ODTUG - Hyperion SIG

Below is a copy of a letter that can be found on the ODTUG Hyperion SIG site (www.ODTUG.com), please take a minute to read when you have a chance.
Thanks
August 1, 2009
Dear ODTUG Members,
My name is Gary Crisci and I am the new president of the Oracle Development Tools User Group - Hyperion Special Interest Group. I wanted to take a moment of your time to introduce myself and the rest of the board and tell you a little bit about the ODTUG Hyperion SIG and what our plans are for this year.
Our SIG board is made up of some of the most talented individuals in this field. Angela Wilcox of JC Penney is our Secretary and Cameron Lackpour of InterRel is our website coordinator. Other members of the board are Doug Bliss of Ace Cash Express, Natalie Delemar of Randstad, Quinlan Eddy of Star Analytics, Jeff McAhren of HealthMarkets, Edward Roske of InterRel, Tim Tow of Applied OLAP, and John Weimar of Kerdock Consulting. I’m sure many of you recognize most of these names and would agree we have some of the best Hyperion talent on our board. We are also privileged to have Al Marciante of Oracle as a board advisor.
As president of the Hyperion SIG, my primary role is to lead the committee that organizes the Hyperion content for the Kaleidoscope conference and this is something the board and I are already working on. Kaleidoscope 2009 was a huge success. We were one of the only conferences this year to increase our attendance despite one of the worst economic climates in recent history. This is a testament to the quality of the speakers, presentations, and training featured at the Kaleidoscope conference. If you have not already checked it out, I would recommend going to the Kaleidoscope website (http://www.odtugkaleidoscope.com/) and having a look around. Our goal is to make Kaleidoscope 2010 an even bigger success, with more speakers, more presentation tracks, more vendors, and more attendees. Kaleidoscope has become the conference for Essbase developers, and as an Essbase developer I can assure you this will remain one of the primary focuses of the conference. However, the board and I plan to expand our scope further next year to provide more content for other areas of the Hyperion suite such as Planning, HFM/Enterprise, and our new friends at OBI. As developers, many of us on the board have worked on financial consolidation projects and recognize the development efforts that go into an HFM roll out. The developers that work on these projects are talented technicians and deserve a place to network and expand their skill set. We will provide them this opportunity at Kaleidoscope 2010.
I would like to ask all of you to start thinking about what you would like to see at Kaleidoscope next year and encourage you to reach out to me and the rest of the SIG board. The Kaleidoscope conference is your conference and I hope you will participate in helping us make it the best it can be. This invitation goes out to all members and non-members as well as vendors. In addition to building up user attendance at the conference, I have also made it a goal to increase vendor participation this year. So if you are a consultant or vendor, please reach out to us with your ideas.
Beyond the Kaleidoscope conference, one of my other major goals as president is to increase our SIG’s membership. If you are not a member of the ODTUG – Hyperion SIG, I would like to invite you to visit our SIG website (http://www.odtug.com/apex/f?p=500:320:0::::P320_SIG_ID:121) and consider becoming a member. ODTUG offers two membership types. There are paid members and associate members (associate membership is free). Paid members get the benefit of premium content and discounts to ODTUG events such as Kaleidoscope. Becoming a member of an industry group is one of the best things you can do for your career. I have personally gained so much from my industry affiliations. Beyond the networking opportunities and access to industry information, it is also something valuable to add to your resume. Participation in an industry group shows a dedication to your craft and represents you as a serious professional. I encourage all of you to join us if you are not currently a member. Additionally, please join the ODTUG Linkedin group (http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=1796201) as another way to be kept in the loop on communications with the board.
Lastly, I would like to take the opportunity to thank those of you who voted me back onto the board this year, and I would like to thank the Hyperion SIG board for entrusting me with the role of president. I consider it a privilege to serve on this board and in this capacity. I would also like to thank our outgoing president Edward Roske. Edward has committed himself, and his company, to the ODTUG Hyperion SIG in a way few individuals do. His tireless efforts have led to Kaleidoscope being the premier Hyperion conference and I can only hope to do as good a job as he has done. Lastly, I would like to thank the ODTUG board of directors for their overwhelming support of our group. ODTUG has stepped up in a way no other organization has to support the Hyperion community and their support has been unwavering. They have given us the opportunity to bring our culture and integrate it with their unique philosophy of how a user base community should be served, with an emphasis on training, and focus on the development of the individual. The enthusiasm demonstrated by ODTUG for Hyperion would lead you to believe they have been working with us for many years. They have truly welcomed us into their family and we appreciate it.
I would like to thank you for your participation in the ODTUG Hyperion SIG; our members are what make our group the best in the industry. Please do not hesitate to reach out to myself or any other member of the board if there is anything we can do for you.
Best regards,
Gary C. Crisci

  • Please Vote - ODTUG Hyperion SIG Election Starts Today!

This week ODTUG holds it's annual Hyperion SIG Elections. No matter who you vote for, I really hope you'll vote in the election. There is a collection of great folks running. The list includes several friends, associates, and compatriots. However, I hope after reading my running statements below, your decision will be a bit easier.
While I normally much prefer the "in the trenches doing" part over "self promotion", I want to take this time to self promote so that, if elected, I'll be able to DO even more.
Technology & service has been an integral part of my life for over 20 years, EPM products specifically for over 12 years. My ever growing passion for the Hyperion technology has reached the point, after consulting & developing for 12 years, that now I'm building a software product designed to make using and administering these products an even greater joy.
I've also found a great fit in ODTUG and the people who serve within it. By serving on the Hyperion SIG I can give back far more than just helping to stuff bags at the conference and helping with ambassador needs (yes, if you had a bag at KScope, it probably had some of my sweat on it).
As a business owner and independent software vendor I have the time, energy, experience, and freedom to be a willing steward for the ODTUG community and a dedicated, capable, and energetic contribute to the Hyperion SIG.
While these statements are more about the election, my overall dedication to ODTUG doesn't begin and end with the SIG; I will continue to contribute as a volunteer regardless of the election results, but I'm sure I'll be able to provide you the greatest level of service as part of the Hyperion SIG. Thanks for your support."

  • Gary broke 1000

    Wow,
I just noticed Gary Crisci passed the 1000 point mark in answers. He is my go to guy when it comes to MDX questions and its about time he made it to the 1k mark. Gary, I appreciate all of your efforts on the forum an with the ODTUG Hyperion SIG. Keep up the good work and you will soon surpass me. (I would say John Goodwin, but no one can catch that tireless guru. I just want to know when he sleeps, eats or works. I envision him locked up in a room doing nothing but answering posts. For those of us that do real work, 1K is a formitable task.

I made a statment in jest in my first post about John Goodwin. I said " For those of us that do real work" implying that John does not work. While I don't know John personally, just through the board, I'm sure she works as hard if not harder than many of us. I also think he must not eat or sleep with the amount of time he spends helping others on the board. I think there is a bit of jealousy on my part, seein how much knowledge John has and his willingness to share and still have time to do his real work. While the post was to commend Gary for his efforts, getting 1000 points is tough to do, John is so far ahead of any of us, he could take a holiday for a year (I believe John is in England and so a holiday instead of a vacation) as we would still not catch up to his accomplishment.
So, John, if I insulted you in any way, I would like to appologize

  • Interesting Information about Hyperion User Groups and Conferences

Ed Roske has an interesting post on his blog, including a letter from John Kopcke (SVP of EPM at Oracle). There is a lot of content discussing the disbandment of the Hyperion User Groups and the absorption by OAUG with the new Hyperion SIG (Special Interest Group). In addition there is discussion of conference's focusing on Hyperion content.
    Take a look at http://looksmarter.blogspot.com/2008/06/john-kopckes-letter-to-hyperion.html
    Best Regards,

    Gary,
    Thanks for nice post

  • How can i append the variable to filename in import statement?

how can i append variable(substitution variable) to file name in import command for maxL?
example : For suppose there is a file like "dataload.txt" and a variable like cur_month(august).How can i rename the file like daload_august in import statement.
    Edited by: 788996 on Aug 22, 2010 11:18 PM

Are you saying you want to use an OS level environment variable in a MaxL statement to substitute for an entire file name? I am going to illustrate Windows, but do it your own way in *nix if you want.
    YourCallingCode.cmd
REM Note the \\ and then the \\, you had \\ and \
    SET curmon=c:\\ABC\\datafile_21_AUG.txt
REM Call MaxL with a paramenter
    startMaxL.cmd DoItForTheCurrentMonth.msh %curmon%DoItForTheCurrentMonth.msh
    login blah blah for blah ;
import database appname.dbname data from local text data_file $curmon using server rules_file "rulefile"
on error abort ;The trick is to change whatever's in % and % and replace it with a $ in the MaxL script.
I gave a presentation last year on MaxL at ODTUG Kaleidoscope. If you go to http://www.odtug.com, then Tech Resources, then Essbase, then search on my name, you'll find "Master Essbase with MaxL Automation". More than you could ever want to know about MaxL, variables (parameter, environment, and explicitly declared), scripting, etc., etc., are all there for the taking. If you're not already a member, you'll have to join, but an associate membership is free. You can then download my presentation and all of the others. It is a treasure chest of technical tips and knowledge.
Yes, I am a fan a member of the Hyperion SIG, so I am ever so slightly biased. Regardless, it is good information, for free.

If you want to substitute part of the data file name, you can do that too:
    set curmon=21_AUG
Your MaxL statement would look like:
import database appname.dbname data from local text data_file "c:\\ABC\\datafile_$curmon.txt" using server rules_file "rulefile"
         on error abort ;

  • Hyperion System 9 Sizing

I am working on Hyperion System 9 sizing activity. In this regards, I would like to know -
    1. Is there Hyperion Sizing Guide available? If yes, then pl. let me know the location.
    2. What are the factors taken into consideration while placing various Hyperion System 9 components on various servers in architecture?
    3. Is there sizing questionnaire available for Hyperion System 9?
    Nitin

Contact Oracle support. They can get you in touch with their application install team from Oracle Consulting. The install team has a PDF file that shows sizing recommendations for various user levels. I would also suggest that many of the Oracle Partners (interRel, Titan, Eric Helmer from the Hackett Group, etc.) also probably have their own flavor of this document.
Or check Eric's document from ODTUG Kaliedoscope 2008: [Hackett Kaliedoscope doc 2008|http://www.odtug.com/apex/f?p=500:595:2016742691877265::NO::P595_CONTENT_ID:3626]
I would also suggest that the post count has nothing to do with one's newness to Essbase. Todd gave a good answer, too bad you were skeptical of his information.

  • Great Training opportunity  - ODTUG

There are a ton of threads on this and other forums about training. Better than going to an individual training class is to attend the ODTUG Kaleidoscope conference. Not only is it cheaper, but you will get more out if it.
As of today, more has been confirmed for theconference. This is the best technical conference for Hyperion products. You can read about the latest updates on my blog at http://glennschwartzbergs-essbase-blog.blogspot.com/
You can all of the conference details at http://www.odtugkaleidoscope.com/index.html

I just made an update on my blog as well.
    Check out: http://garycris.blogspot.com/2009/02/some-tips-for-kaleidoscope-2009.html
Unlike some of the other posts informing you of all the great content, I put together a list of tips to help get your employer to approve your trip. Funds are very tight this year, but you don't want to let that stop you from attending this conference. Check out my list and see if it can help you get your trip approved.

  • UKOUG Conference Series Hyperion & BI 2009 - 24th & 25th June @ Twickenham

Apologies for the blatant plug, but felt it was worth posting - especially for UK based people.
If you haven't heard about it already, UKOUG are holding a Conference for all Hyperion & BI users on 24th & 25th June 2009 at Twickenham Stadium. If you are unfamiliar with the UKOUG they are a strong voice in the Oracle community and have been established for over 25 years.
The great thing about this event is that the agenda for this Conference is chosen by a committee made up of customers and partners, of which I am part of. We chose an agenda that we feel would be of great benefit to the majority of people who will attend and will hopefully enable you to update knowledge and skills whilst networking with other Hyperion professionals.
Please follow the below link for more details and to sign up:
    http://www.oug.org/hyperion
I hope to see you there, I will be introducing speakers on the day and presenting on ODI as well as a great Essbase case study.
    Andy King
    http://www.analitica.co.uk

    Andy,
While the conference looks good, you are competing with the best technical Hyperion conference around ODTUGs kaleidoscope conference it is from June 21st to June 25th in beautiful Monterey California. There is a full sunday symposium with Oracle developers on what is comming out in the next two years, the 4 action packed days with three tracks and hands on labs. While I would love to attend the UKOUG conference all the cool kids will be at Kaleidoscope including all of the ORacle Ace and Ace Directors in the space.

    at com.thortech.xl.adapterGlue.ScheduleItemEvents.adpADDUSERTOADGROUP.implementation(adpADDUSERTOADGROUP.java:49)
This is definitely a Custom Adapter because OOTB Adapter name is adpADCSADDUSERTOGROUP and NOT adpADDUSERTOADGROUP
So, it is your custom code and in the code you are passing incorrect value of the Active Directory Child process form...
The correct name is UD_ADUSRC and the Group Name column name is UD_ADUSRC_GROUPNAME.
While you are passing UD_AD_CHILD as the child process form and UD_AD_CHILD_GRP_NAME as Group Name column name..
Use OOTB Adapter... Correct these discrepancies... Your addition of group will work
And since you are creating custom adapter, you need to be more careful and remain consistent throughout..
Then if you want to use UD_AD_CHILD_GRP_NAME, use it everywhere consistently... Pass only this value in the adapter...
And even in lookups, if any... Search everywhere... Keep things consistent... They will work... Because good news is that you are able to create user in AD via Java Code...
And if any post is even slightly helpful, it is a good habit to mark it with helpful or correct ... And also mark the entire question as answered so that other people also are benefited.
