Another port question - multiple Macs behind the same firewall

I've searched for this issue, but I can't seem to find a topic directly on point. I know how to forward the right points for this to work, but...
I'm coming from outside the network, and I need to control multiple machines that are behind the same firewall. I can't forward a port to more than one machine. How do I control all these machines?

To be able to connect to a workstation from outside it's network, the ports that ARD uses must be open on both ends of the connection. ARD uses ports 3293 and 5900 so those must be open.
If your workstations get their addresses from an NAT device rather than being "real", as seems to be the case from your description, the ports also need to be forwarded in the router to the workstation's internal IP address. ARD uses port 3283 for the reporting and updating function, so if your Macs are getting their IP addresses through NAT, since you can only forward a port to a single workstation, you can only get reports, push package/files to etc. for a single workstation.
ARD uses the VNC protocol for observation and control, though, and there are a range of IP addresses for that protocol, starting with 5900. ARD uses 5900 by default, so that port would be forwarded to the first workstation. You would, I believe, need to install VNC servers on the systems (since the ARD client cannot listen on any port other than 5900 while VNC servers can be set for other ports such as 5901, 5902, etc. You would then forward 5901 to the second workstation (and on to 5902, 5903, etc.). You can then use the following information:
Remote Desktop 2: How to specify a port number for a VNC client
to connect.
Hope this helps.
Forum Tip: Since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Discussions page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic before you post a question.
Regards.

Yes, you simply share the drive to the network.. in whatever way that is possible as you have given us no info.. over the network TM will create sparsebundles.. locally it can produce a straight backup ..

  • How to do a NAT to multiple MACs via the same public IP

    Heay y'all,
I have multiple MACs that I need to admin via the same public IP.
I'm trying to activate the NAT function on my airport 802.11n, but I can only register 1 internal IP address for the same port number.
    Example:
    public UDP port: 3283, 5900
    public TCP port: 3283, 5900
    Private IP Address: 10.0.1.201
    Private UDP port: 3283, 5900
    Private TCP port: 3283, 5900
Now if I try to do the same thing for another private address, I get a a conflict... (The Port mapping entry you have entered already exists.)
What I find wired is that:
    a) why the private address starts at xxx.xxx.xxx.201
    b) why can't I apply the same rule for multiple IPs (e.g. xxx.xxx.xxx.202 and xxx.xxx.xxx.203)
    c) I have also, an airport 802.11g and I could configure the NAT table as I wanted.
    Am I missing something?
Are three any wild-cards that would cover all internal IP addresses?
PS! I edited my ".baseconfig" file via "textedit" and added a additional private IP address, in the NAT section... I have not gotten any errors, when I load the file in to the base station. but then again I can't edit the IP field via the airport admin tool, and I have not been able to test this workaround.
    looking forward to you comments.

    Hi guys,
    Thanks for the help....
I think i found an alternative solution...
I'll try useing a dedicated internal IP address for my adminwork... then I'll get the user to change from the DHCP allocated IP address to the dedicated one... this way same ports and IP address used for all of the machines.
I'll try this method... if it does not work then I have to use your suggestions... but thanks for your help and response.

  • Can multiple Macs access the same firewire volume simultaneously?

I have a firewire drive and hub, and two Mac Minis. I would like to use this hardware to build an Oracle 10g Real Application Cluster (RAC). To do this, both Macs would have to be able to read/write blocks on the same volume on the firewire drive (Oracle prevents collisions). Newer Linux kernels have support for doing this. It seems that the Mac OS X Server 10.3.4 that I am using blocks at the volume level by node. It would seem to preclude my using this hardware unless I devote another machine to being an NFS server for the shared storage. I'm looking for possible kernel tricks to get this to work.

Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.3.4)

According to Oracle's white paper on RAC:
The type of disk storage used can be network attached storage (NAS), storage area network (SAN), or SCSI disk.
It does go on to say:
Alternatively Oracle supports the use of raw devices and some cluster file systems such as Oracle Cluster File System (OCFS) which is available on Windows, Linux and Solaris
I suppose if Oracle is taking over the raw device, support might be possible, but OCFS is not available for Mac OS X.

  • ARD over internet to multiple macs using the same connection

Hi, I know the topic has been covered to enable ARD over the net, however all the solutions I see require port forwarding which in essence makes only one computer using the internet connection available, how do you make it so multiple macs can use the one internet connection to send/receive ARD requests? is there a way to change the port ARD uses on individual macs and then forward the ports ? or do I have to go down the VPN path ? or is there a better solution for this kind of setup, thanks Ash

    Precisely.
    Cheers, Joel
\[ Note, the reason I didn't use 5900 and 5901 was for clarity to make it obvious that they are arbitrary choices on the external side, but also because sometimes using 5901+ gets confusing. Depending on your VNC server software, which port on the internal side that you choose to use between 5900-5920 actually means something (resolution, color depth, etc) to the server software. If you can keep it all straight in your head though, and point them all to the right internal port (5900 usually), no harm in it. If you don't mind adding some awful "security through obscurity," you probably shouldn't have VNC service open to the internet on 5900 anyway. Either way, you should also probably limit connections to those internal machines now that they are "directly reachable" from the 'net. In your firewall they should both have default-deny policies for incoming requests unless they're from your known-safe external addresses.]

  • Does uploading iPhoto libraries from multiple Macs with the same photos create duplicates in the new Photos app?

I have 4 Macs and I had the same iPhoto library on each of them. When I chose to turn on the iCloud Photo Library on each of them, each Mac, each one of them uploaded the library to iCloud Photo Library.. Now it appears that I have many duplicates in the new Library. Is it adding each of the 4 libraries to the mix? It's a real problem as I have 25,000 pictures - 70GB in my library. So paused the upload on 2 of the Macs about half way through in case it is creating duplicates, until I get some answers. Any help would sure be appreciated.

I'm in the same boat as well. I'm doing one mac at a time and seeing how it works. Howev the upload is so slow, who knows when it will be done.

  • Two servers (serverSocket) behind the SAME firewal !?l

    Hello !
I dont know if this is the right forum for this qusetion,
and maybe the question is really stupid, but ...
I made a little client/server application, just to
play around with sockets and serverSockets.
It works fine, but now i ask myself:
What happens, if there are two of my servers running on two
different computers in the SAME LAN behind the SAME
firewall/internetgateway, and both are listening on the SAME
    port ?
F.e. if the extern IP of this LAN/(its gateway) is
204.556.234.123, and a client in the internet is connecting
to it on the port, on which the two servers behind the firewall
    are listening, WHO'S ANSWERING ?
(If this port is set to "open and forward" in the firewall)
The one with the shorter patch-cable ? ;)
How is it possible for the client to differenciate
this two servers in that LAN?
The only logical solution i found is that this two servers
have to listen on different ports,
but i think there has to be another explanation and/or solution.
Do i have to take care about situations like that in my
    server-application ?
I have the feeling that i have to...somehow.
OK, you see i dont know much about this...
i would be very thankful for every hint and explanation.
    Thank you very much,
    greetings,
    huni.

F.e. if the extern IP of this LAN/(its gateway) is
204.556.234.123, and a client in the internet is

    firewall
    are listening, WHO'S ANSWERING ?
(If this port is set to "open and forward" in the
firewall)Whichever one the firewall is told to forward it to!
The two computers running your server have unique addresses on the internal network. The firewall will forward incoming connections to one of those addresses. Maybe it can do some simple "load balancing" by forwarding some connections to one server and some to the other, but still, any particular connection will only go to one server.

  • How do I open the same ports on an Airport Extreme Base Station for multiple computers at the same time?

    As the title suggests...
I have a mix of five Mac and PC's at home using an Airport Extreme Base Station as the router.   I need many ports opened on the AEBS for all of the computers- not just one computer.  (for example: three people want to play TF2 on Steam at the same time; each machine needs the correct ports open on the router).   Port forwarding  only allows me to forward a given port to a single IP, yet I need that port open for five differnt IP's, all at the same time.
How do I do that on an AEBS?
In the same way, I have a small office of four iMacs using an old airport with the same exact issue.   I would like to be able to connect to all of them remotely with Apple Remote Desktop, but the port forwarding on the airport only allows a port to forward to a single IP.   I want to be able to tunnel into the office network and log onto any machine behind the Airport extreme... not just a single IP.    I currently have it set up where I can tunnel into the office from my house, I can find the one machine that the port forwarding has been assigned to, I can log on and everything is just fine... with one machine.    How do I open the firewall for the other machines?
TL,DR version:  How do you open ports on an Airport Extreme Base Station instead of forwarding ports?   Forwarding ports doesn't work for multiple IP's.

You can open a single or multiple ports to a single device or different ports to different devices, but you cannot open the same port to multiple devices via the AirPort Utility for the Apple routers.

  • Sharing one iTunes library across multiple accounts on the same Mac

Hello, I've poked around at some of the posts dealing with sharing one iTunes music library across multiple accounts on the same Mac but it seems like this can only be done if the libary is moved to a shared folder. I realize this can be done but I was trying to share it the way it is described in a post on Apple support (See link below.). That post seemed to imply that you don't have to move the library from its original location (owned by account A, e.g.), rather just make a couple preference changes in the accounts, use fast user switching and voila. That doesn't seem to work. So my question is this: Is the only way to share one iTunes music library across multiple accounts on the same Mac to move it to a shared folder? I'm running 10.4.8 on an Intel iMac. Thanks in advance!
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93195

After reading this and several other related threads, I am becoming thoroughly confused about all of this. I have a situation similar to the one that pokerpal described in the post dated January 7 at 8:06 pm, except that the music files on my system are located on an external hard drive. Everything else is pretty much the same though - I am the admin user (and the main iTunes user and maintainer) and my girlfriend is a standard user who has no music in her own iTunes library. She can see and listen to and make playlists from and sync her iPod with the music in this library from her account, and I can do the same thing, independent of her, from my account. And if I make a change to information within a song, she doesn't see it, and vice versa, and I understand that. What I don't understand is why when I add a song or an album to the music files by importing a CD or downloading something from the iTunes Music Store, she has no way of knowing that unless I tell her, and then she can add it to her library by using the "Add to Library" function. Is there no way of automatically updating her library files to add the new song(s)? We have almost 15,000 songs and videos in that library, and I don't even want to think about what might have to happen if the answer to my question is "no." Interestingly enough, if I put an update to a Word document in the same exact location (on the hard drive), we can update that and pass it back and forth all day - why is that such a difficult task for iTunes to accomplish?
Sorry I went on so long, but this has been building up for some time, and none of the solutions I've read about here have really been of any help, so I'm a bit frustrated and, as I said at the beginning, confused.

  • Multiple takes on the same track, fading from one take to another

Isn't there a way to record multiple takes on the same track and fade the takes together?  In an old version of Garage Band, you used to be able to put two takes one on top of the other in the same track and fade them together.  Now, the track just cuts and there's no fading to the next one.  It's so cheesy this way; all live instruments need two tracks, one for mess-ups. I called up Apple Care but the guy couldn't find a solution.  If this is the way it is now, it's very cheap.  I mainly bought the Mac because of Garage Band, the Garage Band of old; has it been dumbed down now so that musicians are forced to spend even more money to upgrade to the next level program?  I wouldn't have bought the Mac but instead stuck with Mixcraft on PC, which has ease of use and cost only $80.  Please say there is a way to fade from one take to the next on the same track without cutting off one take abruptly.  Otherwise I have been duped by Apple.

    Sorrry dude, didn't happen.
I'm guessing you used Apple Soundtrack - sounds a lot like what you're describing.
Garageband, incidentally, has only added features version to version.

If you explain to them that you expected software you once used on another computer to be included on this one, how could they not?

  • Question about auto-saving multiple files with the same template

Is there any way to do this? The template will never change - but I will need to save it as a new file each time I open it. Just want to know if there is an automatic way to do this when the template is opened each time? Preferably numeric, starting from any number. I suppose I can just save each file myself - but as it gets up into the thousands of files - I'm not going to want to.
It would be really cool if it could auto-save the file, assign it a number, and then place that number in the top corner of the saved document.
If anyone can help - let me know. C.

OK. First add a text field to the document, say "text1". You probably want it to be read-only. You can duplicate it to all pages if needed. Then open the template document, open the interactive JavaScript console (Ctrl+J), and enter the following code:
    // Interactive Console JavaScript
// Get the folder this file is in
    var folder = path.replace(documentFileName, "");
// Save multiple copies (from 1 to 9)
// with the number in the text field
    for (var i = 1; i < 10; i += 1) {
        getField("text1").value = i;
        saveAs(folder + "template" + i + ".pdf");
After you paste the code, highlight the lines and press Ctrl+Enter (or the Enter key on the numeric keypad) and Acrobat will save multiple copies to the same folder as the template. Replace "text1" with the name of the field you've set up and "template" with the name you want the copies to have before the number.

  • Solaris 11 IPS:  How do you post multiple versions of the same package?

How do you post multiple versions of the same software package on a single IPS instance(port)? Oracle was able to do it here with versions 151 and 175 of S11:
    http://pkg.oracle.com/solaris/release/
Unfortunately, based on my searches, no where in the documentation (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/technologies/ips-323421.html) does it explain to the development community how this is done. The best I can do is create pkg repo instances on different ports to host each different software version.
We are trying to deploy an IPS repository for our drivers and utilities that our customers can link to and pull updates from. We have been able to post a software package to the repository using the command:
    pkgsend publish -s http://localhost:1234 -d ./ Appv1.p5m
This posts the package on the IPS repository instance at port 1234 on the server. However, we would like to post multiple versions of the package on the server at the same URL. Why the same URL? So that our customers and end-users need only point to a single URL to pull down our software rather than having to add a new URL to the publisher list each time we have an update. We want at least 5 of the previous software versions to be available on the server. Posting each version of the application or driver on a different IPS instance on a different port will require customers to add multiple URLs to their publisher list and they also will not be able to initiate remote scans for updates.
Has anybody been able to do this? Is any documentation forthcoming?
    Edited by: user13489824 on Jun 25, 2012 10:17 AM

dhduvall: Thanks for your response. Yes, one would think that as long as the version numbers are different, you should be able to accumulate multiple versions of a package in a repository. It looks like Oracle has done it in their S11 repository unfortunately, as far as I know, they have not shared the steps on how to do this. I would like to publish two versions of the same package. I.E. two different manifests with two different fmri.pkg version strings and two different binaries.
If I publish one package after another like this:
    pkgsend publish -s http://localhost:1234 Appv1.p5m
    pkgsend publish -s http://localhost:1234 Appv2.p5m
Then only the second package shows up in the repository, as if it over-wrote the first one.
Running pkgsend with two manifest, like this:
    pkgsend publish -s http://localhost:1234 Appv1.p5m Appv2.p5m
Will cause pkgsend to combine the packages and manifests as if they were a single package... not what I am trying to do.
Both approaches are complete without errors but neither achieves what I am trying to do.
alan.pae: Thank you. Unfortunately, the link didn't really help. I've read Oracle's white papers and IPS developer guide so I'm familiar with the topics covered.
Lex: Yes, I know. I specified the versions in the pkg.fmri value string.
