Maverick won't talk to APC UPS

I have 2 different APC UPS systems, ever since updating to Maverick my mac mini won't talk to eigther one! Help please, they keep my server safe and I need it to shutdown automatically to prevent data damages.

Must be APC related because no issue using my Cyberpower UPS with Mavericks or ML.

    New iMac.
Mavericks won't recognize Power Inspired VIS1000B ups - 'UPS' option does not appear in Energy Saver preferences pane.
Tried calling Apple support, no knowledge available .....

How about just contact support at the UPS manufacturer - http://www.powerinspired.com/vis1000b-1kva-sine-wave-ups-system-p-1781.html
They claim to provide software for that model for Windows, Unix, Linux and OS X, so it may be an instance where you actually need to use their tools instead of the default OS X facilities.

  • Apc ups mavericks

My APC UPS (Back-ups ES750) has given problems since upgrading to Mavericks. My original battery registered in high percentages. After switching, the menu bar power indicator finally declined to less than 10%. I bought an APC replacement battery. It immediately charged to 100%, but the charge has been declining since. After about 10 days, it shows 35%. Is this a known problem with Mavericks' Power control software, or is this more likely a problem with APC?

Run the USB cable from the UPS to a free USB port on the computer. It should be seen in Energy Saver preferences. No special software is required.

  • APC UPS won't auto shutdown

I am using an Intel 2Ghz Intel Duo iMac with 10.5.2 and recently purchased an APC UPS Back-UPS ES 350.
The Energy Saver control panel recognizes this device and all seems to work well - however - no matter what I do I can't seem to get it to do an auto shutdown when I remove external power.
I have tried all combinations of settings - even tried the power chute software (then uninstalled). No luck. The thing just sails along until power is all out.
Anyone else having similar problems or know of solutions. I can't seem to find anyone with similar problems.

    Hey Matt,
I have the same issue, APC Back-ups 1300 with PowerChute installed. It is recognizes and knows the UPS has swtiched to backup power but never triggers the configured auto shutdown. I've tried both the standard UPS config and the PowerChute config.
I had to get a updated version of PowerChute that "worked" with the Intel processor, made no difference.
    Any luck yet?

  • APC UPS Not Recognized by Mac Pro / Yosemite

Following an upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite, the Energy Saver Preferences Panel no longer recognizes my UPS (APC Back-UPS BR 1500G).  Additionally, the apcagent client v3.14.12 says the UPS is "unknown", returning a status of "network error".  Prior to the system upgrade, it worked nominally.
I performed the following trouble-shooting steps:
    1) after running About This Mac | System Report... the UPS does show up in the System Report, under Hardware | USB:  Back-UPS BR1500G FW:865.L2 .D USB FW:L2:
         - this exonerates the Mac Pro hardware as the cause of the problem
    2) changed the USB port receiving the cable from the UPS.  result: no change
    3) uninstalled/reinstalled agcagent.  result: no change
    4) performed a port scan using Network Utility.  It did not report port 3551 on localhost as open (should it?)
    5) deleted the Energy Saver preference files com.apple.PowerManagement.plist, com.apple.AutoWake.plist.  result: no change
    6) unplugged and turned off UPS, waited three minutes, replugged it and booted up.  result: no change
    7) unplugged USB cable for UPS from my Mac Pro, and plugged it into my PowerBook G4. result: Energy Saver preference pane properly reports the APC UPS
         - this exonerates the UPS and the USB cable as the cause of the problem
So short of doing a clean re-install of Yosemite, I am out of ideas.  I would appreciate some help!
    http://apcupsd-ups-control-software.10985.n7.nabble.com/Yosemite-apcagent-td8675 .html

APC's software was not installed.  That said, I uninstalled apcagent and rebooted.  Results were the same: Energy Saver doesn't detect the UPS.
An earlier thread on this topic hints that this may very well be a Yosemite software bug:  Yosemite doesn't detect my UPS
A user reports that a clean reinstall of Yosemite did not fix their problem.

  • APC UPS (uninterruptible power supply) not restarting after power restored

I just bought an APC UPS 1500VA Smart-UPS (model SUA1500) to protect:
-- iMac 20" 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB memory and 500GB internal disk
-- (2) external Seagate FreeAgent Pro 750GB USB drives
-- (1) external MacGurus Burly Firewire enclosure with (4) 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 drives
    -- DSL modem
    -- Ethernet hub
-- Airport Express (b/g-model, not the new n model)
The UPS is connected to my Mac via USB cable. The UPS shows up in System Profiler as "Smart-UPS 1500 FW:601.3.D USB FW:8.1". It also appears in System Preference Energy Saver pane.
I have configured the Energy Saver preferences pane to shut down the computer when 75% of the UPS battery remains. And to restart after power failure (both on power adapter and on UPS).
So I cut the power to the UPS and the computer properly shuts down when the battery reaches 75%. A couple of minutes later, the UPS turns itself off. All good so far.
PROBLEM 1: When utility power is restored, the UPS does not restart. APC's documentation says it should. Is the Mac sending some sort of shut-down command to the UPS over the USB cable that is preventing the USB from restarting?
PROBLEM 2: After I manually start the UPS (by turning it on after utility power is restored), the Mac ignores its setting to "automatically restart after power failure." I want the machine to restart itself because it is my backup server, music server, and provides file sharing access for other computers on my home-office network.
Anyone else having trouble getting their UPS or Mac to restart after a power failure? Any thoughts? Any configuration settings I'm not getting right?
    Many thanks.

The "Restart automatically after a power failure" option only restarts if the computer was running when power failed. Since you had it shutdown before the power failed, it's not going to restart. Maybe Mac servers, or the server version of OSX, have more options.
Instead of shutting down when the UPS battery is almost dead, you could just stop all the applications that write to disk, so there won't be any disk operations in progress, then wait for the power to fail. It will then restart when the power come back. You should have something running to monitor the UPS, in case power returns, and the UPS doesn't shut off its output. In that case you should have it restart your applications.

  • HT4623 Updated iTunes to latest version, updated iPhone to iOS 7 and now my phone won't work at all.  Won't connect to my WiFi, and won't talk to iTunes . . . Now what do I do?

I now have a useless $700 phone.  Updated iTunes to latest version (and can't get it to revert back to an earlier version), updated iPhone (iPhone5) to iOS 7 and now it won't talk to iTunes, nor will it connect to my WiFi.  What should I try now?

If it won't talk at all to iTunes, you can hold down the power and home button for 10 seconds, it will power off, this is ok, then let go of the power button while holding the home button until iTunes sees it as a device in recovery mode.  You can try to reinstall iOS7 and then restore.

  • Maverick won't permit syncing Address Book or Calendar by USB to iPhone or iPad and permits only syncing by iCloud, which I don't want to use.  Any ideas on how to sync without using iCloud?

Maverick won't permit syncing Address Book or Calendar by USB cable from my MacBook Air to my iPhone and iPad and permits  syncing only by iCloud.  Mountain Lion permitted this via the Info tab on iTunes.  I don't want to use iCloud.  Any ideas with Maverick on how to sync Address Book and Calendar from computer to iPhone and iPad without using iCloud?

ymcneil - thanks for the work around. But isn't it amazing Apple forces us to do this to maintain our privacy.
I live in Australia where there are good privacy laws protecting  citizens. I do not want to be forced to use iCloud when the data sits in  the USA with weaker privacy laws and also able to be seen by the US  Government under the Patriot Act. Further I suspect Apple will  interrogate my contacts and calendar for commercial purposes and I do  not want that either.
I  chose to synch my calendar and contacts with my iphone and ipad. I have  relied for years on carrying around my phone with my diary on it. I can  no longer do that.
Whoever  made this decision at Apple has to be someone who knows little about  the world. I can actually see EU regulators getting very annoyed by  this.
I too woud like the itunes mac to iphone/ipad local backup given back.
In the meantime - thanks for the work around

Tried a number of "fixes" from blogs.  No joy.  Deleted all my adobe apps, rebooted, and Creative Cloud says it needs to reload.  Went through that process, and it quit near the end, saying it needed to reload and directed me back to same Adobe site.  Hmm.  Round and round we go.  How do I get off of this loop and get my Adobe Lightroom and PS working fine again?  Whole episode started after loading CC and then PS said it didn't have Camera Raw.  Went and downloaded that, wouldn't load and said I needed Adobe Download Diagnostic (or something like that) went to suggested link, whereupon it tells me it is no loger available.
Looking forward to cleaning everything off and starting over!!  Any input gratefully accepted and I will NOT be trying CC again.  I am sure it is just fine, just not for me, now.

  • Mavericks won't install on newest mac mini fusion drive

I have a mac mini, latest version.  I have a fusion drive.
Mavericks won't install on that drive.  I get this message:
This disk doesn't use the GUID Partition Table scheme. Use Disk Utility to change the partition scheme. Select the Disk, choose the
partition tab, select the volume Scheme and then click Options.
Well, I did that, up to "choose the partition tab."  Then it says "you may only split this partition into two. To do this, click +."
I did that, and there were two partitions.  the only option left is to select apply, which I didn't.
The "options" were still greyed out.
    So now what?
    Thanks for any input.

Lion creates a recovery area with a minimal version of OS X and it may be unable to do so due to use over the years, and possibly other resizing operations (Boot Camp).  It could just need more space, if you only have less than 8gb free.  Lion shuffles and merges the two systems when it upgrades.  You can burn the image downloaded from App Store by finding the dmg file inside the "Install Mac OS X Lion.app" bundle, dragging it into disk utility, then burning from there.
Otherwise, you can appropriate a MBR/BIOS formatted 4GB thumbdrive, 8GB of either EFI or MBR/BIOS thumbdrive, flash storage device, or external hard drive, and format it, using the restore operation through disk utility to copy the contents of the installer disk to the media.  Exposed via the alt key before the Apple logo, should show the bootable media, where you can format over the former installation.
As always, backup your files when upgrading.  I recommend if your installion is over a year old to wipe and upgrade if you can't make otherwise the media bootable, using your 10.6 recovery dvd.
If you cannot find an external medium to backup your files before the upgrade, if you need to format via disk utility (Through 10.6 media), you can consider Dropbox as an option (2GB free account).
It's not uncommon for the partition to simply refuse operations, including upgrades and resizing.

  • APC UPS, Mountain Lion, and system restart problem

I have a Mac Pro (3,1) and it's been running Lion (10.7.x) for a long time. It's connected to an APC UPS XS 1500 via a USB cable for years. I've never had any problems with it.
Two weeks ago I updated to Mountain Lion (10.8.2). Since then I've returned to my machine to find that it had rebooted itself. After logging in, the system tells me that there was a problem and asks if I want to send the error report to Apple.
Yesterday, I tried unplugging the Mac Pro from the UPS, plugging it directly into a wall outlet, and disconnecting the USB-UPS cable. So far, I've had no problem with system restarts.
Has anyone had a similar problem? If so, did you solve it? How?
    Thank you.

Hi, macjack. Thanks for your response.
So far, with the MP plugged directly into a wall outlet I've had no system initiated reboots or shut-downs.
I looked in the console log and there's so much stuff in there, I'm simply lost. Are there one or two keywords I should search for that might help in debugging the problem?
    Again, thanks.
