Apogee Duet Fire Wire Hard Drive FW800 Port

Hey everyone. I recently bought the Apogee Duet which is friggin awesome by the way. I am now in need of an external 7200 HD that I will be saving all of my recordings onto.
I've heard that if I plug a FW800 Hard Drive into my MacBook Pro 09 edition, the transfer rate wont be that of FW800 speed with the Apogee Duet attached to the hard drive via the FW400 port on the Hard drive...
The reason I bring this up is there are two versions of the SAME HD im thinking about getting.
1) One is 150 dollars because it only has FW400 and USB 2.0 support
2) The other one is 180 dollars because it has FW800/FW400/USB 2.0/eSATA support.
Would it be advantageous to me at all to get the 180 one if the transfer rate from the MBP to the HD is that of FW800?

I don't know anything about Apogee ..., but by all means buy a FW800 drive. Ignoring Apogee, data transfers will be much faster, and you can make a bootable clone on this drive for activities benefiting from the use of a large fast external). The Buffalo 1TB 7200 RPM can be had at Newegg.com, for example, for less than $140. Buffalo makes good drives.

  • Can I use my apogee duet fire wire with an new iMac?

Hi! I'm recording with my mac Book Pro, Logic Pro X and an Apogee Duet Fire Wire. Now I would like to work with an iMac.
Can I still use my Apogee interface and Logic Pro X on both computers?

Yes, you can switch between the two Macs. If your iMac does not have a Firewire 400 port. You may use a Firewire 400-800 cable or even a 400-800 cable with Firewire to Thunderbolt Adapter.

  • Importing Help from fire wire hard drive

    Hi
    I have a Canon HV20 and a My Book 500 Gig Hard drive and I'm using a Ibook G4.
Here's my Problem , I only have one Firewire Input so I Plugged My Book In it and Put the Cameras firewire in the Hard drives fire wire out and When I try to Import Final cut Express can never find that it is plugged in to my Hard drive but when I go to Imovie It Finds it Easy.
So how can I import My footage directly to my Hard drive with out using Imovie?

hey there Michealbak, welcome to Discussions,
i've used a Belkin Firewire hub for 5 years w/ no issues because i needed more Firewire ports on my G4 iMac connecting FW audio, Sony cam & ext FW HDDs. then i used it briefly on my MacBook for the same purpose as you, needed to connect a FW HDD & my video cam. as Tom states Canon cams can have issues w/ multiple devices on the same FW buss. the hub may or may not help, as others have reported issues w/ the MyBook line of HDDs.

  • External fire wire hard drive sleep trouble

I have two Seagate fire wire external hard drives. One is a 200 gig, the other a 300 gig. Both drives were working fine untill I think the last OS 10.4.2 update. Anyway, after my Imac wakes from sleep, when Finder calls up one of the external hard drives, finder hangs up with the color spinning wheel. Also, if Itunes calls up the disk for a song, it will hang also. I have to reboot. The drives will not return from their sleep state, I guess. My USB Maxtor external 300 gig drive works fine, but it does not seem to power down like it once did. Any ideas how to fix this? I had to just turn off the firewire drives. I do keep an Ipod attached via firewire, and it works fine.

Sounds like you need to run the repair option in Disk Utility on the 2 firewire drives, see if that fixes the problem.
You may need to run repair 2 -3 times just to make sure.

  • Unable to mount external fire-wire hard drive - help, please!

After working the last couple of days to resolve the failure of an internal drive, now one of my external drives (LaCie fire-wire) will not mount. I was using it to back up the bad internal drive, and probably forgot to eject the drive before turning it off; don't know if this really makes any difference, but just in case...
If I use Disk Utility I can see the LaCie drive, but it will not mount.
When I tried to verify the drive got the following message -
    Invalid sibling link
The volume LaCie HD needs to be repaired
1 HFS volume checked - volume needs repair
Next I tried to repair the drive, and was told -
    Invalid sibling link
    Volume check failed
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
This is where I stopped. I read another post somewhere in the forums about making a disk image of the drive, but I'm afraid of making things worse by proceeding without knowing what I'm doing. Any ideas on how I can somehow retrieve the data in the LaCie drive?
Once again, thanks in advance for any help!

Hi! Diskwarrior is always better at repairing drive directories which constitute 99% of all drive problems. I run it fairly regularly usually once a month. BUT I always run it at the first sign of weirdness or problems AND every time I have had a power failure or a forced restart or shutdown because those events usually always damage the drive's directory. Often even though the directory is damaged OSX can go ahead and mount it and it will work ok but eventually the damage builds every time one of those events occur and finally there is a failure to mount or boot. I connect both hard disks that get power from power supply normally. Also have ever changed the format as GUID. Which always use the power cord . I felt confusion why the issue just happened connect both hard disks with extra power at the same time. If i used one hard disk connect to firewire port . Another firewire port connect other firewire device . No problem at all.

  • Mac mini with a fire wire external drive

I have 10 folders with pictures in my fire wire external drive, but mac mini cannot see the pictures in one of the folders. If you click the folder, it shows 0 items. However, if the folder is chosen as a screen saver folder, the pictures show as a slide show. Why is that?

Use the Disk Utility and repair that drive.

  • FW problem with Apogee Duet, Yamaha monitors, and external FW800 HD...

Recently purchased an Apogee Duet and Logic Express 8. Love it so far but there's a cracking noise coming out of the Yamaha monitors when I turn on the external HD via FW800. The Duet is connected via FW400.
It'll be nice to solve this issue. The digital/cracking noise is annoying. It's almost unworkable. Additionally, I use the external FW800 as my recording drive so it's crucial. I guess the FW bus is overloaded. Is an express/34 card the only option? If so, any recommendations.
Besides this, the Duet sounds awesome w/out the FW800 HD plugged in.
    Thanks, mT.

I'm having the same issue -- lots of crackly digital noise coming through my studio monitors (but not through the headphones). The noise, I find, is particularly loud when the 48v is on. Is that the case with you? I initially discovered the issue while trying to record with an AKG C 451 B condenser. When the mic was getting phantom via the Duet, I was getting digital crackling. However, when I put a preamp between the condenser and the Duet (in this case a UA Solo/610) and had the preamp supply the 48v, the crackling was gone. So: is this an issue with the FW or an issue with the Duet's phantom power?
(I'm using the Duet with Logic Pro 8)

  • Lacie Drives FW800 ports not working?

    Hi all,
I have been browsing through the community trying to find out why my two D2's will not work.   I am trying to use the FW 800 connection.  the drives work just fine using 400 and USB.  I took the IMAC in and the retailer and we were able to connect FW 800 devices-so we - know that it is not the Imac.  Also when looking at the system I get this following:
    Also in looking at the
    Manufacturer:     LaCie
      Model:     0x4136
      GUID:     0xD04BA30104BFB4
Maximum Speed:     Up to 800 Mb/sec
Connection Speed:     Up to 400 Mb/sec
But when tried to connect the Lacie's into another MAC F W 800 port, it was a no go.  This has happened to "both of the drives".  BTW-I never have used FW 800 before.
Two have 2 external Harddrives experiance the same problem just sounds off.  Has anyone every heard of FW 800 ports crapping out on external HDD's?

    Thanks Grant,
The battery is a start and something inexpensive to replace.
I did do a PRAM reset (command + option + P + R) and was able to hear the chime 4 times. I tried resetting it a number of times over the past week, as well as yesterday with no success in reviving the USB ports.  But isn't it weird that my USB powered speakers work by plugging them in any USB port (with the mini jack pugged in the back or front earphone plug)?
I did not use the USB ports on the keyboard until yesterday, so that is not the cause of the other USB and FW800 ports failing. But I'll follow your suggestion and not use them except for the mouse.
Another weird thing that happened yesterday, I have 16GB of RAM and I spent all day trying to troubleshoot a RAM issue that is magically fixed after leaving the computer on overnight to do an extended Hardware Test. The issue was:
    - Only 8 RAMS were being recognized
    - a red LED light appeared on the top riser
    - first I thought I had isolated the faulty RAM bar, and then a second one
    - Then going pair by pair again, I no longer saw the LED light
    - Put back all 8 bars, only 8 GB of RAM recognized
    - Left computer overnight running Hardware test (said it took almost 3 hours, with no errors)
    - Now all 16 GB are recognized!
    Thanks again for the tips

  • External hard drive FW800 diagnostics

I've got a Lacie d2 Big Disk Extreme 500gb external hard drive hooked up to my Power Mac g5 dual 2.7. I've erased the contents and reinitialized it back to zero. My question is: does anyone know of a good diagnostic application, besides Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, TechTools and Apple Hardware test, that I can use to run the drive through a series of diagnostic tests. I guess I need something along the lines of tech tools(I'll never use another Micromat product again after it made my internal HD go down) that can check the disk speed and other specs. The drive had crapped out before and I used Disk Warrior to recover files before I erased and reinitialized and everything appears to be OK but there I want a program that will run it through a series of tests to be sure because my warranty is about to run out.
    Thanks
    g5 dual 2.7   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   4.5 GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9650

I've lost over 5 of these drives over the last 2 years. One of them with no warning whatsoever. They are really, really scarey. Everyone I know who had used them has eventually thrown them in the trash.

  • Fire Wire NOT Working

I have a Mac G5 2.5 For years I have had an M Audio interface connected to the Fire Wire port in the back; it worked consistently. I disconnected the M Audio last night in order to connect my video camera into the Fire Wire port (to import videos into iMovie) However, the computer would not detect the camera. Then I tried the Fire Wire port on the front of the computer, and still the computer would not recognize the camera. I gave up on trying to connect the video camera, disconnected it from the Fire Wire port, then plugged back in the M Audio. But now the M Audio will not work either! I tried both Fire Wire ports, AND I even tried another M Audio Fire Wire 410 just to make sure there was nothing wrong with the first one. I know there is power coming from the Fire Wire ports because the light on the M Audio will flicker, but the computer will not recognize it to allow me to use it the device. I also connected a Fire Wire hard drive - same thing.....the light goes on but the computer does not see the hard drive.
At this point I have to assume that there is something wrong with the Fire Wire ports, as all 4 of my devices would not work. I have worked for years this way with minimal problems. What can I do?

    Hi rolesh79,
I have read that it is not too difficult to burn out the firewire controller on the logic board. Especially, when the device is turned on when plugged in to the mac.
You might try a third party firewire pci card as a replacement. A repair of disk permissions may have an effect. Or try a 800 to 400 adapter: http://www.pcconnection.com/IPA/Shop/Product/Detail.htm?sku=461273&oext=1038A&cisrc=14110944&cisku=461273.

  • Is there a storage limit to a firewire hard drive I can use on G4 Cube?

I've updated my internal HD to the maximum allowed which is 120 gigs. I know I can get a larger HD internally if I buy a special program but didn't know that when I put the 120 gig in so I'm not going to put a larger internal HD in now.
Facts: My Interntal HD is getting fuller buy the month - it now has around 50 gigs of space free. My external Firewire HD is about a 38 gig HD that is almost full.
To my question: Is there a limit to the storage size of an external Fire-wire Hard Drive that I can buy?
Follow up question: How large do external Fire-wire hard drives come in [are sold] now?

    Hi, mjp29 -
So newer external FW Hard Drives obviously have an input FW port but also have an additional export FW connection to keep the FW line going say to infinity?
Not quite to infinity, but close enough for most folk. The limit is something like 31 or 32 devices chained together per port on the Mac.
There is a restriction on using power from the bus - only the first two devices per port should draw power from the Mac. All others should use their own external power - this is sometimes included with a device, sometimes offered as an extra; it all depends on the manufacturer.
It's usually best to provide all firewire devices (if possible) with their own power - this alleviates any added burden on the power supply in the Mac.
In particular, and this may apply to your setup - once a device uses external power, any devices daisy-chained to it must also use external power. If your older single-port drive does not have external power capability, it would need to be connected to a device which uses bus power, or attached to the other firewire port - your G4 Cube has two firewire ports.

  • I have my interface connected to my ex hard drive then to my computer.

so it turns out the new macbook pros do not come with a fire wire 400 port. didn't notice until i brought it home and tried to connect my interface. ha, well i figured i could go through my ex hard drive then from my ex hard drive into my macbook through fire wire 800. You see i have a firewire interface and a fire wire hard drive so i guess what i did is called chaining them together.it worked fine. but then it stopped working. i think it stopped working when my ex hard drive went to sleep but im not sure? this is the only way i can think of having my fire wire interface and my fire wire hard drive connect at the same time. c i need the ex to save my audio files and my interface to use my monitors. i cant figure this out. any help would be great. hope this doesn't read to confusing..
