AppleCare using lower quality retina displays when repairing?

so last month, my mid-2012 retina display starting showing signs of banding. i was out of warranty, so i paid apple to fix the problem and they replaced the retina display. after bringing it home, i noticed that the colors weren't as vibrant as they were before, so i compared it to my sister's retina model (same exact model and build), and my assumptions were correct. the colors weren't as vibrant, and blacks seemed lighter; it seems as if the backlight was turned way up.
i reinstalled os x in case any default color settings were changed and played with the advanced calibration settings, but i can't get it to match the display on my sister's computer. the problem is definitely with the hardware.
i tried my best to take a picture of the two side by side to show you guys. both computers are plugged in running on full brightness with the exact same color settings. the display on the right is my sister's. it has deeper and richer colors, and you can more easily make out the details of the surface of the planet. the display on the left is the one apple just replaced, and it seems a little whitewashed with much poorer contrast.
i have 90 days after the work was completed to bring it back to the apple store in case there are any issues. is this something i can have fixed/replaced, or will they just tell me something along the lines of "tough luck, we can only replace it with the parts we have on hand"?
i'm sorry if this seems like a small detail i'm griping about, but i paid around $2000 originally and hundreds more to have the screen replaced, so i'd at least expect the same quality.

i have seen that thread, and from everything i've read samsung screens are supposed to have better image quality and no image retention issues, but the fact of the matter is the samsung screen i own has poorer image quality than the LG screen i had before. if you look at the post by user Bradsop on August 7th at 11:40 AM, he had this to say about the replacement samsung screens:
"Most replacement screens have been Samsung, some of those have other issues such as color, but there is no guarantee that your replacement screen will be Samsung. But anechdotal evidence from the posts here suggest that it is likely, if you replace the screen only, it will be Samsung."
so it appears as if someone else has noticed as well.
i have owned multiple pioneer kuro displays and high end computer monitors, so i understand the nuances of dynamic contrast, black/white levels, and color accuracy fairly well. today, i even showed a few friends of mine (who also own mbp retinas) if they noticed anything strange about the display, and they were able to easily tell that the display was way too bright and the colors faded.
if the samsung displays are truly supposed to be better than the LGs, i would want a replacement. i paid apple $700+ to replace a screen with banding issues, and in turn received an inferior display. judging from apple's initial reaction to the LG fiasco though, i doubt they'd be willing to replace the screen.

  • WHAT is the use of a retina display when you can't watch DVD movies? what's the purpose of a super thin retina macbook pro when you need to buy an external optical drive? doesn't it defeat the purpose already?

i don't care if my macbook is a little thicker as long as i don't need to burden myself of an external optical drive just for a simple  and common task of watching/listening to discs.

I'm confused, why did you choose to buy the retina model if you don't like it? This is exactly why Apple still manufacture/sell the 'old' style MBP which is thicker and has an optical drive built-in!

  • I am using MacBook Pro retina display

i am using MacBook Pro retina display with mountain lion but it is not updating to 10.8.2 either this updation is available and also had downloded and working on my friends Macbook Air...why not working on my machine can anybody help me out plzz

An Apple Tech person told me (I have the same problem) that this is a problem that the OSX 10.8.2 update has with solid-state storage devices.  They are working on a fix, he said, and will push it out via Software Update when it's ready.  He had no idea when that would be.

  • How do I decline an iOS 8.0.1 update on my iPad mini with retina display when I already updated to 8.0.2?

How do I decline an iOS 8.0.1 update on my iPad mini with retina display when I already updated to 8.0.2?

How do you mean? Once you have 8.0.2 on there it shouldn't be asking you to download 'old' software.
Did the older installer download already and is lurking on your device? Settings, general, usage. Populate the list and you should see and be able to delete it from there.

  • Keynote issue: Why does my iPhone 5 not detect my iPad with Retina Display when both devices are up-to-date?

I have an iPhone 5. I am trying to pair it to my iPad with Retina Display. However, the devices do not detect each other when trying to pair over Keynote.
My apps and iOS are up-to-date. What is the problem? I have even tried wi-fi. I successfully paired the device to my iMac and it works.

This is for you and any other person that needs it. I didn't know how to use it properly.
Therefore, I guess it is operator error on my part.
You have to go into your Presentation tools and enable the remote from there.
    Thank you for the link.

  • Grab - Using Grab with Retina Display MBP and Cinema HD

I use Grab occasionally to "remember" things -- a list of files, a thread in a discussion, etc.
My new (this week!) MBP with Retina Display is connected to my Cinema Display (as my old MBP had been).
I noticed that when I "grab" a window on the Cinema Display, the image produced is grainy and pixelated -- that's not how the window appears on the Cinema Display and it's not how "grabbed" images looked before my new MBP.
HOWEVER, when I move the same window over to the Retina Display and "grab" from there, the image is in sharp focus.
Do I need to always move windows over to the Retina Display screen before "grabbing" them?

  • I am unable to use the new retinal display with the 600 series smart board

I am a teacher and have both an older macbookpro (2006 2gigs ram 10.7) and the new retinal display macbookpro (10.8.2).  My school had two versions of smartboards (one is the 685 with a UX60 projector; the other is a newer 800 series).  My older macbookpro works with both boards but my new macbookpro works only with the newer 800 series.  It does not show any display at all with the older boards.  I have tried reducing the resolution but that does not help.  I have taken it to apple and it checks out fine.  I have spent hours with smartboard support in Calgary.  They can't figure it out but have never used a Mac with a retinal display and the older board or the UX60.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Ed S

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • HT5313 Since upgrading to 10.7.5, I can't use headphones on my Macbook Pro (with retina display) when connected to a Thunderbolt Display.  Anybody else?  Any solutions?

When I connect my headphones to my Macbook Pro, the sound continues to come through the Thunderbolt display instead of the headphones.  Any help would be appreciated.

To prevent your iPhone from automatically syncing when you plug it in, click on iTunes in the menu bar, then preferences, then "devices", then tick "prevent iPhones, iPad's and iPod's from syncing automatically".
Plug it in, then on the iPhone sync summary screen, click "info" along the top.
Make sure the "sync contacts" option is not ticked. as long as it's not ticked, then it won't sync with your mac's contacts but will still include them in backups.
Also, if you use iCloud, make sure that the iPhone/mac are either not signed into the same account, or that "contacts" is not turned on for both of them

  • I have a MacBook Pro with Retina display, when starting up, I see the Apple logo, the bar underneath fills about 1/4 of the way, and then the screen goes black, the mouse cursor is still visible.

Boots to black in OS X mode (I believe 10.10.2? tough to check right now).  I can boot into Windows 8 using Boot Camp without incident.  I have booted to Disk Utility and run Disk and Permissions Repair.  I have booted into Diagnostics, and no issues were found (ADP000 was the Reference Code given).  I reset the PRAM, which gave a louder chime than I had been getting when failing to start up OS X, but otherwise no change.  Feeling that my options were exhausted, I attempted to restore from Time Capsule, and it won't connect to Time Capsule, despite Time Capsule being the active router whose network I am connected to.  Please advise.
(This is my girlfriend's computer, she tells me that she selected an option to perform an automatic update later, that night.)

Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should install the version of OS X that you had installed.
Be sure you only work on the OS X volume, not your Windows volume. I cannot tell you if you will still be able to boot the Windows volume after the above. You will need to find a fix for that.

  • Overheating macbook Pro with Retina Display when watching video

I have an issue with the computer over heating, not to the point of shutting down, but it gets really hot. Previous reading suggests that i should switch to using only the graphics processor instead of the CPU. But there is no option to do this. Support would be greatly appeciated.

That is not abnormal when watching videos, especially at higher resolutions. Try watching at lower screen resolutions.
If you stress the GPU, as watching videos does, then the computer will naturally run hotter. Switching graphic processors is not likely to change that, assuming you can. To switch GPUs use Energy Saver preferences. This assumes that switching is under user control.

  • Low quality QT movie when compressing for web

I am exporting HDV footage from FCP and trying to compress it for the web. However, have not found settings that give me similar quality to what you see on say the Apple Trailers. Any suggested settings to give a high quality compression?
    Mark

Apple trailers are usually done by experts using H.264.It's not complicated but getting excellent compression is a dark art. You make uncomfortable tradeoffs by sacrificing one element, such as frame rate, for image size. This often requires carefully planning the trailer's content to take full advantage of the codec's abilities.
Start by investigating the codec in the manuals for FCP and searching Apple's site for more info on H.264. The results can be unexpectedly stunning. But you also must consider your audience's online accessibility to the clip. It can be very large.

  • How can i choose a lower quality print density when printing from firefox on my Mac. I cant move the slider along the scale ( I can when printing from the computer).

I can't change the print density when printing from Firefox. It is set at standard and although there is a "slider button" to use for choosing less or more density, it can't be moved. I can tick "grayscale". I can choose the density when printing from the computer. I have a Mac

I also have this problem where I used to be able to shrink a 2 page doc to a single page. Since upgrade to FF4 it no longer works - but you can choose say 60% and it will work. All used to work fine in FF3

  • Graphics generated using awt.graphics not displaying when run through a jar

I've created a small application that works fine when compiled and ran normally.
When I create a jar and run it, the application works mostly fine too, the button (there's a button in it) shows up, but the graphics produced with java.awt.Graphics don't. What's really weird is that this problem only seems to occur for some people. I sent the jar to some friends and for some of them it worked fine, while others had the same problem I have.
Can anyone tell me what's causing this and what I can do to fix it?

I would investigate by finding out what JRE versions are running on each of the users machines and then compare to see if there is a correlation between certain versions and this Graphics problem.

    Thanks for the reply,
But I already knew how to manage GPO of a remote computer via MMC, which I have even explained about it in my query.
I'm looking for the possibilities and methods of using GPMC to Manage GPO of a remote computer.
