Apple Laserwriter 660 ps + updated iMac G3 DV 400 on OS 10.4

I've been helping a museum here in Sydney to get their lone G3 DV 400 up and running for their promo and advertising graphics work using Photoshop. The iMac is now running 10.4.4 with a Gig of ram and very happy and very quick (for a ten year old G3) but I've hit a bit of a brick wall with their printer. They were given an Apple Color LaserWriter 12/660 PS by the local uni and that is about the same age as the iMac but has not been used for 12-14 months. I have the three huge manuals and am grappling with them.
So far I have connected the printer via ethernet and a little adapter box, it is recognised and the printer prints its start-up page but when I try to print from the iMac I get a Printing Stopped message with no explanation - the display panel on the printer (it's huge) shows an icon lit that is identified in the manual as a warning that the photoconductor cartridge is wearing out - but it adds that you can continue until the print quality deteriorates - since the printer start-up page looks fine (although a bit dusty - I am going to vacuum the inside to get dirt and toner out) this should mean that the printer will continue to print but it doesn't. It just keeps on stopping. Anyone have any experience of these printers - it's pretty impressive!

I came to understand that this printer was past repair!

  • How to connect my perfectly-working 20-year-old Apple Personal Laserwriter 320 to my iMac running Mountain Lion?

How to connect my perfectly-working 20-year-old Apple Personal Laserwriter 320 to my iMac running Mountain Lion?
              Thank you, Morty S.

I have a perfectly-working LW 4/600 with exactly the same issue. They use localtalk - a long obsolete network connection, that doesn't connect to modern networks, and appletalk as the comm protocol.
I think the only choice you have is to use an old powerPC Mac as print server. You tell me which old Mac you have, with a localtalk connector, or that runs OS X 10.4 or earlier (so it speaks appletalk), and I'll tell you how I've done it for the past 11 years or so.
Right now I use a G4 running 10.4.11, plus an etherMac ethernet to localtalk adapter.
Before, I used a PMac 6100 running LPD server software.

  • HT3669 I have an imac running OS10.6.8 and an Apple laserwriter 16/600PS.  Is it possible to connect these directly without networking?  Where can I find the printer driver?

I have an imac running OS10.6.8 and an Apple laserwriter 16/600PS.  Is it possible to connect these directly without networking?  Where can I find the printer driver?

It turned out that WD is the big bad guy in this game.
According the data rescue company where I asked for an inspection, both of the drives had their reader head loose. And in the one, which was my already-in-use disk its even damaged the platters... xxxxx
So its time to pay bunch of money to recover, and take a walk to wd service to bang on the desk.
Also note - it may be somehow related to intellispeed technology - since macs not really friendly with wd-s built-in solutions.
On the other hand, with WD GP 1Tb there is no problems at all for ages.

I'm having this issue as well only with a little different twist I guess. I'm transferring the iWorks applications from my Macbook Pro 3,1 with Lion to a new MBP 10,1 running Mountain Lion. I transferred the apps over using DropCopy since the older MBP doesn't have AirPlay. Applications show up but crash upon opening. This is the first install so there are no previous plist, versions or such to delete. All three crashed upon opening every time until I just had to have Keynote and purchased again - although Apple agreed to refund that purchase since my previous version quit working. Any ideas since I don't have any previous plist/versions to delete? Thanks in adavnce for any help you can offer.

  • IMac DV and Apple Laserwriter 360

I have an old iMac DV (Lime Green) and even older Apple Laserwriter Select 360
Printer. I used to use the printer with a Performa. The Laserwriter works great. What is the best (easiest) way to hook up the printer to the iMac (if
    possible)?

Is that the printer that connects over LocalTalk cables?
If so, you can get an Ethernet to LocalTalk bridge. Here's an article about it.
    http://lowendmac.com/network/bridge.shtml
My father had one of those old Apple printers (not sure if it was the same model). He was using the host Mac running bridge software method. I found a used AsanteTalk on eBay so that he didn't have to fire up the old Mac just to print. It works; he can print from a Mac running Mac OS X to the old printer over the bridge.

  • Apple Laserwriter 8500 driver for OS 10.4.7

I have just upgraded to OS 10.4.7. Once the upgrade was complete I could no longer access the laserwriter. Apple Tech Support informed me that the Apple OS no longer supports the Apple Laserwriter 8500. So the new OS no longer has a driver for this laserwriter.
I was wondering if anyone has created a workaround for this problem.

    20" imac G5 (isight)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)
    20" imac G5 (isight)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The problem isn't your version of OS-X, it's that you have an Intel Mac. Download the Ozonic Intel update from M-Audio. I had the same issue with my iMac not reading my Ozonic. It's a simple fix. Good luck!

  • Managing multiple iOS devices on different Apple accounts from the same iMac

May be a very simple question to answer, but can I manage multiple iOS devices on different Apple accounts from the same iMac?
I ask as whilst I'm totally Mac'd, my partner who has her own Apple account has a Winows laptop and experiences problems updating iOS software on her iPhone 4S and iPad 3 Gen via the laptop. I'm thinking the problems may be overcome if we manage her iOS devices through my iMac.

Thanks dwb .... I thought there'd be a catch .... not to keen on all that media and apps on my iMac!
The specific problem is that whenever she updates to the latsest version of iOS using the latest iTunes for Windows on her PC laptop she seems to lose something in the process. One time she lost all her texts and the other day when updating to 5.1.1 she lost all her reminders. Not the end of the world but frustrating and shouldn't really happen and doesn't happen to me using the iMac and OSX.

  • Newbie needs help trying to update iMac from OS X v10.6.8

Newbie trying to update iMac as far as it will go without having to purchase a new one yet.  Can I update from OS X v10.6.8 to OS X 10.7 with the following specs: Intel Core 2 Duo;  Processor Speed 2.66 GHz; Processors: 1; Cores: 2; L2 Cache: 6 MB;  Memory: 2 GB;  Macintosh HD: 63 items with 228.18 GB available?

    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?

  • I can't play the downloaded iTunes movie on my newly updated iMac to OS X Maverick. Why not? And How can I get it to work? Thanks.

I can't play the downloaded iTunes movie on my newly updated iMac to OS X Maverick. Why not? And How can I get it to work? Thanks.

Do you get any error message?
What actually happens when you open it?
What app are you trying to play the files inside? Try iTunes.
I assume these files have DRM from the iTunes store. The Mac needs to be authorized to play them, open iTunes & select Authorize in the store menu, then sign in with the Apple ID that purchased the files.
Select the iTem in iTunes & get info on it (from the File menu) & you can see the account name that it belongs to.

  • Apple and ATI aware of iMac freezing issue

Now they just need to figure out how to fix it.
Here is a post from today by one of the Blizzard mac techs on the Mac Support forum of the World of Warcraft forums:
There are at least two sides to customer support.
One is, identifying issues that need to be fixed. In this case (ATI
driver bug) that task is done. ATI and Apple are aware of the issue and
working on it, I confirmed that with them today.
Two is, finding a way to provide short term relief of the issue if at
    all possible.
Since we can't make a driver update appear in seconds, bear with us if
we make suggestions that may in fact improve stability for you until a
    more lasting fix is available.
    "

    wawalulu,
If you can wait a few weeks for Apple and ATI to sort out the graphics driver problems, that might be your best bet. With any new model it does take Apple a couple months to iron out the glitches so when this happens, you will have a pretty solid Mac.
I work supporting both Macs and PC's where the user base is in the thousands and I will tell you on the whole, Macs are definitely more trouble-free than PC's. However, I won't candy coat things like some of the posters on this forum. There WILL be issues that will crop up but usually Apple does the right thing and fixes them. Sending feedback and patience is the key. When the new Leopard OS (10.5) comes out this month, I guarantee there will be issues due to it's newness and lack of maturity. However, if Apple's past track record is any indication, it shouldn't have anywhere near the issues Windows Vista has. We won't even support Vista where I work because it's so troublesome!
BTW, my 20" late 2006 iMac I use at work has been rock solid. This is because it's a revised version of the original intel iMac Apple released so most of the bugs were worked out. The G5 tower I had before that was perfect as well as the G4 and G3 towers I used before that. All of these Macs were at least second revision of their respective model lines. If memory serves, all of them has some teething pains in their first revisions.
I have a new 20" aluminum iMac at home, breaking my cardinal rule to never buy the first revision of a new product and it does have the graphics freezing issue talked about in these threads but it's only happened twice. So, I knew full well what I was getting into and am patiently waiting for Apple to release an update and fix the issue. Why did it have to be so... darn... sexy?!
I'll end this post on the following note: I use Macs at home precisely because I don't want to spend time fixing things... because I do that all day at work! If there was a better computer and OS out there, I'd be using it!
