Applications Sometimes Hang Finder

I relatively recently upgraded from a G3 IMac with 10.3 to a G4 IMac with 10.5.
I've noticed one or two discrepancies in performance quality which I initially ignored, but they've persisted long enough that they've become annoying and I really do want to resolve them. All issues occur only sometimes, but if I switch between a couple running applications enough I can sometimes cause them to happen.
1.) The first issue is that Finder hangs when I switch to it from a running application. I don't know why, or what sequence of actions causes it, but most often it will occur immediately after trying to click my desktop from Firefox or VLC.
I'll usually habitually click my desktop to shift out of the current application and to Finder. It won't and I only really end up noticing it when I start selecting or renaming files. When I try to select files, I can never deselect them, so I end up selecting more than I want in attempt to shake the issue. Also when I want to rename a file, the name text simply vanishes until I click away, and it returns to normal. I just can't rename files when this issue arises. All the while during whatever application I was leaving still appears in the menu bar even if I'm specifically selecting files in Finder.
I can only seem to shake the issue if I open a Finder window and click the window's menu bar area, when my menu switches back to Finder and I deselect and rename files again.
This is the biggest issue as it happens the most often.
2.) The second issue is a problem I encounter when I'm in the middle of renaming a file. Out of nowhere the name change text box will close when I type in a letter, and reopening it just leads to the problem repeating itself. A bit of fidgeting with windows and selections stifles the problem, but it's quite irritating when it comes up. Doesn't happen very often.
3.) And seems to have started happening. My third issue is that I'll quit an application like Firefox, Quicktime, or VLC, and then move to something else while it quits. I soon notice that it hasn't quit. The window's still open, the icon's still in the dock, and it's still "on". I don't get the "application is not responding" from the control-click or force-quit menus, and it immediately disappears if I click the still-open window, like it had already quit, but just forgot to leave my screen until I poked it.
So for the most part, it's just a bunch of issues with applications, selections, and renaming, and that ends up hurting when you're organizing lots of files.
Is this expected from a "top-heavy" computer? Is this an unresolved Leopard problem, or does my computer have the hiccups? I'm hoping it's the latter, cause I'd really like to fix it.

Hi James
It sounds like you might have moved all your applications into the folder that's on your desktop, for one thing. First, close all your open applications (except for Finder). If any of them are still in the trash, get them out, and move them all back to the correct location. While many applications will work fine wherever they are, it's a good idea to keep them in the main Applications folder at the top of the hard drive.
Once the apps are back where they should be (and the desktop folder is empty), trash the desktop folder. Then, open a new Finder window, and click on the Macintosh HD icon in the sidebar. You should see your Applications folder on the right, which you can now pull into the sidebar to create a shortcut.

  • Leopard applications all hang while Time Machine prepares for backup

I'm sure others have posted about this but I can't find a usable solution. I have the most recent version of Leopard, a 1TB external FireWire drive dedicated to Time Machine storage and about 400GB of backups on it. Every day at some point, Time Machine starts a backup, pauses while preparing, and the entire Mac grinds to a halt. New processes won't launch, open applications hang, Finder becomes unresponsive, menus and dock freeze in whatever position they were in at the point of launch, and I can't cancel the backup process.
The only solution is to turn off the backup drive while its running and wait for the Mac to wake up again (which it does in under a minute). I have no virus protection running. I have erased the drive and started fresh at least once to no avail.
Since I am effectively breaking a live connection every time I turn the drive off without unmounting it first (an obvious no-no), the data has great potential to be getting more and more screwed up. What can I do?

  • Inserting/removing headphone jack causes Application and/or Finder to crash

Whenever (and every time) I insert or remove any headphones from the headphone jack in my PowerBook, the current Application and sometimes the Finder immediately crashes. I'm not sure if this started after either the 10.4.2 or 10.4.3 updates, but I suspect that the updates are unrelated. Is this something others have experienced? Is it a hardward problem or a sound driver problem? I suspect that I need to send it in for repair -- but wanted to see if this is a know problem. Thanks.

Eric, welcome to the discussions, as you say, (Send it in)
Inserting or removing headphones should not cause these issues, and I haven't seen anything on this, It sounds like an issolated case...Cheers...Don

  • Mac OS X Applications keep hanging

Since I updated my iMac to 10.5.6 I am having constant problems with applications that hang. It happens to all sorts of apps out of iLife, iWork and other non-Apple Applicactions, too. Especially, when trying to attach a file in a particular program (lie e.g. uploading a photo in a safari browser window, attaching a file in Mail or others. But it also happens just like that out of the blue when using the particular app.
Force quit does not help! I need to force quit twice before the hanging app actually closes its WINDOW. The app itself does not close properly and remains visibly open in the dock (white light), but can not be accessed any longer. A forced system restart by pressing the ON/OFF button on the iMac is required every time. That is pretty annoying!
I tried fixing permissions, although I believe it has nothing to do with that. Verified my HD, which appears to be ok.
I also started my Mac in single user mode (cmd/s at startup) and fsck -fy, received the message "FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED", repeated the procedure and received the message "SYSTEM APPEARS TO BE OK".
Can someone help me out withi this? Thank you.

    Hello,
How much available disk space is there?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Not enough disk space can cause apps to crash/freeze.
How long since you've performed any maintenance?
    Mac Maintenance Quick Assist
    Get Onyx for Leopard; http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/onyx.html
"A multifunction utility for Mac OS X (PowerPC and Intel). It allows you to verify the Startup Disk and the structure of its System files, to run misc tasks of system maintenance, to configure the hidden parameters of the Finder, Dock and of some of Apple’s own applications, to delete caches, to remove a certain number of files and folders that may become cumbersome and more."
Check the boot disk for errors:
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Select your disk, and click First Aid.Click Verify Disk.
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear. Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Verify. If DU reports errors, click Repair. When Disk Utility is finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. Click MacintoshHD and click Restart.
Check your hard disk’s S.M.A.R.T. status: Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.Select the disk in the list at the left, and look at the bottom of the window for a field named “S.M.A.R.T. Status.” Make sure you the word: Verified if not, the drive may be failing.

  • AP Server sometimes hang when CPU load 100%

    Hi experts,
Our system has migrated to ECC 6 and sometimes I find it slow when I
start a new transaction code. At that time, there are many work
processes idle but I find CPU load is up to 100%. I use
es/implementation = flat and es/use_mprotect = flase. Does this matter?
What is the root cause becuase I find just 4-5 background jobs running
will cause servers CPU load up to 100%. I use Dell PowerEdge 1955 with
2 dual cores CPU, 2.0GHz. I total have 9 AP Servers

That's not very unusual for background jobs.  We have daily extracts here that write out GBs of data, each of my jobs take 100% of a CPU core as well.  The way we get around it is to split the jobs up into different SAP application servers.
When the job is running, look into the process and see what it's doing.  It should just be sitting there with the CPU usage count going up.  This means that it's in a loop on a probably large internal table somewhere.  You can try doing a SE30 trace on it, see which loop it is.
Additionally, it would also be wise to see if you can divide the data the job is processing into smaller pieces and run them sequentially.
Lastly, if all things above check out fine and you have no room for improvement, maybe it's time for a hardware purchase ..

  • TV screen sometimes hangs while using apple tv

When I project the computer screen on the TV screen using the apple tv, the picture is not moving smoothly and sometimes hangs the TV screen.

Does it just look darker all the time or does the brightness change over time?
If it just looks darker, check Settings>Video and if set to RGB Low try RGB High or YCrCb.
I was watching a digital copy of final Harry Potter last night that came bundled with the Blu Ray - could not believe how dark the film was - I used to routinely use RGB Low on AppleTV1, and such settings options have only just appeared on AppleTV2.  I could see hardly any shadow detail on RGB Low, much improved on RGB High.

  • Sometimes cannot find wireless networks??

i've looked around on a couple messege boards, but they didn't seem to be exactly the same problem i was having.
essentially, after waking up from sleep or hibernate, i sometimes cannot find wireless networks.  the wireless switch will be on, Fn + F5 says my wireless is on, yet nothing can be found.  strangely, when i try to turn off wireless, whether it's through Fn +F5, or the hardware switch, the light below the monitor remains ON.  basically, i can't even turn it off.  when i do click the button to try and turn off wireless, it gives me the busy cursor and eventually the whole menu disappears.
the way to fix this is by restarting.
just today, however, i suffered this same problem, even though i wasn't coming back from sleep or hibernate - it just lost connection randomly and then couldn't find any networks.  attempts to turn off wireless failed.
is there a solution?  is this actually the same problem that was remedied by changing a power setting?
    thanks in advance.

Yeah I'm having this problem too, with my antique T41 running XP. It used to be rock solid it seemed to change when I installed XP SP3.
I have tried reinstalling the Intel drivers but that hasn't helped. It seems when it restarts after hibernate (and occasionally at other times, as with the previous poster) it somehow doesn't lock on to the signal or it gets confused in the protocol or something. It doesn't always happen though - about one in three.  Rebooting cures it...until the next time....
any assistance / ideas most welcome, thanks.
PS I'm using Windows Zero Configuration not Access Connections. That was a change some years ago that made it work better so I'm inclined to stick with that unless someone can tell me why not....

    Hi All,
We have a CAD server installed on ICM PG box.
Two agent location namely X and Y
    Datacenter resided in location X
Users in location X were not facing any issue
Users from location Y facing diificulties and they were using CAD ver 7.5.1.
Randomly for all the users in location Y were reporting CAD application gets Hanged immediately when the agent answer the call.
Location Y is connected via WAN.
Both the location we are using same CAD version, but still issue persist in location Y.
Kindly let me know how to address this issue
If this was a BUG why it was not impacting other location

    Hi,
I found the problem in CAD Troubleshooting guide.
Problem: Agents can’t log into Agent Desktop.
Solution: During Unified ICM installation, an “Agent Login Required for Client Events” check box is displayed. By default this check box is unchecked. It must remain unchecked for agents to be able to log in. If the check box was checked during Unified ICM installation, you must reinstall Unified ICM and make sure the check box remains unchecked.
I reinstalled CTI Server without that checkbox and now the agent is able to login.
    Thanks all for your help.

  • I have lost my iphone 5 and after sometime I find it in my office but some one has lock it by Icoloud plz help me how to recover my phone

    Dear Friends
I have lost my iphone 5 in my office  and after sometime I find it in my office in my back drawer but some one has lock it by ICloud plz help me how to recover my phone U have all details of my phone.

The only way to locate/disable/erase any lost/stolen iPhone/iPod Touch is through Find My Phone or a similar app. However, this requires that Find My Phone be setup/activated, on your phone, before it was lost/stolen. You would then login at iCloud.com & try to locate it. This requires the phone be turned on & have an Internet connection. There is no other way to locate a lost/stolen iPhone. Apple can't/won't help you, nor will your carrier. Report the loss to the Police, your carrier & Insurance company. Change all of your passwords, especially your Apple ID/iCloud password NOW!
If your carrier offers Blacklisting & they Blacklist the phone, it will be unusable as a phone.
If locked with a passcode, and running iOS 7.0, then phone cannot be re-activated or the passcode removed without knowing your Apple iD/Password. It will be nothing but a useless paperweight.
If not running iOS 7.0, the phone can be forced into recovery mode & restored.

  • Adobe application manager not finding updates on PSE11

There should be a camera raw 7.4 update available, but it is not being found and I am not sure what other updates are not being found.
In addition I did a manual download of Adobe Patch Installer and when it was launched got the following message in the UPDATES pop up:
         > Error loading Updater workflow
I suspect this may be the root cause of the application manager not finding updates.
Any suggestions on how to get this Updater workflow to load?

FYI - I did an un-install and re-install of PSE11 and it looks like that has worked as the system is now recognizing available updates :-)
