Apple Displays v. All the Rest

This is my first post to the Apple Discussions. I would just like to note the following:
I am a first-time Mac user, and I am generally satisfied with Apple. My Mini has offered no problems, runs smoothly, and is a fine machine. When I purchased the Mini, I decided to try and use my old Gateway FPD 1500 LCD. I was thrilled when it worked, and I have been using it for several months. However, this is where I start to have an issue.
After several months of using the 15-inch monitor, I decided a bigger monitor was necessary. Apple Displays are supposed to be the best, so I investigated them. To my horror, I discovered Apple only offers a one-year warranty on their monitors if they are purchased separately. Considering Apple's monitors are some of the most expensive on the market, it seems counter intuitive to pay $800 for a 20-inch display and get a one-year warranty.
Why, when companies such as Dell are offering three-year warranty's, does Apple stick with one? Considering the amount of the investment that seems to be a bad idea from an economic and equitable perspective. Unless, and until, Apple offers a a fair warranty on its monitors, I cannot see myself purchasing one however good it may be.

No reason to hesitate indeed. This merits further consideration, that's for sure. The following points should be investigated:
• serial numbers of the defective units
• kind of problem vs serial number
• is the light involved (is it the main cause)
• has someone tried to pinpoint the main cause
• have the units been brought back to the Apple reseller
• have the units been repaired
• if not, has the answer "no" been taken for granted
Now Bill, you will allow me to rectify a major mistake by omission that you did:
This thread began August 17, 2004, more than one year ago.
I didn't look at the curve of responses vs time (didn't have the... time). Didn't look either how many times the same guy has written. But I am confident that those factors as a whole should return the epidemic to... yes, I will say it, a hospital sick room.
(I talked a few minutes ago with an ex-Senior Scientist Level 2 at Apple (those who know me know who...) and he tells me that even he can't have this kind of stats.)
Well, I am first of all a Chemistry Ph.D. This means nothing expect perhaps that I am bone-headed, and that I know about stats inside and out. We simply do not know the number of defective units here. I do not know, that's for sure.
About the professional photo studios, of which I know several: A good number still stick to CRTs and their degraded phosphors. All the serious ones (not all studios are serious, professional or not, alas) calibrate their displays very regularly. Our displays here are calibrated with a Spyder every two weeks. I just checked on a 20" and a 23", just to be sure. No problem there. Granted, one never proves anything with a few examples.
Frankly, in ordinary usage, I would not know if the colours have shifted or not. The thing is calibrated and appears OK by definition, which is absolutely all that counts. I would indeed take a major shift not to be able to calibrate it correctly. If you tell me: I am no longer able to calibrate correctly with my spectrometer, or colours are uneven, that's a different story: back to shop time.
Still another angle: last year, more than half a dozen topics appeared about freezes on desktop G5s. We're speaking here of 1500-post topics, closed by Apple when they were unmanageable. Still, it was later shown that the vast majority of G5s were healthy. My first one was an exception: it was deep-sixed by AppleCare and replaced, pure and simple.
So I repeat: you have a defective display? Bring it back, by all means!

    That's a fine machine and, with 8GB of RAM and 512GB flash storage should serve you well for light video/photo editing as well as for 'normal' usage. And it should last you for years to come.

    Could be a Corrupt download of that song...

  • ITunes won't sync all photos across from iPhoto to my iPad, either when using 'all photos' or manually selecting the events. All the rest sync normally

    Can anyone suggest a workround or reason why I can't sync a batch of about 300 photos in 5 events on consecutive days across from iPhoto 09 to my iPad 2? All the rest (>1000 frames mainly before and some after) go over, including some shot on the same digital camera (before and after). I've tried using 'all photos' and also manually selecting the events individually, they won't go. An album containing some of these photos goes across without them included, and converting the whole album on iPhoto to a movie and then dropping that into my videos won't go either. I've cleared the sync history as advised by the support line, and all software is updated. Loads of room on the iPad

    Started having the same issue with my iPad 2 just this week. Tried deleting the iPod Photo Cache, disabling then re-enabling photo sync through iTunes, but keep getting the error: "Some of your photos, including the photo “XXX.jpg”, were not copied to the iPad “XXX” because they cannot be displayed on your iPad." This is with iOS 4.3.5, iTunes 10.4, and Mac OS 10.7 Lion.
    Interestingly enough, I have no issues syncing the same exact set of photos to my iPhone 4 (also running 4.3.5). This seems to be an iPad-only issue.

    You can each have your own ID for your own iTunes accounts, but in order for a device to stream via AirPlay to the same Apple TV, everything must use the same homesharing ID. This is not the same as your iTunes account ID (although it can be for one of the devices)

    Well, you made a good start with SEO by getting rid of the iWeb default navigation since it doesn't help the spiders and, out there in the real world, there are more people than you would think with javascript turned off in their browsers.
    One of the downsides of iWeb is that it doesn't allow for the alt attribute in the img tag. Its well worth adding these to give you extra keywords even if you have captioned all your images. Use iWeb SEO Tool for this...

    iWeb, just like most drag and drop software, creates a huge amount of code which causes the pages to load slowly in the browser. Running you files through an optimizer will help to reduce this problem and further reduce the size of image files even beyond the initial optimization you do before loading them into iWeb...

  • When I print to pdf on Mac, the first page comes out fine but all the rest are magnified and shifted up and right

    I click File>Print. Whether I open pdf in Preview, save to pdf, or just print, I get this error. The first page is fine, but all the rest are shifted up and to the right and magnified.
    I've never been able to print out a multi-page document on Firefox with my new computer. I can copy/paste the address to Safari (gross) and it prints just fine, either to pdf or to a hard copy.
    Save me from having to use Safari!

    Making sure the fonts were embedded helped some, but it's still hit and miss. Sometimes I'm still missing pieces. One workaround I have found that works is just print one page without security to PDF, and then go back and replace the bad page(s) with them. So it will print properly, just not all the time. I have a copy of a word page and then what acrobat did to it. I just need to figure out how to post it here.

    Although not recommended, yes.
    Disable automatic syncing when the iPhone is connected with iTunes on each computer.
    The only item you will have selected for syncing with iTunes on your computer at work will be Calendars, which is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. Nothing else will be selected under the various tabs for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes on your computer at work. You will get a warning message that your iPhone is associated with another iTunes library on a different computer which you can ignore when syncing calendars/calendar events only with iTunes on your computer at work.

    Under normal circumstances, an uninstall/reinstall does not touch your content. That being said, it's still always a good idea to maintain a backup in case of disasters.

  • HELP!? Remove 1 page from long document and shift all the rest pages

    Hello,
    I am facing to following problem:
    I have a long document with facing pages. Now I need to remove one left page in the middle of the document and shift all the rest pages one step forward. It means from all right pages do a left and vice versa (started from the page that was removed). There is a continous text int the whole document and left/right strip made from different photos.
    To clarify the situation I am attaching the preview. I have deleted page no.12 and I need to shift page 13 to left, 14 to right after 13, 15 to left, 16 to right after 15 and so on....
    Is there any simple way how to do it?

    It looks to me as if you may something else going on here. Are you using right-to-left text here so the document binding would be onthe right when the book is closed? If not, your problem is not with page 13 so much as it is with the earlier pages.
    Unless you force it to do otherwise by disabling page shuffling someplace, in left-to-right documents using facing pages ID will always put odd numbered pages to the right of the spine and even to the left, the opposite for right-to-left documents. In either case, it seems like you have page shuffling disabled either for the whole file or for a selected spread. You can re-enable it from the menu in the Pages panel. When ID asks if you want to maintain the current number of pages on a spread you should probably say no. Either pages 1-12 will swtch sides, or 13 and following will, and your spreads will rearrange to put two pages together as they should be.
    If you  have overridden master page objects, a side effect of switching sides on the spread will be that the overridden objects will remain and the new master objects from the other side of the spread will appear behind them.

    You choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide ~/Pictures/ as the path(or elsewhere if you moved the library), and drag the library to a volume formatted as Mac OS Extended.

    By problems I mean:
    . The unability to sync music from your laptop/computer to your apple device
    . The slowness
    . Unable to log in
    . Being told that the laptop/computer being used isn't recognised
    . Clicking on music and it flicking through really quick without playing and then not playing after, but still being on apple device.
    + all the other problems i've seen mentioned on this page. It's pretty clear the new updates have glitches that urgently need fixing and a lot of people are encountering some or multiple of these problems.
    I've not seen or heard any announcement whether they know or not or if they're doing something to fix this, because they need to. Urgently.

    first of: you can edit previous posts in a time-frame of some minutes (haven't measured it ...).
    After that they become non-editable.
    I admit I have used microphones some years back with and without PCs (have switched to Macs 2.5 years ago).
    But I always had the mics connected to a mixing desk, which provided Phantom Power.
    Since I gave up my 'Singing Career' (wasn't good enough) I also abandoned the use of microphones.
    To your questions:
    It might be that PCs with specified Microphone-In ports are also providing power to them or the microphones themselves do not need any power.
    And the 'compatible with...' refers to the usage on computers in general.
    The iMic from Griffin works with OSX 10.5 (scroll down on the webpage to 'Product Compatibility' the left icon symbolizes OSX 10.5).
    As said above, I am no longer up-to-date in usage of microphones, but when you want to use a microphone with the standard connector you have to get either a microphone preamp or a mixer.
    If you use the mic only (really only) with your Mac Pro, you might wanna look for USB-connected mics from Samson or Audio Technica for example.
    And don't get upset, I understand you fully and any kind of 'insult' is for the manufacturers and not for me
