Philipp Spöth of Frischluft.com has released an alternative/ replacement for AE's own not-so-sexy Curves effect, that has all the features you ever wanted in the version that comes with AE: the panel adapts to the size of the effects control window and thus can be very large, curves are smoothed and come in color and you have much more parameters to choose from. The latter includes the option to also drive curves with other curves, allowing for selective corrections. For the full Monty, go to:

Using an expression for curves effect

Hi guys,
I'm looking to use the wiggle expression on the red level of the curves effect to flicker my video from normal coloring to high red. However, I can't activate the expression field for the curves effect in the same way I can for others. Is this because curves functions differently, and if so, what would be the best way to achieve the effect I'm aiming for?

Custom controls are generally inaccessible to expressions because there is no surefire way to know how their internal data is formatted. It's a just one big black hole and only the people who program those tools know what goes on inside. Your opacity wiggle should work, though. If it doesn't, you could also use e.g. the Blend effect to fade between your original and a duplicate with teh curves applied. Or you do a straight opacity wiggle with two duplicates in teh first palce. Depends on what look you desire, as anturally all of the different methods result in different processing, especialyl in 32bpc mode...

and still in PSD format as I am coloring him, what would be the simplest
steps to take to add that shading like black under his eye (in right side image)?
Or that stippled shaded effect along his nose?
See areas under my character's eye and nose I want to experiment on . . .

I certainly appreciate this! tfkelly42 you did some great touch-ups on my sample mate! I do like this, like having you all over my shoulder saying, "click this, then that tool...." THANKS! And, I use PS6, so my version is NEWER than his....so I think I ought to achieve the same effect! BTW, here is a screenshot of my tool bar with BRUSH highlighted....but before venturing into a test....should I highlight the area in any way....prior to trying the brush tool and the rest? I sent the letter below to RIM and it auto bounced back to me with a multitiude of useless options to choose from.
Is there a person with logic and common sense that will veiw a letter to the company or is a dead end.
To whom it may concern:
I am writing to you today because of experience with a Blackberry Curve
8320 that I purchased through T-Mobile in 2008. That would have been
Blackberry #1.
I have since been issued 3 more. The problems have ranged from   trackball
failure, key pad failures, spontaneous text deletion, battery charging
failures, and a few things that I can not remember anymore.
T-Mobile keeps telling me that they will not give me a different model
unless I pay for it, that the curve is under warranty and it must be replaced
with the same model.
Perhaps I am just very unlucky and have received four of the few curve
failures, some how I'm not convinced of that. I do like the set up and
functions of the phone. It should and does provide all the features that I require
and a few nifty extras that I just like. I do feel that it is not doing it
reliably. The curve (or the 4 curves that I have had) are DUDS.
T-mobile keeps sending me refurbished ones,maybe that's the problem.
I am not a fussy person and now I am just a disgusted person.
T-Mobile told me that there is nothing they can do for me, the guidelines
comes from the manufacturer---that is you.
As I said before, I love the form and function of a Blackberry. They keep
sending me refurbished replacements of a phone that is no longer made. I am
end the end of the line as far as contacting anyone who can understand the
ridiculous nature of this situation. I paid for a phone 2 years ago and
have never had a phone that has worked reliably since.
I use it for work----no actually I don't anymore because I can't trust that
I will receive my data/calls reliably.
I will re-phrase, I would like to use it for work. I travel a lot----I need
my data, text and phone capabilities internationally. If my phone worked
right, I could leave my laptop at home. WOW, that would be nice.
Have you ever tried to use Skype? It is truly innovative and handy.
A business call on skype in a train station?---- I'll just say that was not
the most professional impression I ever made on a client. I could have
really used my phone for that one. BUT-------my track ball was messed up for
that major mess.
I keep saying to myself that I will wait till a new smart phone comes out
that really grabs me and I will just buy it and forget about this Blackberry
mess. Then I think that I did wait last time and I chose the Blackberry. I
don't know who's fault it is that this is happening. Is it T-Mobile and
their service or is RIM for manufacturing a handful of bad phones.
Well T-Mobile will not own any part of this problem and I am done with them
when my contract ends this month.
What do you have to say?
This has gone on for 2 years and I am truly tired and disgusted. I do not
expect anything to be done. That's just the way things are these days. One
dissatisfied customer is a not important.
I work in customer service for American Express and every now and then
someone can not be satisfied. I tell you---it is not due to lack of trying to
help them.   I have no evidence in my case that anyone has looked at this
situation logically and tried to help. For two years I have been told that
no matter how many curves fail on me,that I will continue to be given more
refurbished curves.(I am not one of those crazy, obsessed consumers--I
swear)---all of these phones have gone bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's all, I am tired hearing my own thoughts on this.
Please do not send a "BLAH,BLAH" form letter. I design the templates for
those at my job.It will just insult me.

Help recreating the same effect

Hi Photoshop Gurus
I have a photo that I took in bangkok in october 2007 that I have converted to a 'arty' background image for a website that I manage for an organisation.
When I did the effects I had just started with Photoshop and I can't remember the effects that I deployed. I want to do another picture to make it look like this to overlay the images but can't get the same effect. The first picture is of the grand palace in bangkok. I am the photographer - who took the pictures.
I would like to know how to determine what the changes were and how i made them, I recall adjusting the curves, brightness and contrast but i am unable to remember all the changes that my daughter suggested so that I can apply them to the overlay picture (the overlay picture that I want to place is the sydney bridge - the website is for the australia thailand association- FYI).
I have attached the pictures - the start picture is thai1430.jpg and the converted one is palacesmall.jpg.
If possible, any pointers that can help me to replicate the effect - ie take the first picture and recreate the second - would be apprciated. I have tried to look at the histograms but I am not that advanced yet to be able to move the image to that format.
Any help appreciated - i will use this as a training exercise for me too.

Looks like the last step taken was inverted. Whatever was done before that I can only guess and play with the picture. Best bet is to call your daughter since she gave you the instructions in the first place. She just may remember.

Ok, here's the deal. I'm a network engineer, and my company uses a monitoring system which sends SMS text messages to pre-defined corporate cellphone numbers when something requires an engineer's attention. My problem is that I'm a VERY deep sleeper (laugh if you must; I need three separate alarms to wake up in the morning), and my current phone's speaker (a Curve 8310) is simply not loud enough to wake me up. Nor is any other phone, I would imagine. Not unless it has a 30-minute ringtone.
So my question is, can the Curve, when connected to an external speaker or a pair of headphones via 3.5mm audio cable, output its ringer or its SMS notification tones through the audio jack to the speaker/headphones in addition to (or instead of) the phone's built-in speaker?

eh, you never know... I've had people thank me PROFUSELY, before, for giving them those loud tones, but of course they tried them first
Your Alarm tone can be as long as you want... Mine repeats until I touch the screen, then I have a one minute snooze. I use a loud tone also, because most would never awaken me.

How can I get rid of the crop effect in iMovie for all of my photos all at one time?

I want to be able to make a time lapse video using still images that I've imported using iPhoto. What I have been able to do so far is import the pictures and make the time per photo shorter. However, I cannot take off the crop effect that iMovie does automatically for them. I know how to take the crop effect off manually one by one, but that would take decades. Is there a way so I can select all of the pictures and take the effect off all at once?

Several ways to get similar results. Image > Adjustments > Posturize with low values similar to what you'd use n Cutout. This is the most flexible way I can think of as you keep the image in RGB mode with layers intact. A more radical approach would be to reduce bit depth using Indexed Colour. You'll need to experiment with settings, try changing Forced to Primaries, and Matte to Foreground Color. There's no going back from this route, although you can change the mode back to RGB to re-enable layers, adjustment layers etc.
A nice thing about the Filter gallery filters is that you can change the layer to a Smart object with all the control that gives you.
Now if only this forum could filter out bizarre content.

If you are doing a reload every time then you can issue following commands to clear data from cube.
lmt name to all
allstat
clear all from <cubename>prttopvar
You can wrap above commands in pl sql procedure using dbms_aw.execute package and execute it before cube load starts. Instead of clearing it from whole cube you can clear only from one partition also. Just take a look at clear command in olap DML 10.2 reference.

I read other threads with people have issues with their PC, but I am not able to follow them to correct my issues.
When I open a JPEG file from my mark iii into CS6, I try to start a new layer and then add the lighting effects filter. CS6 crashes (the little effects comes up on the screen and the little blue circle goes round and round). Nothing happens, but if I check task manager it says photoshop is not running.
I have windows, 16GB ram, and am using a small percent of my memory.
How do I see if I need to update my video card and how do I do that?

Have you installed all the Photoshop updates?
And have you checked your GPU maker's website for updated video card drivers?

Can I Open Indesign File In CorelDraw Without Losing The Applied Effects?

i have been using Indesign for quite some time now and i have considerable experience in Corel too. My problem is that if i export an indesign file as PDF and then open it in CorelDraw, the file loses the effects i applied.
For example i apply blur effect on a picture in Indesign and after exporting it as a PDF, i open it in CorelDraw, the file would lose the Blur effect i applied.
I am confused how to retain the effects i applied in Indesign so that it shows up in Corel as well.I DO NOT wish to edit the file in Corel because the file would be transferred for printing purpose only.

Adobe and Corel products handle effects (like blur, or dropshadow, or even gradients) completely differently from each other. The only chance of having them move from one to the other is to rasterize any such effects before making the PDF (DO NOT save this over your original file!).
Note that I said it's a chance. Even these will be mishandled from time to time.

I found a post from Alope that told me exactly how to fix it.
Go to:
Settings - General - Restrictions - put your pass code in - Facetime - turn the switch to ON
Worked perfectly to stop the message that said, Not authorized to do that!
