  • Noise Ninja for Aperture has been released

from the picture code site ...
+PictureCode today released a plug-in version of Noise Ninja for Apple's Aperture photo editing and management software. The plug-in allows Aperture users to employ best-of-breed noise reduction without leaving the Aperture workflow. The official release is available on the download page.+
    http://picturecode.com/news.htm#MacIntel
    http://picturecode.com/nn_aperture.htm

with regard to your PS profiles, they will work here ...
+Noise Ninja includes an automatic profile loader that attempts to select the best matching saved noise profile when you open an image. The automatic profile loader looks for a saved profile that matches the camera model, ISO setting, and image type of each image opened in Noise Ninja. The automatic profile loader looks in two folders when searching for a matching profile. It looks in the main profiles folder that is located under Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support > Noise Ninja for Aperture > Profiles. It also looks in the secondary per user profiles folder under Macintosh HD > Users > Username > Library > Application Support > Noise Ninja for Aperture > Profiles. The automatic profile loader looks at the camera model, ISO setting, and image type encoded into each profile's filename until it finds one that matches the image. If any of this information is missing in the image or in the profile's filename then a match cannot be made. If a match is not found then the automatic profile loader does not select a profile and Noise Ninja runs the automatic profiler to create a new profile from the image itself. You can manually select any saved profile by selecting Choose profile... from the Profile drop-down.+
you just need to create the folder and drop them in it ... then auto load will work ...

  • Aperture 1.5+ media coverage/reviews

Has anyone else been struck by the lack of media coverage/reviews of Aperture after the 1.5 release?
Seems to me that a lot of criticism raised by reviewers concerning Aperture 1.0 and 1.1 were dealt with in 1.5 and subsequent releases (ability to reference, rather than manage, files being the biggest), but the reviewers who raised those criticisms have not done followup reviews. I'm not surprised that critics such as Michael Reichmann have not re-visited Aperture, since they have turned up as Adobe selected Lightroom alpha and beta testers. But, even Ben Long only did a "First Look" on 1.5 on the creativepro site, and never followed up with the promised full review.
On a related note, Lightroom is the subject of a number of dedicated websites with video "how-to's" etc., but O'Reilly's "Inside Aperture" and Bagelturf are the only ones I know of for Aperture.
    PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Let's be realistic, Aperture can only be used on a Mac and that's only 5 % of the market. Adobe had about 500,000 customers download their beta and a total of over 1,000,000 downloads. Photoshop is the 800 pound gorilla. Aperture is a wonderful product, but what Adobe does to answer the competition Aperture has created, will get much more press. Besides, NAPP and other organizations are built in Adobe advertisers and some base their livelihood on Adobe's new products and the need for quality training. Aperture will help sell more Macs and stands up quite well against Lightroom, but Lightroom's father is the 800 pound gorilla.

  • Just updated and: aperture can't update library

just updated from Ap 2 to 3 and got the following error message:  The library in “/Users/name/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary” cannot be upgraded.
    Any ideas?

The library in “/Users/name/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary” cannot be upgraded
Is that the full error message you get? Are there any additional messages in the Console window? Any crash logs?
Backup your Aperture 2 library, if you have not done so and rename it from the default name, so that Aperture 3 will not overwrite it, by accidentally creating a new library.
Your Aperture 2 library may have a corruption. To repair this, try to repair the permissions and rebuild the library with the "Aperture library First Aid Tools". This would best be done with Aperture 2, if you have saved your Aperture 2 application, see the "Release Notes" (at the bottom of the page, additional information).
If you no longer have Aperture 2, try the repair with Aperture 3:
Hold down the option-command-key combination⌥⌘, while you double click your Aperture library.
Then select  "repair permissions" from the First Aid panel, followed by a "Rebuild Library".

  • Applescript to open different Aperture library

    Hi,
I got tired of using the prefs in Aperture to set which library to open so I wrote this little applescript. Just drop an Aperture library file on this applet and it will set the prefs in Aperture to open that file, and then open Aperture.
The script is released into the public domain.
To compile the script, copy it and paste it into a new AppleScipt. Save the script as an application and you are good to go.
I keep it in my dock to launch Aperture. If no LIbrary is dropped on it, it just open Aperture.
    Hope someone finds this useful.

set appIsRunning to process pAppName exists
    return appIsRunning
    end tell
    end isAppRunning
    ---- end cut here ----

Very cool! I almost went and wrote an applescript to do this in the last few days but didn't get around to it. Too lazy to figure out what the defaults write should be.
This almost guarantees that apple will announce a new version of aperture in the next couple of days that handles multiple libraries gracefully!

  • Upgrading to Aperture 3 on Mac Book Pro

When I try to open Aperture after upgrading to 3 I get the following error "Insufficient Disk Space"
"There is not enough free space on your Aperture Library Volume"
I have 28 GB available HD space left. Can anybody advise on how much space I need to open 3?
    Thank you

    Hi Ngiri
I don't think the issue is directly with Aperture itself. Instead, since you've just performed the upgrade to v3, the process is that of the once-only upgrade of your Aperture library file. Aperture v3 uses a newer file format than earlier versions.
How big is your Aperture library file? If you're unsure of where to find the answer, the file itself is most likely located at the top level of your Pictures folder. ie /Users/ngiri/Pictures/Aperture Library (If it's not there, you've relocated it elsewhere, so you probably don't need me telling you where that is... )
There's info about the upgrade process in the final section of the [Aperture v3.0.3 Release notes|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2518]: 'A note on upgrading your Aperture library'.
Aperture temporarily uses extra space on your hard drive during the upgrade process. This is for the purpose of backing up critical library info and insuring the integrity of your data during upgrade. If you don't have adequate space on your hard drive to accommodate the upgrade, Aperture will display a warning dialog. You may need to move your library to a different hard drive with more space in order to upgrade it, and then move it back to the original drive when the upgrade is complete. Any space used by Aperture during the upgrade is released and made available to you again once the upgrade has finished.
    Hope this helps...
    Regards,
    Gary

  • Aperture 2 and Lens Model

Is there a way to have Aperture 2 (after import of 1.5.x Library) go back to the original files and populate the new Lens Model field?
    Thanks,
    Michael

I appreciate the help but I'm more confused. I don't see it in the metadata panel for EXIF Expanded or Photo EXIF (the only two EXIF choices I see). I don't see any checkbox for hiding empty in either the panel, preferences, or menus. When I use EXIF Expanded I do see some empty fields but there's no field that says anything like or has any information the info like lens model.
Boy, I'm really baffled by this. I've been using Aperture since it was first released so I'm not exactly new to this. I can find this info easily in Lightroom but I can't find it anywhere in Aperture 2.

  • Aperture 2.x install on Snow Leopard

Having used Aperture since it was first released and later upgrading to 2.0 via Apple Store download process, I do not have a full 2.x installation CD. That wasn't a problem on my old G5 machine... and it probably wasn't a problem before Aperture 3.0 came out; however, it is a problem now.
Aperture 2.0 (trial) installed ok, but won't even start on Snow Leopard.
Aperture 2.1.4 upgrade won't install because it apparently cannot find 2.0 installed - even though Aperture is in /Applications (and hasn't been renamed).
Aperture 2.1.4 full version is no longer available for download since Aperture 3.x came out.
How do I get Aperture 2.x onto my new MacBook Pro?

I have Aperture 3 on my new Snow Leopard iMac, and Aperture 2.1.4, that used to run on my Power Mac G5, also runs on the new iMac . If you have Aperture 2.1.4 running on your G5, the app is Universal and should run on your new Intel-based machine after you move the application over from your other machine. How did you migrate things from your G5 to your new Macbook Pro? I did re-install all my programs from original CDs and DVDs just to be safe, but any universal app should still come over via Migration Assistant and Time Machine.

  • Aperture locating files

How can I get a file back where the original that I imported to aperture has just disappeared. I can't locate it and I can't export it at all but can still see the thumbnail and metadata? Any idea

    Hanna,
It's quite unusual for the files to go missings from within the Aperture library. So it would be useful to confirm the files really are missing, and if so, also see if we can locate where they have gone to.
I have recreated the issue on my system so I can talk you through the steps.
What I did, was to move my original file from the Aperture library to my desktop. So in Aperture, it now sees the file is missing:
On the info tab, choose 'File Info' to see the file name. Make a note of this or copy it to the clipboard.
Next, we're going to use Terminal to try to find the file, first by looking in the Aperture Library, and if we don't find it there, by searching your whole system.
The Terminal App is located in you Applications/Utilities folder:
Launch Terminal and put it side by side with a Finder window where you can see your Aperture Library.
We're going to change Terminals current directory so it is looking in you Aperture Library. To do this, in Terminal, type cd followed by a space. Then drag your Aperture Library into terminal and release it. This will copy the full path to your Aperture Library into the command line. Press return to execute the cd command.
Note: Take care when dragging your Library to Terminal, only release it in the Terminal App otherwise you could end up actually moving your Library somewhere. If you are uncomfortable with this, you can simply type the name of the full path to your library instead. The drag from finder is just a short cut to save you having to type the full path name:
Here's what it looks like while dragging:
And here's what it looks like when you have dragged the path and pressed return:
So now we have Terminal with it's current directory set to your Aperture Library. Now we'll use the Find command to see if the image is hiding anywhere within it.
My missing file is called _C061525.JPG so the find command to look for it is as follows:
    find . -iname "_C061525.JPG"
Note the dot which tells it to start searching from the current directory.
If it finds the file it will show the path to where it found it. If it doesn't find it the command finishes and doesn't show you anything. In my case, it wont find_C061525.JPG. To show you what it looks like when it does find it, I also did a find for file _C061524.JPG which does exist. Here's what you see in Terminal in each case:
Using find like this, will look everywhere in your Library and hopefully you will locate your images. However, if find doesn't find it, then the images really have gone from the Library so the next step is to see if they have been moved somewhere else on your system.
You could use spotlight for this, but as we have the terminal open, I'll show you the find command we can use to look for it. Find is also a bit more thorough and reliable than Spotlight. But it will take a lot longer to run as it searches your entire system.
The command for my file looks like this:
    find / -iname "_C061525.JPG" 2>/dev/null
Note the / in place of the dot, this tells it search your whole system. Also the 2>/dev/null at the end, this just stops your screen from filling up with warnings about permissions. Depending on the size and speed of your hard drive, this make take quite a long time to run, just leave it until it completes.
Here's what the output looks like, and you can see it successfully found the file on my desktop where I had moved it to:
If after this, you still haven't located the files, then it looks like they've really gone. You should check your system trash to see if they are in there, and if you find them you can drag them out of trash. But failing that, you will need to use your backup to locate and recover the files. If you don't have a backup, your last hope is a file recovery utility that will search for deleted files on your hard drive but these can be expensive and time consuming. Having said that, my neice just recently lost her school photo project and managed to recover them with Data Rescue 3. Saved her butt as she is the teacher!
    Hope this helps,
    Andy

  • Several questions about Icloud, Icloud Photos, IOS8, Photostream and Photos OSX (If it ever happens)

I wasn't sure whether to put these questions in Aperture or Icloud but since the main questions seem to do mostly with how Icloud is currently working with Aperture (until Photos OSX is released - if that ever happens) I opted for Icloud. It's a bit convoluted, so any input is appreciated! I've tried to be concise:
    Device/software overview:
    Iphone 6+ with IOS8 x 2
    Ipad Air 2 with IOS8 x 2
    Macbook Pro running Yosemite
    Imac running Yosemite
Three icloud accounts plus family share is set up.
Main account for itunes app store purchases
    My account
    My partners account
    Situation overview:
We are new to icloud and IOS (but not mac and Aperture). We previously had Android phones and tablets. Both my partner and I take a ton of photos on each of our respective devices (we run a food blog). Icloud and switching to IOS devices (iphone and ipad) was meant to simplify our lives but we are running into some snags using Aperture until Photos OSX is released--And I dread the thought if OSX Photos doesn't make this simpler in the long run! Right now we are just trying to get our very large (separate) aperture libraries organized and ready for when the update happens. In doing so we have run across some questions:
Right now, in addition to photo stream, Aperture creates a monthly file that is a permanent upload of photos from Icloud. Is Aperture supposed to upload the videos from Icloud as well? I just realized NONE of my videos have uploaded from Icloud. If they are supposed to be importing automatically, what troubleshooting do I need to perform to make this work properly?
If the videos are not uploading, should we just do a manual import of the videos into Aperture? And, I assume that will NOT also bring in duplicate photos as we have that box checked in IMPORT.
Must I leave photos/videos I DO NOT want in the Aperture TRASH in order for the imports to NOT import previously imported/duplicate files? It seems if you empty the trash, how will Aperture know that those were previously imported? This makes the trash huge, however!
Is there a way/is it possible to AUTOMATICALLY have icloud/photo stream import from two (or more) phones/ipads (with two different icloud accounts) into ONE aperture library on ONE machine? In other words, if I want my phone and my partner's phone to upload photos into my food blog Aperture library without having to do a manual upload all the time, how do I make this happen? The need for constant manual uploads will start to become quite a pain!
How do I share A single project with another Aperture Library?
Is there a better way to share an Aperture Library between computers/devices than through an external drive--Given that the Ipad, which I blog with on the road, will not connect to an external drive, we are finding this practice very limiting!
    IOS8/Icloud Photos Questions:
I assume that when Photos OSX is released there may be a way to accomplish this (I hope so anyway) but follow me here - My icloud storage can be up to 1 TB but my devices only have 128GB each. Even with "reduce photo size" on my devices turned on, I am going to fill up my phone/ipad in no time! (I only got my iphone in Nov and only have 60G left - Did I mention I take a ton of pictures!?!) There has GOT to be a way to have ALL photos stored on Icloud but only some on your phone!?!  HELP!
Within a SHARED FAMILY album, is there a way to create new SUB albums? It seems crazy that I can't organize the photos within that album to create categories like: home, vacation, etc. and shouldn't have to create a new SHARED (non-family) album for each one.
Does anyone know when PhotosOSX will be released and is there any new information as to it's features?
Note to Developers just in case you're reading this: I hope OSX Photos solves every question I have above (and that it still allows for watermarking of photos on export)!
Thanks to all and anyone who can help with these issues!

    Lots and lots of questions
The new Photos app in OS X should address much of this - it greatly simplifies syncing stuff across machines. Apple has details on it up here:
    https://www.apple.com/osx/photos-preview/
It says "coming this spring" and a pre-release version has already been made available to developer testers.

  • "Unsupported Image Format" all of a sudden, with previously workable files

    Folks,
I've got an issue that seems very strange indeed.
Months ago, I bought a Pentax K20D. I also bought a 17" MacBook Pro and Aperture. Camera and Aperture played well together.
I encountered the known issue with white spots on the image when using the 2-second timer for long exposures. I read about how the Pentax firmware update 1.01 changed the EXIF Make information, causing Aperture to be unable to read the K20D PEF RAWs. So I waited.
When Aperture 2.1.1 was released (and I think the Apple RAW update), I installed both of those. When I heard through this forum that the updates fixed the problem, I also updated my camera's firmware and confirmed that it worked.
So smooth sailing for a few months on Aperture 2.1.1, OS 10.5.3 (or .4, I forget), and K20D firmware 1.01.
Then I bought a Mac Pro 8-Core with 10.5.4 on it. I sold the 17" MacBook Pro. I used the Migration Wizard to move my user account from one machine to the other, but did a fresh install of all applications. (I've been an Apple tech for the past 7 years, and have various certifications. I know the user transfer process isn't perfect, but it should have the following results... read on)
Now, in Aperture 2.1.1 on 10.5.4 with all updates, PEF RAWs taken with K20D firmware 1.01 that were previously edited, manipulated, etc just fine on my MacBook Pro say "Unsupported Image Format" in a big reddish-black box when I try to view the master. If I switch to Quick Preview, it displays just fine, but is un-adjustable. Additionally, any NEW images I copy from my K20D show in the Import window as being 0x0 pixels (or occasionally 160x120 pixels) and will only show a tiny preview or "Unsupported Image Format." All PEF RAWs taken with K20D firmware 1.0 are just fine.
    So here's what I've done:
    1) Tested a fresh install of 10.5.4 on another HD in the Mac Pro. Installed Aperture 2.1, updated to 2.1.1. This should be perfectly clean. It gives the "Unsupported Image Format" error with any new images from my K20D. Copying the library from my other partition gives the same problems as described earlier.
    2) Tested a fresh install of 10.5.3 on another partition in a Macbook Pro. Installed Aperture 2.1, updated to 2.1.1. Applied the Apple RAW update and iLife enhancements. It gives the same errors as before.
    3) Tested a fresh install of 10.4.11 on another partition in a Macbook Pro. Installed Aperture 2.1, updated to 2.1.1. This worked perfectly for all PEFs and DNGs.
    4) Took a month-old backup (from when everything was working just fine) of my Aperture Library and loaded it into all of the above configurations. Same results!
So what is the deal here? Aperture all of a sudden can't read images that it itself was able to edit a month ago? How come it works just fine in 10.4.11? This seems really messy. I have essentially lost a lot of the work I've put in.
I can use DNGs moving forward, but my past work is now messed up, and the DNGs are almost 75% bigger than the PEFs!
Anyone have any ideas for resolution or should I just call Apple?
    Message was edited by: MonsieurBon

If it's any consolation, I had the EXACT same problem today; just opened Aperture 2 and my entire library of images shows "unsupported image format' -- the thumbnails are still intact but clicking on any image suddenly shows the red screen.
Same situation, these images were previously editable and accessible. We had a power outage an hour ago and initially I thought my library had crashed, but I was not actually using Aperture 2 at the time of the outage so I don't think that's the case.
Given the relatively sparse attention Apple gives to these forums, I don't expect there will be a quick response.
I have Leopard 10.5.4 installed, I don't have access to another version of the OS to see if I can get it work. If I'm not mistaken, wasn't there a series of Software Updates recently? I click on these without really checking the apps that are affected; could Aperture have been one of the apps 'revised' by the recent update?

  • Meaningful Slideshow module update, please - Ken Burns effect

Just upgraded to LR 5 from LR 3.  I'm floored that there still has never been any sort of meaningful update to the slideshow module.
Assume you want to make a slideshow for a funeral.  (That's probably what most people actually do with slideshows anyway).
As it is now, if I want any sort of decent slideshow, I have to do it one photo at a time, in Premiere.
I would like to see some simple automated animations - such as the Ken Burns effect, directly in LR.
My understanding is that this functionality that has been in Aperture for the last few releases.  I'm unclear why Adobe would not make at least similar functionality, let alone better.

  • Getting this Error: There was an error opening the database for the library

I keep getting an error with start up (There was an error opening the database for the library). The command + option - double click does not provide options for database rebuild or repair, just the same error message.
I have been using Aperture 3 since it was released without problems until now. The library size is about 450GB.
Has anyone found a file or something within the library that was corrupt? Or any manual method to fix the issue?

I have had the same problem as you have had, but I managed to restore. After having upgraded to 3.1, Aperture performed a irreversible update of the library. I then made a backup to a vault (which also was was updated). So far so good. A few days later when opening Aperture I got again the dialoge box saying Aperture had to update the library to 3.1 - and then came the error message. When trying to open the backup vault directly, I got the same message.
What I did was opening another library (creating a new one will also do). Aperture was now in a state where it was running with a few pictures in the library. I then performed a vault restore from the 3.1 backup. Fortunately, this did the job.
I actually taught that both the library and the vault was corrupted, and I am really happy that I managed to restore. Tomorrow I am going out to buy several new hard disks for my new multiple vault backup strategy to cope with the new threat: Aperture library self-corruption.

  • Panasonic Gh4 Raw file support

Any idea as to when the Panasonic Gh4 Raw Files will be supported in Aperture.

No, Apple does not release this kind of information in advance.
There are three to four raw support releases per year, so it may take a few month, until you will be seeing support for that camera. The 4K video may be an added complication.
    G5, Mac OS X (10.4.8)
You'll have to upgrade to Mavericks and Aperture 3.5.1, to be able to profit from new raw support.

  • IPhoto book import/templates

I upgraded to Aperture 3 when it was released and upgraded to Snow Leopard at the same time. I now need to reprint a book I created in iPhoto 08 and have just realized this wasn't imported to Aperture.
In reading the discussion groups it appears that Aperture doesn't import the books and also doesn't have the same templates available nor can it import the iPhoto template.
If anyone from Apple is monitoring this discussion, how about addressing this by enabling Aperture to import books that took a huge amount of effort to create!
Who ever made the decision not to support this feature should be fired! I know I'm not the only person migrating to Aperture 3 and I'm sure this is something you would like more users to do. Therefore, Aperture 3 should be a superset of features, at least when it comes to these commonly used capabilities.
If I had known in advance, there is no way I would have migrated.

Sean, am having same problem, and am hoping that someone out there may have discovered a work-around? I haven't deleted iPhoto pix yet, so could still export them to Aperture if this is possible, although am starting to think it's not.
If someone else is thinking of migrating, it may be useful to migrate, but store originals in iPhoto library (there's an option to keep them there when you import iPhoto library into Aperture). Then you'll still have access to them and won't double your photo memory space. And if you need to go back and reprint a book it'll be there.
All future photo adds will be in your aperture library. Unfortunately this isnt' ideal, but until they allow us to "import a book" from iPhoto, it's the only way to keep that option to print again. This also applies to calendars/cards/etc. as far as I can tell...
