Apple Mail 3.2, Leopard Defaults to SSL on Outgoing SMTP

I have just confirmed that when you go through the initial setup of a POP account in Apple Mail in Leopard it defaults to SSL turned ON in the SMTP (Outgoing) settings. In my case where my ISP doesn't use SSL for outgoing, this results in failure of Mail's test connection. Then you need to go into Mail -> Preferences -> Accounts -> Account Information -> Edit Server List (SMTP) and uncheck SSL and then put in the proper SMTP port number (usually 25).
Is there away to change this default behavior in Leopard Mail?
Thanks,
Eric

Same problem. The following information is from Symantec:
To disable SSL\TLS
Open Apple Mail.
Click the Mail menu and select Preferences.
Select your mail account on the left under Accounts, then click the Advanced tab.
Confirm the check box labeled "use SSL" is not checked next to ports. If necessary remove the checkmark.
Click the Account Information tab and select Edit Server list from the drop down next to Outgoing Mail Server.
Click the Advanced tab and confirm there is not a checkmark next to Use Secure Socket Layer(SSL).
Click OK and close the accounts. Window and choose to save.
Click Save to update your settings.
Restart Apple Mail.
This does work for a while but eventually Mail reverts to enabling Use SSL and disabling Allow Insecure Authentication but only one some of my addresses but not all. Some accounts POP logs-in but not SMTP.

  • Apple Mail on Snow Leopard 1.6.8

I'm aware this subject isn't new but still I find no solutions ....
Hence, very many thanks to anyone who will help me to solve this substantial problem
Since the unfortunate invention of Icloud my Apple Mail on Snow Leopard 1.6.8 no longer work properly.
    My machine:
    Model Name:          Mac Pro
    Model Identifier:          MacPro4,1
    Processor Name:          Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed:          3,32 GHz
    RAM 16 GB (Apple Original)
Mail should take care of my me.com accounts, but I also have other accounts located elsewhere with a different suffix (.it, co.uk)
I tried to set up Snow Leopard Mail following every single help tread here and at other websites. None of which seems to work properly, and the variety of "helps" simply tells me there is no "sound" system to use Snow Leopard with the current Apple Email set-up.
Yet "randomly" Mail will stop loading my "me.com" mail opening an error message telling me the "me.com" certificate is no longer trustable.ù
I instructed Apple Mail to "trust" the certificate, but this option does not work, or at least only works randomly.
Mails also never recognizes and loads messages from my other suffix adresses. It enters in an endless connection asking to verify either my User or pass, to finally put these accounts offline. Using Safari with my user and pass (the same as in Apple Mail) everythings works well.
More: if I am working on something else (Long Photoshop Actions, Final Cut Pro rendering and more), this window message halts everything.
This problem is serious, as I usually performed this work at night. or when I don't need to stare at a screen doing nothing.
I erased my computer with the 32 zero pass options and reinstalled the original Snow Leo system (MAC OS X 10.6.2) and this problem vanishes.
As soon as I update with the Combo Upgrade the problem begins again.
My upgrades are always "fresh updates" both as a direct update from the apple menu/Software update, or downloading the combo as dmg to then install.
The result is exactly the same.
I received a fresh copy from the local Apple Store in case my original had some magical problems, but nothing changed.
Yet I can't simply use SL 10.6.2 (the original software I got with the Machine) as many programs I paid for require the latest Snow Leopard.
While I could use another drive with SL 10.6.2, just for the Mail, is really a problem to reboot, to reboot again to continue my work.
In my heart I certainly believe email these days is a "public service" especially after paying thousand dollars over the years, and Apple policy to force user to purchase their latest machines and or, waste time to reconstruct their previous work to adpat it to their industrial policy is simply not fair.
While I understand and support advances in technology and so on, I believe this going forward shouldn't be done at the expenses of the customers, but "freedom of choice" is parts of all constitution as introduced centuries ago in the US.
I read in various site Apple was planning a Snow Leopard 10.6.9 version, but so far nothing happened. Maybe this project was dismissed.
Loosing important emails is a superior problem for my work.
I "have" to use Snow Leopard because I need the Rosetta function Apple discontinued in Lion and Mountain Lion.
Some readers might dislike this post, yet I used Apple since Apple II, I bought at least 100 machines since, I went through the various software/hardware changes, with ease. I believe my current anger is legitimate.
    Can someone please help?

you can save a little time - since Mail is one of the Optional Install items found by running the same-named installer within the folder on the DVD. you'll still need the 10.6.7 combo afterwards.

  • Set up gmail account in Apple mail and it only defaults to Pop.  How can I get it to allow me IMAP?

I have multiple gmail accounts.  Just set up a new one and configured it exactly as I have the others in gmail (enabling IMAP).  But when I set it up in Apple Mail, it automatically sets it up as a Pop account.  I cannot find a way to set it up manually...there is no check box that I can find to do this in the set up window.  I have repeated the steps several times and it always defaults to Pop.  So...how can I set it up as an IMAP account?

Got it...have to hold 'Option' button down after putting in name and password and it changes to 'Continue'.

  • Apple Mail is using Wrong default Email

Apple Mail is now displaying the wrong default email address in my inbox and I have my correct business email selected as my default.  I can't figure out how to correct it or why it is happening.  For example the mail in this inbox is sent to my petersonsales.net email, but it is displaying as if sent to an alternate address used for ministry:
It appears my ID is set to my company, and I'm not sure I did this either... just things are a little wonky with Yosemite...

I don't think you understand...  The outgoing servers are set correctly, and even the ID appears correct when you click on the incoming mail name, but it is appearing as a different email address in the list TO field.  See attached

  • Apple Mail 6.3 auto defaulting to courier font

OS - 10.8.3 ----  I am using a gmail adress sending/recieving through Apple Mail 6.3.  My preferences are all set to Arial 11, however when opejn by the recipient all the text in the message is converted to courier 13.  It really does not look good.  In terms of electronic firtst impressions, it is not going to work out very well. Thnak you very much for any thougts.

The font substitution is probably happening on the recepient's computer.
I suggest you try Arial 12, it's a more common typeface, so it may not generate font substitution at the other end.

  • Apple Mail.app in Leopard removes HTML formatting

    Hi,
This is not something I see universally, but in many of my mails (Exchange account, company ID, hence, can't post screenshots), sometimes, Mail.app strips the html formatting! Sometimes, something as simple as a table is missing. All I see is the text that would have been inside it. The background colours, etc in certain mails also sometimes go missing.
Only when someone replies to the same mail and has the original mail included, do I see the formatting!
Also, when I open my mailbox in Thunderbird or a browser, I can see the formatting correctly in the same mail!
    Am I missing something here?
    Thanks,
    Anup

    Mail > Preferences > Composing.
You have the option there to send and receive in plain text which will remove all formatting, maybe selected...Change to what you wish to happen

  • How to force apple mail to use my default address

    Hi,
I have three email addresses set up in Mail.
I want to switch to only one, and to continue to receive emails from the others.
So I would like to be able to send all my emails from ONE address, without having the choice.
Is there a way to set it up ?
    Thx

I don't see any way to do this when replying to a message. The preference setting is only for composing new emails. I hadn't seen a preference to set for replying to messages.
You may be able to do this by changing the outgoing server setting for the other accounts to use only the outgoing server for the account you want to send from. It depends on your provider whether it will work or not. If all your accounts are from the same provider, it probably won't work. But if they are different, the server may change and show the address from the account as the server is listed as, even though you didn't send from that account.
I know when I would use my gmail server to send a message from my ATT account, the sender would receive it as showing sent from gmail instead of ATT.

  • HT4759 What ((null)) mean on the top of my Apple Mail?

Does anybody know what ((null)) mean on the top of my Apple Mail? Has something to do with the outgoing smtp server...but what does it mean? Thanks in advance. Joeri

    1. Try doing a reset(no data will be lost):
Disconnect the iPhone from any computer. Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/wake button simultaneously for about 15 seconds and release when the Apple logo appears. Given your information, I suspect this won't work but try it anyway.
    2. If that doesn't solve the issue, backup the device and restore it as new to isolate the issue to hardware failure.
    In that case, use: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
NB: set up as a NEW device because a software issue will be in the backup. If the issue persists after restoring as new, you should offer the device for service.
If you get specific error messages/codes in iTunes when updating/restoring, check this: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694 for causes and solutions
    Good luck

  • How do I set apple mail to default to firefox?

Before switching from Safari to Firefox, links in apple mail (v1.3.11) e-mails would default to Safari for opening. After changing to Firefox as my preferred browser, now apple mail defaults to IE 5.2 to open links in e-mails. I can't find anything in apple mail to set a default browser to open links, nor can I find anything in Firefox to set a default e-mail app.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu, click on the General icon in the toolbar, set the default browser to Firefox in the drop down menu, quit Safari.

  • Upgraded to Lion, now Apple Mail no longer sends via SMTP to GMAIL

Greetings! First and foremost, THANK YOU for reading this discussion.  I truly appreciate any and all assistance. Being one who likes to exhaust all resources before posting, I have literally spent that last 7 and a half hours reading pages and pages of threads here, on Google Forums along with finding other data across the net.
The problem started immediately upon the LION upgrade.   Everything worked fine until the upgrade and then BOOM...no more Apple Mail sending to Gmail SMTP server.  I can receive Gmail just fine, but no can send. When a message is sent, after a long while, an error message pops up stating that the SMTP server is "off line."  Obviously it is timing out.
I have confirmed the settings in Preferences.  I have cleaned the hard drive (running the internal First Aid app).  I confirmed the password was correct in KeyChain.  I have tried a lot of corrective methods as stated in the threads.
I have tried using different ports (25, 465, 587).  I have set the connection from smtp.gmail.com to actual IP addresses including the following:
    209.85.227.109
    74.125.91.109
    74.125.39.16
    74.125.157.109
    74.125.113.109
    173.194.68.109
I tried it with and without TLS/SSL enabled.
    With authentication and without.
I even tried to telnet from the Mac to smtp.gmail.com without success.  (I can telnet from a Windows machine though...OUCH)
I am NOT running LION OS X server, just plain old LION OS 10.8.2 on my MacBrook Pro.
Thank you in advance for any and all courtesies extended.  Looking to resume using Apple Mail with my Gmail account ASAP.
    Sincerely,
    MWG2

Thanks Lanny...tried it...still doesn't work.  Called Apple Support...switched to Tier 2 support person Chris P. Was on the phone with him for 2 hours and 38 minutes...we tried everything under the sun...still can't get to smtp.gmail.com...can't even telnet to it from Mac.  We did network testing too...he thought my router was blocking ports 25, 465 & 587 but the router wasn't. After exhausting every concievable MAC setting, trying a number or solutions, killing the account and re-installing multiple times, his conclusion is that there is a third party software "blocking" the send in gmail...ummmmm...makes no sense to me as everything worked perfectly until I upgraded to OS X. Hence his solution is for me to take my Mac to the Apple Store and have them look at it.  My solution?  Don't use mail on the Mac and keep using Mail on my Windows machine.  I prefer Mac, but I have now spent over the last two days in excess of 10 hours on this problem...it's not supposed to be this difficult. Lesson Learned...if something's working, DON'T goof with it...Apple Mail under Snow Leopard worked perfectly...upgraded to Mt. LION (paid for it) and now I am really paying the price for doing that.

  • Apple mail can send through gmail, but thunderbird cannot

I have apple mail setup and working both with a POP3 account and gmail. I installed Thunderbird. It works fine with POP3 both send and receive. Gmail not so good. I can receive emails but not send. I setup outgoing smtp as: smtp.gmail.com; tried ports 25, 465, and 587; authentication method is normal password; connection security is SSL/TLS.
This can't be a network issue if apple mail works right? I did notice apple mail is set to default (25, 465, 587) and I am guessing it will try all three.
I followed the troubleshooting page, I cannot telnet to port 25 but I get responses from 465 (connection refused by smtp.gmail.com) and 587 (appears to log in or something).
    So, what is wrong?
    my system:
    Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.9; rv:24.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/24.3.0
    Application Build ID 20140131124303

Do you get any detailed error message information?
Google's online help page ([https://support.google.com/mail/troubleshooter/1668960]) lists these settings for the outgoing mail server:
    Server: smtp.gmail.com
    Use Authentication: Yes
Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587 ''(I think this is preferred)''
    Port for SSL: 465
For your account name (user name) you need to include the @gmail.com part (this various from service to service).
