Aperture + Leopard broke my desktop PrefsPane
OK, so I upgraded my 10.4.10 to 10.5. Everything went fine, and things seemed to be working wonderfully.
However, when I went into my desktop/screensaver prefs my custom folders were gone, and my desktop immediately changed to the apple default backgrounds. Now, the only categories displayed are +Apple, +Aperture Projects, and +Aperture projects. (Yes, Aperture projects is displayed twice.) When I try to add the folder again, I get an error telling me that it is already added. Even though I can't see it. So, I trashed the com.apple.desktop prefs, and one of the +Aperture Projects categories disappeared, but when I tried to add the custom folder again the second +Aperture Projects category came back, and the same problem started all over again.
If I restore an old version of my com.apple.desktop prefs (Thank you Time Machine!), log out, then log in again then my desktop behaves the way it should. But breaks again as soon as I open the Desktop/Screensaver prefs.
I have installed the Aperture 1.5.6 update and the (not that it matters) Keychain update. But, I can't figure this one out.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance

I am new to the Mac, just switched from PCs, am very excited and happy with all things Apple so far EXCEPT that I was really, really ANGRY to find that the trial version of Aperture, WITHOUT ASKING ME, installed two folders in the Desktop Image thing and BROKE my ability to use my own folders there!
"Kinda annoying," as one person on this thread put it, is NOT what that was in my opinion. For me, that alone is enough to decide Aperture is NOT for me!
So here's a solution that worked for me: I put my (virtually unused) trial version of Aperture right in the TRASH, went to the Library and Applications Support and put the Aperture folder in the TRASH, rebooted, and voila, my Desktop Images thing is back to where I had it before Aperture messed it up.
Those of you who want to use Aperture obviously won't find this a happy solution...
By and large, I'm very, very happy with my Mac and impressed as heck with Apple, but boy, don't MESS with the way I set up my own computer without asking me, especially if doing so may completely prevent me from using my computer the way I want to! Apple needs to fix this, and pronto!

Need help with Aperture, Leopard and G5 1.8
I need some help and advice. After doing a clean install of Leopard, I can not open up Aperture (On my G5 1.8). At first it crashed after about 10-15 seconds. So I reinstalled Aperture and now it opens but all I see is Aperture in the finder and NO Aperture window just the desktop.
I've gone through all the discussions for the past couple weeks and have tried everything that has been suggested. Reinstall, delete plist, replace Prokit, etc etc. But one thing I have noticed is that I seem to be the only one having this particular problem. The transition went fine on my new Macbook Pro.
SO, I'm open to any suggestions that anybody has. Thanks much in advance!!Did you do all the software updates? Aperture will not start on my macbook pro. I recently updated to leopard, then did a brand new aperture install. It keeps crashing aperture after the welcome marquee no matter which choice I select.
Ran a software update, and it says 130mb download required to get aperture up to date.
Hopefully that will fix me. Maybe running software update until you show fully updated will work for you?
I installed aperture as admin, if the software update trick does not work, I will try to run aperture one time while logged in as admin to make sure it is not a problem with getting a registration key to update for a first run of the app. If that was it, I will get back to you. I think a lot of people with macs just run as admin all the time to save hassles when installing software.
Best wishes. -
Aperture Library unavailable in Desktop Background
I've been transitioning to Aperture for quite some time and have been having recurring trouble, with both 3.0 and 3.1, in using the Aperture Library in my Desktop Backgrounds preference pane.
When loading the Desktop preference pane, the stock images and an unused iPhoto library load up, but the Aperture library waits for a few moments and then it loads nothing. No tiny arrow on the left, no images in the window, nothing. The Aperture library loads into the Screen Saver preference pane, as well as other places for the iLife Media Browser. JUST NOT the Desktop Background pane.
I took the time to look in the Console for some insight and I got that System Preferences sent the message:
** DesktopPref error: DSKApertureRootSource -loaddata TIME OUT!!! There something wrong with iLife Media Browser
Yes, that would be Apple's poor grammar. If anybody has ANY insight into this, I'd welcome it, because I'd love to get this solved.
For those who might already suggest, let me note that I have rebuilt the library twice, repaired permissions, blah blah blah.I have exactly the same problem, but I can trace it a bit further.
I use three Aperture libraries.
I open one of them in Aperture, and then select the other ones with File > Switch library.
Two of them work fine and appear in "Change desktop background"
The third one does not appear - I only have "aperture" written in grey, but no subfolders.
THIS ONE IS THE ONE CONTAINING FACEBOOK SHARED ALBUMS !!
So I'm afraid the Facebook/flicker sharing functionality could be (once more (*)) the problem here.
Can anyone confirm based on own experience ?
+(*) once more because it seems that these functionalities already break the bridge between Aperture and FrontRow. It does on my iMac, and it has been reported in many other threads also.+

I have an ssh tunnel from localhost:139 to server.company.com:139, and in my /etc/hosts I have server.company.com as an alias for localhost. With Tiger this worked great; command-K, type (or click) smb://server.company.com/share$, and I'm in. Leopard broke this; it tries to be too clever, and says: "This file server is running on your machine. Please access the volumes and files locally."
Anyone know a workaround?I solved the problem by setting up an alias for the loopback interface. Run the following command in the terminal:
sudo ifconfig lo0 alias 127.0.0.2 up
“127.0.0.2″ can be any 127.0.0.x address you like, aside from .1, and it will work just like 127.0.0.1 does. Once you do this–-and properly configure your ssh tunnel–-you can Command-K from the Finder to connect to "smb://127.0.0.2" or "smb://[email protected]", and Leopard will happily connect using this new address instead. The nice thing is this alias will stick around forever, or until you run the same command except with a “-alias”. (Using this trick, there’s no need to mount_smb by hand through the Terminal; pre-Leopard behavior is essentially restored.)
Just like with pre-10.5, keep in mind your ssh session will need to forward both TCP 139 and 445, and you’ll have to run the ssh command as root in order to allow forwarding those privileged port numbers (which is anything below 1024). I just created my ~/.ssh/config file to reflect the funky port forwarding for that host, and then call it using the following command in the terminal:
sudo ssh remoteservername -F /Users/mymac_loginname/.ssh/config
Here is the relevant excerpt from my ~/.ssh/config file…
Host remoteservername
User remoteloginname
LocalForward 127.0.0.2:139 remoteipaddress:139
LocalForward 127.0.0.2:445 remoteipaddress:445
"remoteipaddress" should be 127.0.0.1, unless you are connecting to a Windows server. (See below.)
Since Windows machines do not respond to SMB requests on 127.0.0.1, you will need to point your ssh config either to the IP address of the ‘Microsoft Loopback Adapter’ you manually installed (refer to other sources of info on the web about how to do this; it’s pretty easy), or you will have to point your ssh config to the remote server’s non-loopback IP address. If you are using the second method, be ABSOLUTELY sure you limit access to ‘File and Printer Sharing’ using the Windows Firewall or a hardware firewall, otherwise you could very well open up file sharing to the entire Internet.
Good luck! -
Can I reference my Aperture Library on my desktop from my laptop?
I'd like to be able to bring all of my previews/thumbnails with me on my laptop wherever I go. Can I reference my entire Aperture Library on my desktop from my laptop? Also, if I make any adjustments or new versions on my laptop, will they automatically be synchronized to my Aperture Library on my desktop when I reconnect to the network?
ThanksYou can make a copy of your library and move it to your laptop. If your desktop library has previews enabled then your notebook will be setup with previews. I don't know of any way to have your desktop and notebook share a library that's internal to the desktop. You can have a networked drive that houses your masters and they can be common. I keep a second library on a portable drive and update it weekly so my notebook is upto date. It has been established as the library for the notebook.

Aperture messing up Systemprefs "Desktop Image" in Leopard
hi all,
i did a clean install from mac os x 10.5 leopard. since i installed aperture, updated it to v1.5.6, i can´t choose my own desktop images from system preferences. my own folders disappeared. if want to add them again, system prefreferences is telling me, that they are in the library already.
the problem is reproducible. 2 other imacs here having the same issue.
/M
Message was edited by: slackstarI am experiencing the same issue. in system preferences I can choose any photo from iPhoto but aperture shows nothing. I can see all of my Aperture project names but no photos. My problem extends to the iwork apps too. When I choose the inspector I can choose anything form iPhoto but Aperture only shows up as blank grey squares.

Nope, but then I didn't have any folders before. I just added one to test your theory. Showed up fine.
PS. Maybe try and delete the com.apple.desktop.plist preference file?

Aperture albums freeze the Desktop
Hi all, I'm having a problem that has been vexing me ever since I upgraded to 10.7.2. I am using Aperture 3.2 to manage my photos. When I go to the Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane, everything looks fine. But when I try to scroll down to my Aperture albums, the whole preference pane freezes. No buttons including the close, etc. buttons work. I am able to quit it normally though.
I have tried all the repair options on my Aperture library as well as starting a brand new one to no avail. I have also tried recreating the previews. My albums actually work fine in iMovie and iTunes. iPhoto albums appear fine. Deleting the screensaver related preference files in ~/Library/Preferences and ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost hasn't helped either. The problem persists after reinstalling 10.7.2 and upgrading to Aperture 3.2.1.
When I look in the console, the freeze is associated with a series of messages which look like this:
10/28/11 9:33:53.487 PM System Preferences: It looks like we crashed last time. Reverting to default screen saver.

Once I start scrolling down the screen saver options, I start seeing console messages like the following (they correspond to many of my albums).

IMac 24" Leopard frozen on desktop
Hello,
yesterday the computer just froze on the desktop page. The mouse arrow moves, and when I move the arrow to an icon, it's name pops up, but I can't enter anything, including the Apple icon to force shutdown. I called Apple Support in France, where I live. After shutting off with power button, unplugging and replugging in the system, we tried the command, alt, p and r keys as I started the system up, waited for the three chimes, let it go, but the system then went to desktop but was still in the same "frozen" out state. Next step was to turn off the computer and turn it back on, hold down the "C" and then we were maybe going to try to put in the Leopard upgrade disk and attempt a cure from there, but either I was doing something wrong, or in spite of holding down the "C" key until I saw the Apple logo and spinning wheel during start-up, and then releasing the "C" key, the computer just continued through start-up until opening to the desktop page and we are still in the frozen state. A week or so ago I did buy a mighty mouse bluetooth mouse, but it seems to be functioning fine. The Imac was also attached to a second lcd screen, which still functions as before, although I turned it off once the problem started. A few weeks ago I added 1 gb of Ram, but I Istat tested it almost everyday just to be sure that the system recognized and functioned properly. The machine is only a few months old and has worked pretty flawlessly, except from time to time the Microsoft for Mac "Word" didn't respond. I basically do internet suring and writing, whether on word or powerpoint. No heavy usage.
Any recommendations to get me back on track. Will I have to do a complete re-install? If so, can I retain my data? Or is this machine in need of Apple repair?
ThanksThank you for your questions. The keys seemed to work when I pressed the Cmd, alt, P and R at startup, followed by the three chimes. I did notice that when I pressed the enter key, the name under the Hardisk icon opened, as if I was to rename the icon. I was so busy with the Apple Help, I didn't bother to plug in my USB mouse to see if was possibly the bluetooth mouse that was not clicking to open icons or files. A friend thought it might be the bluetooth mouse that was not clicking properly.
Unfortunately, I'm not in France for the next 4 days where the computer is, so I don't know if the cap lock, and keyboard work properly, or whether it's the bluetooth mouse or not. The fact that when I pressed the "C" key at startup and I wasn't able to stop the normal startup led the apple support person to believe that something big was wrong. Perhaps it simply the mouse that wasn't clicking....if I'm lucky...or maybe the keyboard. My friend that that if the machine, each time, booted up normally, that perhaps I won't need major work or a re-install.
What are my chances here?
Thanks again, and I'll post the results of both using the usb mouse and your suggestion on the keyboard Monday. -
Spotlight menu hidden behind menu bar in Leopard when "Show Desktop" Expose
The Spotlight menu is partially hidden behind the menu bar in Leopard when using "Show Desktop" (part of Expose). I tried using "Show Desktop" with keyboard shortcut keys and screen corners, and this behavior still exists. I tried toggling Spaces on and off, and the behavior still exists.
This has been an issue since day one of using Leopard, and on every bootup. It's absolutely reproducible, and this is a bug, unless someone can prove me wrong? (Hopefully, I'm wrong.)Fixed in 10.5.2.

Aperture / Leopard / Nikon RAW file issues
I run a small business with multiple macs, some with leopard, some without. I've found that on the Machine with leopard, the RAW image files from my Nikon Camera com out corrupted, both in Preview, Quick Look, and Aperture. When I tried them on My machine running Tiger, they are fine, but after I try them in leopard, find them corrupted, and bring them back to Tiger, they're still corrupted. Any ideas on what's causing this, I hear Time Machine and Aperture don't get along, but I've tried it both with and without it, and the same issues come up. HELP!!
Consider yourself fortunate if you've had no issues but even Apple knows there are many users experiencing various corruption issues. I myself have been in contact with support personnel at Apple regarding issues with jpegs. I have over 1500 of 2100 jpegs that not only do not display in Aperture but any attempt to do so will crash the application immediately. Not only that, but attempting to view them in the Finder or Preview will do the same. I've had no issues with NEF but I've also temporarily stopped usage of Aperture and have reverted to my copy of Lightroom which displays none of these issues in discussion here but does have other issues which are well documented on the Lightroom forum.
Just for the record, I did a clean install of Leopard and then installed Aperture 1.5. I then upgraded to 1.5.6 before restoring my backup library. The crashing started immediately and it wasn't until several email exchanges with a very responsive Apple engineer that we determined an issue with the jpegs.

IMac 24" Wonder-Land - Adobe Photoshop Elements, Aperture, Leopard et al
Hi
I am on the verge of purchasing a 24" iMac but have a number of questions and would value the advice.
I am an enthusiastic (non-pro) photographer. family and memory stuff. I use a Nikon D40.
I currently use Photoshop Elements, but as I understand it this cannot be used on Intel Macs. Anyone know when Elements will be available. I have considered full Photoshop but feel it may be a bit too overkill for my needs, especially cost. Aperture may fit on a cost basis but still may be over spec for me. Any thoughts?
Finally as Leopard is due out in the next few months (?) is it worth waiting before purchasing the iMac?
Many thanks
JonWhere did you hear that PE would not work on an Intel Mac? My understanding is that you have two choices. You can run the mac version and rosetta will handle it though it may be slower than on a G5. Or you can run the windows version on Parallels - this may also be slower than running it on a pc. Either way, you have it until a new version gets released.
You may want to check out Photoshop CS3 on their site or the NAPP site to see if it is worth the extra $ to have not only a program that will work on the Intel Mac smoothly but will also do some extras for you that PE won't. Several if not all of the photo programs you have listed have 30 day trial periods. Download and play - it will give you a better idea of what you want.

Installing aperture on new mac desktop
I upgraded my desktop when the old drive died and now want to load Aperture 3.2.2. that I have on my MacBook Pro so that I can take advantage of the larger screen. It won't let me because I don't have the original serial number of the old Aperture that i upgraded to 3.2.2. Why doesn't the App Store recognize that my apple id is authorized for Aperure 3.2.2 as it does for other apple apps (Garage Band, Numbers, Pages, etc)? How do I get around this serial number problem. I clearly have a valid serial number for 3.2.2.
Help please!I'm having the same thing with a Photosmart B9180. Some users report that the driver should be Photosmart Pro B9180 series (AA54A9)but mine reports as 9100 series. I cant get good prints.. they are all washed out and murky. The only way i can get it to print properly is using preview or iphoto.
Useless. HP tell me that they dont support Macs with their online chat thing.. how can they NOT support Macs with a pro studio printer.. crazy! -
Printing with ICC profiles: Aperture/Leopard/Canon 9500
My Canon 9000 prints perfectly with Aperture 1.5 and 2.0 under Tiger.
A friend with a Canon 9500 eports that the cannot turn off color correction in the printer driver under Leopard. It seems that the option is greyed out.
There is a bit of chatter about this in various PS/LR and other forums.
Is anyone printing successfully from AP to a Canon 9500 under Leopard? If so, what driver and settings are you using?
DiploStratI just picked up the 9000 today and I had the same problem too. I discovered that the CUPS driver doesn't allow turning off the profile in the driver. I installed the other driver that is available from the Canon website and it does allow it to be set to 'none'. It is the 4.8.5 version. However, the results I am getting do not look as good as it does from iPhoto with the same settings. I am still experimenting with it.

Coordinating Aperture between laptop and desktop
I'm working on a photo archival project that involves several thousand images, mainly scanned.
I do my scanning and image cleanup on my desktop (a 24"3.06 GHz iMac with 4 GB RAM). Then import the images into my Aperture project.
However, when I am meeting with colleagues working on this project, I need to use a laptop (Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz, 2gb RAM) so we can meet outside my office.
Here is my question: how can I keep the copies of the Aperture project on both computers reasonably synchronized?
Thanks for any advice.
RichI have a single Aperture library that I move between my desktop G5 and my laptop MBP.
The library resides on a portable 2.5" drive (200 GB) that has both eSATA and USB 2.0 connections. On my G5 I get the speed of eSATA, and when I'm using my laptop, the USB speed is tolerable.
The great thing is, I keep some images IN the library (managed), and most of the images on another, much larger drive (referenced). Any projects I'm actively working on, I can keep the images managed in the Aperture library, so I have them on both my desktop and laptop. The rest of the images I simply "push out of" the library and reference them on the big hard drive, which stays attached to the desktop G5.
For me, this arrangement works very well. If I am on a trip, shooting, I create a new project and Aperture "manages" my images in the library. When I get home, I tell Aperture to "push" the images in the new project out to the big hard drive, and "reference" the images. It works quickly and easily.
Perhaps something similar would work for you?
Enjoy!
