Animated gif in splash hangs or very slow

Hi
Not new to programming but quite new to Java. I have tried to find information
on this already but could not find it. If I missed it and have a double post here,
please let me know the link to the other post.
I have a application built in Java. On my laptop it starts in just 2 seconds.
On the production machine (AMD Geode based touch panel) the application
starts in about 30 seconds.
Due to the startup time I wanted to just the -splash option from javaw.exe
example:
D:\dist>javaw -splash:animated.gif -jar hmi.jar
The animated gif shows immediately and is 4532 bytes large.
java -version gives the following output:
java version "1.6.0_07"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_07-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 10.0-b23, mixed mode, sharing)
But with the animated gif as splash the application takes 3 to 4 minutes
to start or it does not start at all but only keeps showing the splash.
If I use a non-animated gif the startup time is almost like the normal 30 seconds.
Any known issues with startup performance using animated gif as splash,
or are there any known issues on AMD Geode based systems regarding the
startup performance and usage of animsted gifs as splash ?

I just see that the splash is not removed from screen either.
If I minimize the java application I see the animated gif still
there on screen.
I tried this with a normal gif (non animated) and that one
is also not removed from screen when the application is started

  • Why are the animated Gifs in Firefox 4 moving so slow and choppy?

When ever I try and look at an animated gif in firefox 4, well, it's just slow and choppy. I google searched and haven't found and remedies to the situation.

    Try to disable hardware acceleration.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.

  • Iweb 08 hangs or very slow to start at times.

    Hi all
Iweb 2.0.2 on mac osx 10.5.1 (leopard) at times very - very slow to start or quit - shown in activity monitor and "force quit" as "not responding". It does however eventually start and quit.
This problem appeared out of the blue and occurred at the same time as an internet problem.
After much grasping at straws I am now convinced that it is related to the internet problem (as strange as it may seem). During the hang, if I remove the ethernet cable (or start it without the cable) there is no problem. When the internet connection is ok - no problem.
I unchecked the "auto update" preference in iweb but no difference.
It almost seems that on startup and quit, iweb wants to communicate with god and cannot, so it gets all upset. (that's as techo as I can get here).
Has anyone found this problem or have an answer - mind you all ok if the network is ok. I have sent a "failure report to apple" after the force quit.

  • I am using Timeline to create animated GIFs, but it is going REALLY slow.

I am trying to create a simple animated GIF using Timeline. My plan is to have it last 20 seconds. But with just a couple of layers with straight-forward movements it moves incredibly slow. What is set to take 0.1 seconds takes 5-10 seconds… Am I setting my time too long? Doing the same thing for 5 seconds worked just fine -- but it was too short a time frame to get done what I wanted.

Sounds like you are using frame animation instead of timeline animation. for frames you take the total number of frames and divide it by total number of seconds, that should provide the # of seconds per frame.
Now if you would have gone the timeline route (CS3 and newer) You could have set a key frame for the beginning time of the animation and an ending time of the animation and be done with it, no need to figure out the speed. What it does is the opposite, you set the time and the fps(frames per second) and photoshop creates each frame for you.

  • Hanging and Very slow loading

    Hello People,
Thank you in advance for your help. Im having a problem with my Mac, i have a top of the range 27" desktop mac and its approx 18 months old.
Recently i have a huge issue with webpages hanging on safari, Chrome and firefox. The pages will start to load and then about 1/4 of the way they just stop responding, sometimes for upto a minute or more. If i do something like send/receive on outlook it tends to bring them back to life.
I have a pretty decent internet connection and most of the time it runs fine. But on the odd occasion the above happends, i clear the cache and cookies on a regular basis, i did used to think it was to do with the browsers not liking it when they all work at the same time. (i sue different browsers for different things)
I also have problems with the spinning wheel, when typing an email in outlook for mac, or something in firefox all of a sudden it will just stop respondng and the spinning wheel will appear.
I try and keep this comp as clean as i can with nothing on the desktop, all folders neat and tidy and it has loads of memory left as i use external hardrives. i just can wor out why i get such bad performance especially with this web browser hanging issue, im trying to add/ remove prodsucts from e-coomerce sites and it takes 4x as long as it ahould because the pages just hang.
Apolgies for my grammar, spelling, punctuation. I have tried to explain this the best i can and your assistance would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me madddddddd!!
    Thank you again

Yes i have tried those ideas, still no luck. It just took about 2 mins to open this page! So frustrating.

  • Animated Gif's Playing too slow

Lately since I installed leopard animated gif's are showing up on safari too slow and its not on one site its everywhere! And I need to see the real speed of what the gif is or else I won't know if its wrong or not. So what do I do?

Same problem here, very frustrating. The same thing also happens on my MacBook with Tiger. The longer the animated GIF is, the more it slows down. Here's a good example, fine in Firefox but not Safari: http://content.ytmnd.com/content/6/a/0/6a0e42120c9f9e24dfc3bfa353ccd114.gif
I submitted this as a Safari bug a while ago, I hope all of you will too.

  • Slow animated gif export

How do i stop my animated gifs from coming out slower than i
created them? I think it's coming out as 12fps no matter what frame
rate i set it to. The only way i can see to do it (the very, very
hard way) is to have half as many frames, which is a big process to
go and take half of the frames out from each section.
    So what's the trick?

The trick is to work in 12 fps. That is Gif speed and you
    can't bust
    it's playback.

  • Animated GIF causes popup to hang?

    Hi:
We have started using animated GIFs heavily in Teststand popups for about the last year and half. As we have used this feature more and more, we have had more and more reports of Teststand hanging after acknowledging the popups.
The problem is very intermittant. But it is reproducible. See attached files. All the sequence does is call a non-modal teststand popup over and over that displays an animated image. The popup is set to timeout after one second (just for convenience of reproducing the problem). The sequence consistently hangs within a couple minutes. Behavior is the same in the sequence editor or the CVI user interface. If the sequence is changed such that no image is displayed by the popup, the sequence does not hang.
We are using Teststand 4.0.1f1. Let me know how to resolve this, as it is quite a major issue with us.
    Thanks,
    Dave

    dsteel,
Take a look at the following thread, http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=330&message.id=22997#M22997. Basically there is some code that the TestStand step type uses from the CVI RTE to display non-BMP images in an IE control. Specifically, to display the IE ActiveX control, the step type must create an STA thread to display the dialog and it uses some threading functions from the CVI RTE to do it. There is a slight chance that when the step type waits for the STA thread to complete, the CVI function function to wait for the thread can sometimes miss its event, so the step type ends up waiting forever for the STA to complete, even though it already did.
If you would like to discuss this in more detail, please contact us by using http://ni.com/ask

  • Animated GIFs slow down application

    Hi all,
When I open a JDialog with some animated GIFs in a JTextPane (HTML or Styles), the whole application slows down. The GIFs are very slow and are flickering.
The problems already start after less then 10 small GIFs. I'm using Java 1.5 and I have a new, fast PC. I planned to have mor than 100 animated GIFs on the screen (animated smiles in a chat).
    Thanks in advance
    Markus

Make sure to use the Flyweight design pattern so you don't open the same GIF file twice.

I recently bought, from the original website of Adobe, Photoshop elements 13. However, when I go with my mouse pointer over the menu, It hangs or he works very slow. Does anyone have an idea how I can fix it? I have already downloaded updates, both from Adobe and Windows. I have a new pc with window 8.1.

It could be a coincidence, but I rebooted the machine and (knock on wood) PSE13 seems to be working ok.

    You're welcome goldcanyon1
Glad I could help. Thanks for sharing your problem and what device was causing it for you. Sometimes having too many USB devices can cause problems. Your camera might work if only the mouse and keyboard are connected. It is worth a try if you need to get photos from it. I have seen even on my custom built PC occasional "odd" issues that can arise from having a variety of different USB devices connected.
Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" to those that help solve your problems.

  • Animated GIF - Animation slows after save CS3

    Hello,
When Saving an animated GIF in Photoshop CS3 the animated frames slow when viewed after the save. Therefore any gradient fades etc seem to stutter, about 25% slower than the frame rate set initially.
When the animation is played in photoshop it plays at the right speed, only slows when viewing the file after saving...
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks
    Andy

I just experienced the same problem in Photoshop. 22 frames with "no delay" selected in all of them. When opening the animation in IE6 and Firefox it runs slower than the original.
Therefore, would you be kind to post it if you found a solution?
    Hope to hear something soon.
    Thanx!

  • Splash page with animated gif only question

    Hello all:
    I have a splash page (index.html) that is designed using an animated gif created in photoshop. The rest of my site is Css/XHTML, but has some divs containing animated gifs. I have two questions;
1: By using only the animated gif on the splash page, am I limiting or hindering my SEO (google, microsoft, yahoo) ranking opportunities as there is no "content" on the page that the spiders/bots can see? I went ahead and included some "content" but hid it by coloring the type the same as the background color hoping that might do something, but obviously I'm a SEO newbie so any suggestions are more than welcomed. I will include the code at the end of this post, and my site is: http://reynolds-marketing.com.
    2. Is there a way to pre-load the animated gifs on my pages so that they play more smoothly and efficiently?
TIA for any of your help. Murman

My guess is yes, but that is just my opinion.  I believe the text/background same color idea was really in vogue back in the late 90's and we all heard that it was the kiss of death for SEO that the SE's hated them so much you got de-listed, not sure if that is a fact or not.
My bigger concern would be how many people you are losing by making them wait to get to where they want to go.  I have told many a client that in some sense, the interent is too big, you have too much competition and people have thin patience for things like splash pages.  The ooo and aaa effect of animated gifs is long dead...again, in my opinion.
I dont know the answer to your load question...

  • Why are animated GIFs in Firefox 11 slow? I downgraded to Firefox 10 and the animated GIFs suddenly play fine again, so I am positive that the update messed up the playback delay of animated GIFs somewhere.

Self-explanatory. I am positive that the GIF I am viewing is faster than what it's supposed to be. I viewed the same animated GIF in another browser and it plays fine. It just plays slower in Firefox 11. I downgraded to Firefox 10 and the animated GIFs were fine again. I upgraded back to 11 and yet again the animated GIFs slowed down. This happens for all of my animated GIFs.
I like viewing my animated GIFs, and since I don't have any problems yet with Firefox 10, I'll be sticking with it for a while...

Yes I have exactly the same problem, and it has NOT been solved yet in Firefox 14. Please Mozilla, what is the use releasing more and more "major upgrades", Firefox 11, then 12, then 13, then 14 (one per month !) if you don't even care to fix the big problems ? That is just marketing crap, nothing more. You guys used to do amazing job, but the new policy is just unbearable, no offense meant : you need to react !
