Apple raid ip address assignment...??
I have an apple Xserve with ip address of ::
ip address :: 192.168.1.xxx.
subnet mask :: 255.255.255.0
router :: 192.168.1.1
It is connected on en0 port. I have then attached my apple RAID to the other ethernet port en1. In network pref on the server it shows up as active and self assigned. The Raid ethernet connection shows up with
ip address :: 169.254..68.212
subnet mask :: 255.255.0.0
router :: NA
I have read through other threads and it seems to use RAID admin I need to be on the same subnet mask. How do I do get the RAID on the correct subnet mask and give it an appropriate ip address.
I need to keep the server on 192.168.1.xxx
Much Thanks in advance
Power off the the XServe Raid. Attach network cables to the Ethernet management ports on the controller(s). Plug the network cable(s) into a switch port(s), -obtain a switch if you don't have one, attach the switch to your network. Power on the XServe Raid. Read the manuals:

I have an Apple RAID attached to a Dual-Core Intel Xeon running 10.4.11
I want to move this to another server, a Quad-Core Intel Xeon running 10.5.8
The RAID is connected by two Fiber Channels. So if I just move it to the new system, Have mount points created and bring up the system. Will it recognize the RAID and see it like on the first one? Is there any new configuration I need to do on the new system?
Thanks.
Pat.Hi
+"Will it recognize the RAID and see it like on the first one?"+
It should do.
+"Is there any new configuration I need to do on the new system?"+
That depends on how you're connecting to the XServe RAID? If you're connecting it via the on-board NIC to the secondary NIC on your server then configure it accordingly. If you're connecting it to the network and it has an appropriately assigned (static) IP address or if it's simply getting an address dynamically, no not really.
What I would do is unshare current share points on existing server. Use RAID Admin to shut the XServe RAID down. Disconnect it. Move it (if it's being moved) to the new location. Connect it up and switch it on. It should appear on the new server's desktop. Define your shares and test. That should be it?

Apple Raid Card panic on Mac Pro Early 2008 after installing SSD as an enhanced JBOD.
I recently installed a SSD drive in my Mac Pro to replace an aging, original boot drive. I have an Apple raid card with 3 other hds attached - all in an enhanced JBOD configuration. After installing the SSD from OWC (3G Electra SATA II Compatible) everything appeared to work fine. But after 36 hours I received a apple raid card kernel panic alert. See below for diagnostic crash log. OWC support says that their drive should work fine - now I am not so sure. Anyone out there with suggestions/solutions is most welcomed.

1) Apple brand cards,
2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
1) Apple brand cards:
• Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
• Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
• NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
• NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
• SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
• EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
• running 10.8.3 or later AND
• don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
• can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards" -
2010 Mac Pro with Apple RAID card - "Drive carrier 00:03 removed"
I've got a 2010 Mac Pro with the Apple RAID card and 4 internal identical Seagate ST32000641AS 2TB drives inside.
I've never had a problem with the RAID card (either battery or in operation) except for one thing:
Almost every time I shut the machine down (which I try to do as rarely as possible), it keeps losing Drive 3, the spare.
(See RAID Utility event log snippet below.)
[I wish I could understand why this Apple RAID card keeps losing the spare across power-cycles/reboots, but I digress.]
So I just adopted it as the spare and it spawns the rebuild and many hours later, everything's fine again.
... until the last time I rebooted (Jan. 2nd).
After the usual "I lost the spare" message upon login, it began the rebuild.
But this time, about 11 1/2 hours later the rebuild stopped and RAID Utility reported "Drive carrier 00:03 removed".
Bay 3 is now missing in the Controller view.
I powered off the system last night, and left it off overnight. Today I took all the drives out, blew the dust off and reseated them.
Same thing. Drive 3 is still missing, and now the rebuild task aborted.
The drive bay location shouldn't matter, right? Can I swap the Bay 3 drive with the Bay 4 drive?
I figure one of two things would happen:
(1) It will report Bay 3 as being there but Bay 4 as being missing, same situation as is now. Meaning the problem is in the Bay 3 spare drive.
(2) It will report Bay 3 as being missing (despite a 'good' drive being present) and Bay 4 will be the (unattached) spare, and the RAID set will be unviable. Meaning the problem is with the drive bay itself, not whatever drive is plugged into it.
If "Drive carrier removed" is trying to tell me the disk is bad, why do I not see any log messages about it? I suppose a spare that never gets used could go bad from lack of use, but ... no messages at all?
Hesitant to plunk down $160 on a new spare disk if the present one isn't actually dead ...

I was talking about this.
This looks like a RAID 5 setup without the parity to me. I would said it basically a RAID 0.
Also you metioned "I guess that previous spare must really have gone 'bad', despite having never been used! "
I wiped everything out, I selected the 3 disks and clicked on "Create RAID Set" with RAID5 selected and the "Use unassigned drives as spares" option checked. The 3rd disk has always been marked as the spare ever since then. You do not have a choice to create a "RAID5 setup without the parity". If I wanted a RAID0 I would have chosen a RAID0! raidutil now says
% sudo raidutil list raidsetinfo
Total Avail
Raidsets Type Drives Size Size Comments
RS1 RAID 5 1,2,3,4 5.23TB 0.00MB No tasks running
Every time the system would 'lose' Drive 3 on boot, I would just keep rebooting until it was 'found', and then manually re-assign the now-'floating' drive as the spare - and the RAID would rebuild.
There was never a problem until the day that prompted this post - when it would not find Drive 3 no matter what I did. I turned the Mac Pro off for several hours until the drives had all cooled down and it still did not find the drive. I left the machine on but unmounted the degraded volume until I got the new replacement drive.
I really don't understand what you are getting at. It's like you are trying to tell me I set it up as a 4-drive RAID5 with no parity(!) and that I was in grave danger because one of the disks was gone. The actual RAID contents (spread across Drives 1, 2 and 4) were never in danger, unless a 2nd disk had failed while the spare was not seen by the Apple RAID card. I wasn't too worried about that happening. -
T40 Wireless Issue - No IP Address Assigned
I am using a T40 in wireless mode and am unable to get automatic assignment of the IP address. Connection to the wireless access point is confirmed but there is no internet connectivity because the IP address assignment is not being completed. The wireless network is working because I have a second laptop which attaches with no issues. This laptop was working but my son was visiting over the holidays and he could not get his laptop to linkup. To make a long story short some wireless setup adjustments were made to my unit to try to determine the problem with his. I don't know what they were. Now neither laptop works. I am confident this is a setup issue but I can't seem to find the setup adjustment that needs to be made. Does anyone have some ideas where I can start?
Hi Dsnyder5516,
Welcome to the forum!
I suggest using System Restore in Windows to the point where your wireless was working fine.
I hope it helps.

AppleRAID Card Raid & JBOD Drive Assignment
Hi,
I have 2 MacPros, both with Apple RAID Cards with 4 drives each set up as RAID 5 with a spare drive in each set. I had one loose a drive. I replaced the drive and it appears the RAID rebuilt itself, as it should. However, I have a question because there is an anomaly there.
One one system that never had a drive go bad lists the “spare drive” in RAID utility with the designation “Local Spare for RAID Set “---”. (---= RS1 or some such name).
On the system that had the failure and replacement the disk shows up as JBOD.
All other disks show up as “Assigned.”
So my question is do I select the JBOD disk and then select the “Make Spare Command?”
Or do I just let it be as it is? Is it working as it should? How can I test this or get more information. RAID Utility is a very spartan application. Apple information on this configuration is not available, or I cannot seem to find it.
Thanks in advance, and so long for now, TOMHi
+"So my question is do I select the JBOD disk and then select the “Make Spare Command?”+
Yes.

MacPro2009-Apple Raid Card-2.2TB limit
Hello,
I have a MacPro (early 2009) with an Apple Raid Card. Lion 10.7.4
I just bought a 4 Tb Sata hard drive and there is no way to make it work on the Apple Raid Card. When it mount , it only show a capacity of 2,2 TB and Apple disk Utility is of no utility with it on the Raid Card.
So I managed to hook it in the Optical Drive bay and I have now a 4 TB volume available for Network backup.
Can you confirm the limit on the Apple raid card
Version Matériel: 2,00
Version du programme interne: E-1.3.2.0
Thanks,
Marc LE BRETI have this same issue with a mid 2010 MacPro Server running 10.8.2/OS X Server (10.8) and the Apple RAID Card with 3 - 1TB drives and an added 4TB drive (in Bay 4) that is only being seen with the 2.2TB limit. I even initialized it and tested it a bit with my MacPro1,1 and a NewerTech toaster on eSata. Very nice to see a workaround with the optical bay... thank you for that suggestion! I was going to go to another enclosure or hard drive "toaster" / dock that allows 4TB drives and use eSata or FW800 as a connection... the 2nd optical drive bay sounds great and will give it a try.
The only thing I can figure from all this and talking to Tier 2 AppleCare is that the RAID card is only 32 Bit addressing O.o ... which seems crazy but makes the most sense. They will more than likely respond with "The drive is unsupported, since it isnt an "Apple" HD." -
Apple Raid Card: Raid-1 volume degrading
Hello,
I have 2 Raid-1 volumes running on a late 2009 mac pro with an Apple raid card. The second Raid volume has degraded now 3 times in the last 2 1/2 weeks. Raid utility is saying that the drive is damaged but when I shutdown, pull the drive out of the bay and push it back in and then restart it says that the drive is good. After assigning it as a spare the Volume rebuilds and lasts about a week until the same thing starts all over again. Perhaps the drive is somehow damaged but it seems more like a connection problem. If this is a familar issue to anyone and someone has a suggestion it would be greatly appreciated.Maybe you need to do a full surface scan for bad or weak failing sectors.
Next time it drops out (or whenever you decide to remove it manually).
Use Disk Utility to Initialize with Write Zeroes option. This takes several hours.
If it completes without any error messages at all, it should then be good to use.
If Bad Blocks are found, they will generally be spared out by this process, and the drive can be good to use for a while, but is likely to fail within 6 months. You should consider moving it to light-duty or occasional use, such as backups.
Sometimes the Initialization will fail. If the drive is still under warranty, return it to the manufacturer for a refund/replacement. Original Apple drives have a one-year warranty, same as your Mac. Manufacturer warranties are often (but not always) 3 years or more. -
Why a Apple RAID controller card cannot delete a RAID set?
Hi,
I just have a problem with my RAID set created with RAID Utility. My configuration is as follows:
Mac Pro (early 2009 model) 2 x 2.66GHx Quad-Core, 16GB DDR3 1066Mhz Memory
Apple RAID Card (HW Ver 2.00 and FW Ver E-1.3.20)
1 x 1TB HD (Apple original) in Bay 1 as boot disk configured as Enhanced JBOD
3 x 2TB HD (WD black series RE) in Bay 2 to Bay 4 configured as RAID 5
Mac OS 10.7.4
The RAID Utility showed the following messages:
Degraded RAID set RS2 - No spare available for rebuild
Degraded RAID set RS2 - No spare available for rebuild
Degraded RAID set RS2
Drive 3:50014ee20352f5e8 missing - Previous drive status was inuse
Drive 3:50014ee20352f5e8 failure detected - Primary disk port unusable, previous drive status was inuse
Furthermore, RAID Utility shows:
1) Bay 1 (RS1 boot drive): Assigned, verified, Status good. viable (good)
2) Bay 2 (RS2 RAID 5): Assigned, verified, Status good, viable (degraded)
3) Bay 3 (RS2 RAID 5): Roaming, verified, Status good
4) Bay 4 (RS2 RAID 5): Assigned, verified, Status good, viable (degraded)
It also showed "Severe Events" message: "Degraded RAID set RS2 - No spare available for rebuild."
I tried to delete the RAID set using Apple RAID Utility but nothing happened. Can anyone help as I have to rebuild the RAID set from scratch? Thanks.Hi flognoth,

I have swapped the drives in bays and it is always bay 2. I'm coming to the conclusion that either the RAID card is failing in bay 2 or there is a Lion / Mountain Lion issue with the RAID card.
I would say this is not "a Lion / Mountain Lion issue with the RAID card", as I have an "Early 2009 Mac Pro" that is running Snow Leopard (10.6.8), fully patched, that is exhibiting a similar issue, after about 4 years of no such problems.
My RAID configuration is just like yours: 4x 2TB drives, with Bays 1 & 2 as RAID 1 and Bays 3 & 4 also as RAID 1. I keep losing either Bay 1 or Bay 2 disk, and after reboot typically see it as a good disk, in the green, but now unassigned to a RAID set, and marked as "Roaming". When I assign it as a spare, so far the RS1 RAID Set begins to rebuild, and things are okay for a short while.
Initially this happened about once a month, starting about 3 months ago, now it is a weekly or several times weekly event.
I've put in new disks (several), restored from a Time Machine backup, and just came in today to find the Bay 2 disk "Roaming".....
I'm going to try a new Mac Pro RAID card, as I have a spare - just looking for information about whether the replacement RAID card will pick up the RAID sets from info cached on the disks (I hope!), or whether I have to newly create the RAID Sets & Volumes, and then re-populate from Time Machine / the old disks.
I will say that I've been running 8 "Early 2008 Mac Pro" computers with RAID cards, each configured as above, and 4 "Early 2009 Mac Pro" computers similarly configured. These were all deployed between late 2008 and the beginning of 2010. I've had little difficulty with them, and they've been wonderful when an actual disk failure has occurred. I've had about 6 actual disk failures among all these setups.
cheers! -
New drives help for APPLE RAID Card RAID Redo
Hi,
I've been happily using an Apple 3,1 MacPro with Apple RAID Card installed and connected to 4-500 GB Apple OEM drives. I'd like to redo my setup and replace the Apple drives with bigger drives. Someone said I could only use up to 2 TB drives - is this correct?
Has anyone done this or anything like it using Seagate Drives that are not Apple OEM. Will that work OK or will the Apple RAID Card want to see Apple OEM drives? Apple sells 2TB Seagates, but they cost a lot compared to non-OEM drives, but will cheaper generic Seagate Barracuddas work OK in every way?
Also, after accomplishing this upgrade, I'd like to upgrade this machine to the latest Lion and possibly even Moutain Lion System Software. Any issues perceived?
To reiterate, I'd like to increase my storage to the max in my Early 2008 MacPro3,1 which has the Apple RAID Card utilizing a RAID5. This is spec'd at "4 - 3.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA) controllers" but no mention is made of what the MAX Size drives that will be addressed by the RAID Card.
Thanks, and so long for now, TOMI thought it was an oxymoron to be using Apple RAID card, and to be happy.
It does not support drives larger than 2.2TB
Seagate's just seem to be more trouble. Any enterprise drive should do.
If you really really need RAID5 then maybe this card is useful, otherwise, no.,
There is much less than 300MB/sec x 4 in bandwith, they are shared and not independent, but the total is more like 800MB/sec maximum. Less overhead and other factors comes in more like 700MB/sec total max. \
SSDs have come a long way.
Use a PCIe cards to manage 2 x SSDs of 500GB up to 1TB
Use Disk Utility or SoftRAID 4 to manage 2-4 drive mirror or stripe arrays
10.8.4 has a bug that interferes with using 3TB and larger drives, just introduced bug.
This is the FIRST time there have been limits on drive size. And Apple RAID card. Seems the card is not getting updated firmware to address the need for larger drives. For those using SAS it is also a viable candidate.
SSD on its own to hold the system. 4 x 2TB WD Black for data and media storage. 4 x SSDs for scratch and graphic catalogues and media... all depends what your goal and use and type of programs.
No you do not need to use Apple's.
I cannot vouche for or seen someone doing so but I would hope that WD RED series would be suitable. -
When I received my iphone 4s 3 years ago the my apple id and icloud email addresses were the same, it was a student email from the college I attended. This account is no longer active, but when I changed my apple id email address to a current email (gmail account) the icloud address didn't change over. I now have no ability to sign into icloud on my phone and icloud hasn't been updated in nearly a year. I wanted to figure out this problem before I upgraded to the Iphone 6 this December. Is there any way this is possible?
Welcome to the Apple Community.
You should still be able to use your college email address, just log in with your details. -
I changed my Apple ID email address yesterday and now my IPhone 4 and my IPod 5 will not allow me to upload any apps. When it asks for my Apple Password it still shows my old email address. How do I change the IPhone and IPod to recognize the new email address????
Hello there, emsariel.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great information in regards to the issue you are describing:

Hi,
I will suggest to setup a sniffer capture with ACS and look for the attribute that ACS sends for IP Address Assignment, once you know the attribute apply it on the IAS.

How to set up a new apple e-mail address when already have an existing Apple ID
Hello
Thank you for taking a look at my query - I have searched many posts but not found a specific answer to my question - so please help!
My dilemma:
I am in effect running everything smoothly - I am already on iCloud and have an @me.com mail address.
The problem arises in that I need to change my name (due to a divorce) and hence my e-mail address - I would like to use my maiden name for obvious reasons!
So what have I tried?:
I have set up a new Apple ID using a 'hotmail' address, as you need an existing address to set an ID, but would actually like a new 'apple' address. How do I do this? Since I have registered all my devices (iMac, iPad 3 and iPhone 3GS) with iCloud already using my married name ID it seems I am unable to get another appleID? Is this true? Is there a way around this?
Concerns:
I have many communications with lawyers and ex and various other things I would like to keep on my existing apple ID/mail account (and also itunes etc) I still need to be able to access this information. I am happy to keep this apple ID active at the same time as having the new ID if this is possible on all the same devices? Currently however I do not know how to do this, i.e. run two mail accounts through iCloud OR ideally transfer my info to the new ID - however from reading around I believe this latter (logical) option may be impossible?
So:
... I need a knight (or maiden) in shining armour to help me understand my options, answer the Q's above and provide the steps I have to follow to do this as I am no IT guru! And as there are many similar Qs without a clear answer I'm sure you will gain lots of points!
Thanking you kindly in advance!
PS. Apple if you are reading this please can you do something about this situation as there seem to be many questions around this issue. Unfortunately divorce and name changes are a frequent part of life these days and it would be good if you can accommodate this!OK, so I realised I was still within my 90days of being able to get support from Apple due to recent iPad3 purchase.
So between what I have gleaned from this forum and what I have learnt from the support call here I hope is a comprehensive one stop shop answer to the question... "How do I get another Apple e-mail address ?" It's not straight forward but bear with me as you will get a result (also if anyone with IT prowess can offer further advice or clarification please do reply to this so we keep all info in the same place)... right - we shall begin:
First a few points to bear in mind/wise words that I wish I was aware of before:
You preferably do not want more than one Apple ID so that syncing etc is straight forward. SO create an e-mail address that you will be happy to have no matter what, whether you are married/divorced (and yes it unfortunately could happen...) etc...
So...
1. First go to www.myinfo.apple.com, change your country as required and click on manage your account. Log-in. Should go straight to your Name, ID and e-mail tab.
2. OK you are now presented with one of two scenarios....
a) If your AppleID and primary e-mail address is a me.com (or mac.com) then you are unlikely to have an edit option next to this line - follow point 3. Another ID has to be generated, and unfortunately (as Winston Churchill above rightly pointed out, the problem that you will have on the whole is that any purchases you make from the iTunes Store under your previous account, will be inaccessible on many of your devices. - IF however all you wanted is a new e-mail address and you are happy to keep running your old ID at the same time - there is a way around this .... read on to point 3)
b) If your AppleID and primary e-mail address is not a me.com (or mac.com) then - follow point 4. This is the better option to have, hop skip and jump with glee as you will in effect have the same ID account and syncing will not be an issue. But note that your new ID will not be editable going forward so head my words of wisdom above.
NB. If you already have more than one ID and one of the 'Apple ID and primary e-mail' is editable i.e. 2b) then choose this option to change as it is simpiler to manage.
3. OK lots of steps here and explanations:
i) You need to create another Apple ID - there are two ways of doing this a) if you go to your iphone or ipad settings > iCloud > delete your account (Don't worry you are effectively only signing out and not deleting) (you'll be given an option what to do with your contacts) > The page will then give you an option to create a new Apple ID.... follow the steps, and you will get a new me.com AppleID and primary e-mail address.
b) If you do not have an iphone or ipad - use your computer: Go to sytem preferences > icloud > sign out of account (again you will be given an option to keep contacts on the computer etc. do what is appropriate for you). An iCloud window should then pop up - and there is an option to 'Create an Apple ID'... follow the steps, in 2nd step (after date of birth input) go for the free iCloud option and do not use an existing e-mail address (e.g. hotmail or gmail)... as it then gets more complicated (I did go down this route as I didn't know any better - so I can explain if you wish to know - just ask) - continue with the steps and you will get a new me.com AppleID and primary e-mail address.
ii) Now assuming you have an itunes account and other devices... and you will want to sync everything across devices... then ensure you log back into your OLD account and use this as your main account on all devices. This will keep all things synced between devices with no problems.
iii) To get your new e-mail account active go to all your devices and computer and just add the new me.com address as another account:
a) on iphone and ipad: settings > mail, contacts, calendars > "add account"
b) on computer assuming you use mail: Mail>preferences>account information> hit the '+' under the left hand account box and fill in the details... You will then effectively have two mail boxes running in mail - your previous and new one. What I have noticed is that you can drag and drop (which will copy) mailboxes you created in your old account into your new account - which is great as you can keep the stored messages to hand and effectively you can taper down use of the old account (or use as you wish) over time and eventually not notice the old account is in the background.
Hey presto you have a new e-mail address AND your devices are syncing itunes, photostream etc...
4) So - much better option....
i) create a new Apple ID as per point 3i) above.
ii) go back to www.myinfo.apple.com, change your country as required and click on manage your account. Log-in with old ID. Under Apple ID and primary e-mail adress - click edit and now insert your new me.com Apple ID. This will now be both your ID and primary e-mail address. This is where my knowledge (gleaned from this Forum) stops on this option - as unfortunately it did not apply to me. But I think it will get you where you want!
Hope all this info helps rather than hinders!! It definitely would have helped me
Enjoy. -
I changed my apple id email address last week, not a problem I just entered the correct info on my 6 apple devices for FaceTime, AppStore and iTunes.
The issue now, is that I have changed my appleid password so that the kids couldn't install any apps and charge my credit card.
Now I am getting an icloud authorisation error, it is telling me that the account (old apple id) or password are incorrect.
What have I done and how can I fix it?
Do I have to 'delete account' on my iphone and add a new one? I have just paid for the max icloud storage plan as well.I FOUND THE SOLUTION!
I had the same exact problem. I had my old apple ID connected to a school email which did not exist anymore. My ipad was prompting me to put the password in for that ID and I could not delete it from my ipad because the "Find My Ipad" was turned on, once again prompting for password. I called apple and they said this Apple no longer exists and is not in there system, which I knew already. After hours on the phone nobody could help me. Try this.
-Go to create a new Apple ID and use the same email address as the old apple ID which is locked in on your ipad
-Create a new password and all that, it will say it send a verification link to your email, in my case my email no longer exists so I could not do this
- I called Apple to explain this problem and I asked if they could verify it for me, which they did after I convinced them it was worth a try. The guy told me that the verification shouldnt matter and should still be able to login but he did it anyway. You can try skipping this step but if it doesn't work then go ahead.
-Go to ICloud and click on your account, the email should be grayed out but it should allow you to change that password, put in the new password which you just created.
-This allowed me to sign in to accept the new terms and conditions but it said "unable to conncet to server" so I just backed out and went to "Delete Account" and it worked!
The whole idea is to re-create your old apple ID into Apple's system and then use that new password. The guy at Apple said tons of people called about this problem and nobody could solve it. I thanked him for helping me and he thanked me for helping him. I hope this helps you!
