) it is a multicam edit.
i have exported the files 'using quicktime conversion' and i've tried many different setting combos. there is minimal strobing on the quicktime files when i play back but exagerated strobing on the actual disc. in the final cut canvas the image looks great.
i am trying burn three programs ranging in length from 30 mins to 1:49 mins. i am dragging mpg-2 quicktime file into iDVD. (doing tutorials on DVDSP to learn now.)
these are the settings a friend instructed me to use.
method: 1-pass CBR (constant bit rate)
Data rate: 4000 for a 2 hour program, 7000 for a 1 hour program (do not exceed 7000)
    Frame Size: 720, 480
    Frame Rate: 29.97
    Aspect Ratio: 4:3
    Field Encoding: Bottom field first
    I Frame Rate: 15
additionally you want to make sure that the mpeg2 is set for deinterlacing.
just not sure what i'm doing wrong here. could it play the dvd burner itself? i've test multiple types of discs as well (including the apple brand.)
    any suggestions would be helpful.
    thanks,
    dan hayes...
p.s. i've read the ken stone 24p stuff and other posts but haven't seen my exact problem.

    wow.
thanks for the quick replies. wes. i am editing in a 29.97 timeline.
It sounds an awful lot like pulldown frames.
what exactly does this mean? (is it the half field explanation you provide?) my problem looks somewhat like this example. i have posted two screen shots on my blog if you wouldn't mind taking a look.
    http://freethinkpictures.blogspot.com/
as per your suggestion i have tested my dvd's on both NTSC and progressive monitors. i see these horrible lines on both screens.
my impression is that i DO NOT need to do anything different/special to regular 24p footage (as opposed to 24pa). i imported in dv ntsc anamorphic (29.97) and edited the same way.
But while you may perceive this as a problem, it is not really visible played back on an NTSC interlaced monitor. You only see it on a progressive computer monitor...
i am making this DVD available to a group of people, they may use progressive or interlaced monitors, so i'm hoping to create a disc that can be played back on both.
thanks very much for your time. any additional feedback is appreciated!

  • 16mm 4:3 to Adobe timeline without turning Anamorphic

I have a movie that was filmed in 16mm in 4:3 format. I have a copy of the finished work on a disc, I want to redit in a timeline for a demo reel. Because of its size all the presets put it into a anamorphic format instead of 4:3. Ideally I want to be able to export it to a Mini DV tape to edit along with the rest of my footage. Here are the specs to the movie. I can get it to the right size in a time line doing a custom set up, but can't get it to render properly.
    Video: 23.976 fps, 1440x1080 (1.333)
    Audio: 48000 Hz - 32 bit Float - Stereo
    Codec: Interger (Big Endian) H.264
Any help on this would be a huge help. I have been messing with this for a few days and I am about out of ideas.

Try dragging a source clip onto the "nnew item" icon at the bottom of the project panel.   Pr will create a new sequence it thinks matches the source.
If it gets it wrong; right click on the clip in the project panel and manually set the PAR correctly under Modify/interpret footage

  • 4:3 title safe zone overlay for 16:9 anamorphic DV PAL timeline?

    Hey guys,
I'm working on a widescreen TVC, and I need to be sure that the titles are safe for 4:3. Is there a way to bring up 4:3 safe zones on a 16:9 DV PAL Anamorphic timeline? Or will I need to design an overlay in Photoshop?
    Pete

Do you have FCP 7? Those are built in. Although they are notches, not full lines. If not...well, even if so, you can use these. They are GREAT! I use them. Andy's Guides:

  • Setting timeline for Anamorphic footage shot 24fps

    I have footage I shot with a Panasonic DVX100a.
I shot 24p with the Anamorphic lens.
When I import into the FCP timeline the settings give me a choice of 24fps..or Anamorphic. There does not seem to be an option that includes
    both.
I need to cut this film for output to film- so I need to have a 24 timeline.
of course - I also want to see the image at the right aspect.
    How can I do this?

you need to go in and edit the capture preset... I usually copy the preset and rename it. add the anamorphic check box.
HOWEVER... did you shoot 24p or 24pA.
If you shot 24p then leave it as a normal 29.97 sequence. The cadence is 3.2.3.2 not 2.3.3.2.

  • Anamorphic timeline makes 14:9 freeze frames

    Hello
I'm using FC Studio (5.0.4) and working on a DV Pal anamorphic timeline (the final footage will be played out as 16:9 fha). The problem I'm having now is that if I make a freeze frame it comes out as 14:9. This wasn't happening when I was working on it on Friday and I haven't changed any settings. Afterwards I did start working on a 16:9 fha project, but I don't think that should alter anything.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks
    Louise

Make sure that the viewer is set to "Show Square Pixels" in the little oval button in the central top area of the Viewer on the left side of the three oval buttons.

  • 24PA squeeze clip captured NTSC/DV in NTSC anamorphic timeline

I shot 24PA( squeeze)F6 for a project but opened it and rendered my greenscreen using reg NTSC not anamorphic which produced black bars and when I try to upscale to fit widescreen it looks horrible, but looks great in letterbox mode...how can I get it back to squeeze w/o affecting quality.and everytime I drop into Anamorphic timeline I have to render.

I found the answer in search.

  • Anamorphic Clip Timeline Settings

I'm lost in a Timeline Setting. I have a few short clips rendered in Quicktime from an Avid, and they've imported nicely into the project. This is from a 16:9 television station and the clip is 4:3, and I've discovered it's Anamorphic, and so I've told FCP it's Anamorphic by checking the Anamorphic tag on the clip in the Browser. Clip shows: 720x486 (hmmm, why not 480?), NTSC-CCIR601, lower. I make my edit, and allow FCP to set the Timeline settings on the first edit. The clip requires rendering and I render. A still frame in the Canvass retains all of the high detail, but the rolling video when played loses much of that detail. What setting am I missing?

The first thing that you need to double check is if you still have a green line highlighted above all tracks, that means that you still have to render the preview. It can be done by hitting Control+R.
The other thing to bare in mind is that the canvas only gives you a proxy image of the real one. You need to check quality on an external monitor or at least a TV.

  • STRANGE: single clip missing in export! (but still in the timeline)

Strangest thing: I exported a project... and a SINGLE clip is missing. BUT... the "key" over that clip shows up (over "black.") Hmmm... So I went back to the timeline... the clip is STILL THERE! So, I re-rendered, exported again... SAME THING. That one darned clip goes "black" w/ the key over it. Any suggestions?

NOTE: Had no problem exporting this same project before.
1.) even clip info = 720 x 480 / 29.97 fps (same as ALL clips throughout entire project)
    2.) Timeline info = 720 x 480 DV Anamorphic 29.97
3.) Here's the clip in the timeline. (see image, it's the gentleman in the labcoat) Amazingly, in the export the "keys" appear over black. Just this ONE clip is missing--audio and video. No other clips are affected.
4.) Finally, here is how I am exporting the project: (see image)

  • Is there any way to export 2.35 Anamorphic source to a 16x9 letterboxed frame WITH timecode or text overlays?

I have been trying to export temp cuts of an anamorphic project (2.35:1) in a letterboxed 16:9 frame with timecode and text overlays and other Additional Video Effects. Converting the 2.35 to 16x9 has been a breeze with the Preserve Aspect Ratio option in Cropping & Padding . The problem is that the black bars that that puts in the 16:9 frame appear OVER any of the Additional Video Effects, thus covering them up.
E.g. if I select a Text Overlay and place it in the Center, I can see it just fine. But if I want it Upper Left, Title Safe, it is covered by the black space of the Letterboxing. So the Additional Video Effects are getting added, they are just getting covered by the letterboxing. You can even see the very edge of the text in the Title Safe position, peeking out from behind the letterboxing, which is, of course, frustrating .
Thus far it's been a two-step process: letterbox the anamorphic source, then add TC and other video effects in a second job.
So - is there any way to do this in ONE step? It would really help my anamorphic workflow.
    (apologies for the lengthy question.)
    [I'm using FCPX 10.1.3 & Compressor 4.1.3, in OSX 10.9.5 on Retina MBP, Late 2013, w/  NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB]

    Thanks for the reply Russ.
Yes, I've considered adding titles and/or generators in the FCPX storyline, but this creates a need to render the entire timeline. As I'm juggling library locations and hard drive spaces I just didn't want to add a new render that will occupy a lot of space. It's also a bit of visual clultter for me, so my goal is to find the best workflow for adding this stuff on or after export.
