AP1230 and 123-8.JEA1 and WLSE 2.13.1

Hi all
Cisco recently released the IOS 12.3-8.JEA1 which seem to fix some issues with the communication between the WDS and the WLSE (SNMP Timeout). But the current version of the WLSE only "supports" images up to release 12.3-8.JEA.
Can I savely install the newer release on our WDS or could they loose the communication with the WLSE?
Thanks,
Patrick

Hi Patrick,
you are right. The WLSE shows the devices as not supported. But on the other ahnd i have some installations running with these image at different costumers without any loss of service.
Radio Management, Archiving, Location Manager and some more services are running fine.
My experiences are leading to the conclusion that you can install the IOS Image.
Best regards,
Frank

  • WDS - WLCCP between WDS AP and WLSE

We have successfully configured an AP as WDS and registered infrastructue Access Points. The WLSE has also successfully been authenticated by the WDS AP. My problem is when I move the WLSE onto a different subnet it looses the connection. I understand the WLCCP uses multicast, is this also true for conversation between the WDS and WLSE? Do I need to enable Multicasting on my router?

Do you use an external radius server or the local radius server to configure your ap to be an WDS AP.
Can i get a copy of your config i am struggling to get AP authenticate with local radius but it is not working to well?

  • WLC and WLSE

    Hi Netpro
what is the difference between the WLC and WLSE?
    thanks

Basically the WLSE is no longer around:)  the WLSE was a management box for autonomous ap's.  The WLC manages lightweight access points and that is really what everyone is moving towards if not already.

    hallo
in a wireless network with WDS service and WLSE, all Infrastructure APs are registered to WDS. To manage alarms, faults etc in Infrastructure APs the logs must be sent to the WDS or directly to WLSE ?
    francesco

You have to send the logs to WLSE.

  • WDS - and WLSE as radius server

    Hi all
we have a warehouse with 10 ap's once of them is wds master to control the roaming function, to become part of the wds they all have to authenticate with a radius server, so i believe, what I want to know is , if I lost the WLSE on my main site where all the udernames and passwords are foe each ap, what would happen?

    can anyone help with this?

  • WDS AND WLSE

Hi all , one we have set up the wds, what would happen if my wlse device broke? would this take down my wds service ?

Sorry I forgot to answer this.
As I mentioned, WLSE is just monitoring.
Only If WLSE is being used as Radius server, then the NEW authentications might fail.
"Might", because remember that WDS will try to cache the credentials, for example, for roaming.
But sometimes it cache it for a long time. And additionally the current authenticated users will still be associated and authenticated. So only if a  new user trys to associate and authenticate, you will notice that the authentication is not working.
Now, the other possibility is that you are using a backup WDS and or backup radius server. So everything will keep working as expected.

Have you enabled multicast mode on the controller ?
If so, in what mode ? Unicast or multicast ?
If you selected multicast mode, do you see the controller joining the original stream and sending it to the LWAPP distribution group to the other APs ?

  • WLSE states no measurement report received on AP scan

    I have a netwok with 1240's with fw 123-8ja2 WLSE:2.13
    30 AP's
All AP's are registred to the WDS. The WLSE properly authenticated to the WDS (setting registry keys). All AP's are managed by the WLSE. Radio management is switched on on all AP's.
When I do a AP radio scan (or walkabout) i get "no measurement report received". from every AP in that scan on almost every power step. Sometimes, a Power step completes OK.
Has anyone seen this before, and what is causing this?
I've added a screenshot of the WLSE

    News :)
Cisco released IOS 12.3-8JEA1 which has the following in the release notes:
CSCsg91315?WDS do return reportS to WLSE without problems
    And this bug is:
Symptom:During a WLSE radio scan, Infrastructure APs will fail internittently; sometimes not sending appropriate reports to the WLSE from the WDS. When the reports are missing, the WLSE is unable to complete the task and WLSE fails the job.
    Conditions:AP 1100 series, 12.3(8)JEA code, WLSE 2.13
Workaround:Deleting the device from WLSE inventory and rediscovering makes the job run successfully, but only temporarily; after a period of time (less than a day) the jobs will begin failing again.
Further Problem Description:When the AP addresses are hashed in memory, some addresses hash to the same value. When two APs have the same hash vallue, one of them is dropped. This also affects the ability to run Assisted Config jobs.
I'm not shure if this really fixes it, but it sounds good at least :)
    Anybody going to try out?
Sadly the current WSLE doesn't show this image as supported :(

  • WLSE Radio Scan Problems

I have recently set up WDS at a remote campus. I scheduled a radio scan for 4:00am so as not to interfere with active users. The scan completed but not successfully. I got an error message regarding the WDS and I can not determine the reason. I have attached the Job Log from the WLSE.
All the AP's are registered with the WDS AP. The WDS AP is dedicated with the radio turned off. The WDS is in an authenticated state with the WNM. I'm not sure what the problem could be.

This has been successfully resolved with the help of TAC. The issue is actually a bug in the ACS v3.3.3. The bug ID is CSCsb47726. Once I applied the patch (replacement of a specific dll) the WDS and ACS and WLSE completely authenticated to one another.

  • WLSE 1130 console connection

I just got a new WLSE 1130 as an RMA. I tried to connect to the console port to do the initial configuration. However I'm not getting any response from it. I used a female - female RS-232 DB9 cross-over cable, a female - female RS-232 DB9 straight through cable and 2 DB9 Mod taps with the silver/grey RJ-45 cable that Cisco usually sends with their switches. Is there anything else I can try?

    Hi Roland,
I don't mean to offend you, but are you connected to the right serial port (back panel)
shown as number 4 in the attached picture of the back panel. I have connected to the wrong one
so I know first hand, (was not a magical moment!!)
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/cscowork/ps3915/products_installation_guide_chapter09186a00803629e5.html#wp1028600
Attach a console or connect via Telnet or SSH to the WLSE.
If you are using a console, make sure you are attaching it to the correct port:
For the WLSE 1105, use the serial port on the front panel; do not use the serial port on the back panel as the console port.
For the WLSE 1130 and WLSE 1130-19, use the serial port on the back panel as the console port.
Use hyperteminal set at 9600 8 n 1 (no flow control).
As I said before I've done this myself and didn't realise my mistake until someone else looked at the setup with a different set of eyes.
    Hope this helps!

    Using the CLI
Follow the steps below to reload the wireless device image using the CLI. When the wireless device
begins to boot, you interrupt the boot process and use boot loader commands to load an image from a
TFTP server to replace the image in the wireless device.
Note Your wireless device configuration is not changed when using the CLI to reload the image file.
Step 1 Open the CLI using a Telnet session or a connection to the wireless device console port.
Step 2 Reboot the wireless device by removing power and reapplying power.
Step 3 Let the wireless device boot until it begins to inflate the image. When you see these lines on the CLI,
    press Esc:
    Loading "flash:/c350-k9w7-mx.v122_13_ja.20031010/c350-k9w7-mx.v122_13_ja.20031010"
Step 4 When the ap: command prompt appears, enter the set command to assign an IP address, subnet mask,
and default gateway to the wireless device.
Note You must use upper-case characters when you enter the IP-ADDR, NETMASK, and
DEFAULT_ROUTER options with the set command.
Your entries might look like this example:
    ap: set IP_ADDR 192.168.133.160
    ap: set NETMASK 255.255.255.0

Step 5 Enter the tftp_init command to prepare the wireless device for TFTP.

Step 6 Enter the tar command to load and inflate the new image from your TFTP server. The command must include this information:
? the -xtract option, which inflates the image when it is loaded
? the IP address of your TFTP server
? the directory on the TFTP server that contains the image
? the name of the image
? the destination for the image (the wireless device Flash)
Your entry might look like this example:
    ap: tar -xtract tftp://192.168.130.222/images/c350-k9w7-tar.122-13.JA1.tar flash:
    C1240-k9w7-tar.123-8.tar

Note If you do not press the spacebar to continue, the process eventually times out and the wireless
    device stops inflating the image.
Step 8 : power cycle the ap.
Step 8 Enter the set BOOT command to designate the new image as the image that the wireless device uses
when it reboots. The wireless device creates a directory for the image that has the same name as the
image, and you must include the directory in the command. Your entry might look like this example:
    ap: set BOOT flash:/c350-k9w7-mx.122-13.JA1/c350-k9w7-mx.122-13.JA1
Step 9 Enter the set command to check your bootloader entries.

  • WNM Not Authenticated

I am trying to setup WDS and have on an access point and get the message that the WNM is not Authenticated. On the ACS Server it appears that both the AP and WLSE have passed authentication, any ideas?

I had this problem when I first configured the WLSE with an AP with WDS. After playing with it, I found that the WLSE needs to discover the WDS AP first. Make sure the username and password match on the WDS AP and on the WLSE. Here is what I have on my AP. It took a while, but after having it rediscover the AP a few times, it finally took. This was with v2.5. I have not set up any with v2.7 yet. Also, check the help on the WLSE. I don’t have an ACS in this design. Hope this helps.

    Hi,
I need some help with a radius configuration on AP 1210 and Wlse architecture.
I have 25 AP and both of them are radius server (a main and a backup). If the main radius is out of order the backup take the radius role. But if the radius backup start when the main radius is down the AP can't register on the backup and the backup can't exchange security key with the WLSE.
    Is it normal ?
Tanks by advance for your answers and your advices.

This is an expected behaviour. The backup will take over the responsibility and exchange security keys only when the primary is down.
