Antenna Polarization

Hi Guys,
I have two cisco docs here for two different Antennas.  The 5959 states Vetical Liniear and the 5145 does not state vertical or horizontal.  Why is this? And does it matter?

It shows you the propagation for the E and H plane or whatever. The one on the left is the horizontal propagation, I'm pretty sure, so it seems you should mount it horizontally. That's the only way I've ever mounted it.

  • Improving SNR levels

    Hi all,
    I have the following setup:
    - point to point link over 2km
    - 2 of the BR1310G-A-K9-R
    - 2 Yagi AIR-ANT1949
I tried to allign the antennat few times but I still get pretty low values of the signal and SNR. Any ideas how can I improve the SNR ratio? I attach some screenshots with the values. I already checked the channels congestion and it seems like CH 1 is the best choice. How about power setting sof the antennas? Shall I leave the values as default?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Scott and thanks again for your help. I have only 2 bridges in point2point configuration so guess here no need for antennas polarization change, actually I was going to do that today but I'll leave it then. We checked the connectors, realligned the antennas and now get around -61dB signal strength and SNR jumps like a crazy from 20dB to 12dB, what could be causing that? We installed the bridges and antennas very close to huge telecoms antennas, do you think that could be causing the low SNR values?
On the other hand, we have around 200 PCs connecting a server on the other side. I deployed WPA-TKIP encryption so we did some tests. WIth around 20 stations connected we have a very good and stable link. Those 20 PCs generate about 200Kbps traffic. Now, when we connect around 200 PCs that generate around 2.5Mbps the link saturates very quickly and responses to the server over the link come to 300-500ms and worse, as opose with the 20 PCs, the responses are about 2-3ms.
Another observation, when we disable the encryption and connect all the 200 PCs, the link seems to be stable and responses from the server are mainteined at around 30ms, it jums occasionaly to 60-70ms but accasionally.
Do you think low values of SNR could be causing this? What can we do in this situation? We cannot leave the client without any security on the wireless link.
Please respond today if you can, I am at the client's site already so I could use your expertise.
    Thanks in advance,
    Remi

  • RF Polarization of Airport Extreme Gigabit Internal Antennas

I've taken a "Snow" Airport apart and there are two approximate 1/4 wave elements mounted in an almost slant 45 degree orientation which would give the Airport a good mix of Horizontal and Vertical polarization.
The Airport Extreme Gigabit mechanical configuration is different. Does anyone

I seem to be having issues with a wired connection as well.
With wireless I can load the CNBC homepage in a second, and wired it can take almost 30 seconds to load.
I talked to support twice and we ended up replacing the 2TB Time Capsule.
Same issues with the new one.

  • Difference between  Circular, Rectangular and Free form Antenna??

    Hi All,
What is the difference between a Circular, Rectangular and a Free form field Antenna other than the physical appearance?
    Thanks,
    Shridhar..

    Hi Shridhar,
    RFID Antennas
RFID antennas are always connected to an interrogator. This allows for the transmission of signals to and from the tag.
    Antenna Design
Depending on the design, antennas can be either mono-static or bi-static:
•Mono-static antennas are based on a principle by which a single antenna transmits a signal coming from the interrogator to the area as well as receives a signal coming from tags and these functions are switched in fractions of seconds. This requires use of a circulator in a reader that multiplexes the receive and transmit signals through a single port. There is some loss and phase distortion due to the use of a circulator.
•Bi-static antennas include two antennas, where one antenna is dedicated to transmitting, and the other antenna is dedicated to receiving. Both dedicated antennas can be but do not have to be in the same casing. In bi-static antenna, a circulator is not required, which improves the performance and sensitivity of the antenna.
    Antenna Polarity
Antenna polarity is very important because it affects the quality of communication between the interrogator and tag.
The interrogator's antenna and the tag's antenna should have the same polarization. If polarization is not realized, a severe loss in signal, along with a drastic decrease in a read range, which results in unsuccessful communication with a tag, can be experienced.
<b>Polarization can be either circular or linear.</b>
Linear polarization is relative to the surface of the earth.
<b>Linear polarization can also be either horizontal or vertical:</b>
•Horizontally polarized signals propagate parallel to the earth.
•Vertically polarized signals propagate perpendicular to the earth.
Antennas with circular polarization can receive signals from both the vertical and horizontal planes by injecting the signal at two points on the antenna radiated slightly out of phase creating a rotating effect on the field. However, there is a slight loss of signal strength, due to the constructive and deconstructive effect of the field being slightly out of phase.

  • Help on 1300 series and Antennas

Can somebody give me recommendations on what I should use for blanket wireless access for multiple condo unit building 4 stories high? I was looking to use the 1300 series and possibly the Air ANT24120 antenna. I want it to penetrate through walls a floors. If anybody has any past experience on this, could you recommend this or another product? Also I am looking to see how far the signal can carry. I am trying to cut down on AP's.

I would make sure to get a good site survey done and make sure that you stay well within the FCC regulations for maximum transmission power. I have done several of these installations using the 1500 series APs strategically placed around the building. Also bear in mind you could have polarization issues as this building is so tall. The unfortunate truth here is that complete penetration of a building this size is very hard to achieve. I have a list of excellent CPE devices that will allow you to bring the system into the building at key density points. Feel free to contact me for those at

  • Need a little help with antenna selection for a COW

    Hello fella's...
Ok, so I've gotten myself a little confused here and would like some recommendations.  We are ordering new COWs (Computer On Wheels) for the hospital and they will be using an Intel 6205 Wireless Chip which is a/b/g/n 2x2.  The two new floors these devices will be going on will be our first internal hospital entry into 802.11n which I force the clients to run in the 5ghz range for N.   Previous to this, all of my cows are G clients and use a 2.2dbi rubber duck for 2.4ghz.   I will be using 1142 AP's, if not 3502 and no I have not performed a survey yet as the floor is still in early construction, but equipment is required to be ordered now.  I can tell you that I will be surveying for a voice grade.  I suppose my confusion comes from what is the best antenna (obvious open ended question) for this card, being it has two connectors for the 2x2.  Again, typically I would use a 2.2 dbi rubber duck for either 2 GHz or dual band 2/5 GHz.  Is dual rubber ducks at 6inch spacing (half wavelength met on 2.4 GHz fall back) suffecient or are there other factors involved with the N.
    Thanks,
    Raun

I guess I'm under the impression that if you put a dual band antenna on a device, regardless wether it's a 2.4 radio or 5GHz radio, that the antenna would work, as it's well, dual band.  Am I wrong in that assumption leolaohoo?
I have heard back from wyse today with a little information on their provided antenna, but no radiation pattern.  This antenna would be referred to as the 'rubber duckie' style 'dipole'.  I'm not really having much of a choice as it stands now, as I am limited on space(height) to place the antenna and time (chinese new year for manufacturer).  However, one other question. I note that the 1142 and 3502's are horizontally polarized and this omni is vertically polarized.  With my limited understanding of antenna's, that's not a good thing... what is the typical associated 'cost' of a vertical to a horizontal?

  • 1140 AP's internal antenna radiation pattern

    Is it right or not?
    1. Cisco Aironet 1040, 1140, 3500i Series Integrated Antennas Diagrams show Azimuth Plane Radiation Patterns and Elevation Plane Radiation Patterns when AP is mounted vertically on the wall (red LED above Cisco logo). So "Zero" on Azimuth Plane points to direction rectangular to AP's case plane (mounting wall plane), "Zero" on Elevation Plane points to ceiling and "180 degrees" points to floor?
    2. Radio waves polarization in this case would be linear, in direction from ceiling to floor?
    3. If AP would be mounted horizontally on the ceiling, then polarization would be in direction parallel to floor axis X and rectangular to floor axis Y? So induced signal on notebook integrated antenna, oriented rectangular to floor axis X, would be near zero?

    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/wireless/ps7183/ps469/product_data_sheet09186a008008883b.html

    Hi Valentine,
Here is Cisco Antenna Pattern Guide:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/wireless/ps7183/ps469/prod_white_paper0900aecd806a1a3e.html
I had same problem on that, because the antenna pattern of 1130, 1140 and guides are not so clear.
From the guide you can see plate antenna forward direction which means Cisco logo direction ( if you place on wall it pointing horizintol, looking front) is Y, vertical Z, horizintol X(Left and right side), then if you see the 1130, 1140 antenna pattern. Azimuth is almost 360degrees which means doesn't matter Y and X (Ф), the problem Y and Z(Ө) , from the guide there mentioned most of the antenna Y(direction front) is 0degree, and some of them 90degree showed. So now if you trying to understand 1140 antenna Ө pattern, it would be no wave directing to front, you can see from 20-30degree till 90degree to tilting down side, and up side is like this, and pattern is 180degree waving to back side of antenna , which sounds crazy, so it is making complicated.
I have 1130, if you see 1130, from that point front radio pattern of that antenna tilting down side around 45degree(from 15-60) and also 180degree to backside .
I am confused and maybe what i think is true because on 1130 Elevation beamwidth is 50degree so it would be almost.
But other hand if Y front side is directing 270degree on the antenna pattern elveation there is no need worry we all, it is almost 180degree which means covering whole front of antenna Ө tangle.

  • WRT54G V7 Left antenna output is not working.

    Hi,
I had a new WRT54G V7 and discoverd that the left antenna (facing the front of the device) is giving no output. The right-hand version is working properly.
Now I received a RMA and it is still the same! Already upgraded to v7.00.1, but without success.
I know that I have to use both antennas, but if one of them is giving no output, what is the point?
    Anyone the same experience?
    Thanks and regards,
    Rob.

Hi, before configuring the router I removed both antennas to prevent getting access from or to another device.
After configuration I placed only one antenna, went one floor down to check connection with my laptop and was surprised that the laptop could not find the router.
Took the laptop upstairs, placed it nearby the router and got a connection. Walking away with the laptop showed me that the signal was very poor (lost connection in the next room, seperated by a brickwall).
Then I swapped the antenna to the right-hand connector and saw a very strong signal, also downstrairs. (My previous router, a WRT54G v2.0 did give the same strength on both antennas).
I use the original firmware, so I cannot see  or change anything (at least I do not know how) to adapt antenna settings. Or is there a hidden field that I do not know of?

  • TS1702 When I update to IOS6 on my 4S Facebook does not work properly, the news feed never updates it only says no new storeys and shows a picture of an antenna. When I reset my phone and go back to IOS5 Facebook works fine. What's up with IOS6 ????

When I update my iPhone 4S to iOS six Facebook does not work properly the newsfeed doesn't load properly and I can never see what's going on all I see is a picture of an antenna and a little thing underneath it says no new stories when I reset my phone back to iOS 5 then it works just fine and I don't have any issues so there must be something wrong with iOS six that isn't letting Facebook load properly

No I did not use any unauthorized methods for anything, I simply reset my phone back to factory.

  • Analog TV, digital TV antennas

I've been getting my cable through Comcast for awhile now. I used to have more extensive cable channels but with their switch to digital, my channels have dropped down to just the free channels and a few other meaningless channels that no one ever watches.
I have looked into pricing for the more expensive cable packages through Comcast, Dish, DirectTV etc. and have decided that I really don't want to spend the money on that given my TV viewing habits and my ability to view programs on the internet. The only channel I will actually miss is the Fox News Channel.
I am paying $19/month, including taxes, for the channels I *think* I can get with an antenna for free. I have older TV sets all purchased 10-15 years ago that still work fine. I don't have the ability to put a massive antenna on my rooftop. Can anyone make any recommendations for a TV antenna that will work with my older TVs? Or, does anyone know whether the new TVs come with built in antennas? I am not adverse to buying a nice new TV for my living room.  I heard that [another retailer] has a bunch of inexpensive TV sets if BestBuy doesn't have what I am looking for.
In the end, anything I choose will end up paying for itself - eventually - once I stop paying Comcast $19/month for nothing. I just need a direction to head in. This is not something I know much about.

Also, do I need a digital converter box and a tv antenna? I've been researching this but it is very confusing to me.
Yes, with older TVs you need a converter box.  Newer TVs all come with built in digital tuners.  You'll get far higher quality if you get a new HDTV.
Note:  Unlike the old analog signals where image quality depended on signal strength, with digital signals you pretty much either get the signal or you don't.
If you click on the antenna reccommendation on antennaweb.org (in your case "yellow UHF"), it'll give a more detailed description - http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/antenna.aspx?color=Yellow .  Yellow UHF is a category of antennas - small omnidirectional.  Good news is that this means your TV stations are close by, as that is the smallest antenna category there is!  Basically, any antenna made by a member of the CEA will have its category on the packaging.
If mounted indoors, you may need to go one or two size classes up from the CEA reccommendations.
I reccommend antennas from the following manufacturers:  Winegard, Channel Master, Antennas Direct
I reccommend preamps from the following manufacturers:  Winegard, Channel Master
You say you can't have a large roofmount antenna - what about a smaller roofmount antenna?  Getting the antenna on the roof helps a LOT.

  • When I use a GSI external antenna for WiFi I first get a message that "Firefox is already running but not responding etc", and then Firefox crashes. Can anyone help please?

Because of weak WiFi signal I need to use an external antenna (GSI USB wireless WIFI long range network adapter). My computer can see the signal clearly and shows that I am connected to the right network. But when I try to launch Firefox I get a message that "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." When I click "OK" Firefox tries to load websites but gives up and reports "Problem Loading". It looks like Firefox is having trouble "seeing" the signal from the external antenna. What do I need to do please?

Try Ubuntu support, I don't think your problem is with Firefox - it will use the connection that the Operating System "makes". I'm a real noob with Ubuntu myself, and don't think I can help you figure out the problem.

  • Which type of Antenna connectors does the WAP4410N have?

    Hi.
I recently purchased a Linksys WAP4410N. While I was surprised how much reach I get out of this thing, I now consider maybe upgrading it with a few better antennas.
I basically just need to know if the antenna connectors are RP TNC or some other standard (like N-type), as I've read through data sheets, googled, and just couldn't find it out.
    Thanks.
    Regards
    Markus

Hi Markus... so glad you started this thread, otherwise I would not have known the HGA7S-EU is no longer available! My present plan calls for an ethernet cable to be run in under the floor to eliminate my present WAP4410N to WET200-G5 link, and while I am doing this to run in a second cable to a new 3rd WAP4410N to improve wireless coverage into the garden. The intention was to transfer the 2xHGA7S-EU aerials from the Bridge to the new AP (both are R-SMA connectors) and buy a third (new) HGA7S-EU to complete the set.
Despite some considerable time spent on eBay and all the main UK supplier websites tonight, I cannot find any of these available for sale now. I have posted a Want It Now on eBay to see what turns up. Glad you got a solution to your situation, and many thanks for highlighting this issue for me.

  • HP Media Smart not recognizing Digital Antenna after upgrading to Windows 7

HP Pavilion dv6t-1200 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC
I recently upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista and ever since I cannot seem to have HP Mediasmart recognize the digital formats for signal input. It only shows analog cable and analog antenna.
I also seem to have lost the all-in-one navigation tools from where I can choose if I need tv or dvd, etc.
I tried upgrading the driver for the tuner as recommended by HP Assistant but it does not seem to work. I also tried upgrades from the following page recommended by HP for my system:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=4063&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3945150
I used to get more channels with HP Media Smart than with Windows Media Center. Btw, Windows Media Smart works just as fine after the upgrade.
    Please help. Thanks.

Here is a copy of my reply to this problem in another post.
This may be of no help but here goes. I am not a real computer person. Anyway I had the same problem and also lost the digital part of my tuner when I downloaded the W7 mediasmart live TV. After a lot of attempts to fix stuff I uninstalled Mediasmart live TV. It worked. Next I downloaded the W7 live TV. Installed but could not find it. Desperate I restored the Vista version from the partition. Could not find that either. Next I did a search (start menu) for mediasmart live tv. One thing was found which I clicked on. It appears another install took place.
Now Live TV works and I get full screen. Also my tuner went back to analog antenna/cable and digital antenna/cable (QAM). I really have no explaination for this but I'm back with W7. Can't find a version number but it's 71 mb in size at
    c:\program files (x86)\Hewlett-Packard\media\live tv"
    Dumb luck
So that's what happened. I think the uninstall had something to do with solving the problem. Why I could not find the W7 download is beyond me. I was at a point where I didn't think I could make it worse so I thought I'd try anything. No TV problems with Windows Media Center during any of this.

  • Wi-Fi: no hardware installed. Caused by the antenna position?

I own an early 2011 MBP 15” with ML 10.8.3, suffering from the well known problem of Airport WiFi (hardware not installed). BT is perfectly working.
I would like to share my thoughts on the (low) probability of fixing this issue.
    That’s my story, till now.
I unsuccessfully attempted the usual remedies, such as the SMC and NVRAM reset.
Since my Mac is still covered by the AppleCare, I contacted the online support. Again, unsuccessful SMC and NVRAM reset. The support personnel told me it is a hardware problem. This sentence “slightly” worried me, and the rest of the story confirmed my darkest concerns.
I contacted an Apple technical assistance center for fixing the problem. 2 days later, they gave me my MBP back, after the flat (ribbon) cable substitution. We tested together the WiFi in the Apple center: no problem at all. Unfortunately, once back in my office, at first startup the WiFi again refused to run (and still it refuses now, ab. 24 hrs after the repair attemp).
Now, I’m working with a mini-dongle, a solution not properly fitting with a 2000 US$ Mac, bought for professional use. I’ll go back to the technical assistance again, but w/o much hope. The reason of my pessimistic thought arises from an idea I have on the WiFi antenna position inside the Mac.
I’ve never dismantled a MacBook Pro, but I learnt that the WiFi antenna is placed in a very strange location, that is: practically INSIDE THE MONITOR HINGE (is it true?)
This is a very delicate place for any notebook, because it is … mobile.
Yes, it seems that the antenna (mobile, in the monitor hinge) is connected to the motherboard (fixed, in the aluminum case) with a flat ribbon, and it rotates with the monitor. That is, every time we open or close the MBP (let's say, for instance 2-4 times/day?)
    And now, that’s my concern.
The movement involves a mechanical action on plugs and pins, with possible and subtle deformation of such pins, plugs and their supports. Again, that location is subject to heating up and, then, to possible thermal action combined with mechanical ones. That could mean that, very rarely and with erratic and random evidence, the WiFi antenna can loose its connection, plugs may slip off, perhaps for the monitor movement as well as for small tolerances in production and/or assembly steps (in my opinion may be matter of microns).
This could explain the erratic results of the repairs. Erratic means ranging from complete success to temporary stops or recovery, without any predictable behavior.
And now… HOLD ON TIGHT !
If my hypothesis is correct (doubt is mandatory), the problem may be CAUSED BY THE DESIGN CONCEPT of the MBP, concerning the WiFi location. This may have a direct influence on the erratic results of the technical assistance work, reported in many forums. Then, it is very difficult to foresee the problem will be 100% definitely fixed by the ordinary technical assistance. To tell all the truth, if I’m right (doubt is mandatory), a well lowest score may be regarded a first class result in these conditions.
On the other hand, placing the airport (WiFi antenna) inside the metal (aluminum) case, may also have its operating, and even worse, drawbacks.
I want to point out that I’m not complaining about the Apple support and technical assistance, both friendly and skilled, and I’m not blaming the Apple design department.
However, I’ve a few consultancy experiences about operating and safety problems reported in electric and electronic consumer products. In many cases, sneaky and subtle problems were due to particular design choices, correct for “almost” 100% of equipment. Almost means: random problems for a number of equipment with NO STATISTICAL RELEVANCE. And this may be a problem for us, “poor consumers” when facing the producer. No statistical relevance can mean: problem not recognized by the producer. This is just to be realistic. Continuous improvement is required from Apple, in any case.
Last but not least, this is an useful video on MBP WiFi:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsSIUs7jzQc
PS: I’m writing from Rome - Italy

Sorry for the late reply. I had a bad experience with the Apple Store and the 'Genius' Bar where I live. However, in the end, I received my MacBook Pro back from repair and everything is working.
Like I said in my previous post, the first time the Wi-Fi broke, I was using Lion. The mother (Logic) board was replaced as well as the Wi-Fi card.
The second time it broke, I was using Mountain Lion. Booting up the Recovery partition and Snow Leopard (new install) did not solve the issue. The Apple Store confirmed that the Wi-Fi card was broken through various testing, which I observed.
Since the attenna wires for the Wi-Fi run through the display, we decided the next logical step was to replace the Wi-Fi card and the display. The reasoning is that there could have been a short or cross connection in the attenna wiring that was causing the Wi-Fi cards to short-out/burn-out. The Bluetooth continued to work in both cases the Wi-Fi failed, meaning that it was unlikely a cable problem.
Since the display and wi-fi have been replaced (20121025), I've had no problems. The wi-fi card is working.
I'm glad the kext file solution has worked for you. I've seen posts on this solution; however, after determining that this was indeed a hardware failure (by using Recovery console, booting from Snow Leopard, and using Hardware Troubleshooter (it didn't even see the Wi-Fi) ), I didn't bother with fiddling with the kext (driver) files. Besides, this hardware is supposed to be designed to work with the OS without any problems whatsoever. Shame on Apple if they don't ship proper drivers for their hardware!
