APC UPS Software

Curious to know if anyone uses an UPS with their Mac and if so, do you use the control software?
I have a APC 800 Backup UPS. When it was connected to my Windows machine, it communicated via a usb to rj45 connector. This allowed me to do maintenance checks on the UPS and also gave control to the UPS to shut down the system if power was loss for long time.
I am interested to hear if anyone has had problems with the software from apc, is their a similiar based application already on the apple?
And has anyone had sleep issues with when using the software?

I've just bought the APC Back-UPS RS 1500. I haven't installed any of the software, I decided I would keep it simple and rely on the support in OS X (via Energy Saver). I noticed that the menu bar status can show icon, percentage or time, yet when I choose time it says 'unknown'. Does this ever get calculated?
I was also wondering what you meant by "and the lack of being able to configure how it shuts down is a little strange". Within Energy Saver I have chosen "Settings for: UPS" > "UPS" and ticked "Shut down when time left on UPS Power is: 5 minutes". In what other ways could you configure it to shut down (other than the options in Energy saver which are "when has been on UPS power for X minutes", "when time left is..." and "when UPS power level drops to..."
Finally, am I being foolish choosing "when time left" when it's not displaying the amount of time left - or will that appear if/when it switches to battery mode?
Unfortunately I'm quite untrusting of third party software in situations like this, so if basic support within Energy Saver is adequate then that's what I'd prefer. Does anyone have an opinion about whether the APC software should be installed?

You are worrying about this way too much, simply connect the iMac using the supplied USB cable that comes with the UPS. Then check the Energy Saver settings in System Preferences and you will see the UPS and be able to control it.

  • UPS software within Tiger?

I am in the market for a UPS to protect my soon-to-be-delivered iMac. Does Tiger include UPS software or will I have to ensure that the UPS I purchase includes OS X Intel compatible software?
All info/advice will be very much appreciated.
    Roy

    Hi, Roy.
Kappy is generally correct, but there are some caveats I'd like to emphasize:
    • Some folks have had mixed results with different brands of UPS working with the built-in support under Tiger. In those cases, then one needs to resort to the UPS manufacturer's software, but not all have Mac software.
    • Likewise, I know of no one who has been able to get a USP with a serial port working with the Tiger UPS support via a Serial-to-USB cable.
Of all brands, APC's (American Power Conversion) UPS that have a USB port (most do now and the specs will tell you) work well with the built-in support under Tiger. When you connect the UPS to your Mac via USB, you'll see a new tab in Energy Saver preferences for the UPS.
Be sure to use their UPS Selector to assure you purchase a UPS appropriately sized for your needs. You should buy more UPS than you think you will need.
Note that some of the information above is from the "Protecting Against Power Problems" chapter of my book, Troubleshooting Mac® OS X, Tiger Edition.
    Good luck!

  • APC UPS Pro 1500, Single USB multiple Device

    Hello Community,
I am thinking to purchase APC UPS Pro 1500, this unit will supply power for 2 NAS and 1 Desktop. This is not a SMART UPS so it doesn't have Network Management Card slot and only has 1 USB port.
How do i configure 1 USB port to gracefully shutdown 1 Desktop and 2 NAS, is there any software that can achieve this or it is not possible?
    Thank You.

Hi, macjack. Thanks for your response.
So far, with the MP plugged directly into a wall outlet I've had no system initiated reboots or shut-downs.
I looked in the console log and there's so much stuff in there, I'm simply lost. Are there one or two keywords I should search for that might help in debugging the problem?
    Again, thanks.

  • UPS software for new MacPro?

The software for the APC UPS I just ordered appears to date back to OS X version 4.1 or thereabouts. Has anyone been using it successfully with Leopard? Has there been an update? Hope of an update?
    The UPS is RS BR1500va

You don't need the PowerChute software. Energy Saver will recognize the UPS and can be used instead of PowerChute. If you want to use the PowerChute software you can download version 1.3.4 from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. It works with Leopard, but as I said it isn't necessary. I'm using the same UPS with Energy Saver.

  • Apc ups settings ?

Just received an APC 1500 VA SmartUPS. Although my first mac was an SE, I've never had the inclination up to this point to protect my hardware (current) investment.
Question, can anyone give me any tips on how the settings for the UPS should be made. I'm not running a printer (laserjet) through it. I've basically got my dual 2.66 macpro w/ 4 internal HD's and a 23" ACD connected through it. In addition I'm also running XP through BootCamp for AutoCad only.
I'm assuming that I should install the APC AutoChute software for the ACad XP disk, but what are conventional settings for both the Mac and PC sides of things?
My basic problem is probably that I know I need a UPS, but don't really have any idea how to configure it.
    tia

Not sure about Windows- I'm only using Bootcamp when I'm on the computer (otherwise my MP is in Mac OS X), but in Mac OS 10.5, I've got my machine to shut down when the UPS hits 35% remaining battery power.
You could probably push that to 10%, though in my experience, UPS batteries start to stop in a non-linear fashion once they get past ~30% remaining capacity (they begin to drain faster), so it may or may not be long enough to shut the MP down.
As the upper post suggests, you'll find the UPS settings under Energy Saver in MOSX- it will show up as a separate power source in the drop down list ("Settings For:"), and when you select the UPS, a separate tab will appear where you can configure the shutdown parameters.
BTW: I don't know why you mentioned a laser printer- maybe because you read the warnings from APC on it, or maybe you actually own a laser printer. Either way, I was foolish to try this one day, and the UPS overloaded and then simply turned off. So it's not recommended that you even try to plug a laser printer into it- bubblejet, yes, but not a printer with a fuser inside it.

  • APC UPS Not Recognized by Mac Pro / Yosemite

Following an upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite, the Energy Saver Preferences Panel no longer recognizes my UPS (APC Back-UPS BR 1500G).  Additionally, the apcagent client v3.14.12 says the UPS is "unknown", returning a status of "network error".  Prior to the system upgrade, it worked nominally.
I performed the following trouble-shooting steps:
    1) after running About This Mac | System Report... the UPS does show up in the System Report, under Hardware | USB:  Back-UPS BR1500G FW:865.L2 .D USB FW:L2:
         - this exonerates the Mac Pro hardware as the cause of the problem
    2) changed the USB port receiving the cable from the UPS.  result: no change
    3) uninstalled/reinstalled agcagent.  result: no change
    4) performed a port scan using Network Utility.  It did not report port 3551 on localhost as open (should it?)
    5) deleted the Energy Saver preference files com.apple.PowerManagement.plist, com.apple.AutoWake.plist.  result: no change
    6) unplugged and turned off UPS, waited three minutes, replugged it and booted up.  result: no change
    7) unplugged USB cable for UPS from my Mac Pro, and plugged it into my PowerBook G4. result: Energy Saver preference pane properly reports the APC UPS
         - this exonerates the UPS and the USB cable as the cause of the problem
So short of doing a clean re-install of Yosemite, I am out of ideas.  I would appreciate some help!
    http://apcupsd-ups-control-software.10985.n7.nabble.com/Yosemite-apcagent-td8675 .html

APC's software was not installed.  That said, I uninstalled apcagent and rebooted.  Results were the same: Energy Saver doesn't detect the UPS.
An earlier thread on this topic hints that this may very well be a Yosemite software bug:  Yosemite doesn't detect my UPS
A user reports that a clean reinstall of Yosemite did not fix their problem.

  • APC UPS won't auto shutdown

I am using an Intel 2Ghz Intel Duo iMac with 10.5.2 and recently purchased an APC UPS Back-UPS ES 350.
The Energy Saver control panel recognizes this device and all seems to work well - however - no matter what I do I can't seem to get it to do an auto shutdown when I remove external power.
I have tried all combinations of settings - even tried the power chute software (then uninstalled). No luck. The thing just sails along until power is all out.
Anyone else having similar problems or know of solutions. I can't seem to find anyone with similar problems.

    Hey Matt,
I have the same issue, APC Back-ups 1300 with PowerChute installed. It is recognizes and knows the UPS has swtiched to backup power but never triggers the configured auto shutdown. I've tried both the standard UPS config and the PowerChute config.
I had to get a updated version of PowerChute that "worked" with the Intel processor, made no difference.
    Any luck yet?

  • APC UPS 1500VA

Hi. Is the APC UPS 1500va compatiable with a mac. We have just had it arrive at our building and it works fine. EG hook it up to the servers, cut the power and it the servers stay on. However the software that came with it (powercute) does not seem to work with mac. Is the any way around this?
    Thanks,
    Nathaniel

    Hi nathaniel Mcinnes-
By robust I mean does it supply enough power to meet the demands of everything that will be plugged into it and provide the amount of runtime that you will need based on that load.
This UPS may not last longer than 5 minutes or so depending on what all will be plugged into it.
    Luck-

  • Apc ups mavericks

My APC UPS (Back-ups ES750) has given problems since upgrading to Mavericks. My original battery registered in high percentages. After switching, the menu bar power indicator finally declined to less than 10%. I bought an APC replacement battery. It immediately charged to 100%, but the charge has been declining since. After about 10 days, it shows 35%. Is this a known problem with Mavericks' Power control software, or is this more likely a problem with APC?

Run the USB cable from the UPS to a free USB port on the computer. It should be seen in Energy Saver preferences. No special software is required.

  • APC UPS, Mountain Lion, and system restart problem

I have a Mac Pro (3,1) and it's been running Lion (10.7.x) for a long time. It's connected to an APC UPS XS 1500 via a USB cable for years. I've never had any problems with it.
Two weeks ago I updated to Mountain Lion (10.8.2). Since then I've returned to my machine to find that it had rebooted itself. After logging in, the system tells me that there was a problem and asks if I want to send the error report to Apple.
Yesterday, I tried unplugging the Mac Pro from the UPS, plugging it directly into a wall outlet, and disconnecting the USB-UPS cable. So far, I've had no problem with system restarts.
Has anyone had a similar problem? If so, did you solve it? How?
    Thank you.

  • ACS and APC UPS - radius authentication

Has anyone configured their APC UPS network managment cards to authenticate to ACS. The cards support radius, and I have that working, but the user only works as read only. How can I get them to work at at admin level ? I am not sure how to pass the attibutes back to the UPS.

Save the following into an ini file and use the CS Utils feature to import the UDF / VSA
Don't include the lines "====" bits!
You can rename the Admin/Device/ReadOnly to what ever you like as the interger value is what is important, the name is only used byt the ACS interface for displaying the options in the HTML.

  • One APC UPS power supply to two Mac Mini via one USB control cable

Is it possible to use one APC UPS to control two Mac Mini to shut down when on UPS? The APC unit only has one USB control cable.

I wouldn't buy a PSU today for a high-performance system for any reason unless all of the voltage rails were separately supplied.  AFAIK, only the Antec TruePower series and the PC Power & Cooling psu's can make that claim. Everyone else splits between the 5v and 3v rails, it seems to me--ie, with shared voltage rails the problem can be that when either the 3v or 5v rail demands more power then power is leeched from the shared rail to compensate.  If devices on the shared rail need the power, though, then the voltage dip can cause problems with the devices on that rail and system instability (BSOD, etc.) can result.  When all of your rails are powered seperately, though, all you have to consider is buying the psu that supplies the maximum you anticipate needing for each rail (with some headroom of course)  and you eliminate the shared-rail power dip (a fairly common, often misdiagnosed problem) as a potential problem in your system.
No question PCP&C makes the best psu's money can buy, but I opted for the Antec True-Power 550 True Control instead simply because I can buy two TP550's for the price of one equivalent PCP&C cpu, and the TP 550 offers a few bells and whistles not offered by PCP&C (such as the intake fan which helps cool the TP 550's innards and improves its efficiency.)  All psu's lose efficiency the higher their internal temps go, but of them all the PCP&C psus are the least affected by efficiency loss generated by rising operating temperatures--which is probably why they don't need a separate intake cooling fan like the TP 550.  But the TP 550 has the intake fan nonetheless and is 1/2 the price of the PCP&C psu, and if memory serves the Antec fans are a good deal more quiet than the single fan used by PCP&C.  So it's just a matter of studying the specs and the prices and choosing the one you want.  But I'd constrain myself to these two brands because neither shares voltage rails internally.
