Applet Slow, Laggin ... Image handling, etc.

I had an applet developed and its slow to respond. When I click a item it takes few seconds for the data to show.
1) What things are available for testing the performance of an applet? What things could make an applet run slow?
2) This applet will need to handle lots of images (1000-2000 @ 25-50k in size). What is the best way to handle image display in an applet to improve speed and performance? Can they be stored in the server memory or an index so that they can be retrieved faster than being pulled from the file system?
3) Is webstart faster than applet?
Any suggestions on how to improve the applet performance would be very much appreciated.
Thank you.

First you need to test your applet locally on your workstation running all on the same host to eliminate network and browser problems. If the applet is fast enough, the problem is your client/server connection or your browser.

  • Best Adobe product for editing PDF, replacing English text with Thai without altering/recompressing images, graphics etc.?

    I have an English language PDF, a medical device brochure, the content of which has already been translated into Thai (in Word). I want to replace the original English in the PDF with the Thai translation easily without altering any other aspect of the brochure, like graphics, images, margins etc. (No doubt I'll have to tweak line height, font sizes and paragraph lengths a little.) I'm unsure of what would be the best Adobe product for this purpose, e.g. Illustrator, InDesign or Acrobat (or something else), that would allow me simply to open the PDF, replace the English with Thai in an attractive Thai font (to be embedded), make minor layout tweaks, then save without any compression so the quality and colours of the original photos, artwork, and graphical elements are preserved. I've heard Office 2013 allows direct editing of a PDF but I'm not sure if it converts, alters or compresses PDF graphics in some way when first opening the file. Could anyone with relevant experience please advise? Thanks in advance.

    Adobe's only offering here is Adobe Acrobat. However, I must say something. I have heard from many people who sought to translate a PDF in this way. NONE SUCCEEDED. PDF is not suitable for this purpose. Obtain the original, this should be part of your contract for translation. If this is impossible, expect to remake the document; Word is probably unsuitable for a brochure of this type, maybe InDesign.

  • Applet that saves images in server

    Hi. I want to know if is possible that an simple drawing applet saves the image as png, gif or any that was draw in the applet.
    If so what clases i have to look.

    Appears it wont work. Since the last project didnt require

  • Are applets slow?

    Hi all,
    Quick question. I am developing a Java Applet and an Application. And, I just want some feedback from the pros on the difference between exectution speed between an applet and an application..
    [1] Are Java Applets slower or faster - compared to an equivalent Java Application?
    [2] If there is a difference in speed between and Applet and an Application, can you explain why there is a speed difference? Is there any extra overhead?
    [3] If you do not want to re-invent the wheel, can send me link to anything that might answer the above questions.

    It doesn't necessarily have to be a browser. But an applet does require a host of some sort and therefore all the resources of that host. So yes, technically the applet requires more resources.
    I'm sorry but "technically" it does no such thing.
    The applet runs in the VM and that process, as Kaj noted may well be outside of the browser (or whatever) process and so no the applet does not require more resources. Hmm, I think you and I have different definitions of "require". When I say require, I mean that you can not under any circumstances ever open an applet without a host. Since the applet requires the host, it requires the hosts resources as well (funny thing about host programs, they require resources to exist). Therefore, an applet technically requires more resources.

    I understand your point but it's important to be clear else you leave future readers a faulty impression. Your point is akin to my saying that a Java program is slow because I have a USB printer. I mean just because someone had a bad experience with an applet because their spyware infested bloat-browser chews up all the system resources doesn't mean the applet is accountable for that or that this is an inherent fault in the concept of applets. I'm sorry but your comparison does not match. Unless you specifically went out of your way and hardcoded your printer in, then the java program does not care what kind of printer you have. That is to say, your usb printer is not required to run the program so it is not the same as an applet which does require it's host.
    Consider this if you will, an applet and application are written to do exactly the same thing. They have more or less pretty much identical code. Now, on the same machine, run the applet after a cold start and benchmark it. Then cold start the machine again and benchmark the apllication. Which wins?
    If you concern yourself with just the applet vrs the application they should be identical (actually not true, the applet should have a slight advantage) but because of the extra resources consumed by the host which must be started for the applet to run but is not started for the application, the applet is going to loose every time.
    My point in mentioning this was exactly to prevent faulty impressions. If you look at the big picture an applet is actually more resource dependant and slightly slower (though admittedly most users will never notice). It is not a fault in the concept of applets but rather a tradeoff for the benefits of applets. The whole purpose of an applet is to provide functionality that the host (usually a browser) does not have, and to do it inside of that host. So, if going by the pure purpose of applets, there should never be an application that matches it, if there is then the applet should have been an application in the first place.
    cotton.m wrote:
    I think a better way of phrasing it would be that on some systems an applet's operating environment may be performance restricted due to a lack of system resources. That is more or less what I said, the only difference is I actually provided an example of just such a system.

  • Image Handles and Flattern to String

    Hi All,
    I have an 8bit image, load an image to it, and then learn is as a template for pattern matching.
    Next I want to flatten the image handle into a string, unflatten it and then use it.
    Unfortunately, once unflattend I find that the pattern matching information is no longer available. The image itself is intact, but not the pattern information.
    Has anyone seen this before? Come up with a fix/work around?
    Thanks for you help

    Hi Greg,
    thanks for the response.
    To answer your question: IMAQ Vision - 7.0.0 and LV - 7.1
    I seem to have found out what the issue is.
    It appears that when I use a flatten to string function on an image handle the resulting string includes all the image data, not simply the flattened handle.
    To overcome this problem I used a cast function on the image handle to cast it to a string, and then cast that string back to an image handle. Using this operation the string is simply the same text as the image handle, and once cast back to the image handle the image still contains the pattern information
    So why is the flatten to string behaving differently for an image handle then it would for any other type of data?
    Again, thanks for your hel

  • Java Applet - slow response over WAN and fast on LAN

    Hi All,
    Using Tomcat we have a Java applet that runs very slow over the Internet but just the opposite on the LAN (fast). On our website we have a link that we click which initializes the application. it is very slow but if the same link is clicked on the LAN it is very fast in responding. We have a 10MB internet connection and even when testing with very little traffic after peak business hours we have same results.When closing the browser and reopening it is much faster the second time. This tells me it is being Cached. If I go to a system that has never accessed the applet we are very slow again. We are hosting this application for a 3rd party so we did not write the code. This company is finger pointing at Router and I am finger pointing at Java application itself maybe not being optimal.
    I am attaching "debug" info from Java Console. Can anyone identify any issues from this debug output or familiarity with this type issue. Your insight is greatly appreciated.

  • Printing from a applet toolbar the image displayed in the applet

    Hi ,
    I have a JApplet which displays a tiff image. The applet uses JAI API and Java 2D for printing. I can zoom in . zoom out , invert the image and I am printing the displayed image also .
    In the action handler class for the print button , I have made an inner class implementing printable and executing the print function.
    I am doing printing via a separate thread as i don't want my action handler class to keep waiting till the image gets printed . The user should be able to manipulate the image after it has clicked on the "ok" of the print dialog, while the image is being printed. This is the reason for printing the image in a separate thread
    and the actual printing process is a synchronized method called by the run method of the thread .
    If I click on print button twice , one after another , the second image gets printed only after I get a response from the printer that image has been printed as expected (as the print method is synchronized ).
    In the action handler class of print , I do not call join on the thread as I do not want it to wait for printing to get over ( printing of a tiff image actually takes a long time ?? )
    Is there anyway to make the threads independent of the main applet . Like after firing the print command , if I close the applet and I haven't got a confirmation from the printer, I get a blank page or nothing but i get a response message from printer that printing is done .
    Is it essential for a thread to wait till the printer sends a response that printing is over ?
    Similarly , If after firing the printing command and without waiting for the confirmation from the printer , I refresh the applet , proper printing does not occur but I get a message from the printer that printing is done .
    If i use synchronized method for printing and wait till the printer response from the printer comes without closing or refreshing the applet , printing occurs fine .
    Can anyone please tell me what is actually happening and is there a better way to print and that printing occurs after the print command has been fired irrespective of the applet ?
    Regards , Navneet

    Hey can you send me the code for the same. I know its been a long while, but I am new to JAI and need the same stuff u coded. u can mail it to me on [email protected]

  • General discussion - image handling using Java

    Hi,
    I am working on an image-processingtool over 4 month and i am a little annoyed by
    the handling of images in java/JAI.
    The differentiation between the color model, the sample model and the databuffer looks
    very nice and oop. In practice it is very complicated ...
    Try to load an image ... convert this to an gray-image and then do some operations onto
    this image under the restriction, that the values of each pixel should be minimal 16bits long.
    I found each class i should use to create such an buffered image. I do so ... but the result is
    not the one I suggest.
    The support of 16/32bit per pixel images is in general not the best at the core jdk.
    The JAI-library provide better support on the first look but there you got to know much knowledge
    how to use the library(the api is not very self documentating).
    One one side I though .. hey why you don't let the images be images and only work with Raster's?
    But you can't do any JAI-operation on a Raster nor can't you create a image only with the raster itself.
    There you end up in difficult merge conflicts with rasters, buffered images or planar images and the
    precission of 16/32 bits per pixel or only 8 bits.
    For me as a practical user of java.awt.image and jai the complicated usage of those classes in the cases
    I described was not the best sign. I don't got the time to read books about color models, sample models etc.
    to write an app which should do "only simple edge detecting ops".
    So maybe in future releases of the jdk this point of view can be noticed.
    Greetings,
    Olek

    As I remember Studio4 place resource files under
    project folder in the .jar file. If you working on
    "sampleproject", and place a pic/splash.png into .jar
    you can reach it like
    Image image =
    Image.createImage("sampleprojec/pic/splash.png");
    I'm not sure, but you could simple check it if you
    look into .jar file.How do I look into the .jar file? Open it in notepad and try and decipher the text, in there it says "res/player.png", but I've tried that, I've tried "/res/player.png", "player.png", "/player.png", "/bin/game/player.png","/bin/game/res/player.png" nothing works, actually I can't compile anything now either - the world has all gone wrong.....

  • Downloadable Products/Batch Image Upload, etc.

    I have a long time client that went and purchased an existing website that had the ordering system created using ColdFusion.  Of course, the client has thrown a few things at me (wish they would check with me before purchasing something). And I am so not a ColdFusion developer.
    Background on the site.  It is a photography site. A client is given a login ID that is unique to their gallery of images and once logged in they can view all the photos from their event (wedding, etc.) and purchase.  There are 3 different option groups.  The first one is the size (and downloadable product has been added there), then the finish but available for only 3 of the sizes, and finally a frame (which is only available on certain items).
    1) He wants to offer downloadable images that are delivered after purchasing,
    2) he wants to be able to do batch uploading of photographs
    3) automatic watermarking (I've managed to tempoarily handle that using css and a .png)
    4) batch ordering that can be compiled into an album
    I have wondered about just separating out the downloadable option into a separate section, and maybe another one for give them all to me.
    I do have an email into the original site developer about these options, if they are even a possibility, but thought I'd ask here.  And if I could locate components where in the heck do you add them?
    As you can tell I'm a total newbie.
    Thanks!
    Chris

    The new image functionality in Coldfusion 9 would be ideal for you. That is, if you're prepared to think ahead.
    1) He wants to offer downloadable images that are delivered after purchasing,

    3) automatic watermarking (I've managed to tempoarily handle that using css and a .png)

    4) batch ordering that can be compiled into an album

  • Applet loading of images -- network or JAR approach faster?

    hi all,
    i'm stumped. my applet used to load images over the network. (it was actually designed by someone else.) yes, the applet used to load each image file independently over the network and incurred a network hit per image file.
    to avoid the overhead of a separate network connection for each image file, i bundled all the images into the same JAR file that contains the applet. yet, the loading time for the applet is somehow slower now. i'm totally mystified.
    i put the code for loading each image into a separate thread as well. here's the thread code:
    BEGIN CODE
    public class ImageLoaderThread extends Thread {
         private Hashtable images;
         private DesignApplet applet;
         public ImageLoaderThread(DesignApplet applet, Hashtable images, String imageFile) {
              super(imageFile);
              this.images = images;
              this.applet = applet;
         public void run() {
              try {
                   System.out.println("Starting to load image ...");
                   String imageFile = getName();
                   InputStream is = applet.getClass().getResourceAsStream(imageFile);
                   int arraySize = is.available() * 2; // CH: create extra space just in case
                   System.out.println("Image Loader Thread: " + imageFile + "bytes available: " + arraySize);
                   BufferedInputStream bis = new BufferedInputStream(is);
                   byte[] byBuf = new byte[arraySize]; // a buffer large enough for our image
                   int byteRead = bis.read(byBuf, 0, arraySize);
                   Image buttonImage = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().createImage(byBuf);
                   images.put(imageFile, buttonImage);
              catch(Exception e) {
                   System.out.println("Exception while loading: " + getName());
                   e.printStackTrace();
    END CODE
    imageFile is the name of an image file stored in the JAR file. it's not stored on the server anywhere, so i know the image is getting created from the JAR file. despite this, the speed of image creation seems tied to the network. in other words, when i attempt to load the applet over a slow link, it takes longer to load than over a fast link.
    any ideas what i'm doing wrong? i'm seriously stumped and could use help. my goals are to minimize loading time of the applet while minimizing network hits for the server.
    thanks!
    p.s. if you want to play w/ the applet, click on the following link and click the "Customize" button: http://www.cengraving.com/s/z/Photo-plaques/PP024.jsp

    Why are you using a thread to load each image why not just load the images in the gui thread?
    Each thread you create takes a finite time to be started and stopped. This will surely have added to the load and startup time.
    There is also blocking going on since using the Java Console I can see that each thread reports in sequence:
    "Starting to load image ..."
    And then after all threads have reported they are starting they then report in squence:
    Image Loader Thread: " + imageFile + "bytes available: " + arraySize information.
    This shows that there is at least some blocking going on with the threads.
    I don't think using separate threads to do the loading is helping at all. Just load them one after another in the same thread (the thread all your threads are being started from).
    The putting of the images into the images Hashtable will also be blocking since Hashtable is synchronized.

  • How can I organize my files in files panel;images, videos etc?

    I am begining to have a lot of files in my files panel. I have a folder for images but when I put the images there dreamweaver does not know where to find them, even though I specified this when setting up.  I am now begining to get a lot of videos and would like to organize the files a lot better. any ideas?  thanks

    If you already have links to your images and videos, etc., and you want to rearrange them, do it in your Files Panel, not your computer file manager system. Most of your links will remain appropriate, even if you make (in the Files Panel) new folders to store different types of files in. You can drag and organize to your heart's content in the Files Panel.
    You will still want to check your links, as Gary states, but the actual reorganizing...when done with already linked files in the Files Panel...will make the checking less painful and require fewer re-linkings.
    In fact, the only html file that actually NEEDS to remain at the root level is the index.html default file. You can safely store the rest in subfolders. If you have many, many pages, you might consider organizing them into folders and adding index.html pages to each subfolder. Not a copy of your main index file, of course, but 'departmental' default files. That system will also make applying javascript "breadcrumbs," such as those of Kaosweaver, quite simple, as it uses index.html filenames for breadcrumbs.
    You will want to carefully keep files that are auxiliary to Flash and Video files with their Flash and Video files, and be sure to test the links and locations of those files thoroughly. But there's no real reason you can't move them.

  • Sluggish performance and slow visio image loading in Acrobat Reader

    I have created a pdf file with the Adobe PDF-"printer" from an original Word document. The Word document contains image components from Visio, which have been copy-pasted into the Word document (for instance a UML diagram). While the performance in Word is OK, the performance in Adobe Reader (AR) is not. The image components render real slow in AR, sometimes taking a minute to render an A4 of image components.
    Question: Is there some way to make the Adobe PDF-"printer" convert the copy-pasted image components into real images (i.e. not vector graphics)? Or is there some other performance improvement I could do?
    I would also be happy to know how it can run so smooth in Word but so sluggish in pdf-format :)

    Thanks Dave! I was in the middle of writing this when your post came in:
    Not sure if this will help anyone, but I changed the button fill color to white and it seemed to fix the flicker. I exported each state from indesign as a PDF and recreated the button from scratch. This still had the flicker. I'm guessing something strange is happening with the transparancy of the states.
    Glad to hear it's fixed!

  • Safari 2.0.3 Not showing images, flakiness, etc

    Hello, I am an advanced Mac Tech who just upgraded to Safari 2.0.3 (with Mac OSX 10.4.4). As of this morning I am noticeing flakiness.
    When I go to all my usual pages, I am noticeing that all the images with the within the web pages are not drawing, just empty 'placeholder' boxes
    Background: I have done all the "obvious" troubleshooting:
    Repair permissions before and After Install (including fsck)
    Reinstalling the combo Updater 10.4.4.
    Emptying Safari Cache.
    Onyx 1.6.6 to clear all caches, etc.
    Toggling the "block Pop-Up Windows" command to see if changes.
    Enabling the Debug menu, emulating different bowsers.
    Still, no success. Images are being blocked.
    If I use Internet Explorer 5.2.3 or Firefox 1.5. all pages/images draw normally. It's definitely isolated to Safari 2.0.3
    Anybody got any "Advanced" ideas?
    Thanks

    OK, it got fixed:
    Finally, I just got rid of the "com.apple.Safari.plist" preference, rebooted, and everything went back to normal, and it even seemed to have come back with most of my custom preferences intact. hmm.

    <APPLET CODE="christmas\Christmas.class" WIDTH=500 HEIGHT=500>

    <APPLET CODE="christmas.Christmas" WIDTH=500

    I think it won't work because of parameter CODE. The browser or Appletviewer can just think that it's a file "christmas" with a Christmas-extension.
    Any case, my applets work in a such way:
    <APPLET CODEBASE="christmas" CODE="Christmas" WIDTH=500 HEIGHT=500>
