Any cures for dropped frames

It seems as though ever since I upgraded to Tiger and FCEHD 3 I getting more dropped frames when I play back my video sequences in the timeline. Aside from the info in the dropped frames warning box, of which I all to familiar with now, is there something else I can try to rectify the problem. BTW my scratch disk is a 120GB Ezquest Cobra 2 drive.
Thanks.

Thanks Al. I've checked all the easy stuff and still am getting drops. I'm beginning to suspect that a defrag is in order. My external hd is partitioned (80GB for video and 40GB for music files). The drive was completely zeroed out when I set up the partition.
The dropped frames occur in the exact same spots in the same clips in the sequence. These clips play fine in the Viewer and I had no problems when I captured them.
How does this approach sound:
Recapture the clips and see if the dropped frames resolve.
If that doesn't work then back up my external drive and defrag it. Hopefully my project will not be negatively affected.
Lastly buy another external hd and dedicate it to video files.
How does that approach sound? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Any cures for my narcoleptic 17" PB G4?

My 1.67 Ghz 17" AlBook is currently used as a desktop machine (the monitor has a band running vertically on the screen that we can't afford to have repaired) with a 23" Apple monitor and other assorted devices (scanner, printers, etc.) attached. Up until recently things were running fine. I had it set to turn the monitor off after being idle for about an hour but the brain was kept running for Increase (Folding@Home). Recently I downloaded and installed the latest Apple updates and now the computer is going to sleep randomly and without any warning. I've tried everything from the simple stuff like verifying the permissions with disk utility to the much more extreme zapping PRAM and even resetting the PMU. I thought that maybe the external hard drive I use for storage was perhaps pulling the system to sleep, but that isn't the case. Things will run fine for a few minutes then POW! It goes to sleep. Usually it will reawaken with a key hit or mouse movement but not always. And it seems that if I try doing something like move some files or sort through some music in iTunes then the sleeping happens much more quickly.
ANY suggestions on what to do or try next?

Upon further review: Nope. The software reinstall has not helped. I got back up to 10.5.3 and the problem was back. Now, in the midst of my second reinstall the sudden sleep problem is back. Sometimes all I have to do to wake the machine is move the mouse or hit the return key. Sometimes that isn't enough. And sometimes all I have to do it wait a few minutes. GRR.It appears that after the third or fourth drop off the machine just won't wake up again. I have to take the battery out, remove the power adapter and hold the power button until the machine fires up again. Sometimes...
Anyone else out there feeling my pain? Any solutions?

  • Is there any shortcut for "View Frame Info" instead of right click -- This Frame -- View Frame Info.

    Dear Bob,
I downloader a VLS Streamer from the Apple app store.  It requires some kind of helper software to run, which, as far as I can tell from the video at the developer's site, allows one to download content from one's mobile device to their computer.  Since I don't have a compatible computer for my iPad to link to, the instructions don't help my situation.  I emailed them with my query and will probably hear from them sometime this week.
I've lived with this problem for the 3 months I've had my iPad, and I'll keep after it until I have a solution.  But right now, I've run out of steam.  If this lead helps me to resolve my issue, I'll come back and HELPFUL or RESOLVED every response you've given.  I'm very grateful for your help.  Sorry I'm so utterly clueless.
Thanks once again.  Please don't cringe if I get back to you another day.

  • I confront the message "blocked plug-in" on most included windows of safari browser internet sites on my old Macbook running snow leopard 10.6.8. Adobe flash updates are disconnected by Safari before they can be downloaded. Any cure for this?

I don't know if this question has already posted but if not here is my problem: I repeatedly get a blank screen except for the error message "blocked plug in" when browsing in safari and trying to view web page included videos. Is this an Adobe flash player rejection? I keep getting Adobe flash player update messages but when I click download this is blocked by Safari or OS security. Any user-fix out there?

Which Safari? Which Flash? I'm running Safari  5.1.10 (6534.59.10) w/Flash Player 13.0.0.214 and am not getting any of those messages. To get the latest Flash Player, go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer, download the latest version, and install it.

  • Any cure for MySQL date entry problem?

On user entry forms with a MySQL database, dates must be
entered as YYYY-MM-DD, which for Americans is counter-intitutive. I
know about the option to use a series of very long drop-down lists
to select each of the pieces, but I find that both cumbersome and
time consuming. I currently am using instructions to the user with
each date field, but that is clutzy.
Does anybody know of a way to use "mm/dd/yyyy"?

MySQL expects the dates to be stored as YYYY-MM-DD in a DATE
    or DATETIME
field. Use your script to convert from MM/DD/YYYY if
    necessary, before
you insert the date into the DB. If you're on PHP, have a
    look at its
date and time functions, especially strtotime() and
    strftime().

  • Drop frame - how do i know if my fotage has a drop frame?

hello, sorry about the stupid question, but dhow do i know if my fotage has a drop frame or not?
    thx

To see if the footage you captured was recorded with drop frame (the default) or no-drop frame timecode, right-click on a clip and select Item Properties to check the frame rate.
For the 'dropped frames' question, if there were timecode breaks or other problems with the recording on the tape, FCP will either abort capture at that point, or start a new clip depending on what you've told it to do in preferences. The dropped frames on capture condition can also happen if there is a data throughput problem (I/O error) during capture.
For dropped frames on playback, you may sometimes get that warning if your system can't keep up with RT playback. To see if there actually are dropped frames, go through that section of the clip frame-by-frame to see if there appear to be any.

  • DV NTSD drop-frame vs. non-drop-frame??

My impression has always been that DV NTSC is non-drop frame. I'm having to capture a 100 hours of DV tapes from a Sony WV-DR7 deck. FCP capture is giving me this warning:
"You are about to capture Non-Drop Frame media from a device currently detecting or configured for Drop Frame media. If you proceed, you may experience changes in logged in and out points, problems relinking media, or removal of master clip relationships."
The Sony is all in Japanese, and the rough translation manual does not mention drop frame \ non-drop frame setting choices on the deck.
Would anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?
    Ben

    Sorry to be confusing~~~~
What I meant was, since I wasn't sure if the VTR you are using actually shows the timecode window, or just a timecode counter (the Sony DSR-11's display does not show the colon/semicolon difference in the display that is supered on the non-digital video outs), I thought the quickest way to assess what flavor of TC you had was to play the tape and use "Capture Now" to capture a few seconds. Then you can look in the bin, check the media start column and see if there are semi-colons or colons. This would be helpful particularly if FCP is balking at capturing from your logged marks.
The other thing I was talking about was a case where I had been given DVCam copies of camera masters, to use for a rough cut. Because these tapes were work prints, they used old DVCam tapes. One of the tapes had originally had DF material on it. When the tape op made the workprint, he started recording the new NDF material about 10 seconds into the tape, he therefore left 10 seconds of DF bars at the head of the reel (the old material). I put the tape in a DSR-11, fast wound up to picture, and started logging. When I was at the end of the reel, I hit rewind on the machine so it would rewind while I was clearing up spelling errors, etc. The machine backed all the way to head of the tape, into the DF area.
So when I hit batch capture, the machine reported back to FCP that it had a tape with the correct name loaded, but the time code was in the incorrect format - the message you received. It took a while to figure it out, but when I wound the tape forward, so that it was in the picture portion of the reel, the machine was then outputting the code that FCP was expecting. So by "parking" the deck in the picture portion of the tape, it would cue correctly from the logged point.
Hope this explains it. hope you have a simple solution, too.

  • Drop Frame media warning

Im capturing footage from a DVCAM deck using the normal DV-NTSC Easy Setup, however, after logging the clips and preparing a batch capture, I'm getting a Warning prompt:
WARNING: You are about to capture Drop Frame media from a device currently detecting or configured for Non-Drop Frame media. If you proceed, you may experience changes in logged in and out points, problems relinking media, or removal of master clip relationships.
I've capture DV footage forever, and I've never had problem like this. This production house works in Drop Frame and my FCP is set for Drop Frame. I've tried setting the deck and FCP capture preset to Non Drop Frame yet I still get the prompt and the capture error (the capture is actually stopped as dropped frames were detected). Any help?

Thanks for your help. I tried right clicking on the In point (which isn't set) on the Browser and It had a check mark for non-drop frame. So I tried right clickin on Media Start and I had the option of Drop Frame or Non Drop Frame. I chose Drop Frame, but I still didn't see any change in the capture process. I just went to the User Preferences and turned off Abort Capture with Dropped Frames and it's capturing alright now. I'm still very mystified by this because I shut down the computer and tried the Batch Capture and it captured just fine (without the non drop frame prompt), but when I put in a new tape the prompt came up again when trying to capture. A restart of the computer didn't help this time.

  • Dropped Frames & Firewire Busses - A Discussion

A side discussion broke out on this recent thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=231733&tstart=0
and because this discussion is OT to the thread, I thought it might be helpful to start a new on-topic thread.
A number of FCP users have experienced dropped frames when capturing or outputting to tape while using a DV VCR/camcorder and a firewire drive for media on the same FW bus. There are many causes for dropped frames, but this discussion centers on the relationship between FW drives, DV devices, and using a single firewire bus.
Some say that having the DV device and the firewire media drive on the same bus can be a cause of dropped frames with some systems. Others disagree. I'm in the first camp, so I'll leave it to others to explain the other side.
I'm starting this thread to pick up where the side discussion on the thread linked above left off.
    In response to Hughes Video:
If I'm reading your post correctly, my opinion is that your testing doesn't adequately address the real world situation. In practice, the FW port on the DV device is receiving data at 3.6MB/sec and buffering. Then it sends a data stream to the FW bus at about 12MB/sec, where is again buffered before being sent to the destination drive.
The benchmark test results you noted don't predict what happens in the real world when capturing a DV stream from a VCR/camcorder to a FW drive. To do that, you need to be able to report in a time graph what the throughput is for every 1/30 of a second while capturing.
I'm not sure that's what Adam Wilt has done, but he's told me that he's done thorough testing that proves the points he's made. I don't know what testing that entails.
I do know, as I posted in the other thread, that when those who are having dropped frames separate the DV device from the FW drive on separate busses, their problems resolve. I don't know the technical reason for that, but I theorize that it has to do with the data moving and buffering in both directions on the same bus simulteneously. If the bus speed is decreased when both devices are on the same bus (whether daisy-chained or on separate ports), I don't know. But I know the problem resolves when you separate them.

this begs the question though: how do users of an
imac or a mini get around the limitations of one
internal harddrive and one firewire bus?
    zeb
They can't. iMac's are a consumer (and terribly sexy) computer. Make no mistake, if you are doing this for a living you need a PowerMac. Want less headaches with dropped frames and FW? Then take a closer look at better drives. G-Raid, Weibetech, and Granite Digital make the best out there, and invest in another FW 800 card for 'em. End of story.
Want to avoid dropped frames forever and ever with any video format? Forsake FW drives for fibre. SCSI is dying a slow but steady death IMHO.
Yeah, it all costs more, but you GET more (speed). Faster drives don't drop frames. Nothin' new there...
There is a tendancy with new users of NLE's to cut corners. Don't do that, because it results in unhappy NLEing.
Do I use FW drives? Of course I do, and use exclusively the above brands, I've clients who want to keep all media ever captured. (also a good idea) but I include in my invoices the cost of buying more FW drives to do the job. It works, I don't drop frames, have happy clients, and drop frame free system. I'm using the G-Raids for uncompressed storage and FW 800 Weibetech and Granite digital rigs for DV res storage. It works beautifully.

  • Corrupt media causing dropped frames? FCP shuts down without warning.

    Hello,
I have a project that was working fine, then one day we started getting numerous dropped frame warnings during playback on the timeline (specifically during sequences that have multiclips); then two days later, playback causes the entire project to freeze and FCP shuts down.
We are on 17" MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667
    Mac OS X 10.4.9
External drive: Western Digital 1 TB, My Book Pro Edition, FW 800, 7200rmp, 650GB used
FCP 5.1.4, DV-NTSC project, source media captured from DVCam
I have tried all the normal adjustments for dropped frames issues including boosting the ram allocated to FCP, closing additional sequences and applications, hard drive is formatted OS X Extended, etc. Multiclip squences have only 2 video/audio streams at a time, so I can't imagine that its bottle necking here.
One thing to note is that the second external drive, which has duplicates of all the same media and copy of the most recent project is working fine. The only difference is that the problem drive also has media that was ripped from DVDs using Mac The Ripper, and then compressed using MPeg Streamclip into .dv (then changed to .mov before importing into FCP). We are using the DVD material as scratch until we can obtain the original footage as we get closer to going online. We are in the process of obtaining permissions from directors/distributors/studios, but this obviously takes time.
DVD material is totaling close to 55GB. Also, even though the clips are .mov, we are still getting a red bar and having to render the media. Audio is at 48hz so no problem there. Not sure why it still requires us to render.
Is it possible that the project is somehow corrupt? Is all the rendered material too taxing for FCP? Am I handling this extra footage inefficiently?
I have spent hours on this forum looking for the answer, but haven't come across a solution yet. Thank you for your help.

I'm not sure I understand. You have duplicate media on another drive? You're having problems playing back the media from one drive but NOT the other? Sounds like your drive might be failing. Try running Diskwarrior (to repair any possible directory structure problems) and techtoolpro (to see if there's any physical problem).
I have had problems with multiple firewire drives from different manufacturers connected at the same time. Try disconnecting everything BUT the problem drive.
You shouldn't need to do any rendering if the clip settings exactly match the sequence settings. Try this: select one clip, control click and choose make multiclip sequence. Is there a red bar in the sequence? If not, your clip settings to not match your sequence settings in the problem sequence.
    Good luck

  • External Drive Dropping Frames

    Hey,
I am in a Post Production class at GSU and I am having some tech problems here. I am running Final Cut Pro 5 on a Mac G5. We are required to have External HDD, but everytime I play a sequence I keep dropping frames. My HDD is a 160 GB, 7200 RPM, Western Digital in an Adaptec enclosure connecting via FireWire. Any ideas?

    Search here for dropped frames.
There are dozens of possible explanations. the most likely is user error and that can be caused by dozens of simple things. You start with the simple things and try to eliminate one at a time. Cable, card, system prefs, FCP setup, FCP prefs, FW pathway. It's all in the manual, what you can and should not do.
Your post production class instructor should be able to help you much more rapidly than we possibly can.
