Applet file access

I know that unsigned applets loaded into a browser don't have access to the local file system. Is there any way for people to save information from an applet for later use through a save file dialog? It seems like there must be some way to save data without having to get the applet signed.

If you have the file saved on the Web-Server you could redirect the browser to that page so that the browser can download the file and show the Save-dialog.

Hi, I am new to applets and I am trying to build an applet that needs input from other files on the server. How can I give my applet access to these files? I found some code with URLConnection, but I cannot seem to make it work. I am getting AppletNotLoaded appearing on the bottom of the webpage. I am also getting errors saying that certain classes cannot be found, like point3f or anything from vecmath. Is there something to be done to fix this?
It has to be finding the applet, just not loading it because its reading through the list of imports...

Applet file access security

Hi, I'm trying to test my applet locally, but it came up with SecurityAccesExceptions when trying to access a required config file. I've been told this is because applets are prevented from accessing files not on a server, for security etc. So I stuck everything onto my local server and gave an absolute path to the file (http://localhost/config.xml). That worked, but I have 2 queries:
1) The config.xml file then refers to another config file, in a field logconfigpath, which is accessed using new file(logconfigpath) in initialisation. Problem is, apparently the file constructer cant create a File from an absolute path like http://localhost/logconfig.xml. It says it cant find it... And if I set the logconfigpath to just be the relative path of the xml (logconfig.xml), it comes up with a security exception again... What to do?
2) How does the applet know if its being run from a server or locally? I stuck everything onto my local server and tried giving xml paths relatively, and it still didnt like it. I still needed to provide its absolute path on my localserver. Does this mean when this is eventually implemented on a proper server, I'd still need to provide the file locations absolutely?
Sorry if these are really basic questions...I'm quite the beginner...

the important thing is who is running the applet. That 'thing' can install a SecurityManager, which decides what an applet can do. If you run in a browser, like ie, then the applet won't be allowed to access the local file system. If you run the applet in appletviewer, it will.
To get around these problems, just sign your jar. It is a trivial thing to do
First generate a digital signature in a keystore using the keytool command as
keytool -genkey -alias myalias -keystore c:\mykey.store -keypass mypass -storepass mypass2then sign your jar file like
jarsigner -keystore c:\mykey.store -storepass mypass2 -keypass mypass -signedjar c:\temp\mysigned.jar c:\temp\original.jar myalias

Applets and accessing files confusion

I am confused about applets and their abilty to access files.
I know that applets cannot access files on a users hard drive until given pemission but if i design an applet that needs access to files on the server where it is running will it be able to read and write those files in the same location as the applet without the need to set permissions?

The applet is very much able to read files from the server. This is easiest done by creating a URL and opening a stream to it:

Saving files to the server is also possible without setting permissions but it's a bit harder. In short, you need some sort of server that accepts a connection and saves what you send it to disk. The server can be eg. a servlet, a database or a FTP server.

How the applet can access local file system?

1. I want to plugin the applet into the JSP. That applet should access the local file system. How to enable this programmatically.
2. Is it is possible to embed a frame inside the JSP. If so how?

1: If you want the applet to access the client's local file system you'll have to sign the applet. There is a tutorial some where on the java.sun.com that explains how to sign an applet.
2: No you;ll need to use an applet to display swing or awt components on the client browser.

When using Java Wizard with Firefox 3.6.23 on a Mac OS X 10.6.8 it keep getting an error message: "The Java Wizard cannot run. Please configure your browser to allow Java applets to access the filesystem." Have NO idea how to fix this problem.

When trying to upload files I received the following error: "The Java Wizard cannot run. Please configure your browser to allow Java applets to access the filesystem."

If the problem is with a site that is hosted using MOVEit DMZ by Ipswitch, please notify the site owner of the issue and ask them to apply the patch that is available on the support site to resolve the issue.
This is a better resolution than downgrading your version of Java that was updated due to security issues.

NIGHTMARE! Signed Applet - No Access. Please Help.

I'm trying to make a signed applet gain access to my directory structure.
I created a simple applet to test with one line:
sErr = System.getProperty("user.dir");
The code is below.
I sign it using the following:
keytool -genkey -keyalg rsa -storepass MyCerts
As you can see I'm using the default keystore but I've tried it by using -keystore MyKeystore too.
It runs me through all the questions which I answer, no problems.
Then I sign it:
jarsigner -signedjar SSignedApplet.jar SignedApplet.jar MyCerts
It asks for the passwords which I enter.
It completes without error and the SSignedApplet.jar file shows up in the directory.
If I open the signed jar file it has all 3 of the files in the META-INF folder and the Manifest file looks right to me.
I upload the jar and the Default.asp file to a Web server (I've tried localhost and a remote host).
I open the page and the pop up comes up asking if I want to trust the unverified applet. I click 'Run'.
Once the applet is 'Started' I click the 'Get Properties' button and I get the error:
access denied (java.util.PropertyPermission user.dir read)
I've tried 2 examples that work fine on my machine (that I didn't write).
The first is by Francois Orsini (Derby Demo) and the other is by Laura MacDougal (successfully wrote a file to my user.dir directory).
No matter what I do, I can't sign an applet and make it access anything.

If you've really run through it you would have known that code called from
javascript is not trusted and you have to use doprivileged (hey its in bold...
why would that be?).
Call getProp from init within the applet and you've got no problem.
As for your imageIcon, creating one with string as a parameter
the string is used as input for a File. I had no problem loading one with a signed applet.
I'll post the example later in your other thread.

i am developing a web appln in jsp which accesses the client machine n access the files and folders in his machine....is this possible or will i have to create a signed applet to access those files

You indeed need a full clientside program for this, such as a signed applet.

After downloadeding the latest Java plugin, I start to receive "Please configure your browser to allow Java applets to access the filesystem" message when I try to run a download wizard. What do I need to do? BTW, IE does not have this problem.

I had no problem using a download wizard Java applet to download file to my computer from an SFTP site using Firefox. When I tried to do the same thing with Chrome, I was told to download the latest plugin. Once I did that, I receive the following message when I run the downlaod wizard:

Please configure your browser to allow Java applets to access the filesystem.
I got the same message using Firefox and Chrome. However, I have no problem using IE to run the same download wizzard. Please help.

Applet Security Access

I'm trying to get an applet to access an AS/400s system status. The applet needs to connect to the AS/400 to get the system status measures...
When I try to connect to the AS/400 through the main method of an application program everything works fine, however the applet fails and sas that access is denied--
(java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.net.SocketPermission (AS/400-System Name) resolve))
...etc...
What permissions do I need to give the applet to make the connection work, and how do I go about giving these permissions (ie..in a java.policy file, or in the program?)

I found some articles at http://java.sun.com/sfaq/index.html.
In some of the articles, it mentioned using acl.read acl.write for file access permissions for applets. The acl.read should be specified in a file ~/.hotjava/properties. I tried, and tried put .hotjava/properties at various places such as c:/windows, c:/, c:/windows/.java, c:/my doucuments..., and I am using appletviewer from jdk1.3.1_06, not any luck for me. Nothing worked yet.

Does the FLV video player component support file access via CIFS (windows file share) using UNC path \\server\share\filename?
If Yes,
Is that considered local file access? or Network Access?

Applets are not allowed to connect to other server
than the one they were loaded from. This is probably
the reason here.You mean that I can use the applet after uploading on my web-site and using "getDocumentBase()" only?

The applet works perfectly if I use that function, but I have another question.
If I want to use something like:
Img1=getImage(getDocumentBase(), "s01.jpg");
it works perfectly.
If I do the fillowing:
Img1=getImage(getDocumentBase(), "pic/s01.jpg");
it also works.
But is it possible to go a level up?
Like:
Img1=getImage(getDocumentBase(), "../pic/s01.jpg");
That is if an applet is in one folder and the pictures are in another, but to get to them I have to go a level up and then enter another folder.

Not Working: BlackBerry Link Remote File Access Remove Old BlackBerry from BB ID

I have: removed my blackberry q10 from blackberry link, wiped my q10, uninstalled and reinstalled blackberry link, have link version 1.1.1.32, blackberry q10 os version 10.1.0.2309 - which whenever I plug in the q10 after removing the device from link, says there is an os update, so I update it, and then it does nothing apart from rebooting the q10, or gives an error saying 'updates not available. Please check internet connection and retry.'.
Also, I have Logout/login on blackberry link, I know my q10 is activated as I have purchased items from app world, and on the computer the app world site shows that I have a q10 when I sign in. I am using the same BBID and have changed the password on my q10 to see if that made a difference, then signed out and back into link on computer with updated password. I have administrator rights on my computer.
I can access the q10 from my computer over the same wifi network, and it syncs files fine with wireless sync turned on. It is remote file access not giving the option to connect to my q10. 'BBID *email* isn't associated with a device running Blackberry 10 OS or an error occurred when trying to retrieve your information from the Blackberry ID servers.'
The problem is that although I have the same blackberry id for link and my q10, no devices show up on the remote file access screen, and I cannot access my files on my computer from my q10, yet I can sync them on my computer over the wifi network. How can I enable Remote File Access?
A problem could be that I have a Curve 9300 on my BB ID account, so if I could disable this (which I have no idea how to do after a lot of research), this might rectify why link cannot set up remote file access.
What I haven't done is wiped my q10 and uninstalled all user data from link at the same time, as then I would have to manually reload everything on my q10.
My q10 shows my computer in the settings\blackberry link\paired devices , but I 'cannot view files on *computer*'. Also, link does not show in the file manager. I set up my q10 as a permanent link not a one-off connection.

No one cares because it's not a z10 (I know because I am having the same problem and no one knows how to fix it and no threads for q10 fix)

Read-only file access from network volume

I get an read-only file access from network volume problem while sharing a drive from Snow Leopard to a Tiger install. Most of files were opening well, but *.fp7 (FileMaker) and *.xls (Excel) files won't open dealing with a read-only error.
As descibed in the last post of http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1406977 the client have the same share name of the server. Renomming it resolved the error!

right then, as it looks like I'm talking to myself....
I have just wiped clean the Macbook Pro.
I installed Leopard from scratch, then installed Office 2008.
Logged back onto the network share, and the read-only error came up again, ONLY in Excel.
bugger.
Did the same thing with my Macbook and all is fine.
Copy the file to the local hard drive, opens ok.
I then copied the file to another Mac on the network.
mmmm, opens fine.
what's the difference....
mmmm, the machine it opens fine from is running 10.4
the machine which hosts all the data is running 10.3.9
could this be the problem.
Just done a software update check on the 10.3 machine and there are some security updates that need doing.
Going to run that now and see what happens, otherwise I think the iMac running 10.3.9 is going to need to come up to 10.4 and fingers crossed this will solve it.

JRE 1.7 / Java Plug-in - Long delay in retrieving the applet File(JAR) due to a request to the Domain Controller(on port 53)

Description:
A specific group of users/customers (using Windows7 OS with IE and FireFox web browsers) are facing problems with retrieving the applet File, after they upgraded the JRE on the system(PC) to JRE 1.7.0_25-b17 from JRE version 1.6.0_29-b11.
With JRE 1.7.0_25-b17 it is noticed that when the Java plugin requests for the applet File; it sends a request to the Domain Controller of the user, which causes a delay of 2 to 5 minutes and sometimes hangs. The problem occurs consistently.
The current temporary workaround for this group of users is to use JRE version 1.6.0_29-b11.
Problem analysis:
To investigate the problem the below steps were executed:
1) Collected the Java console outputbelow details from the user's system. (The complete output is not posted due to lengthy content, though can be added further to this post if required.)
(a) Works fine with JRE version 1.6.0_29-b11. Kindly refer to Java console output in the code ‘section A’ towards the end of this post.
(b) The problem occurs with problem with JRE version 1.7.0_25-b17. Kindly refer to Java console output in the code ‘section B’ towards the end of this post. The step where the problem is observed, is indicated as(##<comment>##).
2) The network settings in the user's browser was checked. Internet Options > Connections > LAN setting
The configured option is 'Use automatic configuration script' and the value is http://www.userAppX.com/proxy.pac
This configuration remains the same irrespective of the JRE version in use.
3) The network settings in the Java Control Panel was checked.
The used/selected option is "Use browser settings", although values for 'Use proxy server' and 'use automatic proxy configuration script' are filled-in as 'user-proxy.com' and 'http://www.userAppX.com/proxy.pac' respectively.
This configuration remains the same irrespective of the JRE version in use.
4) The proxy PAC file was checked and debugging was done for the request 'https://myAppletHost.com/download/...'. The FindProxyForUrl function (including the conditions defined in it, for the hostname and domain checks) returns PROXY user-proxy.com:80
5) The user also tried the below
a. Changed the option in the network settings in the browser to 'Proxy server' with Address 'user-proxy.com' and Port '80'
b. Restarted the browser.
c. Tried with Java Plug-in 1.6.0_29, JRE version 1.6.0_29-b11. There was no problem and no request to the Domain Controller of the user.
d. Tried with Java Plug-in 10.40.2.43, JRE version 1.7.0_40-b43. The problem occurs with the delay and a request to the Domain Controller of the user is observed.
Kindly refer to Java console output in the code ‘section C’ towards the end of this post.
6) The user also tried setting the below property in the Java Control panel; restarted the browser, and try with JRE 1.7.0_40-b43. The problem stil persists.

7) The Global Policy Management of the Domain Controller was verified by the user. It has GPO for proxy setting but nothing related to Java security.
Questions:
The problem seems be specific to a particular (user) environment setup, and the user faces the problem when using JRE 1.7.
We would like to know if the issue is in the (user) environment setup or in JRE 1.7.
Could you please help with information/ideas/suggestions to identify the root cause and solution for this problem?

PS:
Since the JRE 1.7.0_25-b17 update, it is noticed that when the Java plugin requests for the applet File; it sends a request to the Domain Controller of the user, which causes a delay of 2 to 5 minutes and sometimes hangs.
The problem occurs consistently, and also with JRE 1.7.0_45-b18.

My organization is experiencing very similar problems. We have resolved it through several steps.
We upgraded the client to Java 8 and we saw in the console that the hanging connection with the Domain Controller no longer occurs. This may be all that is necessary for your environment as well.

Sql agent job getting file access denied error

I'm not sure if this question belongs in this forum. Please move it if you want to.
Here is my question. I have an ssis package that is running into an error at the file system task trying to move a file. The package is deployed to the catalog and I am running the package using the stored procedure
[SSISDB].[catalog].[start_execution] @execution_id
When I execute this stored proc in Management Studio while logged in under a sysadmin, everything works fine. But when I call the same TQL in SQL Agent job, I get a file access denied error. This has something to do with the id that is getting used
to run the package and I am not sure how to track that down. Any help would be appreciated.
I've check the windows permission on both the id that is running the SQL Agent and SQL SSIS Service. Both seem to have the right windows permission.
