Aperture folders and projects

After importing my photos from Aperture to Photos, my file and project structure is missing. How do I recover this? can I recover this? Thanks.

All metadata is Image-specific.  The Image "owns" its metadata; wherever the Image is, its metadata is there with it.
There is no default template or auto-organization feature in Aperture.  How you organize your Image collection (using Projects, Folders, and Albums) is entirely up to you.
Re-organizing can be fairly efficiently done.  Create two new top-level Folders, named something like "Old Organization" and "NEW ORGANIZATION!".  After designing the Library structure that best meets your needs, slowly and methodically move Images and containers from the containers in the "Old" Folder to the newly-created containers in the "NEW" Folder.  When you are done, you should have no Images left in the "Old" Folder.  Delete it.
Above, Frank refers to "Split View".  I'm fairly certain he actually means one of the views showing multiple Browsers.  I suggest doing this.  Note, however, that you cannot drag from Browser to Browser (at least in 3.4.5).  Your "drop target" must be an item on the Library Inspector.  And don't forget List View, which is also usually helpful when creating a Library structure.
Of course, you should never use any computer file without having a backup.
Additionally, I suggest running "Repair Database" before you start, and after you finish.
For a concise overview of the parts of Aperture and how they relate, have a look here.
I have additional comments regarding Library structure here.

  • Faces didn't inventory all the folders and projects

So I had Faces turned off for many months to improve performance.  In the meantime, I imported about 10,000+ images into a variety of folders, etc.  I then turned on Faces because I thought it would be fun to play with 70 years of different pictures.  Faces seems to have "captured" about half of the new images (all referenced images), but there are entire folders and projects that it didn't get to.  And when I click on "Faces" and those folders, it just doesn't find any faces.  Does anyone have a clue about how to remedy this?  (I've repaired permission and the database, etc.)  Thank you.

What happens if you select all the Images in one of the under-cooked Projects and run "Photos→Detect Missing Faces"?
If this helps for a Project, try it on several or all.  It may tie up your computer, but it won't damage your Library in any way.
If it does nothing, post back.
Filter using the Rule "Face" set to "is detected" to determine if "Detect Missing Faces" made any difference.
Also confirm that Aperture is done processing by checking the Activity window, and, just for voodoo, restart your computer and Aperture and let it run awake and unmolested overnight.

  • Some Aperture photos and projects missing from iLife Media Browser

Good evening - having a little bit of trouble getting Aperture to work smoothly with my iLife media browser (i.e., inserting photos into Mail, Pages, Keynote, etc).
I currently have 5699 photos and 131 projects in Aperture. But the iLife Media Browser only shows me 5131 photos and 130 projects; when clicking on individual projects in the browser, anywhere from 3 to 70 photos per project are missing. Tried repairing permissions, repairing the database, and rebuilding the database - this improved the issue, but didn't completely resolve it as 5679 photos now show in the Media Browser, and 20 remain missing. Also tried deleting, and generating previews for all my photos in the library. No change.
My library is mostly referenced, with a few photos managed.
Obviously in the grand scheme of things 20 photos missing in the Media Browser not that big a deal. But wanting to get to the root cause though because without solving this issue, I'm concerned about a larger underlying problem that may only get worse as my library grows.
Has anyone had, or resolved a problem similar to this? And can anyone offer any additional suggestions? Are there any specific files that feed the iLife Media Browser that I can delete and rebuild that may solve this issue?
    thanks,
    Mark

I think I've ironed this out. Several intertwined issues. I took a moment to type out my notes; hopefully it helps you guys solve this quickly if you get a call from someone else on this down the line.
[1] original problem of several hundred items missing in Media Browser: probably an issue of previews not being built. Mostly fixed when I regenerated previews for my library, but repairing permissions and repairing the database may have helped too.
[2] Residual problem of 20 items still missing (5698 items displayed in Aperture when selecting Inspector > Library > Photos; 5677 items displayed in Mail Photo Browser). My issue wasn't as much with 20 missing items in a browser as it was with trying to understand the root cause and whether I had an underlying Aperture, Aperture Library, or OS problem that would bite me later. Turns out several things were causing this problem:
[2a] In Aperture, when you select Inspector > Library > Photos , all your content is displayed: photos, videos, and any audio clips you may have imported (e.g., a recorded audio clip on your camera narrating shoot, location, client, exposure value etc). So even though you've selected "Photos", your "xxx items displayed" count on the bottom of the screen reflects all your imported content. This is not the case in the Media Browser - of which there are two variants in Mac OS:
[2a.1] Mail has a Photo Browser, which behaves much like a "Media Browser Lite: the title bar says "Photo Browser", it only accesses your Aperture and iPhoto Libraries, and only shows photos and video.
[2a.2] iWork applications have a more comprehensive Media Browser, where you can select between Audio, Photos, and Movies. If you select Audio the iWork Media Browser will show any audio files present in your Aperture or iTunes library. If you select Movies, the iWork Media Browser will show any movie clips present in your Aperture or iMovie libraries. Photos behaves the same way as "Photo Browser" in Mail, showing any photos present in your Aperture (or iPhoto if installed) libraries.
Turns out I had three audio clips in my Aperture library. When selecting "Photos" in either the Mail or iWork browsers, the total item count will only show photos and videos - no audio clips. So now 17 missing items remain.
[2b] Stacks - one project contained nine photos grouped into a stack. Only the key photo of a stack is previewed/shown in Media Browser. So a stack of nine photos will only show as one in the browser - unstacking the photo will allow them all to appear. So now nine missing items.
[2c] Seven photographs somehow had broken links to their referenced masters, and needed to be reconnected. Down to two missing items.
[2d] One photo simply wouldn't cooperate - no matter how many times I regenerated the preview, or deleted the preview and then regenerated it, nothing worked. I deleted it from the library and reimported it. One missing item remains.
[2e] Final missing item was a photograph I rejected. Makes sense; as media browser does not display rejects.
Problem solved!! Hopefully this might be of help to somebody in the future.
    cheers,
    Mark

  • Aperture 3.3 "import folders as projects" broken

    Dear all,
I am attempting to "import folders as projects" after upgrading from 3.2 to 3.3, and it breaks EVERYTIME. I am attempting to import from an external USB3 HDD which was formated for mac properly, and checked and rechecked using the disk manager etc. It works fine (and is brand new)
I have repaired permissions, repaired database and rebuilt database with no effect.
Thank you all so much in advance. Greatly appreciated.
I always get the following error message:

    Thank you for your reply,
I can confirm that the images are all ok, and I did break the folder up in to smaller bite size segments, with no luck. It only happens when I try to import "folders as projects" as I have since successfully imported some of these folders the long way (folder by folder).
I tried moving some of the folders to my local HDD, with no luck.
I have turned off "scan for faces" too, with no luck. I will now see what hapens when I get rid of the "generation of previews" and see what happens.
The crash happens almost immediately upon starting the import... I will keep you posted.
    Many thanks

  • Aperture 3 Importing Folders as Projects is taking days to complete

    Hello,
I acquired Aperture 3 a week ago and decided to give it a try. I've been using Lightroom since version 1. All my photos are in NEF (Nikon RAW) format and stored on an External HD. I used the A3 option FILE > IMPORT > FOLDERS AS PROJECTS command and selected folders from year 2008, 2009, 2010...this are 109 folders (13401 photos) from a total of 348 from year 2003 to date, meaning I am importing a fraction of all photos.
A very important note: I use the import option "Store Files: In their current location"...so that A3 is not moving, copying and so on, any files - it's just referencing them.
The problem starts here - it took Aperture 3 almost 24 hours to complete the "import"...i.e. to fill all the Projects with the corresponding photos. But the IMPORT PROCESS continues forever, today is day 4...the Aperture Library on this has grown to 18 GB and still growing. There is small but constant Hard Disk activity between the External HD with the Photos and the internal HD with the Library.
If I try to quit Aperture I get a message box:
+"Do you want to continue importing? Aperture is currently importing files. If you quit, the import task will be canceled and any files that have not been fully imported will be removed. | Quit | Continue |"+
How much longer shall I wait? Is it really importing or is this a bug? Why is there no progress bar or counter to give an estimate or idea of what is going on?
Just as reference: I imported the same folders (109) into Lightroom 3 Beta with the option "Store Files: In their current location" and it took only 1-2 hours.
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Kostadin

    Kostadin,
I'm noticing same thing today. This morning I imported about 100 Canon 7D RAW images from my memory card, which took about 5 minutes upon which I got the "Delete Images and Eject Card?" dialog. I accepted and removed the card.
4 hours later, I still have a "Importing..." spinning ball on Aperture. For the first couple of hours, I was trying to send emails with a few images and it would take 20 minutes for Aperture to generate the JPEG in the email. Now it only takes 10-15 seconds. BUt it is still "importing". So aperture continues to function, but it has some process going which keeps my CPU fans running on the MacBook Pro.
I am anxious to see just how long it takes to IMPORT... after it finishes importing.
What's it doing for this long?
    Jim

  • I've just upgraded Aperture and seem to have lost all the folders and albums. How can I retrieve them?

When I opened Aperture a dialogue box appeared suggesting I upgrade. The upgrade was done, and now all the folders and albums previously in Aperture have disappeared. How can I retrieve them?

When you opened your new Version of Aperture you probably created a new, empty  Aperture Library.
Do you remember where your original Aperture Library is located? Usually it resides in your "Pictures" folder, and is named something.aplibrary. If you do not remember where it is, search with Spotlight for ".aplibrary".
Quit Aperture, if it is running, then select your old Aperture Library and double click it to open it. This will launch Aperture on your correct library, and you should see all your projects and albums again.

  • Unable to import files and folders as project

Recently, my Aperture 3.1.2 didn't allow me to import files stored in an external hard drive, so I put this issue here sometime back and somebody gave me a hint to try to import in a different way i.e. File>Import>Folders As Project and it worked. A couple of weeks later, the above two methods didn't work again. After all I reinstalled Mac OS(downgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.6.4) and reinstalled Aperture version 3.1.1 accordingly. But I still can't import 16bit Tiff image files. (FYI, my SIGMA camera RAW file format X3F is not supported by Aperture 30.). In South Korea, Apple Korea did sell Aperture 3 product to me and provide ZERO service for Aperture 3 users, and they demand to directly contact Apple HQ Aperture support organization via international calls in non-native language. Please help me.

    Hello Mr. Caggiano,
Sorry for late reply due to big time difference. Up until yesterday morning, I was running Aperture 3.1.2 on Mac OS 10.6.8(both are the latest versions.) As my Sigma SD15 camera RAW is not currently supported by Aperture 3, I deveop RAW files, adjust images and save them in Tiff 16bit format using Sigma-provided S/W on the EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. And then I open Aperture 3 and import images from external HD for further image adjustments. This is the way I import files. I click File>Import>Folders As Project, and choose target files among displayed folder system. That is my ordinary workflow. I have had no problems until the following happened.
Yesterday afternoon, I chosed the specific folder to continue the remaining adjustments, but all of the folders including the target folder were all grayed out, and the spinning gear displaying "Loading assests" soon disappeared without showing any image thumbnails. I had no way to click "cancel" button on the buttom of Import Panel. Finally I decided to lower my Mac OS from the latest 10.6.8 to 10.6.4 and also Aperture version from 3.1.2 to 3.1.1. I had to create an another Aperture library to suit 3.1.1 version. And I tested again on the changed environment but the result was the same. Regretfully, going back to old Mac OS have caused Sigma-provided RAW conversion & adjusment S/W to restrict some functionalities such as file conversion and saving. In fact my lowered Mac OS is still higher version than Sigma-published s/w installation requirement. I may have to upgrade Mac OS again to 10.6.7, not the latest because I don't want to be an early adopter of the forth-coming Mac OS Lion. I am very perplexed now.
I tried to describe what happened yesterday as detailed as possible for you to come up with a solution. I look forward to hearing a good news from you.
    Thank you. DK

  • How to sync both from hard drive folders and from Aperture?

I have the following problem. So far I was syncing photos directly from my hard drive folders and everything was fine. Recently I decided to add some photos from Aperture albums. When I did this all previous photos synced from HD were deleted. When I switched back to syncing from folders, the photos from Aperture were deleted. It looks that it is impossible to sync from both sources. Anyone had this problem and found the solution?

I couldn't figure this out on my device, so I just consolidated them into one sync folder by copying photos.
Good thing I have extra disc space.....

  • Folders and topics are inexplicably deleted from my RoboHelp 9 project

A month ago, my company purchased the latest Adobe Technical Communication Suite and I started a new RoboHelp 9 project. To help keep track of my many topics, I created several folders and a few sub-folders in the HTML Files (Topics) folder within the Project Manager pod. The organization of these folders and topics mirrors my TOC. Once I nailed down the basic structure of my help system, I started using the TOC as my “hub” for working on the various topics – meaning that I open a particular topic by double-clicking it in the TOC.
Then something went awry early this week.
Sometimes when I open my project, the folders and sub-folders along with their many topics are missing from the Project Manager pod. The TOC also reflects these missing files with those dreaded red-X topic icons. And in Windows Explorer, no trace of the folders, sub-folders, and topics can be found
On a couple of occasions, I opened my project and most – but not all – of the folders and their accompanying topics were deleted from the Project Manager pod. The only topics that consistently “survive” are the ones that aren’t nested within a folder or sub-folder in the Project Manager’s HTML Files (Topics) folder.
I’ve been able to make some progress on my help system by periodically saving the entire project folder, and then using the latest backup as my starting point whenever this problem occurs. But ultimately I end up losing a fair amount of work.
I rooted around this forum for help and insight. I saw several suggestions concerning a similar problem with RH 8 where the solution was to delete the .xpj and .cpd files and then open the .hhp file. Unfortunately, this fix didn’t work for me.
I’m now working in a state of high anxiety, wondering whether my topic files will exist the next time I open my project. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.
         -Kevin

Yes what Jeff is suggesting is trying a shorter path. Just copy the project from where it is to C:\MyProject and see if that fixes the problem.
As to deleting the CPD every time, some do, some don't. It used to lose some information but things were changed and now it is OK to delete it every time. Do not delete the XPJ file though, that will mess up your project. See Opening Projects on my site.

  • How to get the Folders and subfolders collection in Project Manager

    Hi,
I am trying to get the folders and subfolders collection in Project Manager, so that I will be able to loop through the collection and be able to create a project under the appropriate folder.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Anything you do without submitting to form has to be done on the client side (ususally by JavaScript) using data which has been send already from the server.
With JavaScript you can do quite a bit. You can download tables which don't necessarilly appear on the screen, loading them into JavaScript arrays by dynamically generating javascript. Then you can pick up events like drop-box selection and use these tables to chose what you do next (e.g. preloading other fields, setting drop box content etc.).
Or, you can cause forms to be submitted when actions like a selection happen without the user clicking a button. It's generally a matter of how much data you'd need to transmit.
Another posibility is to use a Java applet, which can generate requests to the server and handle the results as it chooses. That are a number of problems with that but occasionally it's the best solution.
What you can't do is to handle user input inside a JSP. The JSP has come and gone before the user even gets to see your form.

  • Aperture 3 and recovered projects

I'm running Aperture 3 with Mountain Lion on an iMac. I had trouble opening Aperture 3 and went through the Repair Library Database and Repair Permissions routine a number of times. I finally removed Aperture 3 and re-installed it. After upgrading to the newest version, I noticed that I have about (4) recovered projects. When I open them, there is nothing there, but the version name and an arrow with an ! in the lower right hand corner of each of the 151 non existent photos in the project. Can I delete these Recovered Projects?

Deleting the recovered projects will not damage your Aperture Library, but they are an indication, that some images may be missing. In that case the filenames will give you an indication which images you need to restore from your backup.
Before deleting these projects, I would check first, if the images exist in your other projects. Usually there is nothing wrong, if you see "recovered projects"; sometimes files are left in the library package, when you use an external editor, that saves into the Library package, or if Aperture crashes, when writing an image version.

HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO RETRIEVE MY OLD LIBRARY OF PHOTOS, ALBUMS AND PROJECTS SINCE DOWNLOADING AN APERTURE 3 SOFTWARE UPDATE TWO DAYS AGO.  THE NEW LIBRARY ONLY HAS A FEW NEW PHOTOS IN ONE FOLDER
PLEASE ADVISE AS HOW TO RETRIEVE OLD APERTURE LIBRARY WITH ALL MY PHOTOS, ALBUMS AND PROJECTS

Find the old Aperture library in the Finder and double click it to launch Aperture with that library set to the default.
And check your caps look key.  It appears to be stuck.

I moved my FCP events and projects folder onto my external hard drive and now everything is gone on FCP.  When I tried to reload those folders onto FCP nothing happened.  I still get the missing files image.  When I try to import the folders manually something pops up that says it is incompatable.  It is possible to retrieve everything that was lost?

"When I tried to reload those folders onto FCP nothing happened"
Brownale6 how can  u reload folder in to FCP.
As you said folders are moved to external disk but have you checked it should be like this
    For Event
external disk>Final Cut Events>your event folder.
    For project
external disk>Final Cut Projects>your project folder.

  • Exporting of pictures with folders and subfolders from Aperture

I was importing folders with subfolders structure to Aperture 3.
Is possible later export my pictures from structure in Aperture to folders and subfolders with same structure like it was before importing to Aperture?
    Thanks.

I'm assuming you imported using managed files and not referenced files? If referenced (leaving files in place), then your files are in the same folder structure as before.

I tried the first aid tasks but the issue is still there.  I have more info now though.  It's not a problem with merging.
The problem is that new projects are being generated everytime aperture starts (with the same name, ie 01, 02.... and 01 (1), 02 (1) .....)
When aperture start, it shows "importing".  When I click on importing, it goes into the activity box.  In the activity box, has many lines as below.  The added projcts are all empty.  It's annoying because i have many useless projects being generated.
