APEX SIG

Hi all,
For those of you not already aware, the newly formed APEX SIG (Special Interests Group) has now announced the leadership and officer positions. The positions are as follows -
President: Steve Howard
Vice President: Dimitri Gielis
Web Content Coordinator: Doug Gault
Web Master: Tony Jedlinski
SIG Officer: John Scott
SIG Officer: Scott Spendolini
SIG Officer: Vikas Agnihotri
I'm sure that most (if not all) of those names are already familiar to you if you've used these forums for any length of time. The amount of Application Express knowledge and experience of each of the other SIG officers and leaders is definitely going to be an asset to the SIG as a whole. Now that the positions have been formalised I'm very keen to be working alongside such a capable and enthusiastic group of people.
The purpose of the APEX SIG is to provide a centralised, cohesive resource for anyone and everyone involved with Application Express. There are already lots of plans as to what areas and forms this resource will cover, however one of the key areas that I'm very excited about is that the SIG will effectively become a single unified channel through which we can give Oracle feedback about APEX and the direction that we (as users) would like it to head in. I'm sure everyone reading this probably has a feature they'd like to see implemented in APEX, or perhaps doesn't like the way something currently works, or has found a bug they'd like to see fixed. Well through the SIG, we will be able to pass those ideas/concerns/bugs etc directly through to Oracle team.
Now, what has this got to do with me I hear you ask? Well it's simple, the entire purpose of the SIG is to represent the users of APEX, so if you don't get involved we won't be able to represent your views. There are already lots of plans being made about what we can do, but ultimately without the support and involvement of everyone on these forums (and outside of them) then we won't truely be able to act on your behalf and in your best interests. There will be more announcements soon about ways in which you can help, so I'd urge everyone who is an advocate of Application Express and is keen to make this tool better and more widely adopted to get involved.
As some of you may know I already host the Unofficial Apex Wiki (http://wiki.shellprompt.net/bin/view/Apex/WebHome), as part of the centralised resource plans we will be migrating the Wiki so that it falls within the APEX SIG, now obviously it makes sense to 'eat our own dogfood' and use an APEX based Wiki so we may require some volunteers to help with that migration.
On a final note, I want to stress again how important it is for us to have your involvement in this, if you've ever sat and thought "I wish APEX did this..." or "I hate the way it does that...", then please get involved with the SIG, let's all make APEX an even better development environment because we'll all benefit from that.
The APEX SIG Website is at -
http://apexsig.oracle.ioug.org/
Thanks for reading.
John.

Thank you Carl, Arie and Colin,
As Jes explained brilliantly, the seven of us driving this user group are more than ready to get going and make the SIG and website more than wishes and promises.
Based on the extra effort and involvement you and many others display daily on this forum, I have no reason to expect the APEX community will be any less involved in building the SIG. However, I second Jes' encouragement to the community to participate and the warning that whatever great things we do to create a structure and format, we seven can only create so much content. It will be the active participation by the SIG members that will really add value.
Steve

  • APEX SIG Roundtable at OOW

    Have "finally" posted my notes from the roundable discussion at OOW on the main SIG web page. http://apexsig.oracle.ioug.org/
    After the elections in a couple of weeks, look for announcements and implementations of some interesting and useful APEX content on our SIG site. If you want to get involved, help with content, or vote, sign up as a member.
    Steve Howard

    I just wanted to 'bump' this back up to the top and to point out that the elections are now taking place for the APEX SIG (look at the link Steve posted).
    If you haven't already signed up as a member of the APEX SIG I'd encourage you to do so and I'll even offer a 20% discount on hosting at Shellprompt.net for any SIG members seeking APEX hosting (I'll avoid the usual 'lawyer speak' of 'this offer is subject to terms and conditions' etc etc).
    Seriously, if you have an interest in APEX, use it in your job or just plain curious about it, it's a great time to join the SIG.

    Thomas,
    I have used PVCS and APEX for some time for a client, and we do not use and of the DIFF capabilities; it's more of a repository that we use for periodic builds than anything else.
    You could try to DIFF two different versions of an APEX application - most of the export file should remain consistent as you make small changes; it may take some getting used to deciphering some of the nomenclature used in the export files, but it would by no means be impossible.

    Hi,
    I have a new project deal I'm working on and my potential customer (and I) need more information on the salability of APEX; up to 10,000 simultaneous users. Is this being done anywhere? What's the best architecture? Any Example web sites?

    I know about a non-public APEX application the German T-Punkt shops are using.
    Dietmar Aust (http://daust.blogspot.com/) was talking about it at the last DOAG APEX SIG workshop. They have 5.000 concurrent users using it every day. It's running on a Oracle RAC.

  • Navigation list issue with dynamic variable

    Hi All,
    I'm a little bit stock with (maybe) a little issue. I'm looking for a way to put variable on a navigation list in the same page. E.X. there is where my navigation list is pointing : f?p=&APP_ID.:20:&SESSION.::&DEBUG.::P20_3,P20_1,P20_2:#État#,#Année Comptable#,#Période Comptable#: .
    I Need to inherit the value ( #État#,#Année Comptable#,#Période Comptable#:) from a sql query from the main region (list are in a subregion ).
    Could some one help me with that please ?
    Thanks in advance !!
    Eric

    Hmm.. on the last APEX SIG day in Belgium Oracle was very dark about that (as usual).
    They even were not sure what features would definitely be present in the new version.
    They did however expect it to be somewhere in october / november
    again. you can mimic by using a report-region looking like a list

    http://www.ioug.org/events/Call_for_Speakers_08.cfm
    Don't delay - submit your abstract by Friday, October 26th.
    Nervous? Questions about the experience? Need help proof reading? Feel free to ask your SIG members/leaders/this forum for help.
    Questions about submitting an IOUG abstract? Please contact [email protected] or call +1.312.673.4894.

    If you are wondering about topics...this forum and its threads provide plenty of possibilities. You can see many of the recurring questions and topics with variations on a theme that would really attract a crowd.
    Off the top of my head - topics on: AJAX functions/functionality, javascript, tabular forms and dependent drop-down lists, manual tabular forms, pdf printing and report templates without BI Publisher, report and tabular form - dynamic column formatting and attribute setting...I'm sure you can think of many more.
    Any of these would draw a crowd and might just justify attending the conference for some APEX developers who need to know "how" and can network with those who know how.

  • A reasonable .sig request?

    HI all,
    About once a year I post a request here for a .sig facility on these fora.
    I know these things can be abused, but there is light moderation on the groups and people who
    feel the need for 57 line sigs can be gently shown the error of their ways...
    It's a pain to have to always remember to cut and paste "SELECT * FROM V$VERSION and
    other bits and pieces.
    10 lines for those who want it?
    SOS - Save Our Sigs... Join the campaign now :p
    Paul...

    >
    And I'm sure if a client like Oracle requested (what I think is) a tiny feature, I'm sure it
    would be given due consideration by Jive.
    Not when the version of Jive being used by Oracle forums is out of date and unsupported. And you know this how? Not that I'm doubting you, you understand, it's just that such
    information is hardly a credit to Oracle, and at the risk of sounding boring, it's hardly
    a credit to Oracle that their own software can't run a relatively feature-limited
    peer-2-peer website - either with Apex or Beehive...
    Maybe it should tell us all we need to know about what Oracle thinks of those
    who volunteer to provide a tier of support that would otherwise be unavailable?
    That would be like someone asking Oracle to just make a few tweaks and patches to Oracle 7 for them.Funny that you should mention Oracle 7 - Mogens Norgaard (he of OakTable (site) and
    oracle Insights (book) fame) says on page 92 of that book that "Most customers
    really only need Oracle version 7.3 with respect to features... new features being
    introduced are either refinements on existing ones or features needed by the
    UPS's and eBay's of the world"...
    Seeing as one can run Jive on MySQL (what fraction of the Oracle 7.3 does it have again?),
    it looks like Mogens is right in this case anyway.
    As a matter of interest, were Oracle running the MySQL version before they purchased
    Sun?

  • Problem in generating HTML tables in apex

    Hi friends,
    I coulnt able to generate an email in the HTML table format with a background color since im receiving only in a plain text manner.

    Why it is not generating in a table via email, what is the issue.
    Thanks

    Edited by: Saro on May 17, 2011 12:50 PM

    Hello Saro,
    first of all: the html code you are generating is not valid html. There is no closing body and html tag. Ther eis one closing head tag to much. In your table many opening row tags are missing.
    second: have a closer look at what you are doing with your variable l_body_html. At first, you add your styles to it and then you overwrite it with your table instead of adding it.
    Regards,

    DECLARE
    l_mail_id NUMBER;
    l_body VARCHAR2(4000);
    l_body_html VARCHAR2(4000);
    BEGIN
    l_body_html := '<html>
    <head>
    <style type="text/css">
    body{font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    font-size:10pt;
    margin:30px;
    background-color:#ffffff;}
    span.sig{font-style:italic;
    font-weight:bold;
    color:#811919;}
    </style>
    </head><body>'||utl_tcp.crlf;
    l_body_html :=
    '<h1>Laptop Request</h1>'||
    'Employee Number: '||:P45_EMPLOYEE_NUMBER||'
    '||
    'Email Address: '||:P45_EMAIL_ADDRESS||'

  • ODTUG - Hyperion SIG

    Below is a copy of a letter that can be found on the ODTUG Hyperion SIG site (www.ODTUG.com), please take a minute to read when you have a chance.
    Thanks
    August 1, 2009
    Dear ODTUG Members,
    My name is Gary Crisci and I am the new president of the Oracle Development Tools User Group - Hyperion Special Interest Group. I wanted to take a moment of your time to introduce myself and the rest of the board and tell you a little bit about the ODTUG Hyperion SIG and what our plans are for this year.
    Our SIG board is made up of some of the most talented individuals in this field. Angela Wilcox of JC Penney is our Secretary and Cameron Lackpour of InterRel is our website coordinator. Other members of the board are Doug Bliss of Ace Cash Express, Natalie Delemar of Randstad, Quinlan Eddy of Star Analytics, Jeff McAhren of HealthMarkets, Edward Roske of InterRel, Tim Tow of Applied OLAP, and John Weimar of Kerdock Consulting. I’m sure many of you recognize most of these names and would agree we have some of the best Hyperion talent on our board. We are also privileged to have Al Marciante of Oracle as a board advisor.
    As president of the Hyperion SIG, my primary role is to lead the committee that organizes the Hyperion content for the Kaleidoscope conference and this is something the board and I are already working on. Kaleidoscope 2009 was a huge success. We were one of the only conferences this year to increase our attendance despite one of the worst economic climates in recent history. This is a testament to the quality of the speakers, presentations, and training featured at the Kaleidoscope conference. If you have not already checked it out, I would recommend going to the Kaleidoscope website (http://www.odtugkaleidoscope.com/) and having a look around. Our goal is to make Kaleidoscope 2010 an even bigger success, with more speakers, more presentation tracks, more vendors, and more attendees. Kaleidoscope has become the conference for Essbase developers, and as an Essbase developer I can assure you this will remain one of the primary focuses of the conference. However, the board and I plan to expand our scope further next year to provide more content for other areas of the Hyperion suite such as Planning, HFM/Enterprise, and our new friends at OBI. As developers, many of us on the board have worked on financial consolidation projects and recognize the development efforts that go into an HFM roll out. The developers that work on these projects are talented technicians and deserve a place to network and expand their skill set. We will provide them this opportunity at Kaleidoscope 2010.
    I would like to ask all of you to start thinking about what you would like to see at Kaleidoscope next year and encourage you to reach out to me and the rest of the SIG board. The Kaleidoscope conference is your conference and I hope you will participate in helping us make it the best it can be. This invitation goes out to all members and non-members as well as vendors. In addition to building up user attendance at the conference, I have also made it a goal to increase vendor participation this year. So if you are a consultant or vendor, please reach out to us with your ideas.
    Beyond the Kaleidoscope conference, one of my other major goals as president is to increase our SIG’s membership. If you are not a member of the ODTUG – Hyperion SIG, I would like to invite you to visit our SIG website (http://www.odtug.com/apex/f?p=500:320:0::::P320_SIG_ID:121) and consider becoming a member. ODTUG offers two membership types. There are paid members and associate members (associate membership is free). Paid members get the benefit of premium content and discounts to ODTUG events such as Kaleidoscope. Becoming a member of an industry group is one of the best things you can do for your career. I have personally gained so much from my industry affiliations. Beyond the networking opportunities and access to industry information, it is also something valuable to add to your resume. Participation in an industry group shows a dedication to your craft and represents you as a serious professional. I encourage all of you to join us if you are not currently a member. Additionally, please join the ODTUG Linkedin group (http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=1796201) as another way to be kept in the loop on communications with the board.
    Lastly, I would like to take the opportunity to thank those of you who voted me back onto the board this year, and I would like to thank the Hyperion SIG board for entrusting me with the role of president. I consider it a privilege to serve on this board and in this capacity. I would also like to thank our outgoing president Edward Roske. Edward has committed himself, and his company, to the ODTUG Hyperion SIG in a way few individuals do. His tireless efforts have led to Kaleidoscope being the premier Hyperion conference and I can only hope to do as good a job as he has done. Lastly, I would like to thank the ODTUG board of directors for their overwhelming support of our group. ODTUG has stepped up in a way no other organization has to support the Hyperion community and their support has been unwavering. They have given us the opportunity to bring our culture and integrate it with their unique philosophy of how a user base community should be served, with an emphasis on training, and focus on the development of the individual. The enthusiasm demonstrated by ODTUG for Hyperion would lead you to believe they have been working with us for many years. They have truly welcomed us into their family and we appreciate it.
    I would like to thank you for your participation in the ODTUG Hyperion SIG; our members are what make our group the best in the industry. Please do not hesitate to reach out to myself or any other member of the board if there is anything we can do for you.
    Best regards,
    Gary C. Crisci

    I love K-scope! It really has been the best conference for developing my knowledge and talent with Essbase. Thanks to Edward, Gary, and the rest of the Hyperion SIG board for all of your work.
