Apple TV & Regular TV Listings vs TIVO - HELP!

Maybe this is an obvious answer, but *how do regular TV listings and shows work with Apple TV*? I would like to have Apple TV for movies, Youtube videos, etc..., but I also want to watch my regular TV listings when I choose to - news, some daytime shows, Primetime shows, etc... I cannot find an answer to this question anywhere under the heading of Apple TV. Perhaps it is because it is so obvious. Also, *how does Apple TV compare to Tivo*? It is obviously a way to tape shows in a DVR type of way, but how is it like Tivo or different from Tivo? I understand that with Apple TV hooked up to different TV's one can share taped shows throughout the household, but the rest of it confuses me. If some kind person could explain this to me or point me to the URL that addresses this I would be MOST APPRECIATIVE. Our Tivo contract runs out in a month and we want a change drastically. Thank you for ANY HELP!!!!

True that you can't use it like a TiVo, but I have two now and love them. I plan on never buying another DVD player (even HD) ever again. The biggest surprise for me is that I didn't realize how they would get the most use - as a movie server. I've ripped all my DVDs (like I did my CDs years ago) and imported and converted all of our home movies. The kids now can watch everything we have upstairs or downstairs without having disks everywhere. I can't believe how often home movies get played now. This is in addition to renting movies or buying the occasional show that didn't get on TiVo, or having our entire music and photo library at our fingertips.
No if we could only get Hulu on this thing (legit).
