Apple TV Overall Satisfaction?

I'm thinking about buying Apple TV, but after seeing all of the problems posted on this board, I'm having second thoughts. Do you guys think its worth the money? Has anyone compared it to Playstation 3 or know if PS3 is even compatible with mac?
I've been researching both and it seems like PS3 is quite a bit more bang for the buck, but haven't yet been able to confirm how compatible it is with Macs as far as iTunes and iPhoto goes. Any thoughts?

We got rid of our cable TV subscription about a year ago, and went solely with appletv. We no longer have any active tv subscriptions, and only rent or purchase stuff through appletv or netflix. For the amount of tv we watch, this ended up being about 30-40% cheaper over the year than paying the regular cable bill monthly (around $110 a month if I recall correctly with all the HD options ect).
The downside of this is if you are a sports fan, or like live shows, then you are out of luck with ATV.
We've been very happy with our ATV, regularly use it for renting, purchasing tv shows. We tend to watch our HD-content on our PS3, and never use the PS3 for renting or buying video content (strictly a blu-ray player).
Syncing has been pretty pain free, with the odd glitch (purchases not synced between the ATV and computer for example). Most problems are resolved by rebooting the ATV. I would say we have had perhaps 5 or 6 significant issues which were annoying in the year we have had it. These issues (mostly syncing) were all resolved in 30 min or less through reading on the net, implementing the recommended solution, or just rebooting the ATV.
Finally, blu-ray on the PS3 is noticeably better than the HD content available through itunes. Its not orders of magnitude, but noticeable. If you hunt around on the internet, you can find pictures of the same image in the different formats, but to really get an idea, you need to see them side by side, as so much of the quality is reflected in fluidity of motion etc.
We have rented some HD content through itunes when we couldnt be bothered waiting for the blu-ray title on netflix, but in general, we watch HD content via PS3.

  • CS6 Overall Satisfaction

What is your overall satisfaction level with Audition CS6? The disappearance of Microsoft XP makes it necessary for me to upgrade from Audition 1.5 which has served me well.
I'm told Adobe has re-integrated the CD burn capability that was missing from CS5 but I am concerned about the level and nature of tech support as indications are that this is still provided from offshore.
Your general thoughts would be appreciated.

    Newsguy777 wrote:
OK, to me, offshore is India or any other country where the techies' English language skills are marginal at best.
Well, being in the UK, I include all countries that aren't the UK in my definition of 'having marginal English skills'... (with the possible exception of Norway, where when they speak English, they speak it better than we do, for some reason.)
But I know what you mean. Personally, I've never called the chat-line. Ever. For 99.9% of things, the forum works miles better - and you get developers answering questions sometimes too. CC is better than CS6, and that's better than CS5.5, so things are only improving...
I haven't tried it, but on the face of it I can't see why Audition 1.5 wouldn't run under W7, at least. Gotta be worth a try, at any rate. W8 is to be avoided anyway, if at all possible.

  • Apple Tv Overall

hi, i would like to talk about the apple tv with people.  i am thinking of getting it for christmas for my family.  i am hoping anyone can explain to me if what i want to do is capable to any degree.  what i want to do is as follows:
it will be in my tv room next to the flatscreen tv that has hdmi.  it is my understanding that the box is wireless/wired, depends on preference.  it will have to be wireless because even though the router is in the next room, i dont have a long enough ethernet cord.  the device will be used by 4 people in all.  i am hoping that you can sighn in w/ multiple accounts not necisarily all at once.
i also have questions which are as follows:
    1) does the computer have to be on to do anything w/ the tv?
    2) if you dont sync w/ the cloud, if you sighn in on the device( assuming it works that way), what will appear, if anything?
    3) do you need the cloud for this to work?
i may have more questions but thats all i can think of right now.

Yes you can use wifi or ethernet.  Clearly wifi is prone to signal issues etc in some setups.  If you have that problem consider mains powerline adapters (eg Devolo, Belkin, Netgear).
iCloud is confusing people.  You don't need it.
You do not need to be signed up for iCloud to use things like Movies/TV Shows in the cloud if those features are available in your country - they are tied to your iTunes ID which can be separate to iCloud.
The only iCloud feature it currently has is Photostream for iPhone/iPad photos.
    Computer always on?
Not for most things - if you want to stream content across the local network from itunes on the computer (either iTunes Store purchases or compatible music/video eg CD rips, home movies converted to correct format) the computer needs to be on with iTunes running.
If you have iTunes 'in the cloud' for movies/TV Shows in your country you can stream prior purchases direct from the internet if they are still in the store or rent/buy new content direct on AppleTV with the computer off.
Music is an oddity you can't browse/buy it and for internet playback have to subscribe to itunes match.
    Content on AppleTVs?
With Computer on you can access your local itunes library under the Computers icon.
These are available in US with computer on or off:
    http://www.apple.com/appletv/whats-on/
Note - subscriptions will be required for several of these services (you may already have them).
    Multiple users?
AppleTV really assumes a single iTunes account and can't be configured with different logins.
It uses Home Sharing to link to itunes.
To Home Share with a different account you'd need to alter settings which can be a chore with the small remote.  Do you all have different iTunes accounts?

  • Apple TV Overall Opinion

I've had my Apple TV from the beginning release. With 6 months under my belt, I figured I'd give a performance report on it.
Honestly, I find myself not using it as much as the months go by. I did know the limitations when I bought it, except for the video shuffle, but, I figured it would be another cool Apple gadget.
Unfortunately, the only great thing about it is the Photo screen saver during music shuffle. I turned that on during parties and everyone loves it. Great sound, awesome picture detail. But, this I can get from hooking up my MacBook to the Plasma.
As for the video playback, some good, some not. I've used Handbrake for movies and Quicktime Pro for my videos. Must be the codec for the Apple TV.
However, the time, effort and experimenting can get cumbersome just to watch through the Apple TV.
It doesn't look good for an "awesome update" anytime soon. And really, it would need to be a really, really awesome update! So, cool idea, but a lot of effort. The ease of use of iTunes on this device would be great. I might take this off the main entertainment center and put it in the bedroom. I think I would have more use for it in the bedroom than in the main room.
Just my opinion, no harm, no foul.

I use it even more than I expected, and I expected to use it a lot when I got it.
Maybe it's because my HDTV only has component inputs and no HDMI/DVI, but for me the Apple TV is the best way to get quality video. Before getting it I was using a Mac mini with s-video. Okay, but not great. Now the Mac mini is my dedicated Apple TV server, and I use it with a Hybrid TV to record over-the-air HDTV. I then edit out the commercials and convert to Apple TV format, letting iTunes do all the rest. I get time-shifting and commercial-free TV which is so nice I don't even use my TiVo anymore. (And yes, I would happily buy the shows online without commercials if they were in HD format.)
I also subscribe to podcasts and watch them via the Apple TV. Once you start watching things on a 61" TV you stop even considering watching video on the computer display. With a dedicated server it's so easy to just let things run automatically and have the content on the Apple TV change as new stuff comes in.
The one thing missing that would make the Apple TV almost perfect for me is HD videos on iTunes. If and when that becomes available I will never buy another DVD. As it is I rarely watch them now because I have enough HD content to watch (I refuse to be a pawn in the Blu-ray/HD-DVD battle).
One other huge thing I've done with the Apple TV is use it for showing videos at events. It's like a portable theater projector. Just sync onto it what you want to show, disconnect and set up at the event. Completely bulletproof and instant access to all the videos. It is like the video version of an iPod, not meant to be in your pocket but portable enough to take to another location to watch videos.

  • Overall satisfaction with iTunes 10?

i hate to say it but im not really happy with the new itunes 10. im not sure if its gonna take some getting used to but i did enjoyed the colors. now it just seems all bland. anyone else agree?

A search of Discussions will yield numerous, very long, contentious threads on this issue. The furor has largely died down, though.

  • Complaining about Apple's service and getting results

I have been through **** and back (well not back yet) dealing with AppleCare to get my iMac repaired (3 weeks and counting...).  There's no point in my getting irate with the poor techs and customer reps that have no control over policy...how can I get in contact with a person that has some accountability for quality assurance and customer care to address grievances?

My confidence in Apple and my satisfaction with Apple products and services has been severely diminished recently due to a series of disappointments, misleading and deceptive advice, misleading and deceptive statements made on the web site, errors in effectively processing online purchases, and failed customer service.
This has been, and still is, a very unpleasant experience.
I am very disappointed with the Lion OS, Apple online store, ITunes purchase processing, new version of the MacTV and overall performance of the Time Machine / Time Capsule.
As an investor, I believe that this is a sign of what may be ahead.
I am loosing confidence. I believe that the growth and positive direction that Apple has experienced and enjoyed recently may not be sustained.
There are too many internal issues, failures and loss in customer service that will eventually overcome this positive period and change consumer sentiment.
I am only one person. I have had a terrible run of negative experiences that remain unsatisfied.

  • Is any one tired of buying apple products to have them die or become obsolete in 1 to 3 years? I have 2 Ipod touch 5 nanos 1 pad out of all 3 are useable. Batteries die or you can't upgrade to use them with new apps. BIG WASTE OF MONEY.

I have gone through so many apple products to have the battery go out in 1 year or become obsolete in 3 years. I don't believe new apps can't be made to work with older devices and batteries should last more than a year. At this point I feel it's like so much in our world to force us to buy new or use our 3 year old ipod touch as a glorified MP3 player. Some of us can't afford to replace our devices if your like me you expect to use Apple products for a long time that's why you purchase Apple. I bought a ipad so i wouldn't have to carry a laptop but if I want to download music or a book to my nano or ipod touch I can't and who want to take a walk carrying a ipad? Would it be so hard to make a cord to attach a nano to a pad so you can download stuff? What happened to making the consumer happy? Then you call to get answers and you get, sorry that's the way it is we can't help you. I have a box full of apple devices that aren't working or can't be upgraded, I just purchased a nano7 to replace my nano 4 ( the battery dead) this will be my last Apple product until they start standing behind there products like they use to. Far beyond not happy

I have two old ipod classics ( 6 and 7 years old), an ipod nano, the original iphone, iphone 3gs, iphone 4, iphone 4s and an iphone 5.  All still work just fine.
    You may be the exception.

  • Will apple make downgrade to IOS 5.1 available, IOS 6 too buggy to tolerate?

An option to reload IOS 5.1 should be made available if Apple wants customer satisfaction. IOS 6 is not stable enough. Apps crashing, wifi problems, battery life, oh yeah no satellite view in weather apps purchased. Not to mention how bad the new maps are! Come on Apple throw us a bone!

iOS 6 works perfectly fine for me.
    Regarding your maps issue,
Apple is constantly working on improving their new Maps service, but until it reaches the level of finesse necessary to be usable, take a look at some alternatives.
If you would like to send a suggestion to Apple, please go to http://www.apple.com/feedback or you can Report a Problem via the Maps app by tapping the bottom right.
Bing Maps offers a very good maps service with Bird's Eye, a feature similar to Flyover. It's arguably better than Google Maps.

  • Apple IDs and icloud

Hi I have now updated all apple gadgets to allow icoud etc. I am one of the unlucky ones who has an Apple ID as I have a dot.me account and a separate Apple ID for Itunes... ( I know its my fault as i was one of the bad people who apple products before they became so popular!)
My problem, my iphone4 has now the dot.me apple ID overall and the itunes apple id for store... all OK it seems... however my ipad has the dot.me ID for its main ID, yet when I try and put the itunes apple ID into my IPad, it tells me this ID isnt an Apple ID and needs verification... I have used this ID for years on itunes , and its the ID I am using here!!!
    Any help please?
PS .A little tip apple, before launching these things allow us early adopters to merge Apple IDs!

Apple does not allow merging of accounts >  Frequently Asked Questions About Apple ID
I have an apple ID that I have used for years for my itunes. Then I got a me.com account, with another Apple ID.

  • Comparing the iphone to the iphone4.

Looking to buy one, but questioning which is better? Even though the 4 is more new, is it worth it? Because they're both going to have problems...

There are 4 iphone generations. Which two are you comparing? Iphone 4 and 3gs? Iphone 4 and iphone 3g? Iphone 4 and Original iphone?
They do not all have the same features or run the same software.
Why are they both going to have problems?
I have had the original iphone - never had a problem - replace with the iphone 3gs after two years. My wife used it for another year without issue.
I got an iphone 4 last year without issue. My wife has the 3gs without issue for almost 2 years now.
    Most never have any problems.
The iphone has been top of the customer satisfaction rankings for 5 years running.
"For the fifth year running Apple’s iPhone dominated JD Powers’ smartphone customerr satisfaction survey. The smartphone recieved the best possible marks for overall satisfaction, ease of operating, operation, physical design, and handset features."

  • Possible new imac

Well, my computer was hit by lighting as explained in one of my other posts, and insurance is replacing it. I can get a new G5 Imac. I was going to order it tomorrow. But now i am noticing a TON of posts about problems and defects! Like logic boards and fans. How big of a threat is this? Anyone know like a percentage of defects to good ones? I don't want to be stuck with something i have to fix all the time. I have an Ibook that has had bad logic boards. I don't want to deal with that again. *** is up with apple and logic boards! So, do you think it is safe to get the imac? also, the closest apple store is 4 hours away. So i couldn't go there if i had problems! Thanks for your insight!

also, one of the PC magazines did a survey of customer satisfaction, and Apple came out ahead of pretty much every Windows PC manufacturer.
(I will have to see if I can track that referrence down...)
Ahh, here it is: PC Magazine 18th Annual Reader Satisfaction Survey - 08/24/05 Quotes from article:
"...nearly 14,000 PC Magazine readers [responsed] ...
"Who's doing it right? As usual, Apple receives the highest ratings for overall satisfaction with both desktops and notebooks, and it is a Readers' Choice award recipient.
"Once again, Apple achieves scores that are far and away the highest for all vendors in our survey, earning Readers' Choices in both desktops and notebooks. For Apple, in both the desktop and notebook sections of the survey, every single score is significantly better than the industry average for Windows machines. No exceptions. Apple's overall score for desktops is 9.2, and the closest competing score, Alienware's, is 8.8. Apple's overall score for notebooks, 9.2, is just as high, and the rest are even further behind: IBM and Fujitsu are the closest, at 8.4."
Pretty sweet praise from readers of a primarily PC oriented magazine. 8^)

  • Old MacBook Issue - RSD?

    Greetings to All,
It’s been a few months since the debacle started over the RSD and all 40, and now 60 of the MacBooks at the college in southern California that I consult for are working fine since the illegal software was removed and the machines reloaded, properly, and the hardware all reseated. I also installed FreezeX on them so that no matter what was done to them, they would always go back to the way they were at the next reboot. The only way to save their files is on the AD networks Home Directories.
None of these machines ever gave us issues again, and none were ever sent in to Apple – I called them (Apple) and had several talks, but at the time there was no acknowledgement of a problem. I understand that some had MB/Heat Sinks replaced as well as some other stuff, but they never had to do that for us.
The school where I am actually employed, we have no MacBooks, so the only real exposure I have is at the Jr. College near Pomona – after I set up the server and the first lab. Since that time in September, they have had no issues.
They performed all the updates and after each successive one the machines had an overall performance increase. I have two of my own MacBooks, and I did the same, and with the same results. Mine are week 27&29, so they fall in the time frame. I never had any issues, and one of them is on most of the day, each day.
I did have an interesting experience with a person and their MacBook – Week 29 - where she insisted that she was having the RSD problem, but refused to send it in to Apple because of all the horror stories that she read about on this forum.
I took a look at it and found nothing wrong, but she would take it home/work and bring it back saying that she had RSD issues. This went on 5 or so times so I asked her to sit down and give me 15 minutes and to set it up and work as she usually did.
Well, lo and behold, she pops out this wireless mouse that I never had seen, inserts the receiver into a USB port and turns everything on. After about 5 minutes, the machine did its shutdown. This occurred several times.
I pulled the receiver out of the USB port, and sure enough the problem went away, and its never shutdown since.
I have to wonder how many of these RSD problems were actually a manufacturing problem. I do know that less than 1% of the machines were seen for the heat sink issue, and I wonder about that, as well.
Some of the stuff that I read on these forums is very useful and helpful, but some of it is so far fetched, and impossible that it’s almost funny when you read about it.
I’ve used the Apple forums, and many others, and have gotten some excellent help, so I will always stay involved, but some of the stuff is like light reading and very entertaining. If I can help, I’ll jump in, but I rarely respond to idiocy as some of it is, like, way out there.
It appears that Apple came through and solved the issues of RSD and several others regarding the MacBook, like I knew they would. Now, most of what I’m seeing is pretty entertaining, for the most part, but I hope folks figure out their problems – this forum is as good a place as any to start.
    Cheers.

I know 8 Core Duo MacBook owners. 4 of them,
including me, had RSD. All of us own stock MacBooks
without any 3rd party hardware or illegal software.
    I'm thoroughly convinced that RSD is/was a
manufacturing problem which has now been "worked
around" through a firmware fix. My heat sink
replacement reduced my 10-15 shutdowns a day to
zero. Flawless computer for two months and now I've
installed the firmware update...still working great
Yes it's certainly true that there have been many
theories tossed around on these forums as to what
defect causes RSD. Your implication that illegal
software/3rd party hardware is the primary RSD
culprit, is merely one of these RSD theories.
As "entertaining" and "far-fetched" as you have found
other RSD theories, some readers will be equally
    amused by your .
    theory.
    Greetings,
I didn't mean to imply that illeagal software or 3rd party stuff was the primary culprit in all this, I'm sure it wasn't. By illegal software, I was referring to faculty that installed things that they were not supposed to, like games, card making programs and software that wasn't part of th estandard school load. We fixed that with FreezeX.
If you look at the relatively few numbers that were affected, and they didn't range in a batch scenario because from what I read the week of manufacture was all over the planet.
I, myself, have never seen any of the symptoms described within these forums - it was always something else. I have worked with 60 - 70 of the MacBooks from widely varying weeks of production and we have been very satisfied with them. Sixty of them have gone through late summer school and almost an entire semester without a hitch, and they get used and abused.
I know that there are some machines with definite issues that Apple needs to take care of.
I find it a bit odd that the books are from so many different weeks of production, different life styles, different configurations, some with factory ram and some with whatever, and from different countries.
I'm glad Apple has found the problem and is taking care of it - I've had Apple computers since they first stated (PeeCees too) and I run with a huge Mac crowd from all over he world - like I said our overall satisfaction is high.
I hope everyone gets taken care of, which ever way it comes out, whether the machine is fixed, replaced or their money is returned.
Sorry to have riled some of you - that was not my intent.
    Cheers.

  • Still getting KP after replacing gfx card & having Genius Bar tests...

I've been getting kernel panics when waking the computer from sleep since 10.5.5 and rampantly since 10.5.6. Soon after my nVidia 6800 started displaying artifacts and would not boot unless under safe mode (in Leopard) or by removing the GeForce extensions all together (in Tiger).
I took it into an Apple store and the Genius desk pop in a new card and it booted fine so obviously that's the problem. Before I made a decision on replacing the card I wanted them to their thorough hardware check to make sure it was only the card and it came back clean.
Since Apple wanted $440 for a refurbished 6800 (that couldn't be found for a couple weeks) I got one off eBay for $300. Pop it in, looks good, reinstall Leopard, upgrade to 10.5.6 and start restoring my backups.
Everything was going fine until I put the computer to sleep last night and the next morning, once again, it fails to wake from sleep. Computer "breaths" to life, but the display is dark. Hard shutdown and I get my familiar kernel panics (this is copied from an old post of mine):

After sending an obviously frustrated report to Apple I don't know where to go from here. I was dealing with a woman at Apple's customer satisfaction center. When she gets back to me to check in I'm going to relay this news to her. My initial feelings were this was a bug between Leopard and G5 hardware as others were experiencing it.

  • My lenovo experience: or how a fanboy started dissing it.

My first Lenovo laptop I purchased new was ThinkPad X201T. While I used it with great overall satisfaction until recently for almost four years, it gave me a headache at the beginning.
I came back from a military service, and was returning to school. I was looking for a powerful yet portable laptop with a tablet pen I could use for drawing and notetaking. ThinkPad X201T was pretty much the only option in the market, and I opted for it. It was a no brainer decision.
My belief of ThinkPad's durability shattered apart in precisely one month. The USB just quit working and I had to get the board replaced. Of course, I totally hated that "serviceable used part" label I got on my 'new' board. BTW. the pen was giving me a big headache from the day one. It was a driver fault and Wacom eventually fixed their drivers during the next years.
I had to turn in my ThinkPad several times in my usage. USB broke once again, touchpad failed, hinge broke, cooling failed and overheated.... I used to treasure my electronics. I spent hundreds of dollars to get an overprotected carrying case, and cleaned it every day like a soldier does with his gun, made special care I don't hear a 'thud' when putting it down. They still happened.
I was still a ThinkPad fanboy. As a vintage computing fan, I used to have up to 14 ThinkPads(most of them from the IBM era) in my collection. I still love IBM ThinkPads and 701c, A31p, X31, X40 are still among my all time favorites.
Anyway, two years later, I started working, and X201T was getting a bit outdated. Windows8 was not (officially)supported, and graphics were way underpowered, and that heating problem was coming back. I started earning money then, and I thought it was about time I got a new laptop. I heard the news of ThinkPad Helix coming, and knew at a glance it was going to be my next portable computer. Few weeks later I became one of the first people to get ThinkPad Helix in Korea. And I was a first one to get a replacement.
The machine wouldn't turn on at all, the next one had a touchscreen problem, and the next one was also the same. By then a month has passed already from the date of first purchase, and Lenovo now had a right to offer me repair, instead of replacement. That's what happend, only that the new screen had the same touchscreen problem.
I shelled out like $2,600 when converted in USD into the Helix. I got it repaired once more and never even turned it on. It was sitting on a corner of my room for the next three month before I sold it for over $1,000 less than I spent. I had to use X201T one more year before I got myself a Surface Pro 2(Which, by the way, outperformed my expectations).
I sold my desktop an year before, and for some time already these laptops were my only productive computers. I prefer using laptops as a desktop alternative, and I decided to purchase W540 as my desktop. I started having bad feelings about purchasing a Lenovo PC, but what could go wrong, it was a ThinkPad.
I got my W540 earlier this year. I noticed a sleep problem from day one, and wasted few days reinstalling the OS. I sent it back to United States for repair, since for some reason Lenovo Korea does not offer global warranty, and it took one month to come back to me with a used system board, which shows the same symptoms. Now it's dumped in the same place where my Helix used to be.
Meanwhile, I also purchased ThinkPad 10, which I got yesterday. First of all, they dropped out my QuickShot cover. And the digitizer draws shakey lines. As a sloppy designer, the only thing I can do good is drawing straight lines, and with this I'm just sloppy.
I used to stand on lenovo's side when it became a subject of debate. 6-row keyboard gave ThinkPads a modern look, and it still is a great keyboard. The new touchpad had a great texture and is pleasant to use, and trackpoint buttons are still fairly usable once you get to use it. It's already been a while since I stopped doing that and and started recommending to my friends not to buy from Lenovo, but I still preferred Lenovo when I was buying MY computers, and every. single. time. Lenovo betrayed my respect.
By the way, it's the same 6-row keyboard, but Microsoft Surface's cramped typecover has much more efficient key layout than that of ThinkPads'. Stop and do some real researches.

@MOD : You guys really gotta start cleaning up your mess first. Tell the company to do their job right first. And if you're going to "clean" the article try to do it right. Don't just delete the words you don't like and then leave the empty holes there to make the OP look like an idiot.
